Gor Mahia are better prepared this time
In recent years Kogalo were ill prepared when they went into continental competitions. In 2009 for example, Gor Mahia feilded a side that comprised entirely of recent school leavers like Blackberry.
The Gor Mahia line-up on that day was as follows:
Jerim Onyango, Julius Awilo Owino, Stephen Otieno, Isaac Omollo, Francis Akango, Tony Onyango, Habil Otieno, Elisha Ochieno, Christopher Wekesa, George Odhiambo, Zablon Otieno.
Aside from being inexperienced, these players were playing together for the first time. The defensive looked especially confused and uncoordinated.
Then in 2012, infighting within the technical bench an interference from the EC led to a poor performance against Ferrioviario of Angola whereby Kogalo lost 4-0 on aggregate. Coach Anaba Awono had no control over the situation. Since that time, Kogalo has always had a European coach since European coaches can better fend off intereference from “cartels”. Aside from the infighting, Gor Mahia fielded a completely new side with players like Rama Salim, Hugo Nzangu, Demonde Selenga, George Midenyo etc playing together for the first time.
In 2013 and 2014, Kogalo lost North Africa sides ENPPI and Esperance that were years ahead tactically and technically. And in 2015, Gor Mahia failed to register key new signings like Meddie Kagere and as a result, lost narrowly to AC Leopards of Congo.
Gor Mahia’s last continental outing was in 2016 against the backdrop if losing key players who had led the team in scoring the previous season: Ali Abondo, Meddie Kagere and Michael Olunga. In addition, coach Frank Nuttal was in a feud with club officials who wanted him out.
In 2018, club CEO Omondi Aduda thinks the club is better prepared.
“There are no excuses this time round because things have been done differently. For instance, we began our preps early enough and the players underwent a high altitude training. We have also worked very hard and assembled a quality team.” he told the Nation.
Also Gor Mahia have kep most of the players who featured for the club last season with the exception of Kenneth Muguna and Musa Mohamed.
Matches against arch rivals AFC Leopards and KCCA of Uganda have served to sharpen the club and increase cohesion.
