Gor Mahia beat Western Stima 1-0 in Kisumu on Wednesday. A late goal by Michael Olunga was what Gor Mahia needed to beat a stubborn Western Stima side. Gor Mahia only have one more match left to complete a historic season.

Gor Mahia showed that they have the resiliency to win matches under different condictions.

Towering striker Michael Olunga made the difference after he powered home the all important goal in the 89th minute to break the hearts of Western Stima, who had looked determined to snatch a draw.

The match looked set for a barren draw before Olunga sneaked between two defenders to beat Gabriel Andika from close range. Stima were the more aggressive side in the opening minutes of the match and were rewarded with a third minute corner.

Despite going into the match after a long travel from Mombasa, the power men looked to be in control of the midfield and were keen to deny their opponents an opportunity to pass the ball around.

Ali Abondo, who has been on fire since returning to Gor Mahia’s starting line-up, got a chance with an 18-yard thunderbolt in the seventh minute. One minute later Michael Olunga, failed to beat Gabriel Andika in Stima goal. Olunga had done well to loop the ball past Andika but the Stima custodian reacted quickly to clear the danger on the goal-line.

Ten minutes into the match, John Kiplangat nearly beat Boniface Oluoch but his effort went over the bar. Gor Mahia danger man Meddie Kagere, made his presence felt with a tricky shot from the edge of Stima’s goal and it should have counted. From there on, Gor Mahia looked to be in control going into the break.

The league champions ended the first half on a high with George Odhiambo’s well executed shot parried out of play by Gabriel Andika for a fruitless corner. Stima coach Henri Omino rested Ronald Okoth for Kevin Okoth as the second half started but it was still Gor Mahia, who made the first attempt to go ahead in the second half with Karim Nizigiyimana sending a well taken cross on the right flank in search of Kagere but Joash Onyango was quicker to clear the danger.

Stima also rested David Okello for an ineffective John Kiplangat. Gor Mahia kept up the pressure forcing their opponents into fouls. Victor Ochieng was cautioned for a foul on Meddie Kagere and then Khalid Aucho and Ali Abondo both had their shots go just wide.

Historic season indeed….please stay in kisumu one more week to wrap up your celebrations and maximise gate collection…..nairobi will never attract such a huge crowd for a mid week match.

Secondly….it would be foolish not to consider the king of assists karim nizigimana as footballer of the year.

Congratulations are in order to the Mighty Kogalo, players, TB, the EC and followers alike. Everyone remotely connected to this storied club deserves to be congratulated for staying true to their calling. The fans have faithfully attended our matches across the country. From Kisumu to Mombasa, Awendo to Nairobi not to mention those away days at the difficult Afraha Stadium in Nakuru. The followers have endlessly contributed in various harambees, offered prayers to the team and turned out in large numbers during matches to cheer the team to victory. The TB has continued to meticulously prepare the team regardless of the myriad financial challenges the team has faced this season. Our unbeaten status is a testament to this. The EC, led by the indefatigable AR must take their rightful place when the history of this Club is told and written. The year 2015 will remain a historic one once we finish the season unbeaten and win the 2 remaining trophies- The Gotv Shield and the Top 8 Tournament. There comes a time when greatness is thrust upon a team – that time is now and our players must seize the opportunity to realize this Destiny. It is in your hands gentlemen.. As coach FN has always maintained, focus is key for this to happen. To our ever adoring fans, please kindly observe discipline and keep off the pitch and the trophy presentation area during and after the FINAL match. THIS will allow the players to savour the celebrations with their families and friends. Thank you. .

We as fans have to do our part and contribute to the team. Don’t take success for granted. If there is a massive player exodus, the team could finish in 4th position next season and lose in the preliminary round of the Champions league. Don’t take anything for granted

  • Abok Nyamwanda says:

Guys 1976, where were you, me i was 2 years old, now 2015, same mahono wonder, there are four mahono wonders, 1. 1979 continental finals, 2. 1984, 84, 85 Len Juliens wonder, 1987 the mighty Gor Mahono 8th wonder of the world, and 2015 the wuod Ogalo and Prof Nutal wonder, what a lovely team, all my blood and every ounce of blood is dedicated to my mighty Mahono, for thee we pride and celebrate, for thee we seek mighty football, may God grant thee all glory and honour and may you grant all the wins even upon Barcelona and Bayern, these i pray and request the Almighty Lord Jesus to grant.

  • Allan Odongo says:

The team has done us proud throughout the entire season. I have never been so eager to watch a Gor Mahia match and even when I miss game, I always make sure I watch a repeat on supersport. We are almost there boys…..

Lastly, I want to urge, request and plead with our loyal and committed fans to let the players bask in their glory when the trophy is presented to the team. Letting the players enjoy themselves is good for TV, marketing of the team and also historical purposes. The scenes witnessed in Kisumu last season are not good. The EC should ensure there is enough security to oversee the players celebration. Fans should also take responsibility and restrain fellow uncouth fans.
