Gor Mahia beat Lobi Stars 3-1

Samuel Onyango is mobbed by team-mates after scoring

Gor Mahia’s chances of qualifying for the champions league group stage look excellent. This after they beat Lobi Stars of Nigeria 3-1 at Kasarani. Jacque Tuyisenge scored the opener. Samuel Onyango scored the second goal. The Nigerians then pulled one back before Samuel Onyango added a third. All goals came in the first half.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Gor Mahia took a giant step at qualifying for the lucrative Caf Champions League group stage after a 3-1 win over Nigeria’s Lobi Stars in their first round first leg match at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

Kenyan international winger Samuel Onyango struck within 12 minutes to add onto Jacques Tuyisenge’s sixth-minute opener. Mathias Samuel had pulled one back for the visitors in the half-hour mark.

Tuyisenge, who started up front for the on-form Ivorian striker Ephrem Guikan, the latter ineligible for this round, was audaciously put through on goal by Francis Kahata to fire home with a ferocious right volley past goalkeeper Ospina Egbe sending the close to 5,000 Gor faithful in the stands into a frenzy.

Onyango doubled the lead on 21 minutes with an outrageous bicycle kick from inside the six-yard box.

Francis Mustafa had failed to connect with Tuyisenge’s clipped cross from the right flank and with Lobi defenders unable to clear their lines, Onyango capitalised on the scuffle for his first goal in this campaign.

Samuel reduced the deficit at the half hour mark with a glancing header from a Kwambe Solomon corner kick that hit the upright of the left post, before sailing into the back of the net with Gor goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch stranded.

Lobi had been forced to their first change two minutes before by pulling out injured defender Umar Zango for Austine Ogunye.

On 33 minutes, Onyango completed his brace in an outstanding fashion thanks to a porous Lobi defence.

The former Ulinzi Stars man dispossessed left-back Duru Chidiebube, darted down the right flank before rounding the onrushing Lobi custodian Ospina Egbe and weaved through defenders Umar Zango and Emmanuel Agbaji, who had recovered in time to stop him, before smashing in an empty net to end an action packed first half.

The second half was a tale of missed opportunities for the hosts. Tuyisenge thought he had claimed a brace on 66 minutes after lobbing the ball over Egbe, but his follow up effort missed the target with the Rwandan striker collapsing to the ground in shock – as was his coach Hassan Oktay.

A minute later, Mustafa forced Egbe into a fingertip save with a shot inside the area, before Oktay withdrew Onyango for George “Blackberry” Odhiambo.

Gor made two changes from the team that brushed aside Zoo Kericho 4-0 in a league match here on Wednesday.

Tuyisenge rested Guikan as Joash replaced Paschal Ogweno at the back.

Boniface Oluoch easily collected Kadri Timileyin’s shot to force the first save of the match three minutes into time.

  • Congratulations mighty kogallo. The away goal is a bit threatening because we play them away and many factors might favor them, God forbid!!! As usual it was Oluoch’ s poor timing of a corner ball that gifted them the goal. We ask the Almighty God to favor gor away with at least a draw.

3-1 is a gud score. Congrats team Gor. I expected more from Lobi stars. What supprised me is that Nigerians fear Gor as a club.
So long as Gor is not subjected to west African treatment, all is well.

Congratulations boys for a job almost well-done. You engineered a win in spite of some unpleasant off-the field matters. This confirms your pedigree. What if the off-field distraction didn’t exist? I believe you could do far better. Just give it one last push and you are home and dry in the group stages.

I dedicate the first goal to Gibrilla. At least his grieving parents have a reason to smile. I dedicate the second and third goals to that 5-year-old deaf and dumb Sierra Leonian street boy who was tortured and beaten by six strong and armed Nigerian ECOMOG forces and made to run naked in the streets as Sorius Samora was forced to record everything in camera and beam to the whole world.Six armed men against a defenceless deaf and dumb 5-year-old. What can one do with information from a 5-year old? How can that information come from a deaf and dumb? It is always my joy whenever Nigerians lose in any sport.

Well we delivered and God was on our side. Praise and glory to the most high. Our target was a higher scoreline but the away goal made us act cautious. Forgive the long balls in the second half as we still have a problem with our central holding midfield pairing. All in all let us he happy as we go back to plot for the 2nd leg. Congrats boys for a well deserved win…

Your writimgs suggest a level of leadership in Gor Mahia. Is there a reason these boys are NOT being paid in a timely fashion? Why the casual management of the club as we see elsewhere in everything Kenyan? I strongly support sponsors like Sport Pesa paying the playing unit directly. The boys deserve better.

Congratulations Gor Mahia players. Go to Nigeria and play as if you never won in Kenya. Please, dont celebrate yet though you did us proud. Getting into the CAF champions league will give you more exposure which will attract scouts all over the world for your services. In addition there is 56 million waiting for you. Forget the off pitch problems like salaries…though we urge Gor Mahia EC to pay you to ensure you are comfortable. As fans, you have our full support concerning your salary.

Go to Nigeria and fight like wounded lions. Forget the Kenyan win. Go..Go..Go….Mighty Gor Mahia.

This team is good. The coach is also good. EC kazi kwako.
It’s only 5 days to return leg and we are as good as in group stage.
Those who always wish the team bad luck, give us break until we are through to group stage.

  • If I was a player with an ambition , I would exactly what the team has done today I.e look at the bigger picture , use this platform Gor has provided me and give my all for it is what I do in the pitch that determines my future .
Any player’s dream is to go pro most preferably in Europe and there is no team that gives you that platform locally than Gor Mahia , despite and inspite of its shortcomings because if you to perform poorly , apart from getting temporary sympathy from we the fans , of what value to your career would that give you , ofcourse you , so yes , the EC may not be creating that ideal situation for you but ultimately your future belongs entirely to you and any player joining Gor is conpletely aware of its shortcomings but joins anyway and all those thinking professionally knows why .
All said and done, the EC must up its game and give cesar what belongs to cesar , its not a favour , its a right and a big big congratulations for your exploits today , you have made as so so proud and we expect more of such going forward .

Congratulations and go to Nigeria to defend with all your lives….I dedicate the win to Zico, who is away on a short medical leave and we hope to have him back for the second leg as clean sheet tactics will be greatly needed in Nigeria.

Kogalo lobbies 3 goals into past lobi stars’ into the net. it was a match that some skeptics had already said that going by the recent start of our league, kogalo was limping. To them Lobi Stars were being glorified as a good team. To the point that they even rubbished the new coach as useless. One can actually give it to them. It is said that once you do not have conviction about something, you might as well not take it. It is not what is wrong with the other person, but it is something wrong with you the individual. No body plans to loose in a competition but always to win. The team has proved them wrong. Every player wants to do their best, Looking at how the goals were scored, they were done with conviction and determination. The balls were not stumbled upon. It was a result of team work. You could feel and see it that they were out to do everything possible to post good results. Well, I am not saying that they were perfect because there is nothing like perfection in any competition. They were simply there to play and let every body know that they have goal to achieve in the continental arena. During the search for a new coach, I had suggested that any coach who would be hired be made aware that Gor should be felt in the Continent and not just the local league. I am sure the players are also on the same page. This I believe is the driving force behind the team’s performance. To me it might just be the case of Nyasa Bullets who claimed they knew how they were going to beat Gor. Lobi Stars coach said he still has good players who can can turn the tables in Nigeria. My line of thought is if they couldn’t do it here how confident are they that it will happen there. I can imagine the pressure they have brought upon themselves in their own backyard. Congratulations………………………………Kogalo Oyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Congrats to Kogallo boys. I remember our technical advisers of this site had recommended Samuel Onyango, Guikan etc to be sent on loan. Coaches make or break players. I see Guikan, Sammy Onyango playing a central role in Oktay’s squad. Like I have always said, leave everything to the TB. They spend time with the players and they know who is fit to play what game.

Amor, Piny Mor, Polo bende Mor. For God and my beloved club – Kogallo.
