Bandari beat Gor Mahia in Super Cup

Gor Mahia went down 1-0 in the 2016 DSTV Super cup match played at Mbaraki sports club. Gor Mahia asserted themselves well in the first half but were left to fight an uphill battle when Harun Shakava was sent off for an unsportsmanlike tackle on Dan Sserunkuma.

If there is one man Gor Mahia will blame for their unsuccessful attempt to bag their third DSTV Super Cup on the trot, then it has to be Bandari skipper-Wilson Oburu.

The experienced shot stopper saved Bandari blushes in a game of two halves that saw Gor Mahia squander a cache of chances in the first half before Anthony Kimani delivered the punishment that a wasteful Gor Mahia deserved in the 68th minute with a memorable strike.

Enock Agwanda was the first to call Oburu into action as early as the 4th minute capitalizing on a Felly Mulumba error to fire a tame shot towards goal but Oburu was at hand to smoother it with Jacob Keli lurking.

Keli though he had given the Green Army the moment they craved for in the stands five minutes later but his goal was disallowed after Raymond Onyango adjudged him to be offside.

An inch perfect ball over the top form George Blackberry Odhiambo found Agwanda on the right and the youngster beat Mulumba for pace sending in a searching cross that Oburu parried as far as Walusimbi on the edge of the 6 yard box.

With Keli being played onside by Mohammed Shariff, the Kenyan international contrived to  side-foot Walusimbi’s feeble shot into the net. Indeed a contentious decision from Onyango!

The Oburu show was interrupted briefly at the quarter hour mark when Agwanda’s show-boating cost Gor Mahia yet another glorious opportunity to take the lead. Isolated upfront the burly forward took his time to juggle the ball at the edge of the box allowing Mulumba to recover and make a timely intervention.

Bandari—uncharacteristically slow off the blocks at home—made their status as hosts felt soon afterwards with Musa Mudde and Anthony Kimani dictating play with neat passing triangles at the centre of the park.

Gor Mahia looked content to sit back and soak in the pressure but still looked dangerous on the break. It was this tactic that bore the best chance of the half when Collins Okoth found himself on the right end of a great passing manouever only to be denied by the lively Oburu.

Agwanda feinted past Mulumba on the right to deliver a deep cross that Keli headed into Okoth’s path. Under pressure from Shariff Okoth did well to shoot into the bottom left corner but his effort was palmed out to safety by Kagere.

Oburu was not done yet. Another finger tip save saw him keep out Shakava’s header from the resultant corner kick before it landed on the top right corner.

For all their positives, Gor Mahia suffered a major setback just before the breather when Shakava was sent off.

In a completely innocuous situation, Shakava high booted Sserunkuma shortly after Karim Nizigiyimana and the diminutive Ugandan were involved in a moment of retaliation.

It was a bad day in office for the former Gor Mahia man who was struggling to make a telling contribution to the game. Handing his side the numerical advantage turned out to be his last meaningful moment on the pitch as he was replaced by Meshack karani at the hour mark.

With an extra man it was just a matter of when the Dockers would score and the breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion. Anthony Kimani connected Karani’s delivery from a corner with an angled header that bounced off George Odhiambo’s core into his path.

Presented with a second chance, the creative midfielder showed composure and class to beat Boniface Oluoch with a looping ball that bounced off the inside of the right bar into the net.

The rest of the game in brief: Nuttall introduced Eric Ouma and Ronald Omino for Keli and Agwanda but the Coastal outfit held on comfortably to their slim lead.

The result means Bandari have clinched their maiden DSTV Super Cup in the process ending Gor Mahia’s dominance in the competition that had seen them emerge champions twice in a row- in 2013 and 2015.

From what I saw both Nzigymana and Siboumane still not match-fit. But from what I saw from Bandari who are one of the favourites then Gor will still take the league. Luke Ochieng fitted very well in the team and BB was very good on the day

Loosing doesnt feel right but I think this lose is good for us. it informs the coach on where to mk ammends plus winning continuosly could easily attract complacency. GAME ON. LONG LIVE GOR MAHIA! ALWAYS

Sport pesa had their betting odds such that for every 1000 bob you bet you stand together get upto 6000 bob should kogallo win. Well well lost and we know who has made the most money sport pesa.

We are learning how too loose after going a full year without a loss but in the process sport pesa is making millions

    • My assessment of the match is that we still have a strong team, even though Gor Mahia lost. Even after going one man down, they still threatened Bandari. As far as the local league is concerned, I think Kogalo are still favourites. I however see a tougher league than last season

    • Jathur, do you really think that teams and many fans beleive that Gor has been winning the league without help? No!…but they move on. Like true sports men, Gor should have accepted the medals just like the other teams do when they feel that Gor is getting outside help

I agree with Ingo bana. Players should display sportsmanship ata kama wameshindwa na ref. Plus they did not deserve to win. Neither side played well.

  • Jacob Keli scored a genuine goal and he was ruled offside. We accepted and continued to play. As for Ingo, I have this to say: “Gor Mahia will still win the League” you can take that to the bank. Efusi is an embarrassment of a team. They cannot even agree on who to run the affairs of the old cat. How pathetic.

  • Gor actually played well b4 the red card. My complaint is that they all looked unfit to me including Bandari who i thot shud have mastered the coast wether. Gor game was technically superior to Bandari, they opened the Bandari defence in several ocassions. After the red card Gor game obviously changed. Yes they deserved the red card. What ssrremkuma did to them is exactly what they shud expect from the francophone countries especially the Arab countries. Sserenkuma who is more widely travelled obviously took advantage of this. I do not like it but its something that even that Chelsea guy is known for.
It’s to early for me to critisize but so far so gud. At least i so another approach rather than what was commonly used.

  • “…efforts palmed out of safety by Kagere”-Admin you miss Kagere;I do too.Bad decision for continuity to loose all our strikers at the front.Agwanda virtually ineffective;that’s why he was to be sold as the coach suggested. I see big problem in Champions league but local;Tuyisenge+Keli partnership maybe will help

Kudos to bandari for the floppy win. I support the players for not taking runners up medal. We scored clear goal but lines man disallowed. Again the corner was wrongly called leading to floppy kimani goal. Am happy even last year bandari beat as by 2-0 in preseason but that was a plus and blessing to us.

A very good display in the first half. We will win the league that is definite once we are full house and fit. Nuttal game plan was simply disorganized by Shakava’ s red card.

The contest between Rachier and Nuttal is now water under the bridge after the booing and heckling that Rachier received . That was enough statement to make him understand that he goofed and k’Ogalo is bigger than his personal egocentric attitude. I now urge Gor MAhia fraternity (EC, fans, TB , players and sponsors) to forge ahead as a unit a forget the recent fiasco. With Aucho, Ja-Usenge, Wafula and the likes of kina Abondo and kahata clicking am sure we will perform well and beyond the doubting thomases.

GDC-GOR DISPLINARY COMMITTE has sent a very strong message to the bloated EC which abdicated its role of creating a conducive atmosphere for players/TB before a cup final, in light of this the result is acceptable. GDC aka KDF aka Green Army will always remain vigilant and counter excesses/madness of the EC.Can’t wait to see the combination of a Aucho & Kahata midfield. Ingo the 2015 KPL champs did not boycott the runners up award rather the organizers presented the cup to bandari first hence our heros thought that was the only presentation being done as fans had already started mingling with the players. #REDUCESIZEOFEC

From this game we learnt that Gor Mahia will still be a strong title challenger. I know predictions can discredit an expert but Bandari FC is a top 5 candidate yet they still accorded too much respect. I also have to laud Anthony Kimani and Obungu for standing out in the game and watch out for Dan Sserunkuma.

I think whoever is supporting the boycott of the medals ceremony does not care for Gor. We have to observe all rules of the game at sll time especially now that we have a sponsor who slso doesn’t want their name dragged in non-sporting behaviour

kagere and olunga were class last season and its going to be difficult to replace them .my only hope is Jacques tuyisenge is going to deliver coz I dnt trust keli agwanda partnership. yesterday we missed KHALID AUCHO.bandari were solid too plus it wasn’t going to easy after shakava red card ,the weather .
Eric ouma looks a good player, pace, can dribble ,quick left foot.personally I dnt no wea Luke Ochieng is going to fit in .
with no kagere n olunga I think kahata should play behind tuyisenge and in front of AUCHO & Okoth with blackberry/wafula/walisimbi on the flanks .
    goooor gooooooor mahia

Not picking the medals is not very good behavior from us. We need to be role models for the other teams

Overall Captain Jagoal says the organizers, contrary to the norm, did things in reverse, presenting the winners with their medals first and hence bandari fans had already invaded the pitch seeking autographs from the true kings of East African Soccer thus making it impossible to give GM players their medals. It’s organizers who goofed!

  • Karim fighting Gattusa at Msa airport was a disgrace to the club. The clubs name is tarnished globally by such stupid behavior. I would to see what action management take to make players realize their role in the society
