Gor Mahia was held to a goal-less draw by a resilient Sofapaka in a Kenyan Premier League match played on Sunday 19 April at the Nairobi City Stadium.

Gor was the stronger side from the start getting  two quick chances early in the match but Michael Olunga failed to  capitalize on the opportunities; his shot on the 2nd minute hit the cross bar and on the fifth minute  his low drive was easily saved by Sofapaka goalkeeper David Okelo, on the other end  Kevin Omondi and Enock Agwanda had two half chances but they shot wide off target.

Bad challenges

The  first half was marred by clumsy challenges  which saw three Batoto Ba Mungu players;  Willis Ouma, Kevin Omondi and Maurice Odipo getting booked while Gor had  Karim Nizigiyimana and Khalid Aucho booked  for bad tackles as well.

There were no goals in the first half as the two sides left for a breather with Gor arguably the better of the two sides.

Sofapaka subs

Sofapaka made early changes  in the second half; Kevin Omondi was hauled off for Eli Asieche while the visibly ineffective Erastus Mwaniki was replaced by  Danson Kago as Timbe looked to inject more fire power into his side.

Michael Olunga missed a glorious chance to give Gor the lead on the 61st minute failing to tap in Meddie Kagere’s inviting pass from the right with the ball rolling out for a goal kick.

Game halted

The match was halted for some minutes  with a quarter an hour to go after  Fiston Abdoul Razak was hit by an object from the crowd which was not pleased by the referee’s decision to book Dikir Glay in an scuffle with Fiston in which the  Liberian appeared to have been fouled by the Burundian only for referee Raphael Nduati to book both players.

Play resumed  afterwards and Michael Olunga had a great chance to give the champions the lead but he shot directly at David Okello who easily saved to help his side pick a point in the match.

Starting XI :23. Bonface Oluoch. 5. Musa Mohamed. 14. Karim Nizigiyimana. 3. Abouba Sibomana.  29. Innocent Wafula. (89’ Timothy Otieno)  30. Ali Abondo.  26. Dirkir Glay. 22. Meddie Kagere. 6. Collins Okoth. 19. Michael Olunga. 10. Khalid Aucho.

Unused subs: 1. Jerim Onyango.  7. Ronald Otieno. 18. Harun Shakava. 25. George Odhiambo.  17. Eric Ochieng. 20. Ernest Wendo.

unfortunately we couldn’t win today’s match despite our dominance and chances. that happens in football matches the world over.
What irked me most is that the goons making us not get sponsors are back. Why throw missiles into the pitch where you can even injure your own players. one even told me that just like last year we are able to support the team yet this is one person who might have forced their way into the stadium.
Very unfortunate. we really need fan education

  • Good display, entertaining stuff, though frustrating that we couldn’t finish off some glorious moves e.g Olunga’s sweet control only 2 be denied by the keeper/Lunda Magere’s header off Olunga’s assist. What about Glay’s/Boni’s authoritative displays in just to mention a few.
Sponsor ni mimi na wewe, behaviour of fans is not the key factor but rather the cost
Referee should stop stupid decisions that action by fans probably was the reason the ref. got scared of awarding Spaka a late penalty.

    • This was probably one among the most entertaining matches by Gor this season.I dont know whether to blame luck or skill for the undeserving draw. The team played with motivation from the first to the last whistle dominating posetions almost the entire match. My observation however is that Innocent Wafula has very good speed but lacks the skill comparable to Walusimbis’s.

Eti we don’t have strikers yet we average 3 goals a game. @Ombeng, have you been following Gor games of late? The fact that we didn’t score doesn’t mean our striking is blunt. Footy is like that

@Ombeng, you do not know what you are saying ati we do not have strikers. Shame on you. May be your name portrays a lot about your posting. We have Meddie and Olunga as key strikers and supplemented by Abondo, Wafula, Aucho, Ronald as midfielders/wingers. We also have Blackberry and Timothy.

What is really wrong with fans like Ombeng Ombeng yawa.

@ODUOR, if the sponsor is me and you and yet all we do as a club fans is talk about the SACCO, Membership drive, Pay Bill, motivation kitty yet the players and TB need their pay now and not in future.

To me all these should actually supplement what a sponsor would give us. To make it worse a quarter f our fans don’t believe in paying to watch matches, even our own home games.

The few committed fans can be discouraged by such acts.

    • @ D.O mimi niko tayari with at least 500bob monthly towards a Sacco but its not my responsibility to launch it.

What is Rachier doing with those Sacco documents?

Also where did the missiles aimed at the players come from? I saw mostly plastic water bottles. Simple frisking at the gates would solve this problem.
Next why didn’t players run to the centre of the field so as to be out of reach of the missiles. Instead they became sitting ducks with KPL head of security not helping much.
If people don’t pay how do they get in? Managing youths ni mambo ya ofis!
This things are not rocket science but just negligence.

      • The missile came from the Sofapaka bench it was a tactic to cause confusion hence abandonement remember last year Abdoul was the same cause of the abandoned match in Machakos and he wanted the same to happen so he can rip on boardroom decision. KPL should ban him for the bad behaviour exhibited yesterday and in the previous matches

we missed a host of chances…but thats how it goes in football.
we just need to be more clinical in front of goal and we will blow teams away!
meddie, olunga and abondo can form one of the deadliest strike force ever seen in recent times…give them more time!!

Dan original and Jamigori, please be informed that am entitled to my opinion based on what i saw.I am more Gor than you.
Abondo is not a striker for heavens sake, our number 9 is Olunga.Of all the goals that we have scored this season, how many have come from Strikers? We need to have the strikers scoring, yesterdays match would have been won had the strikers been more clinical and sharp.
Be objective on your criticism, dont just ejaculate words anyhowly.

@Ombeng the strikers do not necessarily have to score always but they can create opportunities for even defenders to score. Ivanovic and Terry have been scoring and so is Lampard and those were not strikers. If you actually saw how many ‘assists’ Olunga made to his fellow strikers you would not be talking like that. Unless it’s the bitterness that we didn’t win that is clouding your reasoning then I can understand

Great game but for the disappointing draw!

Some heart breaking close misses by our boys!

In triumph and glory, in defeat and agony, K’OGALO FOR EVER !!

  • How can somebody be more Gor than the other. For heavens sake, its a draw not a loss. A striker must either score, create chances or act as a decoy n in desperate situations defend. R u aware that France reached the semis in ’98 courtesy of defenders n at one time upto 2006 the top scorer for spain was Fernando Hierro ( a full back). If u r more Gor than someone then give players words of encouragement n not rude put me downs. We are still unbeaten despite our serious financial difficulties. Thanks to God.

Was alarmed by comments from Ombeng’ Ombeng’ ati “we do not have strikers”. What do we have Mr Ombeng’? Olunga, Kagere….? Such outbursts are indeed unwarranted. Even your opinion need to be tempered in such a way that you do not hurt and demoralize players unnecessarily.

To the rowdy supporters throwing missiles at the slightest provocation, please please stop, you are not more aggrieved than some of us. One day you will bring this team to grief. Only last week SC Villa of Uganda was fine several points for such issues.

Gate people, it is so painful that some of us are paying six hundred to watch these matches ,yet one has to struggle and push with others who want to get in free. And one broker had the audacity to tell us that we should expect to have people gaining entry without paying ” budaa hiyo ni lazima”. What a shame, yet the team needs money to be able to run.

Fake tickets, who knows better? Treasurer? Is it possible that I could have bought a fake ticket, and that my money is “eaten” by rogue agents? Painful, too bad. And they then must have their people at the gates to let such ticket holders in without raising suspicion.

The boys have to get their positioning right. Kagere and olunga as main strikers need to work together and switch position whenever possible, in summary they need to know each other.

I have never understood why a Gor can want to deny Gor the revenue and even thro missile in the pitch. Despite the provocation our maturity is determined by how we react. Unfortunately we still have aged fans who laud and encourage others, especially the younger ones to act in a rowdy way instead of guiding them. I heard one telling Glay to revenge the tackle from the Sofa fan. I you know about soccer then you kw the consequences of reacting to a tackle.

Otherwise our team is still the best and the act that every tem celebrates no losing to us says it all
