Haroun Shakava and Ali Abondo scored a goal in each half to enable the Kenyan Premier League champions keep their place at the top of the log

Gor Mahia maintained their unbeaten run with a deserved 2-0 win over Thika United at Kasarani on Monday.

Haroun Shakava and Ali Abondo scored a goal in each half to enable the Kenyan Premier League champions keep their place at the top of the log on 36 points.

Apart from Jackson Macharia being denied a genuine goal which was ruled off-side, Thika United will have nothing much to complain about in a first half dominated by their opponents.

Gor Mahia controlled proceedings for the most part and were rewarded when Haroun Shakava found the back of the net in the 22nd minute with a brilliant header that beat Thika United goalkeeper Levi Opiyo all the way. K’Ogalo were dominant in an action packed second half where they clearly dominated and were just unlucky not to get a goal within the quarter hour.

First Karim Nizigiyimana won a free-kick just outside the Thika United box but he placed it too low to be of benefit to anyone. Then Meddie Kagere beat Thika United defender Vincent Nyaberi to the ball and chipped the ball over Thika United goalkeeper but Collins Okumu headed out the danger.

Kagere was in the middle of action again in the 50th minute with the Rwandese once again denied by Thika United goalkeeper Levi Opiyo. Michael Olunga was then denied by Thika United goalkeeper, who put out the ball for Gor Mahia’s first corner of the second half.

The hosts were only able to get back into the match in the 55th minute but had to be content with a corner. But no sooner had that happened than Thika United were forced into the offensive and it had to take some great piece of play for Collins Okumu to deny Michael Olunga.

Then Wycliff Opondo and Simon Mbugua were both cautioned. This happened after Kennedy Otieno had come close to equalise for the visitors but his effort went wide. Ali Abondo’s thunderous shot in the 65th minute should have counted and it forced Thika United custodian to work over time to keep out the ball.

As Thika United wasted their chances, they were duly punished with an 82nd minute goal from a well struck free-kick by Ali Abondo.

    Tim Brett oh TIm Bryett!

For Tim Bryett it was a case of choosing between money (stadium entry collections) or the box (the three points). Being inexperienced and absurdly naive he chose the box which he knew very well he could not get. He chose to play the match at 6 pm in Kasarani, to limit the number of the vociferous Gor Mahia fans, thinking that that would be a match-winning strategy. Poor Tim has now missed both the money and the box.

Perhaps if this Bryett man had spent more time training than talking the win could have been restricted to more honourable 1- 0 than the 2- 0 drubbing. Poor Tim. I bet he is now in denial and left with loads of regrets.

How, may I ask, does a man double up as both team coach and team meteorologist? In deed the meteorology bit got so much into his head that he made the poor Thika lads train in heavy rain on Sunday evening since “those are the very same conditions that would exist on Monday evening against Gor Mahia!” On this too he failed as both coach and weatherman. Little did he know that Mahia was watching and Mahia has better supernatural knowledge and say on such things like the weather . Go slowly next time, young Tim Bryett.

That Goal.com reporter is rather lopsided in his reporting. Between the Thika ‘goal’ and Meddie Kagere’s disallowed goal, which one really qualifies to be described as a genuine goal?

    • Even Chiko Lawi with his member of PLAYBACK could not talk about how Olunga was fouled in the D area with Okumu’s Boots on Olunga’s face but if it would beem that it was GM player would play in that manner that would have been the main Topic on Chiko Lawi’s PLAYBACK. Jacob,Salim and Gilberd you shuold rate all players equaly, last week Walusimbi should been given a RED CARD. That injury Okumu caused on Olunga because of high Boot the four of didn’t see it really?

    • Compresser, I suported you on Abondo passes, yes he is top Scorer but sometime he should weighed the shoot if Olunga or Meddie pass the Ball to you itsn’t amust that you must shoot see if you are in position to Score. Both you and Olunga you waist a lot of Shooting most of them you beat Goal-keeper with the Ball.I must also blaim the Tecnical Bench because the mistake aplayer make in Match A the mistake on Match B and even Match C. I can remember the time of Len Julian when Abbas Khamis Magongo (the late) was reccruited in GM he could not score even in Goal mouth but Late Len coached him that Magongo cuold score even outside eighteen Yard. Guys pull up your soacks!!

      • I agree with you on this. Too many passes do not reach their targets and some times shooting when not prepared. My confidence is that the coach sees these and am sure they are working on them.

  • Thanks to God for the sweet victory. Good job the entire GORMAHONO family. The Thika United coach has been very talkative before the match and on the other side Nutall was busy preparing the team to collect maximum points and it worked for him. To teams coaches, before the encounter with Gor just concentrate on preparing your boys sychologically to handle the defeat awaiting them.’Tusker wabiro’.God bless Kogallo!
