Jogoo remains one of my greatest heros – I admired him in the 80s more than most of the Europe-based stars. I absolutely agree with his completeness. I was proud to wear his name and number during my playing days as I wanted to emulate him in every way.

I remember his unique dribbling skills, a natural left footer………he even scored goals that would have been world beaters in modern football. His corner kick against malawi , he actually scored from a corner , is a reflection. If it was not for racism in the 80s and 90s , any big club in the world would have poached this guy. This guy was my idol .he could have made Ryan giggs, George best, Christian Ronaldo , ronaldinho and all the dribblers in this world look like amateurs. A real legend, a real gentleman. The football world lost one hell of a talent. It is about time gor mahia fans all over the world should come up with something to honour our legends……spammy onyango was just one of the many.
@Jakoyo & Kosero I have not forgotten that goal the JOGOO KIMAKIA scored against AFC at TOK KOMWANDA . It was clever chip by Abdallah Shebe to Gideon “Aziki” Hamisi who in turn send a wide ball to Sammy Jogoo on the right wing “Russian side”.
Jogoo dribbling power overwhelmed both Omar bongo,papa arieno and eventually MURILA and to the surprise of everybody he decide to cross the ball in D-AREA but instead he did send a low screamer that ABBAS still describes as the best individual effort goal that no goalkeeper world could stop. By the time ABBAS was diving the had ball had gone in shook the net and sent back to the pitch due the power and force that JOGOO had used.
If BLACBERRY was patient enough and stayed in K’OGALO for one more season I believe he had the ability to reach and surpass JOGOO talent. If we can re-call his individual skill that made him run rings around ULINZI defense and ultimate turning their goalkeeper Ochieng on the wrong side before shaking the net. Those were JOGOO’S in born skills.
With Sammy Onyango in the team,Gor was always a joy to watch.Alongside other great players,that 87 crack squad was way ahead of other teams.
Back to the present,i want us to tread carefully because the hard work begins now.Let us not fool ourselves that we have won the league just yet.Lets give the boys all the support they need…and some incentives and leave the technical bench to prepare the boys..if it all goes well,on 10th november,it will be us lifting that trophy.God bless the team!!!

Yes I remember that goal he scored against Malawi when his banana ball went directly into the net from a corner kick. I think he had dne a similar thing in a league match a few years earlier.

No ! check that again. best of my knowledge: from kisumu show ground heading town centre via kakamega road then at road/railway flyover just near migosi junction lost control of car plunged down mpaka kwa railway line – at night ? Confirm !
Memories are made of these.. I am reading this and really depicting what happened at Tok Komwanda.. I remember watching the match on Hitachi TV somewhere in Bondo. One of the guys kicked my back as if we were in the field. I never complained. RIP Jogoo…

At one time Allan Thigo was sacked as Gor Mahia coach and replaced by David Otti. For a while Gor continued to fumble even with the introduction of Sammy Onyango Jogoo. Thigo who then was in the cold made a comment to a Daily Nation sports reporter that Gor should take advantage of Jogoo’s banana kicks and deploy him as the corner specialist. David Otti listened and implemented this immediately with devastating effects. Even Mahmoud Abbas could not stop Jogoo’s corner kicks.
I remember watching a match between Efusi and Kisumu Hot Stars at the Kisumu Municipal stadium. From my ‘vantage’ position behind the Efusi goal, Hot Stars fans (and of course K’Ogalo’s) fans could taunt Mahmoud Abbas by shouting “Abbas, Sammy Onyango anakuja!”

Many a times Peter Dawo scored via a header, Sammy Onyango was amongst the corner taker if not Abbas ‘Zamalek’ Magongo. Free kick specialist along side Nyangi Odembo. I remember touching them when they visited homa bay to play against BONDE koniare & homa bay boys (jo seco.) during the annual december visits.
My generations knows little about this Gor Mahia football great. From what i am reading from your comments, the late Sammy and fondly refered by his peers simply as Jogoo, he has made a name for himself and the club. Muroro Pacho would have gone further to tell how many goals he have in his name.
Just like all other Kenyan clubs, Gor Mahia has no proper records for posterity. Football legends like the late Jogoo can best be immortalized in a club museum. A club that does not honour it’s hereos is not worth the name. It is a shame for our club just to sit and watch our football greats to languish in poverty and thereafter die in disgrace.
Today, even when we think we have forward thinking officials at the helm, nothing tangible is still forthcoming on this front. A case in point is that of AWILO. Soon after he was retired at K’Ogalo the most honorable thing the officials could have done is to organize a testimonial match. The proceeds from the match will go along way to help the player financially.
We are only building castles in the air if we continue to write the history of these great players in golden letters and do nothing to put back their broken pieces. I can bet slot of them have goneback to the bottle and hard drugs. Who will take the initiative?
These are beautiful memories and I think the direction the league is taking it’s just a matter of time and we are having many ‘Jogoos’ of the present times.

Loh what can i comment surely? i knew Sammy Onyango during his days. With him Gor was save.In 1987 when gor was playing El Mereik of Sudan in a return match CAF Winnera Cup in Kisumu he gave out a thunderous strike that Mereik keeper had to go down horizontaly just to block it from going in for a goal.He used to provide Peter Dawo with crosses that Dawo never missed to score.It’s unfortunate that Sammy is notyet born.

I watched Onyango Jogoo train in South B where they lived at the MEDICAL apartments.His dad was the biggest GOR MAHIA SUPPORT and his MUM(PAMELA) was well known in South B with her Trade Mark Roster Cigarettes and AKAI RADIO on her ears; when Onyango Jogoo was playing.
Some of his Siblings including Otiesh still live in SOUTH B.WHAT A LEGEND!
AND by the way he was a good dancer of LINGALA TOO!

he used to take me to go watch matches with him….grew up not as one of his daughters but he raised us tough we played soccer….i remember ws even better than my lil bro…ma siz had problems learning how to sit “like a gal” hehehe…. to me he ws the best father il ever had…..so kind generous and protective of us….we lived a nomal life till his departure….although he is gone, his memory still lives with us forevevr…..

As one fan commented, Kenyan football is ruined by administration. To me what Nyamwea did with Harambee Stars trip to Cape Verde, he should be attending roll call at kamiti maximum prison.

We cannot loose such talents without watching them in Europe… The kind of players we are watching from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Algeria, Morroco, Cameroun etc could not match our players in all department and Gor Mahia proved it from 1976 up to 1987. Not mentioning other clubs as well.
First disappointment is National team management, followed by football club management. It is a pity. Above all most football players leave very poor life compared to their opponents in west africa, reason being football leaders being sycophant of gate collection.
The Government should stand tall and deal with such incidences even if Fifa shall land on our Government so long as it remains a lesson to the rest of the coming up leaders.

Loh what can i comment surely? i knew Sammy Onyango during his days. With him Gor was save.In 1987 when gor was playing El Mereik of Sudan in a return match CAF Winnera Cup in Kisumu he gave out a thunderous strike that Mereik keeper had to go down horizontaly just to block it from going in for a goal.He used to provide Peter Dawo with crosses that Dawo never missed to score.It’s unfortunate that Sammy is notyet born.

I watched Onyango Jogoo train in South B where they lived at the MEDICAL apartments.His dad was the biggest GOR MAHIA SUPPORT and his MUM(PAMELA) was well known in South B with her Trade Mark Roster Cigarettes and AKAI RADIO on her ears; when Onyango Jogoo was playing.
Some of his Siblings including Otiesh still live in SOUTH B.WHAT A LEGEND!

he used to take me to go watch matches with him….grew up not as one of his daughters but he raised us tough we played soccer….i remember ws even better than my lil bro…ma siz had problems learning how to sit “like a gal” hehehe…. to me he ws the best father il ever had…..so kind generous and protective of us….we lived a nomal life till his departure….although he is gone, his memory still lives with us forevevr…..

As one fan commented, Kenyan football is ruined by administration. To me what Nyamwea did with Harambee Stars trip to Cape Verde, he should be attending roll call at kamiti maximum prison.
Those who shall vote in Nyamwea should be cursed…
We cannot loose such talents without watching them in Europe… The kind of players we are watching from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Algeria, Morroco, Cameroun etc could not match our players in all department and Gor Mahia proved it from 1976 up to 1987. Not mentioning other clubs as well.
First disappointment is National team management, followed by football club management. It is a pity. Above all most football players leave very poor life compared to their opponents in west africa, reason being football leaders being sycophant of gate collection.
The Government should stand tall and deal with such incidences even if Fifa shall land on our Government so long as it remains a lesson to the rest of the coming up leaders.
