Gor Mahia edge AFC Leopards 2-1

Gor Mahia continued their march towards the 2018 Kenya Premier League in grand style, by beating arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-1. The goals came from Jacque Tuyisenge in the 26th minute and George Odhiambo Blackberry in the 53rd minute. With Tuyisenge in fine scoring form, the club will certainly not miss his compatriot who departed for Tanzania. AFC Leopards scored in the 45th minute via Whyvonne Isuza.

Tuyisenge’s goal was the result of sheer hustle. He pressured an AFC defender who in turn hurriedly turned the ball back to his goalkeeper. Tuyisenge chased down the ball. As he and the AFC keeper were in a foot race. Tuyisenge reached the ball first and planted it in the net.

Blackberry’s goal came via a well weighted cross from Francis Kahata. Blackberry who was at the far post, met the ball with a spectacular volley that left the AFC keeper with no chance.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Runaway SportPesa Premier League leaders Gor Mahia on Sunday extended their dominance over eternal rivals AFC Leopards with a 2-1 win in the Mashemeji derby at Kasarani.

George “Blackberry” Odhiambo struck the winner in the second half after Whyvonne Isuza had cancelled out Jacques Tuyisenge’s opener for Gor Mahia to give the 16-time champions their 16th win of the campaign.

Leopards got the ball rolling in this 84th meeting between the two nemesis after a minute of silence in honour of the mother of former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech, Mary Aumba Oliech, who died on Friday after a long battle with cancer.

Centre referee Israel Mpaima was forced to flash the first yellow card just five minutes into the match after Gor skipper Harun Shakava hacked down Jaffari Owiti on the left flank. Shakava, scorer of the lone goal in the two team’s last meeting in May in the Hull City Challenge, almost broke the deadlock in the 17th minute but his header from a George Odhiambo’s cross hit the roof of the net.

Five minutes later, Gor, who had until this point dominated proceedings, were 1-0 up through Tuyisenge after a comical blunder from Leopards defender Salim Abdallah. The Rwandan striker intercepted Salim’s short back pass before beating goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade for the opener, in front a Leopards crowd in disbelief.

Tuyisenge thought he had doubled the lead in the 40th minute but his glancing header from Wafula Innocent’s pin-point cross missed the target by a whisker, as Leopards defenders yet again left the Rwandan hit-man unmarked in the area.

Ingwe, looking increasingly vulnerable since going behind, were forced to go forward in search for an equaliser in the dying minutes of the half. Isaac Oduro came close from a freekick which was gathered by Gor goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch – who was restored into the starting line-up after missing their midweek 4-0 win over Yanga in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Isuza then sent the Leopards faithful in the stands into a frenzy with a well taken volley from inside the area deep into the first half’s injury time to ensure the two rivals head for the drinks level.

Dennis Sikhayi took advantage after referee played on after Marvin Omondi was fouled outside the area, floated in a cross that Isuza brilliantly slotted home.

Leopards introduced Nigerian striker Alex Orotumal for Marvin Omondi just before the second half started but it is Gor who found the back of the net yet again after some poor marking by the Leopards defence.

Odhiambo finished off Francis Kahata’s weighted pass from inside the box to restore Gor’s on 54 minutes.

Victory for Gor, their 16th in 20 matches, sends them to 52 points, 12 clear of second-placed Sofapaka and 16 better of Leopards who succumbed to their fifth loss of the season.

“Massive three points and silencing critics, by beating AFC Leopards. People say they didn’t turn up for the party but they kept playing in their own half and we should’ve killed the game early on,” said Gor coach Dylan Kerr.

His opposite number Rodolfo Zapata praised his charges despite the loss.

“We played well, I am proud of my boys because we were unlucky,” he said, before being whisked away in a huff by the club’s stewards who couldn’t allow him take in more questions.

Gor, who are chasing a treble, suffered an injury set back after Tuyisenge limped off shedding tears with 18 minutes to time. Kerr had to give his main striker a pat on the back as he escorted for treatment.

Zapata, looking to salvage a point from the tie, made a double substitution in the 75th minute pulling out Edward Seda and Jaffari Owiti for Eugene Mukhangula and Vincent Oburu respectively. Gor responded by introducing new signing Francis Mustafa for the injured Tuyisenge.

Until the Burundian’s introduction in the 77th minute, Gor had played for about five minutes with 10 men, prompting their fans to hurl objects at the fourth official for “delaying” the change. Despite the late changes, Gor held on to go home with the bragging rights and three points. Their match to an unprecedented 17th league title now clear.

The most interesting outcome is not only the win but that AFC only managed two shots on target with no corner at all.Congrats boys, it is not right to say that Gor has no competitors in kpl coz the players really sweat to get the three points it is never a walk in the park.Keep up the fighting spirit. The new boy Mustafa is yet to gel with teammates fully, he still finds it difficult to anticipate the quick passes from the mid field.

Wololo,Which game were you watching ndungu @musymo.Congrats for the team for the win.Me thinks our passing is too slow, sometimes casual.IF we happen to get a high pressing team I think we would be in trouble. Moreover most of defence passes are square , very dangerous.Otherwise happy for the boys, Good job there is always room for improvement.Who’s the next casualty.Pole sana to that dude who bothering us with AFC will take the league.Mani ohingo ajuoga, ni Obongo.

    • @Level Mind, let me tell you something that derbies are usually like this and AFC came to spoil our game. Look at their rough big man Shittu played rough hit Tuiyisenge, brought down Sammy Onyango but Refereee Mpaima favored AFC on 50/50 balls. Poor officiating as this Shittu should have been given a red card. Same with Issuza with two legs aimed at Wafula.

Our boys played well considering the fact that we have 2 important matches in 10 days time.

Afc coach promised that he was going to teach us a good lesson. Who tought the other a good lesson?
All the same, Afc tried except Kogalo is above them.
They were too rough on us and the ref did not bother.

  • I have Never seen a more physical bad intentioned malicious game like what Afc played today. Abdalla Shitty was fighting and beating up our players both with headbutts and slaps and hand out elbows and blows yet ref saw it fit to wave play on. All 50-50 challenges were called in ingwes favor.I mean its like all match officials were colluding to carry Afc.Waweru the fourth official hates Kerr for having dressed him down few times he was reffing our games that he literally refused to make our sub 10 mins after Tuyisenge got injured while in the same period he did all 3 ingwe subs and rudely sent Mustafa Francis away while giving him the sub card.Kerr had to pick the substitute board and input the jersey numbers himself b4 waweru yielded.Am not happy with Afc today.Congrats our great team for downing those rough wrestlers who came to beat you not play.Hongera Kerr and Players as despite all they tried K’Ogalo SGR crushed them on the Railway without mercy as i had said before We Take No Casualties…

  • Congrats boys, derbies are always difficult.
Today AFC managed to completely curtail our wing play, our boys are not used to central penetration, though Mieno Kahata have the capabilities of doing so.
Yes it was clear, the referee favoured AFC today but it was not their day even with the referee on their side.
Juma Abdallah should try his luck in rugby, he’s too rough for the beautiful game of soccer

If you noticed Guikan & Jausenge mostly are forced to come in the middle to receive the balls .If only we could increase our pace ,I tell you teams would be massacred and am sure Kerr/Zico na mafans would not take responsibility

We need to know there is potential in order to keep going, and while achieving that potential doesn’t necessarily lead to happiness, failing to achieve our perceived potential is the surest path to recrimination. Gor used the tactical lessons from their last game against Yanga to beat the stiff Ingwe opposition.

DK has an incredibly talented squad handing him a myriad selection headaches, and plenty of doubts about how to squeeze maximum capability out of his undoubtedly brilliant players. From Dylan Kerr’s bag of tricks he has been able to boldly make tactical switches as every match may demand.

Matches involving these sides are some of the most captivating and scintillating. Philemon Otieno had a revelatory coming-of-age performance when he was switched to the middle.

Dylan Kerr has managed to turn this collection of enormously talented individuals into a cohesive world-beating team.
After Marcelo’s long-beloved 3-4-3 came so close to spelling redundancy and doom in 2016, Dylan Kerr has swiftly switched to a 4-3-3.

It has worked: the change allowed Gor Mahia to reinforce the fine silk of Francis Kahata, Blackberry, Humphrey Mieno and E. Guikan with the raw steel of Ernest Wendo and Joash Onyango who were rewarded with the place in the starting line-up after the departures of Musa Mohamed and Kenneth Muguna. If Gor Mahia can churn out this eye popping performance week after week, they will surely join the Golden Generation of 1979 and 1987.

Should Gor Mahia earn a place in the finals of a major tournament, their manager may be owed a few apologies from his long-standing doubters. Dylan Kerr has developed a master plan on how to overcome the tyranny of choice.

After using the SPL to dabble with both formations and personnel, he has seemingly settled on what is often described as a 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 but is in fact neither. Kahata – is nominally the left-winger, but in practice plays as third central midfielder alongside Wendo and Humphrey Mieno, allowing left- winger Tuyisenge to join E. Guikan and Blackberry in attack with much greater regularity and potency. This effectively makes it a lopsided 4-3-3 (a formation with decent pedigree in World football: it’s how Brazil won the World Cup in 1962) that has been Dylan Kerr’s best attempt yet at getting the most out of his side.

It is possible that Gor Mahia is destined for greatness this year, and their fate is in their own hands. This year may prove to be the penultimate and most challenging step in achieving redemption, fulfilling potential, and creating a legacy that will last for generations.

The match today was about commitment, passion, endurance and tactics. Dylan Kerr got all this from his players and he crowned it all by out-smatting Zapata tactically in crucial areas. Momanyi has been playing so well recently, but look here: who did we bring in his place today, Joash Onyango!!! The no nonsense Joash. He drove feer into the hearts and legs of the little boys like Jeffery Owiti, Marvin Omondi and even a veteran like Ezekiel Odera chickened out from taking him on. Once that psychological war fare had been won, the rest just fell into place. Efusi could not muster any shot at Goal save for some half- hearted attempts courtesy of the blanket wall erected by Shakava and company. Joash wins lots of headers but today he won all the headers and swept every thing on the floor. The Kasarani pitch was a sight to behold, Prestine and immaculately laid, for football.
Zapata opted for a 4:5:1 and this initially overcrowded us out in the middle. After a slight adjustment to our structure, we had Efusi where we wanted them to be!! Blackberry and Walusimbi identified and isolated Sikhayi and proceeded to torment him the whole afternoon. After that sloppy back- pass by Shittu had been intercepted by Tuyisenge and punishment administered, Efusi were finally caged and the final result was not in doubt.
We continued to dominate every aspect of this game but we failed to add onto our goal. Isaack Oduro abandoned his duty post as a defender and continued to run into dead ends where he was easily out- muscled and dispossessed number without end. Wyvonne Issuza huffed and puffed in the midfield and was really fortunate with his goal. He did slightly better because Wendo the bull was absent. He should have been sent out for a two-footed slide tackle on Innocent Wafula. Edwin Seda is a tidy player but he is not made for the rough and tumble of a national derby. Humphrey is a master passer but he could not express himself fully today as he was charged with the rather burdensome duty of stopping Efusi and then starting play for Gor Mahia. He was an offensive player playing with a mindset of a defensive player. He kept to his job and had it done at the end of the day. Innocent Wafula, our master crosser of the ball had a relatively quiet game today. No surging runs or dribbles in the opposition’s half. He was very good in recovering possession whenever he lost it. The upside of this: He was never caught out, even when he was drafted in the back while Philemon moved central to share the defensive duty with H. Mieno. Philemon brought the momentary dominion Efusi enjoyed in the middle at the beginning of 2nd half to a sudden and crashing halt. Dylan Kerr tinkered with our formation and shiftted him into the middle. The fleet-footed Marvin Omondi and Jeffery Owiti did well in the first half but once their system of fast- breaks were curtailed they lacked any ingenuity to trouble our defence. While our defence remained compact and focused, the opposite can be said of efusi’s!!! They were rudderless, structureless, leaderless and all over the place. Abdallah Shitu reminded me of a brainless wrestler, charging at opponents without a care of caution. He should have been red- carded for deliberately hitting Samuel Onyango on the head. He was unnecessarily too rough on our strikers and depended on brute Force to win tackles and challenges. I lost count of the number of times he literally pushed our players off the ball. Guikan could not match his physicallity every time our little maestro tried to take him on. Kahata’s influence on the match grew gradually and peeked in the 2nd half. His intelligence and off- the ball movement won us the corner which yielded the 2nd and winning goal. He sumptuously lobbed the ball over the entire Efusi defense to find Blackberry at the back post who applied the glorious finish for our 2nd goal. As for Walusimbi, Tuyisenge and Blackberry, the saying that form is temporary and class is permanent, aptly describes their contribution to this club. Tuyisenge scored a goal that requires a poacher’s instincts. It is this ruthless edge that many of the clubs in SPL are missing. Blackberry and Walusimbi combined to give Sikhayi a torrid time the whole afternoon. Our captain continues to lead this team admirably. Despite being cautioned early in the match, he did not pull out of any challenges for fear of getting a 2nd yellow card and eventual dismissal. That is El Capitan for you. Playing for the badge that he loves. He has not lost to Efusi since he became our captain. E. Guikan is a model footballer. He threw his body, his heart and everything at Efusi despite having to do that against Abdallah’Msittu’ and the gang that was out to injure our players. Boniface Oluoch delt very comfortably with all the balls that came his way. His distribution and command of his area was better than any that I have ever watched. Oluoch was Confident and unassuming in this matter. There was very little he could do to stop us from conceeding the Issuza goal.. he was wrong-footed. Thanks to God for this superior performance. You deserved it, and you got it. Go go go Gor Mahia.

    • @Le Pastre, great and in depth analysis indeed. I like the comment of Abdallah’Msittu’ and just wondering why the referee never booked him or send him for early bathe. This guy is not a football player at all but a gang leader which KPL need to do something before he destroys careers of players. Look at the headbutt on the back-head of Tuyisenge, his thuggery action against Samuel Onyango, he was always kicks on Guikan, Kahata and Mieno. The other Ingwe player that also came for unaccomplished mission was Tsuma formerly with Thika United on the second foul on Guikan after the whistle had gone for a foul and high boot on Guikan. Isuza or Lizuza on Innocent Wafula with both two brutal legs high!!!!! Where were the referee and two assistants?

I hope CAF and FIFA were watching these ref and his assistants that almost ruined the career of our players.

They were really hoping that they can win against us but it’s a fact that Gor mahia fc is far much ahead of them. This myth that in Darby’s form doesn’t count I don’t agree with. I did not expect Gor mahia fc to loose to AFC leopards because the quality of players that Gor mahia fc have is much better than those of AFC leopards players.. In fact these AFC leopards players con really be passengers in Gor mahia fc. But this guy abdall shitu should quite football for the good of the game.

Square passes are generally not bad at the back. If you watched this match keenly, you will notice that we did this frequently to draw out Efusi out of position. This was a team that had come to sit deep and use rapid attacks from the wings: Marvin Omondi and Jeffery Owiti were deployed to do this. So Gor Mahia had to recycle possession to draw Efusi out of their structure.

  • Happy , Yes but excited No , I only get excited when we win a 50-50 game , on the flipside I have both sympathy and admiration for the boys , ssympathy bcoz I know of no team in this world that has had to play an average of 2and a half games in a week in a space of 2months , admiration for the fact that despite that punishing schedule , the results have been fantastic , on this Shemeji game , while Afc had a recovery time of at least 192 hours , to train and focus on this game , we had at most 48hrs , with a must win game in midweek , close to 6games in 14days prior to that plus Jet lag to boot , all those disadvantageson our side and all the advantages plus the ref on Efusi’s side , we still managed to destroy them .
For those saying that our game was slow , yes it was , but deliberately and inadvertently so , it all boils down to deliberated Game management courtesy of the frequency we have had to play coupled with am added fact that we still face more of the same in the coming weeks if not months , starting with another inconvinience in mid week against Posta before we FLY out-Again , to Dar against Yanga , then be back for more local inconveniences before FLYING OUT-Again to Everton , then flying back for more inconveniences , Then FLYING BACK-again to Algiers , then back for Rayon and more local inconveniences .
With all this on our plate , I beseech the EC to ensure that whatever happened and eventually boiled over in Dar es Salaam
doesn’t ever happen again bcoz unlike the atmosphere that gets colder the higher you go , we Kogalo fraternity get hotter the higher we go and any mishandling of the players again may this time be handled at a hotter level .
Everything looks up for as this season and its incumbent upon all who love the club to be on their best behaviour moreso the EC.

Ask Kahata and Mieno….Blackberry will respond in kind! Me thinks KPL shoud use video evidence and ban such “obandas” (cane harvesters) like Abdalla Shitu from the good game! Actually I intend to sue Shitu through a private prosecution for intent to maim and murder on the football pitch!
His attack on Samuel Onyango was as low as it gets; while his constant opening of his big mouth hurling unprintable words both in his native mother tongue and swahili at Kogalo’s artists was rudderless! He really is a shame on Kenyan football!
Back to Gor Mahia! humility will carry the day any day! Clueless teams will try and derail the train, tactless officials will try to sabotage the team, but focus, handwork and especially togetherness will reap success.

Fellas, what is the yardstick for the best/good Chairman. You can argue about that till the next season ends. It’s like who is better between Pele and Maradona. Note that previously the players were not pros but employees of Posta, Railways, KQ , GoK etc so the pressure on finances was minimal. On the flipside now the team has sponsor(s) so some money comes in. Also previously the Gvmnt used to provide airtickets for any team representing the country, not the case anymore.
So for those who never saw Gor playing Canon Younde, Djoliba, Bendel etc and the likes of Rufai, George Weah, Kunde etc it will be hard to compare with the current team.
Some will say Leslie Okudo, Some will say Harvinder Singh etc so every Chairman did what they cold do depending on the prevailing circumstances.
In terms of most games won in a season is Kerr over and above Nutall or Loga? Those with the stats can tell us. Currently Gor has played almost 30 games in total yet the season has just passed the hallway stage. We have lost to Azam , Supersport and Esperance

The switching of Philemon to defensive midfield was a masterstroke that Efusi never saw coming. With that single tinkering, Orotomal, Oburu and even Eugene Mkangula were completely pacified.

This man Ker is emerging to be a Master tactician. The match was won simply through brain. Fatigue was really telling on our boys and therefore the team had to take a different approach. With Ker it worked. Yesterday’s was Ker’s first league win over Efusi and that works well for his confidence for future derbies. That match was significant in so many ways and this was indeed affirmed by the impressive crowd that turned up. The game was a re-enactment of Le Batiole Les Malvinas (The Falklands War) of 1982 and Ker just like UK then, emerged victorious. Congratulations coach. Don’t be tired of winning.

Gor Mahia have finally set up a new office, several months after they were kicked out of Nyayo Stadium premises for non-payment of rent.

K’Ogalo were forced to do without a physical office for over 15 months after they were locked out of Nyayo premises in February, 2017.

This was due to accrued arrears totalling to Sh4.6million after the club failed to honour the 2011 lease agreement of Sh85, 000 a month rent.

Gor Mahia, Kenya’s biggest club by the fanbase, however, have found temporary shelter in the CBD after securing a space at the Development House along Moi Avenue.
