Gor Mahia CECAFA Squad presented with glorious chance

Players applaud fans before the derby. Left to Right: Kizito, Musa Mohamed, Jerim Onyango, Patrick Oboya

There were no major surprises when Gor Mahia named the squad that will do duty at the CECAFA club cup. All the key players were named in the squad published in the Nation.

Some second tier players have been surprisingly left out including Camerounian Simon Pierre who scored a crucial goal against Nakuru All Stars recently. Also missing is another big name: George Odhiambo “Blackberry”.  Although many will have difficulty coming to terms with the fact that the former fan favourite is now a second tier player. What Blackberry needs most now is playing time to regain his confidence. Form is temporary but class is permanent.

On the technical bench, Bobby Ogolla was not named likely because he has not fully recovered. His vast experience would have been useful given that he has played in this tournament at least five times and was in all the Gor Mahia squads that won the CECAFA club cup (1980, 1981 and 1985).

Indeed Bobby was a legend all over the CECAFA region and any Ugandan, Tanzanian, Zambian or Malawian knew Bobby. In fact I have met many Tanzanians to this day who still remember Bobby’s exploits on the CECAFA stage.

On the other hand, the good news is that all the key players are available and seemingly injury free. Its a glorious opportunity for Kogalo to win a tournament they last won 29 years ago.

It is also a glorious chance for these players to showcase their skills and gain regional glory and fame.

Patrick Oboya who has been unfit and out of shape often is now slowly working his way back to shape. This tournament provides a platform for him to accomplish his stated goal of returning to the national team.

For Timothy Otieno, its a chance to build on his fast rising reputation that has seen him named to the national team rapidly.

Goalkeepers: Jerim Onyango, David Juma, Joel Bataro. Defenders : Godfrey Walusimbi, Kevin Oluoch, Musa Mohamed, Haron Shakava, Kennedy Opiyo, David Owino, Charles Bruno.

Midfielders: Joseph Kariuki, Baba Kizito, Eric Ochieng, Collins Okoth, Simon Mburu, Daniel Onyango, Timothy Otieno.

Strikers; Dan Sserunkuma, Patrick Oboya, Arthur Ssemazi.

Technical bench: Bobby Williamson (head coach), Frank Ouma (team manager), Iddi Salim (goalkeeper trainer), Patrick Opiyo (team doctor).

Head of delegation: John Pesa.

Unless there is something really wrong someone should let supporters know the fates of Blackberry and Emuge.

  • It’s all clear comrades…..This are the 17 outfield players I have been talking about………… Now we can all see the players who have deserted gor mahia !!!!!

Let’s wish them well and they don’t come back with injuries as we are depleted as it is.

I think the squad is rather ok, Emuge is injured and needs medical attention lets hope our chase insurance will take over the issue, on Blackberry is out of form needs more playing time. Guys lets support the team fully and always think positively.
Goal keeper Jerry should wake-up and better know football now is global? no hiding place for those flimpsy mistakes.
Executive should stop this habbit always crying babies? let them take the challenge

  • I hope Bobby will adopt the more deffencive approach in this tournament bcos the more open sysrem that we’ve been using is not working. I believ that when we played efusi we wud have changed to 3 5 2 after going ahead 2-1. The system of 4 4 2 or 4 3 3 normaly exposes us as was evident when we played efusi in both legs & also when we played Esperence in tunisia. The system of 3 5 2 that we used after loosing to Bandari made Gor went 6 matches winning with 5 clean sheet & conceeded only 1 goal by Jerry .

  • i cant agree more with @michael, i have said exactly that before, in-fact the technical bench let us down after taking that lead against efusi, they are as responsible as jerry was, but thats water under the bridge.wish you all the best

@Jakoyo, there is always a limit on the number of players for a tournament and it ranges from 28 to 23. The players missing are the likes of Mutiso, Emuge , Kopany, Pierre, Angelo and we all know that some are injured while for the others we all know that even locally they have not been used.
I see no need for panicking.
For Mapinduzi cup in Zanzibar KCCA hsd a squad of 16 but won the cup.
On the more defensive pattern are we not the same people who complained?

This tournament will not be easy. Remember that Efusi went to the lesser Mapinduzi cup and were walloped. Kogalo needs to beware. Williamson I hope he is doing his homework.

based on their few appearances this season methinks Blackberry should have made the cut ahead of Ssemazzi and Chimaroke ahead of Oluoch. My own personal opinion. hopefully the coach is right.he knows best.As he should!!!

Meanwhile I hope the EC will lobby to have our match against Ulinzi postponed. Our UG trio in Madagascar will not br able yo make it in good time. Thr team slso needs to focus on the CECAFA matches

  • @Omondi because we have the USA-ENGLAND-SOUTH AFRICA complex haha. We feel we are heads & shoulders above all in the region in everything- in this case football.
But then again we have most CECAFA club titles- Gor, AFC, Tusker.
