All in all, a good week for Gor Mahia
This week was a much needed relief for Gor Mahia football club which had suffered through bad publicity caused by fans violence, the TV ban, a lousy jersey sponsorship deal and a string of inadequate results.
The week started on a sound note when Supersport recognized the good work being done by Gor Mahia fans and officials and decided to rescind the ban on the club. There would thus be an opportunity for Gor Mahia players to showcase their talents on television not just in Kenya but all over the continent.
Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans played their part by cooperating in a peace initiative and tree planting effort to commemorate the fans who passed away in the equivalent encounter last season. There was even a friendly match pitting AFC fans against their Gor Mahia counterparts. The good publicity and goodwill generated by these actions was priceless.
In fact during and after the match, Gor Mahia fans had no problem sitting together during the match and otherwise joining up in drinking joints after the match. For someone like yours truly who started to attend matches in the 1980s and was used to bitter enmity between the two sets of fans, the sight of GM and AFC fans engaging each other in friendly banter is incredible. But it is this kind of fan friendly atmosphere that will draw neutrals to the stadium.
GM and AFC fans had no trouble sitting together
Security at the match was was top notch. There were no incidences of muggings as has been common at some matches. Ticketing was well organized and most tickets were sold several days before the match.
Finally on game day, Gor Mahia set a new record by collecting close to 5.6 million Ksh. Attendance was incredible. The fan base has grown at an incredible rate and at this rate, Gor Mahia will soon outgrow the Nyayo stadium talk less of the City stadium which is already proving inadequate. In fact if fans continue their peaceful ways, continue their outreach to new fans and continue to socialize online and in real life, Gor Mahia will soon be filling Kasarani.
There are no numbers available on how large the TV audience was, but this was probably the most watched event of the week in Kenya. For once the derby now dubbed “El Classico” is beginning to capture the imgaination of the Kenyan public like it did in the 1980s when everywhere from Machakos to Nyahururu and Malindi, Kenyans everywhere would clutch their radios closely to hear the match announced on radio by legends like Mambo Mbotela, Juma Njuguna, Ismail Mohammed and Ali Salim Manga, then eagerly watch the highlights on the Voice of Kenya’s 7pm news transmission.
Then Gor Mahia capped off the week with a historic win that catapulted them back into contention for the league title. Something they haven’t won since 1995. The El Classico derby catapulted local football back to relevance.

any future sponsorship should included development component in it to cover for running cost of the club house,

Am always humbled by the positive comments you post on this blog. Let us remember that individuals come and go but institutions remain forever. Gor Mahia FC since it was established 43yrs ago in 1968 continued to register unprecendented growth in fan base and revenue.
If the recent figures (5.9m) declared by the officials is anything to go by, the things are looking up for the club. i hear you guys talk of successsful clubs in Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana and South Africa. But what are they getting it right that we are getting wrong? I have even seen you making suggestions on how best to improve our club.
Allow me to enumerate afew as you suggested

I beg to differ. The single most challenge in kenya football and Gor Mahia FC is corruption.
Let us hold our officials accountable as fans. We must also borrow the best football clubs from within and without our borders.
I therefore submit to you that the much talked about secretariat is long overdue. I understand the club is carrying out activities at chairman Rachier’s office. This is very shameful. i cannot authoritatively confirm this is the case. Go
Let us fight corruption at all cost. The rest will come..

@pareyio i totally agree with you and my take has always been, lets have a secretariat period! Rachier has done wonders and as you are all aware he is gunning for the top office football administrator of the country but what will have left behind is the question. Please i pray that we urgently put a lean structure in place as fast as possible and Mr Rachier should spear head this coz we are not sure of the future. Gor if we are not careful might attract corrupt leaders coz people can see there is easy money. This country is heading towards integrity, accountability and transparency why should we be left behind. If we do it right just as Mr Rachier has put it in his campaigns then there is no limit to what God can bless us with. Lets build the structures please please please i beg.
Papamiky and the rest I do hear and feel u but as many including me have said b4 let’s use our numeric advantage to the full advantage- say 5,000 members giving 500 or some memberships (unless the car is a personal gift to Zico by the 200 fans which i have nothing against) to which you can subscribe by Mpesa by paying shs.50 let’s call it Gor Mahia Mpesa branch- such members should have some rights. HOWEVER b4 all this is done the issue of transparency and accountability must be addressed e.g why are we not using our bus-Thika game raised almost 1m, AFC 5.59 that’s a cool 6.6m, there’s the sponsorship and other home games. From previous posts I think only abt 450,000 debt remained to clear the bus. Surely this issue of the bus is becoming an embarrassment. What abt the attendance discrepancy, HAVE the fines been settled coz the “12th man has paid for the damages he was falsely accused of causing”.Then the officials must address the issue of our away games revenue. Can u imagine how much K’galo fans will raise for AFC when the return leg is played at the much bigger Kasarani stadium. Yes we will skin them 4-0 that time but they will be laughing all the way to the bank.

And last but not least, please convert Gor Mahia into a company so as to have much more transparency, for fans to buy shares for development and also to avoid wrangles like those of AFC Leopards. pliz pliz pliz management think about these issues
