Gor Mahia beat Mount Kenya 4-1

Gor Mahia destroyed Mount Kenya United 4-1 in a midweek KPL match on Wednesday. Erisa Sekisambu struck three times. It was the first hatrick of the league this season. Dennis Oliech added to his tally.

Additional Reporting from the Nation

Ugandan import Erisa Ssekisambu struck a hat-trick while Dennis Oliech added another one from the spot as champions Gor Mahia eases past 10-man Mount Kenya United 4-1 in a SportPesa Premier League (SPL) at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Wednesday.

Former Gor midfielder Moses “Dube” Odhiambo came off the bench to grab a consolation for the visitors who were reduced to 10 men after defender Frank Balabala was sent off on 63 minutes.

A minute of silence was observed before kick off in honour of Tuesday’s Riverside terror attack victims among them football enthusiast James Oduor Radido alias Cobra.

Cobra was an ardent Gor Mahia and local football fan. He was at Kasarani on Sunday when the Kenyan champions laboured to beat New Stars de Doula of Cameroon in the first leg of their Caf Confederation Cup play off.

Mount Kenya remain bottom of the log on two points, 12 below Gor after eight games though the champions have a game in hand.

Ssekisambu netted the opener three minutes after referee Hoses Omondi got the encounter underway by tapping home George “Blackberry” Odhiambo cross.

Oliech converted a 58th minute penalty after Francis Mustafa hacked down in the box by Kelvin Thairu. Mount Kenya protested the penalty brewing a scuffle that led to Balabala’s red card.

Moses Odhiambo, who replaced John “Softie” Ndirangu in the 55th minute, capitalised on a miscued clearance from Shaffik Batambuze to reduce the deficit before Ssekisambu added his second and Gor’s third on 77 minutes after slotting home Batambuze’s left foot inswinger.

Odhiambo could have claimed a brace but his 89th minute penalty hit the crossbar before Gor cleared their lines.

Ssekisambu then completed his hat-trick after he was teed up by Oliech at the death.

Mount Kenya caused Gor problems early on with Samuel Ndung’u’s precise cross from the left flank going unanswered.

On 38 minutes, Francis Mustafa’s glancing header missed the target after connecting to a Shaffik Batambuze cross.

Ivorian striker Ephrem Guikan had his shot from inside the box miss the target five minutes earlier much to the chagrin of a few fans that had turned up for the midweek clash.

Mount Kenya fluffed a glorious chance to pull level on 39 minutes. Paul Odhiambo charged down the right flank to deliver a cross that fell into Ndung’u’s waiting legs but the former Mathare United man volleyed wide six yards out.

On 41 minutes, the dangerous Ndung’u dribbled past Wellington Ochieng’ to weigh in a long ball from a tight angle but Gor custodian Peter Odhiambo did well to parry it out for a fruitless corner.

Gor coach Hassan Oktay pulled off the misfiring Guikan for the legendary Oliech on 42 minutes, a change that left the Ivorian furiously charging back to the dressing room as fans jeered him off.

Though a win is a win, I don’t want to be carried away by this one. MT Kenya club is the punching bag of KPL this season. They have literally lost to all teams. I am reserving my celebrations for Cameroon. I hope I shall.

We lose it is ooh oktay oknyal ooh bring back zico ooh foreign players are useless. We win it is ooh mount kenya is not a team worth winning against ooh we are average. I repeat oktay will come good and surpass all expectations by delivering silverware. GM will also re-write history by fighting to win in Cameroon and qualifying for CCC group stage. Congrats team for the huge win and Erisa Ssekisambu for the hat trick the first of this KPL season…

I took time off today and went to the stadia to support the boys ….this win is NOT worth talking about. The defence was confused, midfield pathetic and strike force, not sure what to say. Had Mt Kenya not lost the defender , i think the game could have ended 2-2.

I told the powers that be on their face…SHOULD we loose in Doula, its time to call a spade , a spade, LET OKTAY LEAVE US IN PEACE !!

Jakoyo why do you always wish our beloved te doom and gloom? What has Oktay done that he should leave gor in peace? How many other coaches including Logarusic…Bobby Williamson…Frank Nuttal or Ze Maria qualified GM to group stages of Caf? That feat was onky achieved by Sir Kerr and now Oktay is on the brink of doing the same and needs our support not this things you are writing here which resemble yugii. Which powers that be can you threaten omera Oktay is here to stay regardless of Caf outcome. Erisa scored a hat trick and oliech from the spot but you despise their effort by saying madharau hapo juu…Sio poa it demoralizes the team

  • Let me be counted among those wishing the best for Gor. I know Gor will thrash that Cameroun side on a level playing field. Cameroun and Ghana make the few number of countries in Africa that would rather do their fighting on the pitch than ‘at the airport’. The other countries being Zambia and S.Africa. Apparently Kenya makes this list. So Gor Mahia shud not be worried about mistreatment.
I have come to realise that most fearful enemy facing Gor is the corrupt EC officials.
The pattern is emerging at Gor that every other time the club has done well in Africa, the club has ended up hitting rock bottom.

When Abbas Khamisi Magongo was poached from TZ to become a Kenyan citizen Jakoyos of those days protested, he became a club legend second to non. Dawo Omuga joins Gor Jakoyos protested, he is the only player in this region having achieved that fate. Jack Johnson is brought on board with a new playing format. Jadala and Jakoyos walilalamika vikali sana. He brought a continental silverware. Little to say about the rest, Leo the same drums are pounding in earnest. Yes brother Oduor12 i don’t believe Oktay will fail hence no need for a fall back plan. He has two years with us and will take us far and win Silverware. Dec salaries and allowances were partly paid ladt friday as we also have the Cameroon trip to think of as well which costs alot and we are trying hard not to unleash begging bowls that tarnish brand GM. We are supposed to settle balances by close of business today after getting all air tickets ready. The financial situation at GM is dicey hence my tendency to concentrate on the technical aspects of the team helping the Coach get his groove on. Sally Bolo handles that side.

Bwana kubwa, Janam, what is this obsession with Ja’Asego? Be a wise man and never be in hurry to attack or insult someone you neither see nor know. The allure of reckless aggression in social media is quite tempting, but it can have serious consequences.

Meanwhile Gor Mahia midfielder Kenneth Muguna walked out on the team just before their league match against Mt. Kenya United at the Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday.
The former Kenyan Premier League most valuable player refused to board the team bus at the hotel after realizing he was not going to start the game.
“Muguna totally refused to board the team bus after realizing he was not in the starting line up,”.

“Efforts by the team manager (Jolawi Obondo) to have him change his mind fell on deaf ears as the player proceeded home.”
He was, according to a source within the technical bench, to substitute Francis Kahata, who coach Hassan Oktay wanted to give some rest ahead of Sunday’s Confederation Cup match away to New Stars de Douala in Limbe, Cameroon.

Oktay has made it known that only players who impress in training will get to play.

Muguna’s performance has been below par, let him follow his heart but carry his brain along. Guikan should have walked away even last week. Gor is not a club of mediocrity and no amount of persuasion will silence Gor fans. Whoever thinks he is more equal than others in the playing unit is in a wrong place. This is not shamba la wanyama.

@odhis my namesake, how is it true that Muguna is below par yet he has only been fielded in two games where he came in as a substitute in the dying minutes. Put together the lad has not even played 30 minutes of competitive football this season. Is that enough to rate his performance?
