Gor Mahia ensured their winning record against Sofapaka is intact save for the Kenya Power Charity Cup, registering a 2-1 win in a Kenya Premier League (KPL) match played on Saturday 10 May at the City Stadium starting 1500 hours local time.

Patrick Kagogo broke the deadlock in the 27th minute before Daniel Sserunkuma pulled back from the spot in the 38th minute with Rama Salim netting the winning goal in the 73rd minute.

Gor Mahia kept the ball rolling playing offensively right from the word go. In the 9th minute, Eric Ochieng’s corner was headed wide by Rama Salim.

In the 14th minute, Rama Salim utilized Yusuf Juma blunder to race forward but his cross was cut back by Eugine Asike for a fruitless corner before Patrick Kagogo’s was intercepted by David Owino.

Enoch Agwanda opened the referee’s book with a yellow card after fouling Eric Ochieng’ in the 17th minute. The former escaped a second booking after bringing down Godfrey Walusimbi in the 23rd minute.

Dan Sserunkuma then saw his goal called for offside in the 24th minute, the Ugandan international had connected into an empty net from a shot.

Sam Timbe withdrew left back Yusuf Juma for John Njoroge in the 25th minute to perhaps stabilize the position and slow down the rate at which the opponents were attacking from the flank.

Two minutes later, John Baraza found Patrick Kagogo who made no mistake of placing the ball past David Juma in the Gor Mahia goal for the opener.

Gor Mahia corner taken by Eric Ochieng’ in the 32nd minute was cleared by Sofapaka defence, moments later Geoffrey Kizito was too slapped with a yellow card for bringing down Kagogo.

Centre referee Raphael Nduati then controversially awarded the hosts a penalty after Felly Mulumba was judged to have brought down Sserunkuma when he actually went for the ball; the former was yellow carded before the Uganda Cranes forward added his goal tally to six, that happening in the 38th minute.

Antony Ndolo was another Sofapaka player booked this time round fouling Eric Ochieng’ in the 42nd minute. No side find the back of the net with three minutes of added time.

In the second half, Sofapaka started from where they left in the first stanza controlling the game from the middle of the park but Gor Mahia played cautiously to ensure they do not concede the second goal.

Gor had a corner in the 55th minute well dealt with after Israel Emuge fouled David Okello with the latter coming to Sofapaka rescue again in the 61st minute, denying Sserunkuma a brace on a one against one situation.

Timbe made the second substitution in the 63rd minute, pulling out Enoch Agwanda for youngster Ellie Asieche, three minutes later, Timonah Wanyonyi came on for Eric Ochieng’ in what was Gor Mahia’s first change in the tie.

Geoffrey Kizito found Rama Salim upfront but the former Congo United midfielder hacked Mulumba when going for the high ball in the 73rd minute before Walusimbi utilized the melee to cross for Rama who turned home past a helpless David Okello for the second goal.

Mulumba who was on the ground still was stretched off for treatment with George Owino coming on for the captain after four minutes.

Sofapaka could not convert few of their created chances to restore parity allowing Gor Mahia to extend their winning streak against Batoto ba Mungu since 2009 save for the Kenya Power Charity Cup even with four minutes of added time.

  • Congratulations are in order, especially after a hard fought win. And yes I have contributed to the 350100 kitty and will continue to do so. But the big Q is- For how long will this continue? The team must not lose focus of the bigger prize tht awaits them. The EC must now give direction as to where the team is heading from here. Its an indictment on the leadership capabilities of the EC led by AR. They are an embarrassment to the entire country and more so to the Luo nation for leading a storied club like Gor Mahia to a beggar’s Path. Why are we walking around wth a begging bowl to make ends meet!! We have the most expensive, marketable and reputable football brand in this country! Why are we struggling to get sponsors, and did we have plan B and C in case our plan A of getting a sponsor failed!

Kindly pursue the Sacco idea for financial stability.
Let GM members primarily fund the club. I pledge at least kshs.500/month as my shares/contribution.

  • Blame the referee as much as you can but fact remains we have bagged 3 points and that means we are 4 points clear of Chemelil and 8 points clear from Sofapaka (new cry babies in town). We need to thank all for the continued support for the club. The players and the technical bench need to work extra hard in order to maintain the position number 1.

Congrats Boys. Though we were not at our best today that’s what champs are made of. We turn hostile situations into our advantage. For the ’empty heads’ who throw missiles into the field please stop it. The players knew it was too early to lose the game and that’s why they pleaded with the fans to let them go ahead with their business.
To the EC please ensure that there are enough ticket booths especially now that we need every penny. Getting a ticket today was a nightmare just in the past.
    Congrats again to the team

@Dan the boys played very well and the formation of 4-5-2,is really working well,it is only in second half that akumu and ochieng were tired and brought some pressure in our defence. To the afc leopards fans who are calling me always and telling me that we are beggars ,it is not bad to be a beggar but am really sure that if it could be afc in our current situation ,there players could have not been playing know due to lack of money and the fans who cannot contribute anything to the team.otherwise let us continue supporting team through our contribution.

@LOVERS OF GOR MAHIA: WE R NOT BEGGARS, WE R THE SPONSORS OF THE MIGHTY GOR MAHIA OF EAST AFRICA. LET US BE STRONG.MOLA AKONASI KILA WAKATI.GOD BLESS OUR TEAM.

  • This is what I belief 350100 will define the value of Gor. If we contribute 1 million, the sponsors will just come in at that amount.

If we raise 50,000,000 the sponsors will know that without this kind of money, we will not need them.

And further, if we can qualitatively say, 1million people contributed, the ANY sponsor would like to be visible to the 1 million people supporting GOR.

This thing is that serious. In fact I contributed and nudged to contribute further when Rama Scored.

remember 350100. it will define our value

Jack omollo do you mean Gor had an extra player on the field? (4-5-2) equates to 11 infield so I guess it was 3-5-2! Great stuff anyway

  • @Mwakio I hope you got the proceedure & all the account nos. right when sending cash.
Did you get or is there a confirmation message?
Even from the list 5K is one of the higher contributions and it would be sad if the money didn’t reach the players.
The other alternative (if you followed the right steps) is too sad to fathom.
Can EC or treasurer shed some light bet you not!
That’s my problem with these knee jerk solutions we need something more sustainable.
ON THAT NOTE I’LL WAIT 4 THE GM SACCO.

@Mwakio and @Oduor12 the list that is currently online does not show all the contributors but only for a particular period. I had tht issue until i got the whole list and my various contributions were all there.
Let’s continue supporting our team. We can also see what our shemelis despite having a sponsor are going through. That should a lesson to us as Kogalo fans. We will lose some when playing well, win some when down but our resolve to support the boys has to go on.
    Kudos everybody
