Gor Mahia win 2015 DSTV Supercup

Gor Mahia are the 2015 DSTV Super cup champions after beating Sofapaka 2-1.

Kogalo started with Boniface Oluoch in goal in place of the injured captain Jerim Onyango. Making a surprise return was Ugandan defender/midfiielder Geoffrey Walusimbi who had been missing from recent friendlies and was even rumoured to be attending trials overseas.

Returnee Ali Abondo scored the match opener after he was put through by Khalid Aucho. Gor Mahia could have scored more goals in the first half as they created numerous chances. But new signing Mike Olunga in particular was wasteful, spurning chance after chance.

But Olunga was instrumental in the second goal. He was brought down during a marauding run into the box. Ali Abondo scored the resulting penalty to put Gor Mahia up 2-0.

Sofapaka then came back forcefully into the match searching for a goal that would reduce the arrears. The goal came when Innocent Wafula turned the ball into his own net following an attempted clearance.

Coach Frank Nuttall was full of praise for his charges.

“My players did not disappoint today (Wednesday). They played according to instructions and contained Sofapaka, who had resorted to long balls to penetrate our back four. We could have been punished had we insisted on falling to their plans but we maintained our own game and that made the difference.

“As always, the boys were able to raise their game. We performed better than we did in pre-season and showed that the boys are always able to raise their game when it matters most.” he said to goal.com

Ali Abondo was happy with the teams performance.

“This was an important win for us considering that it is the first trophy of the season,” he said to goal

It was a performance that will make Gor Mahia fans happy as they have been pressing the panic buttons after losses to Bandari and Power Dynamos and below par performances against sides like Bidco.

Starting Line-Up

Boniface Oluoch,  Karim Nizigiyimana,  Dirkir Glay, Abouba Sibomana, Geoffrey Walusimbi, Ernest Wendo, Khalid Aucho, Musa Mohammed,  Ali Hassan Abondo Michael Olunga, Ronald Otieno

Kudos to the team, the formation was good only for some players like olunga to compose himself well infront of the goal.Otherwise from our goalkeeper, defenders and midfielders goodwork done. Strikers just sharpen a bit.congratulations .

What I saw was simply fantastic football. It’s a very long time since I last saw Gor play such ‘Brain football’. Gor has won matches but this one was done in a way soccer should be played. I was not even expecting Gor to win this match but not only did they win but they displayed high tech football too. The passing was completely good and the way timing was being done was of high level. Can we maintain this type of soccer? I think Nutall can. I knew this team would gel and boy they have done it well. Everybody played well and I think Olunga has found a team that will take him places. Innocent Wafula too. Ali Abondo for once convinced me that he is good, keep playing like this and your the next guy the Zambians will come for… but I repeat, that the whole team did well. The defence was exceptional, the tackles were very professional without unnecessary fouls. Congrats.

@Caleb, which coach? Meanwhile, let me hear those doubting thomases shouting their voices. I repeat, friendly matches are meant to test formations, systems, fitness levels among other things. Winning them can only be bonuses. It is these kind of matches that matter. Let me now hear those thomases telling us that oooh Olunga did not score, oooh our striking is blunt and so on. Who cares!! If we can win titles with Jerry Onyango becoming top scorer in the whole league, who care!! Pople must learn to be objective when analysing matches. Because GM lost to Dynamos, and Nakumatt drew and Sofapaka beating them does not make GM the worst team on the planet as others want us to believe. Secondly, remember we have just acquired a completely new team unlike our opponents who have kept their players. These individuals have to play together for long so as to gel. Don’t expect too much soon.

That was such an awesome game. The team played with a lot of determination. Despite the own goal Wafula is a pretty good player and boy does he have the guts. Olunga is what we have been missing for he has brought presence upfront. Khalid and Wendo marshalled the midfield well outmuscling our opponents. The wingbacks were just subperb not forgetting the defence led by Dirkir.
I must say what i saw today is like no other Gor in recent past and cant wait for the league to start for sure.

Thank you EC and the Technical bench.

Funny how when we win we are all happy praising the team yet when we lose we even even call the players ‘useless’. The culprits know themselves

Could easily have won the game 5-1 if olunga was clinical.

Kudos to the team but let’s not read much into the game……like I said, we fielded a strong team made up of all the foreigners , a luxury that we shall not have in the CAF champions league.

So the real test is this weekend when our defence, midfield and strike force shall be tested to the fullest.

    Good luck!

The good book says as a man thinketh in his heart so is he.When we are determined to find faults in any human being, you will surely find it.I thank the fans who post encouraging comments and critisize constructively. These kind of posts gives the reader and players who visit this site the basis upon which to raise their game and comments. Some these players are young enough to be our children.I wonder how I can wake up one morning and call my own son “useless” because-in my opinion- having failed in a CAT or a RAT ,as the case maybe,he has actually blown it.We need to remind these lads that nothing is impossible and that we shall always walk with them ,in defeat and victory. Now we are being told we shall have no luxury of fielding the foreigners who were on show yesterday. So what if we don’t. We don’t even have the money to participate in CAF Champions league.Facts are important in any discourse.I beg and indeed implore our good friend jakoyo to give us Facts about ths KCC and Molo milk “still birthed”sponsorships.I am also challenging him to name the senior politician who pulled the rags.Surely, ndugu Jakoyo,Gor imekukosea nini?

Jakoyo is not the real dan of Gor Mahia. This must be Ingwe supporter and impostor who has got no place in Gor Mahia. Always his postings are unpalatable even if the club has done well. These are not posting that does not reflects the aspirations and expectations of a true Gor Mahia fans and supporters in general and this is why this Jakoyo is misleading the real Gor Mahia followers and supporters.

Some of us were called sycophants when we said that team need time to gel. JO K’OGALO WACHU TEK.

Congratulation to the boys and TB for the job well done. Wafula keep it up don’t look down upon your self, those mistakes happens sometimes.

The only thing that got me thinking is only two players from kogalo’s squad of last season made it to the starting line-up and all the back four were foreigners. otherwise it was an excellent performance.

    That’s more like it.
Game time & is show time. Its the time to show what you’ve learn’t i.e to perform and get results.
    Fans keep up the pressure.
In my view the one thing that can derail GMFC this season is “The Wage Bill”.
Good performances like these will bring back the fans.
Let’s opt for Nyayo (due to its ample seating space) and eradicate hooliganism and the crowds will be back.
Again I appeal to the EC let not the wage bill be a distraction, some of us a willing to commit some funds every month towards GMFC so long as its fully and transparently accounted for.
    EC start off the membership/sacco.

@Jakoyo, what do you mean by “real test” this weekend when our defence, midfield and strike force shall be tested to the fullest.

Gor Mahia is a very big team and can adapt to any system of football formation.

@ODUOR12, I do concur with you in eradicating hooliganisms and thuggery, let us move our all home matches to Nyayo due to the spacious sitting space, secure parking and crowd control mechanisms.

On financial stability, the EC should come up with a more transparent manner in reaching out to all fans to contribute on annually or monthly or weekly basis to the club kitty. I am willing to commit between Kshs.3000-6000 every month, which should translate to Kshs.36,000-72,000 per annum.

  • VITORIA CONCORDIA CRESCIT (victory in harmony) so goes the slogan of that team that baba and many of us support. The moment I saw the sizes of the two players that we had fielded to act as the shield to the defence, I knew deep in my heart that sofapaka had no chance in the match. In Earnest Wendo and Aucho, Gor has two very powerful, mobile and intelligent midfielders. Their true worth and quality will influence our play a lot once they are settled. We are going to over-run most of our opponents’ midfield this season. We have improved our quality right from the goalkeeper to the strikers. When you compare like for like, Gor Mahia will be a much more improved and a better side than the last year’s team. Oluoch Bonface adds calmness, stability and almost an (I don’t care attitude/nonchalant ) what you may want to do. Glays qualities are there for everyone to see while the two full-backs are a massive improvement to Kevin Oluoch and Musa Mohammed. This is because they are full- backs by trade- specialists if you may want to call them that. Last year, we were using converted full-backs in Musa and Oluoch. The midfield of Abondo, Aucho, Wendo, Gatusso, Eric, Santos will dominate the KPL and I wont be surprised if the Mifielder of the year if not footballer of the year emerges from this group. We will not miss Kizito as he has adequately been replaced by the towering presence of Aucho and Santos not to Mention the grit of Wendo. If what I saw is a pointer, then Wendo loves to stick it in, he loves to tackle and he is not afraid. In Olunga, the raw materials are already there and Frank Nuttal just needs to give Le Prof. Wenger a call for tips on how to polish the rough diamond that he has. The boy has pace to burn, determination, grit and a height to envy. I saw him force the Sofapaka defenders into making many defensive errors. He just needs to learn how to make the right decisions at the right time and he will be home and dry. It is a welcome relief to see seasoned defenders like Felly Mulumba and Charles Odero shaking in their shoes every time Olunga faced them either individually or collectively. We are looking at a potential KPL top scorer in 2015. The days of our short but mercurial Ugandan striker- Danny being bundled off the ball are well and truly behind us. Exits Danny and enters Olunga. This boy reminds me a lot of the late Steve Odiaga aka Brigadier Odongo. Surely happy times are here with us once gain at Kogalo family. I can’t wait for the first whistle to kick off the new year/season. I can not wait to see Olunga, Omino, Timothy, Blackberry, Kagerre, Wafula and Toufiq tearing defences apart. Welcome season 2015 when we shall duly win our third KPL title on the trot with 4 matches to spare. May God bless Gor Mahia.
