Gor Mahia are 2017 Kenya Premier League champions !

Gor Mahia clinched the 2017 Kenya premier league after they beat military side Ulinzi stars 1-0. The goal came via Meddie Kagere in the 14th minute. Gor Mahia have now won the Kenyan top tier league 16 times which is four times more than second placed AFC who have 12 titles and third placed Tusker who have 11 titles.

In a dominant display, Gor Mahia have won the league with five matches to spare while also leading the league in goals scored (47) and goals conceded (18).

Match report from the Standard

Gor Mahia are the new Sportpesa Kenyan Premier League champions.

They achieved the feat for their 16th title victory after they whipped Ulinzi Stars 1-0 at Kericho Green Stadium in a tough encounter on Saturday.

Rwandese international Meddie Kagere scored the lone goal in the 15th minute to lead by the solitary goal at the break.

The victory was warm welcome to the British Coach Dyerr Kerr who succeeded Brazilian Joe Marcelo Ferreira who had served at the club for only 14 months after he took over from Scott Frank Nuttal.

The result left Gor Mahia perched at the top of the log with unassailable 66 points from 30 matches with four matches before they conclude their fixtures.

A jubilated Gor Coach Kerr attributed their victory to high discipline in the team.

“We have achieved all these due to a high sense of discipline among my players and their determination towards the title in every subsequent match,” he told Standard Sports.

The Gor tactician who said he is not only contented with this victory stated that he is now focused on leading the newly crown champions to a continental title next year and emulate their 1987 performance when they became the first club from East and Central Africa to lift the Mandela Cup (formerly Africa Cup Winners Cup).

“With the kind of quality of my players under me, we are now focused to win a continental title next season,” he explained.

Gor are scheduled to feature in the prestigious Africa Champions League next season.

However, despite the victory, he decried the state of the Kericho pitch, which he stated affected their mode of play.

“We would have won the match with a bigger margin had it not been the state of the pitch that was bumpy and affected our format of play,” he said.

The loss left Ulinzi Stars Head Coach Benjamin Nyangweso boys tongue tied after the comeback of defenders Mohammed ‘Rio’ Hassan, Oliver Ruto and Geoffrey Kokoyo and midfielder Boniface Onyango and winger Samuel Onyango who missed their previous matches due in accumulation of yellow cards.

Ingo, we also need Ingwe to be in their rightful place. For exciting Kenyan football, we need a stronger Ingwe next season. Tell Ingwe management to put their house in order

      • Harry, we are working on that. Now, it is extremely important that Ingwe (Mashuja) and Sirkal do well in continetals next year. Judging from History, Harambee stars does well when these two teams do well.

Well said @ingo. Strong mashemeji teams brings out the best in Kenya soccer. At least Sportpesa will have their brand being advertised across the continent. Isn’t that what a sponsor needs?

Congratulations Team. Was Stephen Waruru in the line up?

Before conquering Aftrica, please teach Onduparaka a lesson for me.

  • Hasn’t Ingwe won the league 13 times?
So does this mean that the DsTV Supercup of 2018 will be a Mashemeji Derby?
It will be a nice motivation towards retaining the league since we will open the season by beating Ingwe.

Well done team and TB. We fans are happy and pray the the office rewards you promptly as agreed so that you are well motivated for 2018.Let the team and players now focus on the player awards and of course let concerned panelist not deny Ker coach of year he deserves it more given that he’s lifted the trophy in six months. In 2018, we should also aim for a double (league & shield) in addition to at least CAF group stage. Its been too long since GMFC last achieved these feats.

I hope Kerr will not be denied the Coach of the Year just like he has been denied the CoTM. We don’t want to hear that he joined Gor late or he is a foreigner etc etc.

      • Dan, coach of the year should be given to a coach who has transformed a team to achieve major strides ( not necessarily win the league). With Kerr, he took over a good team that was already at the top of the table. I’m therefore not sure that he is the man for this award.

I love that last line “as NASA principals”.
Every K’Ogalo supporter and the entire Efusi nation have reason to rejoice and celebrate since these silver wares have been won fairly and on a level playing field.

At one time we were so optimistic that we were going to protect and defend Justice Maraga, Justices Mwilu, Lenaola and Smokin Wanjala and avenge Baby Samantha Pendo and all our fallen brothers and sisters, but somehow the campaigns to mobilize the defenders and the avengers just fizzled out. Suddenly word came out that the NASA nation would not participate in the elections. This was disappointing; very disappointing for those who wanted to restore democracy and the rule of law. However, we “understood” and accepted to live with the decision. It makes a lot of sense that we only vote when the playing field has been decontaminated.

I am in Mombasa and I know that the Tertiary Institutions in Mombasa have taken a 10-day recess to allow for the Sham Elections on 26th October. I am aware that all NASA aligned students and lecturers who registered outside Coast Province have not travelled for the elections because there will be no elections. Personally I am a registered voter in Mvita but I wont vote because “October: No Elections”. For God’s sake let the promised “Major Announcement” of 25th October not be another about-turn that tells the NASA block to participate in elections the following day. I will not waste my time and my vote in elections that I know we shall lose even if the playing field was very fair. Even NASA voters need to program themselves for any election. Someone kindly tell the NASA decision-makers that millions of NASA voters have been disenfranchised by the earlier instructions. No elections in October, Period.

Special congratulations must go to our clean sheet goalkeeper. He is one reason why we have taken this championship so early.

Congratulations, first to the playing unit. You have been a joy to watch the entire season, regardless of who was in the starting lineup. Secondly to the TB – Ze Maria and Zeddy -and then the genius Sir Kerr & Zeddy. Lastly the Excom, you have steered the ship well despite the heavy currents. Winning the league title is not easy as some of us would like to believe, it takes a lot of team work, discipline and sacrifices from all the 3 arms of a club. You deserve it. Congrats once more.

I was, I am and shall, never worried. In Kogallo I trust. For God and my beloved club – Kogallo

Breaking a chair is not a new thing in football. However, because it involves Gor Mahia, it must be amplified and made to look like a cardinal sin. Tell me, somebody, since when did one plastic chair cost 2500/-? Is this not extortion or is that the “mzungu price”? Just thinking…..suppose we get the exact design of the broken seat, buy it with an aim of replacing it, will Thicker Stadium management accept? They should if they don’t have ulterior motives.

Then let me ask: why should FKF warn Ker for disputing the Sofapaka goal, yet the man apologized most sincerely to Sofapaka and all after reviewing the goal and realizing that it was genuine? Are these not machinations to deny him the Coach of the Months of September and October and Coach of the Year awards.
