Following Kogalo’s 1-0 win over arch rivals AFC Leopards and League Leaders Ulinzi’s shock 0-1 defeat to Western Stima, only 3 points seperate the league leaders from the runners up.
Still it will be a tall order for Kogalo. Not only do they have to win all 3 remaining games and hope that Ulinzi lose one, but they would have to score 4 more goals than Ulinzi over the last 3 games. The latter is highly unlikely given the recent form that saw them drop points at Karturi sports amongst others.
Still it has been a succesful season for Kogalo both on and off the field. The fans have returned in droves and support is at fever pitch. On the field, Kogalo have given fans the kind of hope that has been absent since 1997.
The fans have acted as the crucial 12th man throughout the season and will be sure to appear in full force during the last 3 games.
7 fans died and several others were injured when a stampede occurred during the match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards played on Saturday at the Nyayo national stadium. The stampede occurred when a section of the fans tried to force their way into the main stand. Matters were made bad due to the torrential downpour that made some fans impatient to get into the sheltered section of the stadium which holds only 3000.
The match itself continued despite a fan jumping into the field in a bid to disrupt the match. Gor Mahia dominated but were stifled by the poor field conditions caused by the rains. A late penalty converted by Collins Okoth after George “Blackberry” Odhiambo gave Gor Mahia the win and 3 points.
We at gormahia.net aka Gor Mahia Online supporters club would like to extend our condolences to the bereaved families.
Gor Mahia’s chances of closing the gap on league leaders Ulinzi took a jolt when they were held to a 0-0 tie away to Karturi sports in Naivasha.
Despite being cheered by a large travelling band of fans who gave them a virtual home ground advantage, Kogalo appeared rusty in a lacklusture firsh half in which both teams created few chances.
The entry of Makori, Kiplagat and Ocholla in the second half enabled Gor Mahia to raise their game. However they could not break the deadlock despite numerous raids at the Karturi goal.
The tie leaves Kogalo in danger of falling 8 points behind Ulinzi should they win in Sunday.
