Ugandan striker Dan Sserunkuma scored for Gor Mahia before Andrew Tololwa equalised for the brewers with six minutes to full time at Kasarani

Tusker came from a goal down to hold Gor Mahia 1-1 in a top of the bill Kenyan Premier League match at Kasarani on Sunday.

Dan Sserunkuma scored for Gor Mahia in the 59th minute before Andrew Tololwa equalised for the brewers with six minutes to full time.

Tusker kept up the pressure on their opponents in the opening minutes of the game and were duly rewarded with two successive corners one of which was cleared off the Gor Mahia line. It was Ismail Dunga who should have put Tusker ahead but was denied by Jerim Onyango for a fruitless corner in fourth minute.

Gor Mahia got their first chance in the 9th minute. Godfrey Walusimbi picked out Timothy Otieno with a beautiful effort. The young striker left Jockins Atudo stranded but his final shot was ably stopped by Samuel Odhiambo in the Tusker goal for a corner.

The Tusker backline did well to deny Dan Sserunkuma an opportunity to attack them directly but the Ugandan still found space to try and get a goal from the flanks. His sudden burst put Tusker under a lot of pressure. Gor Mahia made first substitution resting an injured Eric Ochieng for Dan Onyango.

Both teams displayed a highly physical game leaving centre referee Sylvester Kirwa with no option but to caution a number of players. First on Kirwa’s book was Tusker defender Lloyd Wahome. Aboud Omar followed next.

On Gor Mahia side, Godfrey Walusimbi, Collins Okoth and David Owino were all booked. Gor Mahia raced ahead in the 59th minute when Dan Sserunkuma scored from the penalty spot.

Jerim Onyango denied Khalid Aucho in 67th minute with a low shot. Then Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi made some super substitutions which worked well to get his side a point.

He rested Robert Omunuk for Clifford Alwanga, pulled out Athman Buki for Andrew Tololwa to remain with a three man backline with no reason to defend. Gor Mahia on the other hand rested goal scorer Dan Sserunkuma for George Odhiambo but it was Tusker’s substitutions which worked.

Tololwa worked well with Anthony Kamau and Clifford Alwanga in a forward line that gave Gor Mahia plenty of trouble. In 84th minute, Kimani found Alwanga, who headed towards goal and was denied by Jerim Onyango but Tololwa scored from the rebound.

Tololwa could have easily made it two at full time but was denied by the wood work with Onyango well beaten.

was a good fight. if tusker still has a date with paka- sofa. our three games in hand can get us to 51 points then we just need two more games and a draw based Jakoyo calculus.

let us join hands and support the team. I saw a crowed today behind the team and at citi- the numbers will definitely intimidate

  • That was not a bad start for Frank Nuttal as a head coach but I hope he will improve on his tacticts for the next matches. I also saw the level of fittnes being up xcept in the dying minutes when Tusker overwhelmed us & ran over us as ordinary team. But what am sure of is that even Tusker will drop points as well as Sofapaka.thank u boys for the point earned.k’ogalo forever.

very physical game, kudos to GM players, atleast one culd see them given back as much physically as they got.Our undoing is lack of enough confidence especially in our midfieders to enable possession even under pressure like our opponents.kudos to the defence & walu is a threat in that position.lastly those involved in signing shuld not be involved come end of the season,we have so many players that have never made an impact.in my opinion as much as tm is gud,he shuldn’t be our 1st choice striker.,

  • What ails our coaches tactical awareness is beyond me. You’re leading 1-0 with 7 minutes remaining in s crucial match and you are bringing on a striker for a striker instead of trying to see off the match by bringing in a defender/defensive midfielder 4 a striker!!! Whn Tusker brought on Alwanga and Tololwa to join Were upfront, Kimanzi was simply going for broke to try and get an equalizer! Frank Nutall should have done the opposite by bringing on defenders to add bodies in the defense. The right sub should hve been Simone Pierre /Charles Bruno for Danny. As Tusker relentlessly attacked us from the right, we should have deployed any of those defenders to easen the pressure on Musa. Gor Mahia would have walked away with 3 precious points if they had paid attention to tactics in the last 7 or so minutes. Where are the Jose Mourinho of the KPL! Its only Arsene Wenger who is known to be averse to spying on the opposition or even watching their videos. All said and done, it was refreshing to see a new system being employed by Kogalo. Walusimbi wide upfront left is going to create many chances for our strikers. Timothy is forever in a hurry, why? I miss Rama every time I see Timothy flufing his lines and making wrong decision. Welbeck has just been sold to Arsenal by man utd because LVG feels he is just too much pace but not enough goals. As a striker, Timothy needs to be scoring. Rama ran to the right channels and created goals or scored goals, how many has his replacement scored? That’s enough for today. May The Almighty God guide Kogalo to title no 14 in the year 2014.

    Well said Le Pastre.

All in all it was refreshing to see the boys not being railroaded without a fight by the beer guys.

    Kogalo for ever!

@le pastare,i beg to differ, the coach had packed the midfield with 3 defensive midfieders and a defender as an offensive midfielder on the left.tactically this was defensive frm the start.the problem with musa’s wing was that onyango who was supposed to support him like walusimbi did with oluoch always drifted inside at the center leaving musa exposed.i guess he is not used to play wide.

The team played well,Timothy will mature up,the day he will score in a big match he will never miss goals again.let coach play for them the missed opportunities because this will make him lean.the fielding was perfect.my humbly request is that Pierre should not be benched.we can have musa in no.2,Pierre in 7 n falls back to support musa.Walusimbi is creative n should remain there.Where is Emuge?

coach the players fitness today was good but there is room for improvement.Gattuso???I hope he was given long contract.he played like ten men.

  • From the onset the defensive nature of Gor Mahia’s set-up is not in doubt! The trouble comes in when the opponent, in a desperate act to salvage even a draw floods bodies upfront by replacing a defender with a striker. This in a nutshell shifts the balance of personnel in their final third. They have more people attacking our defenders. Its sacrilegious to maintain the same shape and hope not to be found out. They had their defense regigged and all pushing up. Kiiza, Osumba, Alwanga, Tololwa and Were all stretching our defense. This is the simple reason why we conceded the late equalizer. Thank you.

Comes down to the tactical approach,i agree with Le Pastre here. You noticed tusker started pressing us the moment Sserunkuma was taken off.Sserunkuma made tusker play 8 men in that 3 players were specifically assigned to him.this gave gor room and space in the mid field and quick counter attacks, which enabled walusimbi go foward.Tusker were tired and were about to loose the game had it not been for Dannys substitution. That is where Loga beats all, with Loga,we would have won that game.

Are we quick to forget the coach is a fitness expert NOT a tactician……I agree with le pasture, that’s why we were asking for LOGA, tactical switch to 5-4-1 could have done it …. but sometimes it is a gamble! You can bring a defender and still concede a late goal , you can still bring a striker and he scores the winning goal.

  • i am content, that what a great game, its us who held tusker not vice versa, the beer guys came with an attitude of killing the game early but were in for a rude shock, all went well except the sserunkumas substitution that gave tusker breathing space. not bad, at the end of the day, advantage still with kogalo. thank you

    Good result.
Its more about denying the opponent possession by keeping possession, that’s the ability this team lacks and in a nutshell I hope Nutall can crack this nut.
I agree with opinion that we should lock our games when leading in the later parts of matches as the same happened when we were leading AFC.
When you allow the opponent to dominate your area you will definitely crack under pressure.

Timothy Otieno is far better than Joseph Wanyonyi, my only concern is where can we purchase for him the intelligence required of a striker? A draw against a purposeful Brewkenge is not a bad result although as Le Pastre says, with better tactics we could have won that match with 7 minutes in the clock.

Our back line did their best and I want to believe that the deliberate “assault” on Erick Ochieng affected our game plan somewhat. Just wondering: suppose Walusimbi was deployed to attacking midfield and then Charles Bruno brought to full back 3? Le Pastre what do you think? Would it improve our attacking strength? Would it also help the midfield to lift off some load from the overworked defense?

I am satisfied with the results. It was a very tough match. Our boys gave as much as they received. The deployment of “Jaja” Walusimbi to play upfield without worrying to cover his back worked very well and will give the remaining teams a nightmare. He was a live wire yesterday. All the best on Wednesday against Ulinzi.

We played very well in the first half but in the second half we dropped and this was when Danny was subbed. As much as we can criticize that sub i have seen coaches all over removing their top players when they have a crucial match ahead and are leading in the game. The onus was on BB to sustain that pressure upfront which he didn’t. I am sure Wiper with his incisive runs would have helped. What happened to Emuge? He would have been brought in as a sub to bolster the defence and Calabar given a free role in fron the back four. Onyango also contributed in exposing Musa in the second half the way Walisimbi covered Oluoch and as such there were no threats on that side. Anyway we must acknowledge that we have a weak bench power unlike the other leading teams. All the same let’s continue giving support to the team just like we did yesterday. As it is the draw was more disavantageous to Tusker than us

some of us have started football mathematics by looking into how the other teams are going to loose points/drop points- however practical that is, our fate is in our own hands. We win we are out of the woods, drraw or loose we are dead
meat. stop praying Tusker or sofamieow, or Chemilil Mururi looses….we have our fate in our hands. Go, go, mighty Kogaloo. We don’t want any supreme court in this.

  • what I can agree with is that removing Danny for BB was ill adviced. Danny is known by all defenders & the mere fact that he is in the field makes defenders avoid moving forward. Or maybe it is a must that BB must play. I can bet that BB cannot get a no. in the big teams in KPL.How can a clever coach remove Ssere for BB. Danny was maked by 3 defenders but BB was not even a threat to wahome & atudo.

Precisely,i dont know why the coach didnt see that,we could have even added another goal had Danny played 90 minutes,Tusker were thirsty for a goal, they all went foward, their keeper was actually operating just outside their 18 yard box.poor tactical decision it was.

ombeng those guys got that chance to attack since ssere was removed, otherwise it was agood game but I can only blame ouna and bobby on his sub these two guys have been here long enough and knows the threat the guy cause to the opponents even if he is down.

GM wins the next two matches and all the noise makers will be silent! Tusker of Sofa will not be anywhere near. By the way, have Tusker and Sofa played each other? Because that will be a clear opportunity to pull above them

as i said above thinking squarely what other teams do is not doing us any good…lets take the bull by the horn and “nyam nyam’ our opponents. That is gonna save us the hustles of heart attack finger crossing. Over to the players.

Sofa also play Ingwe before playing Tusker. It’s gonna be tough for all the three or four top teams.
As we wait for Ulinzi,Chemelil,Bandari, mathare, sofapaka,City Stars, muhoroni and KRA
SOFAPAKA will have Muhoroni, sony, kra, gor, afc and Tusker
TUSKER will play City Stars, mathare, muhoroni, kra, thika AND sofapaka

The truth is that all the three top teams including us with a congested fixture will drop points but we only hope that we drop minimum points as compared with the others. We should also hope that the AFCON fixture in mid October does not affect us as the Cranes contigent will be away in West Africa

Bloggers, we have to stop infighting in the technical bench if we are to win the KPL title. I strongly blame the EC for this mess at this time of the league. Bloated TB members are more the reserve players. We need wisdom to succeed in this matter.

The friction is between Tom Ogweno and Nutall, rest of the technical bench are torn in between,Ouna and Ogweno are on one side,Ogolla and Nutal on the other side.Ouna feels he is more experienced than Bobby as an assistant coach and wants to upsurge Bobby.

I think the like of Frank ouna and Ogweno should not be part of TB because they are coursing unnecessary tension within the team. The EC should crack the whip before something bad(bad result) happe, all the best sirkal.
