Gor Mahia drops 7 players
There are 7 players whose contracts have run out and will not be renewed. Club Chief Executive Officer Lordvic Aduda told Supersport.com that the contracts of Patrick Oboya, Innocent Mutiso, Charles Bruno, Kennedy Ayong, Ian Niva, Simon Mburu and Angelo Okumu.
Patrick Oboya joined Gor Mahia in early 2013. He showed flashes of brilliance in 2013 despite injuries. But in 2014, he hardly featured having been plagued by a nagging injury. Innocent Mutiso has also played well when fielded but has also missed large swathes of the season with injuries.
CEO Ludovick Aduda stated that the club is in contact with coach Frank Nuttall. “The coach has told us who to be released, loaned out and who to be retained. He also had areas he wanted beefed up,” said Aduda.
Aduda went on to explain why the players were released. “The players we have released were not adding much value to the team because they were not playing much. Others have shown interest elswhere like Oboya who has been out of the country on trials. Mburu is wanted by Rangers so we have put so many things in consideration before making the decision,” added Aduda.
It is also a fact that Gor Mahia is broke and cannot afford to pay players who miss large swathes of the season with injuries.
Other players who may add value to the team at a later date will be sent on loan. Joel Bataro who joins Shabana, midfielder Daniel Onyango who is headed to Sony Sugar and Joseph kariuki who will be loaned to Kakamega Homeboyz.
Bataro is young and promising. But in 2014 he could not even feature when Jerim Onyango was absent as coach Bobby Williamson preferred David Juma. And with Boniface Oluoch signed, Bataro will be further down in the pecking order. Daniel Onyango and Joseph Kariuki have both shown promise.
Charles Bruno played decent when fielded. But with the team signing Dirkir Glay and already having Israel Emuge and Haron Shakava, Bruno would most likely not see playing time.
Glay who has been playing for Thika United explained why he chose Gor Mahia. “I did not just leave Thika United for Gor Mahia; I came here for a challenge. I knew here I will get a bigger challenge as a player because this is a club preparing for continental duty and I want to be of help to the team in the Champions League. It will be my first taste of continental action and I am happy to be here and ready for the challenge, he said to futaa.com
As much as it’s painful to let the players go it’s the most natural thing to do and has nothing to do with the financial status of the club. Even Madrid would do the same thing. Let’s go for a max 20 experienced players and 5 or so youthful players
It is about performance and value addition to the club. We wish the dropped players well in their future endeavors and look forward to seeing them in other clubs. We thank you for your services.

How can Patrick Oboya and Mutiso be dropped but Semanzi the harmless striker is retained?Did you also apply the scientific method or what basis were you using?
@ oburu Semazzi joined Gor in June 2014 for a period of one and a half years. You can’t just drop him unless you terminate the contract by following the correct procedure.
How I wish we could let the EC and CEO do their job. Criticizing all the moves from the comfort of our christmas festivities will not help much. We need solutions both financial and material to carry out good recruitment. Some are even questioning why Abondo has been called back. Isn’t it the same thing we said when Gattusso was also recalled. Didn’t he prove us wrong? It’s sad to lose the talent of Oboya and Wiper but then the team needs instant results and can only do with a lean squad considering the financial constraints
The technical bench has released the very players I had recommended with exception of David Juma still being retained. That brings the total number of players out of the club to 12. I am glad that our ongoing recruitment exercise seems geared towards filling the positions left vacant by transfers, loans and release of players. I want to appeal to the coaches to begin to assign shirt numbers to players based on their seniority, industry, discipline, commitment and consider individual preference only on a need be basis. Its sometimes very painful to watch some of the famous shirt numbers worn in the past by The Legends of this Club handed over to novices. We must begin to respect our legends by respecting their shirt numbers. Shirt number 7 is considered sacred by both Manchester United and Liverpool because of the legendary status of those that have won this shirt in the past. Think of David Beckham , Cristiano Ronaldo Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keagan, Luis Suarez. Shirt no 7 has been won by none other than Peter Dawo while Austin Oduor wore no 6. Can you imagine Wanyonyi was once handed the famous number 7 shirt!!! How!
