Gor Mahia collects ’17 points’ in Nyanza tour

Gor Mahia completed their Nyanza tour in style by collecting ’17 points’ out of possible 21 after drubbing Mbita Combined 4-0 with goals scored by new signings Kevin Omondi (Lang’ata High School)(2), Duncan Makori (2). The tour which started on 17th Dec with a match against Ndhiwa Combined where Dan Makori scored the solitary goal which separated the two teams before moving to Homa Bay the following day. This match ended in 2-2 score line with Duncan Owiti scoring the first goal after just 40 seconds of play, Elisha Ochieno added the second one. Saturday 19th was the peak of tour when Gor Mahia locked horns with hard tackling Express FC of Uganda. It was not until late in the first half when Duncan Owiti raced on the touch line  before releasing a cross which George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo tapped home. Odhiambo later became a culprit of wasted chances including one occasion when he rounded every body including the goalkeeper before placing the ball wide. In fact scoring was even easier than tapping the ball out. He was so near the goal that nobody believed that the ball went wide. Kisumu East MP Olago Aluoch was heard shouting that the net must have been porous!.
After this gruelling match, the next stage was Siaya municipal stadium where the young charges ran riot by routing Siaya Combined 8-0 with goals from George Odhiambo (3), Dan Makori (2), John Kiplang’at (Karabok Secondary School)(2) and Brian Osumba (1). Odhiambo scored his hat trick in the first 30 minutes. The locals fans requested for his early replacement so that they could ‘enjoy the match’ because he was a neusance to the local defenders. This request was granted though the substitute Makori was even more dangerous than Odhiambo himself. In his introduction Makori scored a goal which can be equated to the goal scored by one (I can’t remember the name) of Algerian National team player when they eliminated Egypt in race to South Africa in Sudan. It was simply the goal of the whole trip.
Coach Gideon Ochieng
The team then got their match in the morning of 21st Dec when they met with skilfull and determined Gem Combined which stretched them to 0-0 score line. In the afternoon of the same day they dismissed Bondo United 3-0 with goals from Kevin Omondi, Dan Makori and John Kiplang’at. All the three goals were scored in the last ten minutes of play before crossing in ferry to Mbita point where the tour ended.
After Mbita match the team crossed ferry again back to Gem where the team was feted and players awarded with George Odhiambo emerging as the best player of the year and Julius Owino as his runners up. Francis Akang’o was voted the best defender of the year with Ibrahim Kitawi clinching the best midfielder of year slot. George Odhiambo again won top scorers award seconded by Duncan Owiti. Samson Ogutu who has been the team Physio since 1973 was honoured by the Chairman as the most long serving person in Gor Mahia family. New signing Kevin Omondi was voted as the most promising player while Dan Makori (5 goals) received ‘top scorer of the trip’ award with Kevin Omondi and George Odhiambo sharing the second spot with 4 goals a piece. The players are now on holiday untill second week of January when they will resume training in aticiaption of the next season and a possible friendly match organized by Soccer International against either a club from South Africa or Sports Club Villa in late January.
