Gor Mahia blank AFC 2-0, win League title

Scorer: Boniface Omondi

Gor Mahia are officially the 2018 Kenya premier league champions. They did it in grand style, beating arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0
Additional reporting from the Nation
K’Ogalo marched to their unprecedented 17th title with a convincing 2-0 win over arch-rivals AFC Leopards in a Saturday’s Mashemejii derby clash at Kasarani stadium to amass an unassailable 71 points with six matches to spare.

This becomes the third time Gor are sealing the title with matches to spare after doing so during the 2015 and 2017 campaigns, where they finished business with five games to the end of the season.

Boniface Omondi and Bernard Ondiek’s strikes in the 31st and 44th minutes gave the Kenyan giants a two-goal cushion at the break.

Whyvonne Isuza, returning after a two-match suspension, had a chance to reduce the deficit at the stroke of halftime but his spot kick after a handball by Charles Momanyi inside the penalty box curved high and wide with goalkeeper Peter Odhiambo sent the wrong side.

The game had been stopped for five minutes after rowdy Leopards fans hurled seats on the pitch side protesting a foul on Baker Lukooya that led to Gor’s second goal.

Samuel Onyango dispossessed Lukooya to put through Omondi who did well to set up Ondiek and the latter easily planted the ball with his right foot to the far corner, with Ezekiel Owade beaten in Leopards goal.

Ingwe had the first sniff on goal five minutes after referee Felix Ekai blew the opening whistle, but Brian Marita fired wide from an Alex Orotomal pass.

In the 27th minute, Edward Seda blocked Orotomal’s attempt at goal from an Isaac Oduro inch-perfect cross into the box after Wesley Onguso had deflected the Ghanaian’s free kick for the corner.

Four minutes later, speedy winger Omondi fired the hosts into the lead with a rasping shot from outside the box that Owade could only watch helplessly as it rolled into the bottom right corner.

Hungry for the equalizer, Leopards pushed on amidst a buzzing atmosphere from jubilant Gor fans but Oduro’s 36th minute free kick was cleared by Gor defence led by Charles Momanyi.

Leopards, missing seven players to injury, were a shadow of themselves in the final stanza as Gor walked out worthy winners for the 29th time in 89 meetings against their nemesis who’ve secured 28 wins previously.

Gor will wind up what has been a fantastic month of football albeit punctuated with congested fixtures, away to Algerian side USM Alger Wednesday next week in their final Caf Confederation Cup group “D” tie, while Ingwe, who last lost a match coincidentally to Gor on July 22, will revisit their drawing board to face Wazito in midweek.

“It’s a memorable feeling scoring in such a big game to win the title, we’ve had a good season thanks to our coaches and the quality in camp,” said match-hero Omondi, winning his second consecutive title since joining Gor from Nzoia Sugar June last year.

Ingwe coach Rodolfo Zapata congratulated Gor, whilst predicting a fruitful future.

“It’s bad for the supporters losing to rivals but they should be proud because we’ve a bright future, we fought till the end, tried different formations in vain,” said the Argentine.

Gor coach Dylan Kerr hailed his second-string side calling upon the first team to replicate the same on Wednesday.

  • Congrats k’Ogalo. I don’t know if these two Gor teams are playing the same pattern lakini muko juu all the same. I’m more than supprised that Gor mayienga MAYIENGA could beat Afc 2nil and even make it look easy. Which means that if it was the other team, Gor MAYIENGA mayienga the score would probably be 4 or 6. But not to take credit from Gor myienga MAYIENGA I think that they too could do a 4nil score. But all I can say is that both teams have reached lethal status stage. Sofapaka was not easy and Afc too came with adrenalin but alas none of them could beat the Gor that turned up. Mahia is now travelling with shadow that is even more lethal. Correction Mahia is now sending his shadow….
I think sasa mimi pia niko confused with these two teams…. or is one or is it one team pretending to be two or is it one team that is dividing itself into two without the opponents knowledge.
Congrats to Kerr, congrats to the Gor I know, congrats to the Gor that turned up.

The last time Gor Mahia did a double over Efusi in the League was 1976 when we won the League unbeaten. Thanks a lot Coach DK and the entire technical bench. You have attained Legendary Status in this Club. Thanks to the Players and the fans that have never tired from traveling far and wide to support Gor Mahia. We are elated beyond description and give Glory and Honor God the Almighty who has seen us through very difficult and trying times. DK is a master tactician and I will be able to give my full analysis of the season on Wednesday the 29/8/2018. The preview is: Lawrence Juma, Bernard Ondiek and the entire backline for today’s match deserves a part on their backs for earning a direct place in the first eleven. Thank you Fredrick Odhiambo for easing our worries on the goalkeeping department. We now need to bring in another Penalty Saving specialist in the name of Philip Odhiambo formerly of Wazito FC and now of Nakumat FC. Onguso is actually a very good left back and the coach needs to trust him more. Thanks and see you on Wednesday.

Yes great man. The boys confirmed yesterday that Efusi is a ‘she’. Now another ‘she’ is waiting in Algeria.
They also had a league match yesterday from 7.30 – 9.00 p.m. They were playing away to NA Hussein Dey and managed to win by one goal which came in the first half.

Look at their performance you will realize that they are struggling to find the back of the net: 0-0 against GM, 2-1 and 1-1 against Rayon and then lost 1-2 to Yanga and won 1-0 yesterday. They are therefore beatable. Our boys can beat them team in Algeria. We just need three quick fire goals early in the game and then leave Fredrick Odhiambo to do the rest.

  • This win was made possible in the absence of Boniface Oluoch, Shaaban Odhoji, Harun Shakava, Joash Onyango, Philemon Otieno, Ernest Wendo, Humphrey Mieno, Francis Kahata, George Odhiambo, Jacques Tuyisenge, Ephraim Guikan and Francis Mustapha. All those have been preserved for the USM Algiers game. I have proof beyond doubt that Kerr should include Frederick Odhiambo as a first choice goalkeeper when the team travels to Algeria. Without him, that game would have ended in a draw.
We also thank the likes of Isuza and Orotomal for showing mediocrity in front of goal with their feeble shots getting straight into Fredrick’s hands. Mukangula brought some life back to Ingwe in the second half but the rest of his teammates had placed their bets on a loss so nothing much came through. I liked the showmanship in second half which Ingwe also tried, not understanding that they were already two goals late.
Karim’s reaction to Orotomal’s foul was unwarranted and a red card would have been awarded had the centre referee seen it. How do you look right, left and centre then slap your opponent’s face then run away feeling innocent?
This team should now be fielded for the remaining KPL games since we have nothing serious to chase apart from Tuyisenge’s golden boot dream and minor accolades.
Focus now shifts to the money-laden African scene and GoTV. Algiers here we come. The trademark of a big team is to quickly shift focus to bigger aims when ordinary achievements have been realized.
    Those were my observations.
    Erourukamano.

@jambitatiny, this match too emotional and Karim could have realized later that he showed unsportmanship. The same was down by the thug Shittu Abdalla on Gor Mahia players. In such emotive matches, referees sometimes have to ignore such illegal acts of players.

I have a big issue with local fans, yesterday Ingwe fans spoilt seats that have cost the stadia management board lots of money to fix. This destruction was really uncalled for as clubs will be penalized heavily. Why can’t local fans learns that infrastructure in the stadium do cost lots of money and these infrastructure are for fans to use and enjoy. It is just like in your house you go and destroy everything including the chairs, sufuria, plates, beds, clothes etc that you will need their services after one minutes or so when your full mind is back. For sure how long will our local fans learn to be both winners and losers as there is always next time.

Yesterday Ingwe fans were responsible for the destruction of the chairs or seats which are meant for them to enjoy while supporting their beloved team.

On a point of correction the aggressor was Isaac Oduro shown in the picture above on this article and not Alex Orotomal. He is an indisciplined ghanaian leftback import at the den who has a very unruly character whenever featuring in derbies. Case in point is how he tried harrasing Lawrence Juma off the field when he was being subbed by pushing and shoving him in the full glare of the ref and wanting to fight Wafula who tried restraining him. He gets over excited and frustrated during derbies doing all sorts of mischief to gain admiration from ingwe fans like that late malicious off the pitch tackle he wanted to cripple Karim with…

  • Let me thank the team for having one of the best runs this season. Going into the next season, I think the bench need to really address the weakness in our defence. Though we are leading the log with an impressive difference, you realise that we conceded more goals than the second placed team.
There is a time our strikers were not utilising there chances and we were really mad at them. That seemed to have worked miracles and the problem seems to have shifted to the back line.
It’s my hope that after we are done with everything, a proper analysis of our performance will be done with an aim of strategizing for next season.

We conceded more because of Odhoji.if you compare the number of goals he conceded with the number of goals conceded by Boniface, you will agree with me. I do not see anything wrong with this team a part from Odhoji as a goalkeeper, the rest of the players at good and I hope we shall only release Odhoji and bring on board the young goalkeeper from chemelil.

Leopards fans really behaved badly when we were just getting normalcy in our soccer. As Gor we have been there, seen it and done it. The big question is whether we are beyond what ingwe did. I say a BIG No.In our midst we still have some airheads and i think the good results are forcing us to ‘behave’. While ingwe was in a self-destruct mode on Sato why were some of our fans thinking that it was their duty to ‘discipline- them?. For that reason we carry that small percentage of guilt and we willnot walk away free from Sports Kenya fine. After the game some of the Gor fans were even molesting very innocent ingwe fans ‘mourning’ the loss on their way home. That was not in order. As we condemn ingwe for the Chaos what have we as Gor put in place to deter that? Meanwhile i wish the team the best on Wednesday

Kenya’s Gor Mahia are expected to land in Algiers, Algeria this afternoon. The team could not find a connecting flight to Algiers and spent the night in Morocco yesterday.

The team only received 21 tickets, thus travelling without their team doctor and physiotherapist. Team manager Jolawi Obondo said the communication they got from State House was that the air tickets prices were higher than expected prompting the government to purchase only 21 out of the 30 promised..
Only 17 players travelled alongside head coach Dylan Kerr, his assistant Zedekiah Otieno, team manager Jolawi Obondo and club CEO Lordvick Aduda.

Gor Mahia need to win the match to be assured of one of the last eight slots.

The race for the quarters slot is wide open, the Kenyan giant’s fate hanging in the balance owing to the fact that the head-to- head rule will be the tie breaker with Rayon Sports having an advantage over them. This mathematically means Gor Mahia must beat USM Alger or draw in order to progress.

The inclusion of third choice goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo is a big boost for Gor Mahia. Odhiambo has been included in the team alongside the towering and fully recovered Burundian defender Karim Nzigyimana who makes a comeback after a long break due to injury.

The football mad nation is seemingly awaiting the arrival of the Kenyan giants and football fans could be seen as early as yesterday waving the Algerian flag in the street of Algiers with some dressed in USMA outfit, an indication that Gor Mahia will have a hill to climb in this one.

Upon the mention of Kenyan citizenship at Algiers International Airport, an official was just curious to know whether Gor Mahia had arrived, a sign that the match is eagerly awaited. The match kicks off tomorrow at 2pm Algerian time(4pm in Kenya).

  • @ BB, Just like world cup, head-to- head rule will NOT apply in our case, Rayon have to beat Yanga by at least 4 goals to be assured of a slot whilst Kogallo will be safe with a draw, a loss will complicate matters as you can never be sure which rule CAF will apply – Head to Head or Goal Difference.

Paying attention to what the Algerians do is a sign of cowardice. Never pay attention to the devil. Algeria, read n.Africa and w.Africa in general are known hostile grounds. It starts right at the airport until the last whistle. Do not pay attention to the gimmicks. The only problem is that the ref is from w.Africa. west n north support each other coz of their dominance in caf football. This is a H.Hayatou thing and it might take time to get rid of. But apart from ref the game is open, wether being played in the desert sand or in a swimming pool. Do not show fear and avoid confronting the ref or giving fouls in 18yrds. He will gladly give a penalty.

Kindly take note of CAF rules . A draw is not in favor of Gor if Rayon beats Yanga. In that scenario Got will be tossed out because of CAF rules that were put in before the tournament and have not been updated in line to the recent world cup rules. For have only one mission to win and win only. A draw favors the Algerians and the Rwandese. Thanks to the loss on Nairobi.

Dinga is quite right on what Gor Mahia should do out there in Algeria. The whole world knows of the intimidation and frustration that Arabs mete on visiting opponents and it remains just that: intimidation. At the end of the day the match will be played and then Gor Mahia will fly back home. If the intimidation turns ugly and leads to bodily harm then I believe FIFA and CAF have laws to address such, but then what more honour would a player wish for than to sustain bodily harm in the name of K’Ogalo! The Arabs just intimidate; they don’t harm, they don’t kill. Gor Mahia should by now be well prepared to accommodate all that intimidation.

They must not pay attention to any side shows, but keep focus on their mission objective. We know the odds are high, but then we have been in such situations before:

    1. They took a flight at 4 a.m.
    2. Travelled the whole day.
    3. Didn’t have anywhere to sleep come evening.
    4. Stayed the whole night in a cold airport.
    5. Arrived in their final destination the following afternoon.
    6. Didn’t have enough time to rest before going to feel the pitch.
    7. Have to play in the desert heat.
    8. The match referees from West Africa.

They should take comfort that things cannot get worse than this. The worst that possibly could happen already happened in Nairobi against Rayon Sports. With such comfort, they should therefore be under to unnecessary pressure, but play with only that game in their mind.

    • In Cairo ’86 it took the referee to save Zamalek from an imminent Gor beating. In ’87 The Gor squad cared less of what the Tunisians threw at them. Tunisia knew they could not beat Gor so resorted to the most weird tactics ever seen in football. It was so bad in one instance Isaiah Omondi chased a Esperance player in the pitch with the intention to kill. Tactics included eye gorging as P.Dawo would testify.
But the ’86 Gor team reacted and got a ban. Do not over react to these petty field issues.
The Arabs tend to play the ref, my advice ignore, ignore ignore. The more harassment you get shows the level of fear your opponent has for you. When they know you do not pose a threat then they treat you very nicely. USM fears Gor so be ready for everything. But remebember this… they fear you and that’s your advantage.
