Gor Mahia beat Nyasa Big Bullets, sail to next round

Gor Mahia are through to the next round of the Africa Champions league after eliminating Nyasa Big Bullets. This after they won a penalty shootout against the Malawian League leaders by a score of 4-3. The match had ended in 1-0 in regulation in favour of Bullets.

It is a repeat of 1977 when Gor Mahia eliminated Yamaha Wanderers of Malawi, beating them 5-3 on post match penalties in Blantyre. The much maligned Boniface Oluoch turned hero, saving a  Chiukepo Msowoya  penalty in the 87th minute that would have eliminated Gor Mahia, and saving another during the shootout.

Ondiek was a hero again, scoring the first penalty. Boniface Omondi, Humphrey Mieno and Harun Shakava also scored from the spot. For the Malawians, Msowoya, Lanjesi and Fodya scored. Gabeya’s kick was saved by Oluoch. Pilirani’s shot was off target.

Additional reporting from goal.com
Gor Mahia needed penalty shootout to progress to the next stage of the Caf Champions League following a 1-1 (4-3 aggregate) victory on Wednesday.

The Kenyan champions beat Nyasa Big Bullets of Malawi 5-4 on aggregate after a dramatic second leg staged at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi.

Keeper Boniface Oluoch was the toast for the Kenyan side after saving two penalties, one in regulation time and another in the shootout to bundle out Nyasa Big Bullets.

Gor Mahia took time to settle into the game; allowing Bullets to dictate the first quarter of the opening half. Only George Odhiambo came close within the first five minutes.

Nyasa Big Bullets won a dangerous free-kick from the left side, but Boniface Oluoch was on a high alert t parry the ball to safety.

Just like Gor Mahia, the host had absolutely no hunger for success. It took Nyasa Big Bullets 31 minutes to have the first attempt on goal. But Gor Mahia was not different either.

Shakava was solid at the back, but his final touches on the ball let him down. Odhiambo was lethargic upfront. Clearly, the absence of Jacques Tuyisenge was being felt by the Kenyan champions.

Poor marking and a bad decision by Boniface Oluoch gave Big Bullets the first goal, just 10 minutes after the restart. Chiugepo Msowoya controlled a harmless looking ball before firing a dipping shot past Oluoch, who had left his line as Nyasa Big Bullets took a deserved lead at the break.

Oluoch, however, made up for his mistake with arguably the biggest save of the year when he denied Nyasa Big Bullets from the spot. Gor Mahia had conceded a penalty with only four minutes to the final minute, but Oluoch dived the right side to save a casually taken penalty by Msowoya.

The save sent the game into a shootout and once again Oluoch dived to the right side to deny Marakesh Kubeya. Shakava, Humphrey Mieno, Benard Ondiek all converted their spot kicks for Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia XI: Boniface Oluoch (GK), Philemon Otieno, Joash Onyango, Harun Shakava (captain), Shafik Batambuze, Humphrey Mieno, Ernest Wendo, George Odhiambo, Samuel Onyango, Francis Mustafa and Erisa Ssekisambu.

Zico was destined to do the job. congratulations once more but 3 games , 1 goal. Am not sure whether to celebrate further or to be sad ! what is the criteria for being employed as a striker in Gor mahia. someone enlighten me on why blackberry and mustafa continue to enjoy impunity ?

I simply said what made the Nyasa team captain to say that they knew how they would beat Gor. If it did not work out in the first leg in Nairobi, what would make it work in the second leg. Thank you for beating them in their own backyard. Kogallo oyeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Greetings from Blantyre. Some of the fans rightfully said that we (players) should be fighting to win games so that Zico can remain head coach instead of giving away games like we did with sharks. Well, we won this one for Zico; will he now be appointed the head coach on a permanent basis? If not things are about to go really bad. We will loose games mpaka you will be crying and wailing on your knees with your hands up!…. the ball is in your court EC and fans

Has Bonnie vindicated himself? I say Yes. What now happens to those in this site who wrote us off. Is Zico better than we think? Anyway Kudos to the team. I know we still lack the punch upfront but we hope to start hitting the eight notes soon. The game against Bandari is coming at the right time

  • I really hate it when fake fans predict doom and gloom for kogalo and then sit back and pray that their prediction comes true so that they can have their “I told you so moment”-well sorry for your disappointment , we won ugly but any professional will tell u that sometimes u just have to win like that , as for the petty canine on this wall posting rubbish supposedly from Blantyre , he reminds of its owner who is a long serving member of this wall who a few years ago was purpotedly posting updates about our match in west africa while in essense he was in Dandora -we must learn to separate our feelings about individuals in the club from the team , dont wish ill for the team bcoz of your difference with some individuals.

  • Thx for sparing us the shame of a first round elimination. Now we can eye the kes.55m CL or at least the kes.27.5 CC group stages. Work on Jausenge’s injury, Kahata & Muguna decide either you play for GM or just ship out now.GK Fred is still safer bet!

  • Beautiful, beautiful. Congrats boys. Just a little polish and we will surely be where we want.

One thing i learnt some time back is to respect our scouts. I believe the players we are busy killing on social media will come good. That’s how we have dominated locally for many years.

I watched the game and realised Bony’s ball distribution is better than all our keepers. He makes a few errors in judgement but i think he is our best bet for now.

I also realised we have a new coach already working. Karibu Oktal to mayienga. Winning the league and beating Ingwe are bare minimums, now add Bandari to the list.

Congratulations boys and TB led by New Coach Hassan Oktay who was on the touchline throughout dictating proceedings. How can a probationary or intern coach be on the touchline animatedly doing head coach roles while the assistant is sitting down then EC tells us he is not Head Coach Yet? Anyway special thanks and congrats to Boniface Oluoch today we owe it to you that we are through to the 1st round of CCL. I don’t want to say more other than am sourcing for a striker and playmaker trying to convince EC we sign two more players as our attack is not up to par. Zico congrats too you got us the advantage to head out with i recognize that too. Some of us love GM and always wish the best so let’s strategize for Bandari and Lobi Stars who are a very decent team. We need a good goal cushion at home to stand a chance in Nigeria…Finally and most importantly i Thank Almighty God for his grace and favour upon GM today

  • Things to note; against Everton Batambuze would deliver crosses at the final third while from there on he wants to do it from the middle of the park. Mustapha was signed to always fall down. The tikitaka employed after B Omondi came in created more chances than those long balls. Who has statistics on Shakava passes completed coz those long balls always ended in wrong hands

Innocent Wafula is leaving on the Bosman at the end of this month when his contract ends. Apparently Aduda believes we are very well covered at right back position that has Philemon and Wellington Ochieng with Pascal Ogweno also able to slot there when required…

Those guys can’t match Wafula’s overlapping runs only comparable to Karim. Anyway best of luck Innocent, may God guide as you persue your future endeavours wherever.

  • i dont really fear about the local league, that one is done and dusted. Gor Mahia will scrap through it and win it. Players will gell in the coming three or four league matches. What concerns me is the CAF competitions. Our attackers are currently blunt and overrated. When Lobi stars come here I would like to see Francis Mustapha and Erisa Ssekisambu run and attack until they get heart attacks in the field. It is only then that I will be convinced that they have given their 100% for the team. On my part as a fan is just to buy a ticket come to the stadium and make so much noise.
