Gor Mahia edge Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0

Scorer: Meddie Kagere

A goal by veteran striker Meddie Kagere enabled Gor Mahia to escape with a 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz at Afraha stadium on Saturday. Kagere justified the calls of fans who have been calling for him to be given more playing time when he sublimely finished off an assist from Karim Nizigiyimana.

The Rwandese midfielder wheeled away in celebration, two fingers in the sky signifying his double bundle of joy just 20 minutes after coming on for George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo. He finished off a decent team move, tapping in unmarked from a yard out after being picked up by a Karim Nizigiyimana cross.

The win takes Gor to nine points, two ahead of Bandari and leaders AFC Leopards who will be playing on Sunday in Nakuru and Kisumu respectively.

Gor head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira had been boosted with the return of Rwandese midfielder Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza who tucked in at the centre of the pack alongside Ernest Wendo with Kenneth Muguna playing infront of them.

In defense, the Brazilian coach had taken back Wellington Ochieng into the starting team with Joash Onyango who took his place in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Western Stima missing.

It was a balanced start to the match with Gor having the first opportunity of the match, a 13th minute curling freekick by Godfrey Walusimbi which was tipped over the bar by Homeboyz keeper Mike Wanyika.

Ten minutes later, skipper Eston Esiye’s swirling shot from distance almost caught out Boniface Oluoch in the Gor goal but he managed to scamper the ball over for a corner.

Two minutes later, Oluoch had to pull an important intervention to cut out Wycliffe Ochomo who had been put through by a Stephen Wakyanya through ball.

The Homeboyz bench was up in arms calling for a foul on their striker but referee Andrew Juma heard none of it.

George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo should have taken his side into the lead but he wasted a glorious chance. A well weighted long pass from Wellington Ochieng released Odhiambo on the right with the winger cutting in, but his shot was blocked.

Almost immediately, Jacques Tuyisenge forced a great save off Wanyika with a header at the far post after the Rwandese rise well to meet a Walusimbi cross from the left.

Both sides passed the ball well around the field, but it was Gor who saw more of the possession with Oluoch left only to dictate terms to his backline.

Just before the referee whistled for half time, Mugiraneza rose high at the back post to meet a Walusimbi corner, but the ball went wide.

At the start of the second half, Ferreira hauled off Odhiambo and brought in goal scorer Kagere with Mugiraneza also coming off for Francis Kahata.

Kagere made his mark known 20 minutes later and K’Ogalo should have gone two up seven minutes later but were denied. From a Walusimbi free kick, Tuyisenge headed the ball into play from the back post but Kahata’s effort was blocked.

The ball fell graciously on defender Harun Shakava, but the ball came off the upright.

With 10 minutes to go, Muguna came close to his second goal in Gor colors but he wasted an opportunity after failing to shoot on his weaker left foot when he broke into the box allowing the Homeboyz defense to race back and clear.

  • A hard fought win. Thanks to God. Tuyisenge needs to score, so happy to see Meddie show him how it is done. The many backpasses make miss the ‘patia Sserunkuma’brand of soccer.

  • Thanks to the playing unit and TB for the win though with a slight margin. We can trust our true and tested feet of Kagere for the goals. The absence of Timo was a blessing in disguise.

  • Slim 1 nil margin that I usually don’t advocate for since they are never safe nor convincing but all in all we take it positively with a disclaimer that the striking department is still way below par and needs to be sharpened.Congrats to the Players and TB for taking us back to the summit log.

  • Phew, even the slimest of wins is welcome. Is there a trend to Ze Maria results since mid last year. “2 wins then and loss or several draws”. Anyway am not holding him/TB or players to high standards anymore not with the jua kali (no offense to club legend Tobias Ochola) way bloated EC operates. Waiting for the gate collections figure/ stories.

When we lose we are up in arms and the wail here registers 50+ comments. When we lose we take it for granted and keep off.
Still not sure why we hit on the team by winning by a solitary goal yet the current league now is one of the toughest so far. All teams are getting it hard to win consistently and our Gor is no exception.
Just to pre-empt our thoughts. With Crown beverages funds gone, Supersport grant gone, gate collections disappearing then we need to start thinking of the worse-case scenarios. Will we be able to comfortably enumerate or expensively assembled staff? Or go-slows will be the order of the day because winning bonuses not paid?

  • Guys I have a reason to ask what profitteth Western Stima to beat Gor Mahia then lose to Posta Rangers. Am happy for the fact that they are second bottom on the log. It’s gonna involve a rocket scientist to convince me that Brewkenge are title contenders this season.

    • Am also buffled, i think there’s more to it than ati opposing teams give 100% against K’galo then flopping in their next game, our opponents should be tested for “performance enhancing drugs” before our games. Regarding 50+ comments:The news is when man bites dog not when dog bites man. In GMFC what we need is trophies moreso regional and continental, local trophies should be automatic. I think we are topping table now, Ze Maria should break his jinx 2 wins then a loss or +3 draws, that’s if EC doesn’t complicate matters.

  • From the onset I wish to congratulate the team for their victory over Homeboyz the margin of victory notwithstanding but that’s as far as my celebration goes and my concern is whether the issue that consistently cause upheavals in the club have been permanently sorted or what we r seeing is but a first aid job and I want to take this further by stressing that the crisis we constantly witness are the result of deliberate measures by one who benefits from it but where the players be the losers bcoz its a matter of fact that there is no entity I know whose intentions is to thrive that can do so in a conflict situation and another fact I know that if AR intends this nonsense to stop it would stop immediately , proof of this is how he has seamlessly structurally and professionally his companies his many private companies where everybody knows his/her roles and boundaries , records are well kept and payments professionally done and so as we celebrate the win we should not lose sight of the fact that we are much better than what we see both on and off the field and something must change.

  • On a different note here is a Point to ponder.Zdravko Logarisic has been fired by Asante Kotoko mgt after just 11 games in which he registered 5 wins 4 losses and 2 draws.Call it a team with high expectations and compare that to forgiving kogalo then you know we are patient

Osiepna, it’s called value for money. Strict performance contracting not the excuses ati it will be expensive for the club to let him go coz FIFA will penalise us.
Jakoyo the saddest thing, notwithstanding the EC’s greed, is that clubs, GMFC included, will lose the SS grant and money for matches aired live.

      • Oduor12 here at our beloved kogalo even after 8 stalemate draws and 2 losses it is taboo to fathom a change of guard as long as AR LIKES the coach but on the contrary even after 28 wins and 2 draws in a whole season notwithstanding if Hayatou elder brother doesn’t like you pack up and go.GM’s priorities as a club are very skewed in nature methinks owing to EC inept mgt
