Gor Mahia beats Leones Vegeterianos 2-0
Gor Mahia started their 2018 Africa Champions league campaign with a solid performance, beating Equatorial Guinea side Leones Vegeterianos by a score of 2-0. The goals were scored by new signings Kevin Omondi and Ephrem Guikan.

The hosts went ahead in the 20th minute through prodigal son Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi who nodded home from a Meddie Kagere headed cross. Humphrey Mieno missed a penalty six minutes later following a handball in the area. Ivorian forward Ephrem Guikan then got Gor’s second goal with a venous drive at the hour mark barely 30 seconds were coming on.
Strong start
Gor Mahia started the game strongly in search of the early opener that would help settle the nerves.
The first opportunity fell to Meddie Kagere in the fifth minute but his shot from a Godfrey Walusimbi delivery didn’t trouble Vegetarianos number one Manuel Sapunga.
Kagere and Kevin Omondi were denied two clear cut chances in quick succession by the offiside flag with Leones’ offside trap working to their advantage much to the frustration of the hosts. The visitors barely threatened Boniface Oluoch on Gor Mahia goal; their long range attempts were easily picked by Olouch.
Ade opener
Gor Mahia’s early pressure finally bore fruits in the 20th minute when Kevin Omondi put the Kenyan champions ahead. A well floated ball from Godfrey Walusimbi was headed to Omondi’s path by Kagere and the forward did the needful with a tidy low finish.
Mieno miss
Six minutes later, Gor Mahia won a penalty after a handball from a Leones defender. Former Tusker FC midfielder Humphey Mieno stepped up to take but his kick was saved by the visitors’ keeper, Sapunga.
The visitor barely threatened Gor with their attacking pair of Nguema Mosso and Afugu Nkogo starved up front. Gor Mahia took a 1-0 lead to the break despite creating numerous chances in the first stanza.
Dominant Gor
Gor Mahia continued to dominate proceedings after the interval. Meddie Kagere’s header from a well take George Odhiambo free-kick in the 52nd minute went over the bar while Sapunga came off his line to deny Gor after a defensive mix up from the visitors minutes later.
Super sub
At the hour mark, Ephrem Guikan made his introduction count scoring with his first touch. The forward cut in from the right before firing home from 30-yards out, Sapunga could do little to deny the attacker. Sapunga denied Guikan his second in the 70th minute parrying another scorcher from the left footed attacker.
Depsite creating more chances, the hosts failed to get more goals and in the end settled for a 2-0 win ahead of the return leg.

@jasego, remember me telling you last week that Guikan will score those goals where the keeper does not know he has conceded until he meets the ball coming back from the net. No sooner had my saliva dried than he unleashed a belter…that aside, it seemed we played in second gear. Now our task would be to go there and try to sneak an early goal to complicate the math for them. At the same time avoiding to concede early. Lastly the boys need to toughten up because those W.African teams always intimidate and mistreat opponents thoroughly!!!!
Haha musymo,yes you surely did and don’t forget i told you he is my man to watch this season,hasnt taken a starting role yet as he is coming from a long injury lay off but once on form no striker will match him in Kpl in terms of out and out typical goalscorer
First, tactical blunder from Kerr…me thinks he should have played 4-2-2-2 with wendo and mieno in the midfield, samuel onyango on the right wing and kevin ade on the left wing, guikan and kagere in the middle but nevertheless , lessons learnt and the vegeterians simply dont have the gas to match our play if we turn the heat on in the second leg ! did they even have a shot on goal……
Second, isn’t our first choice penalty taker not meddie kagere, what happened ? Mieno has a very poor penalty record.
Lastly, lets raise some kshs 3 million for the club to purchase new training and playing kits Yajowa! this sportpesa retired logo on an old uniform is an eye sore. do you agree ? where is his majesty, right reverend, almighty legendary chairman to the rescue……..

Congrats for a job well done but we must convert all the many chances created. For the missed penalty, we cannot lay the blame on Mieno. The coach must have in the team a designated penalty taker. I thought Kagere had his name nailed as the rightful owner of the duty? We can still win the second leg away in Equatorial Guinea.

Not an awe-inspiring performance. Only Musymo and Guikan came out tops today. I am left a very worried man. That kind of display cannot take us past Esperance and that is if we are lucky to survive in West Africa. The two matches I have watched ( charity cup and today’s) has left me wondering why so much talk from coach Ker yet the team is playing ugly football.
This kind of display betrays the quality of players we have recruited. The back stops with the tactician. Gor Mahia must just play more exciting and purposeful football. What happened to the kind of game we played against Everton and Efusi in Dar?
It was premature for Mieno to take that penalty. It has just put more pressure on him. How I wish he left the penalty to Meddie, but then Meddie himself was totally off colour today and actually should have been substituted in the first half. Mieno should not be in a hurry to announce his arrival. There is enough time for him to cement his name in Gor Mahia’s history.
Gor Mahia is not playing well at all and our game must improve. Period.

Remember the season that we won unbeaten, kagere cost us the Gotv finals by missing the penalty against nakumatt, let’s not crucify mieno even messi misses, we should instead encourage him, good game though, let’s hope for a clean sheet in the second leg
@BB, let us not judge the team right now as this team has not played together apart from few players that have been together with the team and please note tha the season has just started. Once the team will have played five games, I think they will pick rythm and gelled together.

Why then did the scoreline remain 2-0? That is too narrow to offer comfort.
We congratulate the boys for the victory but they still looked lethargic and sluggish, poor passes, unnecessary long and aimless balls, slow speed and poor transition, among others. They must work hard if they want to reach the group stage. As much as it’s goals that matter after the final whistle, fans also want value for their hard earned cash. They need to be entertained. In my opinion, the game was boring
At this rate can we reach any of the CAF group stages??? Locally we may outmatch the competition but continentally it seems we will be outmatched come the very next round. There’s a lot of work to be done and we must not be complacent even in the return match against the Veges otherwise they may just pull a nasty surprise. Their GK was outstanding and i don’t blame Mieno for the penalty miss twas a good save. But,Jasego, what’s this obession with signing injury prone players. Hope ile maneno that Gor plays better away from still holds.
Oduor12…Big players,the typei refer to as continental stalwarts like guikan dont come cheap in terms of personal renumeration of transfer fees and agent sign on fees.Signing them with full knowledge of their potential therefore takes precedence after assessing the injuries to determine they are minor like we did with him.He is almost back to his lethal best and kogalo and kpl will both be electrified once he does
That’s reassuring and i hope the same applies to Mieno, that he is not carrying some recurrent / nagging knee injury that will limit his productivity.
Mieno has just slowed down abit based on age,if we got him back in 2014 straight from Azam instead of him opting for ingwe or 2015 instead of tusker we woukd have gotten his best years of service.Still with diet,training discipline & going the extra mile he can still rediscover his mojo and give us the much needed box to box role player we so much require

A good start in football and especially at home is to not concede. The vegetables will be under so much pressure playing at home and not to concede. The beaty of an away goal is that we can still lose 3:1 and still qualify. Once we score one they will have to score 4 to eliminate us. Gor Mahia are on their way to meeting Esperance once again and this time we might just surprise them. They struggled to draw against some obscure team from Mauritius called ASAC Concorde. Le Pastre,giants struggled galore yesterday…Yanga managed to just squeeze one past past St Michel of Seychelles,KCCA lost 2-1 at home to CNAPS our long time Nemesis,Zesco United of Zambia drew 0-0 with little know JKU of Zanzibar,Only Zanaco beat an air force team of botswana 3-0.Esperance will finish business back in Tunis after drawing goalless away in Mauritania though i wish they be surprisingly eliminated.We remain hopeful but Kogalo must up the tempo and display better football

Some positive to draw from our performance against Vegeterianos is our level of discipline. Worthy to note that we picked no yellow cards against Vegeterianos’ three. Kudos Ker for that. However, woe unto us because, as has been observed by Ja’Asego and Musymo, we are in for mistreatment galore in West Africa. No matter what happens, the entire team must maintain its cool. God forbid but I am seeing red cards to our very industrious two fullbacks (Walusimbi and Wellington), Bonny and Ker himself. They shall get red cards not because of any offense, but simply because it is a West African strategy when playing at home.
Our full backs stood out against Vegeterianos and so one would wish to neutralize them in order to penetrate through the wings. Therefore our game plan and fielding in Equatorial Guinea. should be to keep them busy in their own third so as to deny the referee an excuse of issuing unwarranted red cards to our keeper and the back four. Keeping them in their own half requires players with “singing feet” in the midfield and in the attack. I have in mind Onguso at fullback 3, then Wendo, Lawrence Juma, Walusimbi, Philemon and Kahata in the starting midfield and Boniface Omondi and Guikan to torment their rearguard..
I still believe they are a good team and that their lethargic display was mainly due to our high altitude. Back in West Africa, at near sea level, those boys can be dangerous if allowed room to play their short passes. It was also evident that they rely on penetrating from the wings, something our fullbacks did not allow completely.

My man of the match wendo ..he bossed the mid with kahata and mieno aiding in attack my only worry is the missed chances and the long balls mostly from the defence line…… if pple can remember the game against Azam….the order for that day was long balls and even with the best striking force in the region we weren’t able to cause any trouble to them…. esperance is on the way if we play like that i don’t expect much my only worry is the no 10 position we need some one to claim it for consistency … i advocate for meddie and 9 for guikan ….. gor is top of this fixture and was..we go to gb and close this game…. strong show though!
Seville i concur,currently an experimental Ade as number 10 & meddie 9 is preferred by coach.But naturally Ade is an offensive right winger 7,Meddie strives best as a centre forward behind the out & out striker like he did with olunga.So best combination is Meddie 10 and can alternate it with Ade if coach wants Or lawrence juma and Guikan 9 and can alternate it with tuyisenge.
