Gor Mahia edge Mathare United

Goalscorer: Dan Sserunkuma

Kenyan Premier League [KPL] defending champions Gor Mahia have maintained their bright start to the season with a hard fought 1-0 victory over 2008 champions Mathare United on Sunday afternoon at the Machakos Stadium.

Ugandan international Dan Sserunkuma secured the three points for K’ogalo in the second half from a brilliant counter attack that Mathare defenders could not handle in time.
Gor Mahia however enjoyed an upper hand in possession and chances on goal through they did not manage to convert any of them amidst a watertight defence that Mathare maintained.
K’ogalo however went for the kill first through Ugandan national Dan Sserunkuma in the 3rd minute but the resultant Wanyonyi corner went wide for a goakick.
Mathare responded quickly through Daniel Mwaura who was brought down by Njuguna but the resultant freekick was well stopped by Jerim Onyango in the Gor Mahia goal.
Shaban Kenga was brilliant as well in the first half for Gor Mahia with several of his attempts being handles appropriately by Odhiambo on the Mathare United goal.
Zzinda Hussein and Vincent Odongo was great on the Mathare side but his efforts were countered by an equally determined Gor Mahia defence.
Gor Mahia snatched a minute after restart after Wanyonyi managed to sneak into the Mathare defence area and unleashed a shot that beat keeper Peter Odhiambo.
The match again bounced back into an end to end game with Hussein Zzinda unleashed a thunderbolt which Jerim saved. Sserunkuma also hit at them almost immediately with a header on the other end but it rolled wide a few inches.
Wanyonyi came calling on several occasions  but Mathare had already learnt the hard way after the first goal and would not make another mistake in the match.
Sserunkuma and Oboya had a chance to stretch the lead in the dying minutes of the match but the latter’s shot could not find the back of the net rolling a few inches wide.

  • Well flowing entertaining football, kudos to the team. i shall repeat that with entertaining football, goals will keep on coming even from the most unlikely sources, therefore we understand the importance of ‘brand’.
Yesterday the guy seated next to me happens to be Kao, and he seemed to enjoy the match till he asked me if truly GOR is a Kenyan club, saying how attractive our game is! . . .Me being the Luo, I told him that the best is yet to come out of the mboys!
We had fun, hope you did enjoy too

Congrats. Mathare has really been a hard nut to crack for Gor Mahia but with good preparations, mental strength and the right strategy/formation, the sky is the lowest limit. Though too early to start celebrating, the last 4 matches have really encouraged me – both continental (2 matches) and Tusker premier league (2 matches).

It is my prayer we will continue with that winning attitude even for this weekend’s match against the Tunisian side.

Achabo….Gor v Tusker 02/03/14 will not happen because of our continental match versus Esperance of Tunisia.

While am happy that we have notched up important wins in all our competitive matches so far,i have a major concern.

Lately,we have been over reliant on Ssrenkumas prowess in front of goal. When he is completely marked out of the game,we struggle and we have nobody to step up and take the goal scoring duties.

In my personal opinion, this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency if we really hope to beat teams….starting this weekend against esperance!!!

As mentioned by @Oswozo we need the goals to be spread between BB, Rama, Kenga, Obwoge and the rest. Though it cannot be forced it will surely happen.
Congrats boys for the good game

I plead with coach to forgive Walusimbi for the mistake he did yesterday. This is the time we need him him most and if he is panished, may affect us. Forgeting is natural and any human being can forget.

I hope the potential we are showing will silence those of us bloggers who doubted BW’s credentials as a coach and were recalling Loga’s days at the club. Both BWs’ personalities will not work out the crowds but their results will. The confidence that our young team is showing is finally paying off. The blogger coaches who didn’t understand why we were playing the Supa loaf and equivalent winning only 2-1 yet our rivals were thumping the same teams can now see how things have changed to some of those teams.
All the same it’s still early in the season but what drives us is consistency and resilience. In the past drawing or losing to the mid-to-bottom teams has caused us the title. This time let’s collect those points so that in the even we draw or , God forbid, we lose to the big boys then we still have enough cushion to take us home.
On the sponsorship let’s wait and see. No need for speculation since the info is scanty. Also let’s welcome any sponsor with open hands the way we do our players/TB/fans from all the spheres of life

What an outing we had in machakos!thanks to Kogallo fraternity for conducting themselves with decorum and esteem.we also appreciate the warm welcome we got frm our new in-laws.they r really nice pple.

This song really left me in stitches………”Kogallo iber, imiyo ayudo…….manyien”.creativity at its best.

Anyway, back to the game.walusimbi’s absence(has been clarified)left a deep hole on the left back.more than once calabar was called in to assist kevin oluoch.
Midfield coordination has really improved.strikers didnot have to fall back too deep to pick the ball.and we still had depth in the bench;blackberry, rama, oboya, ade, mutiso, etc.conclusion:Team ochiek.Consistency jok ma ema wadwaro.

  • Oswazo, I highly welcome your view, however, you can see that on that match I did put a *, meaning it is in doubt. Now it is a reality, and I hope you had fun watching the match.
Guys, for me, I will not pinpoint eti yule and yule are worth mentioning in the team, simply because I have witnessed commitment from every individual in the pitch: fir instance, beginning of last season, I never thouht Musa Mohammed will hammer starting position, however, under BW, he is a regular!
Oboya is a joy to watch, we mellenials call them ‘wachezaji wa kulipwa’, . . .he brings entertainment and everyone else is putting effort, may long this continue

I don’t like mentioning players names but on personal input, i think Akumu and Timonah gave more than i would ever ask. For me man of the match has to be one of the two. To all other players, thank you for the good fight.

Guys ,Guys dont celebrate too much. You have defeated two weak teams that were ranked number 11 and 13 last year . Both of these teams were fighting relegation in the second half of last season. Ingwe has played two top 8 teams (number 4 and 5 ). Both of these two teams were fighting for the championship in the second half of last year.

@Ingo that’s what you guys said last year. That Gor was remaining with Sofapaka, Mathare, Tusker etc while Ingwe was remaining with City Stars, HomeBoyz, SONY etc and thus Gor was going to falter and Ingwe take the league but the points difference in the final log showed a different story. By the way those two might be the last teams on the log but they are our bogey teams and the six points are already in the basket. By your logic does it mean you meet SONY now you are supposed to thrash them because they finished 14th last year? For the last two years you have been beating Ulinzi and went with that mentality that you have all the lethal strikers and tallest and meanest defenders in the land. Ohh, how things change.
We know the league is just starting but we believe the success of a new day can be foretold in the morning. The reason we succeed is because you and your colleagues wish us all the bad things while at K’Ogalo we wish you success. So God punishes you for having ill-feelings towards your neighbour/shemejis. We still wish you the best against Supersport United and advance to the group rounds. We will then have a chance to watch those other teams as well.

Please say Hi to @Ben Disi.

Ingo, good piece of advice.we take it very positively. However, remember last season is behind every team.Becuase they performed dismally last season is not reason enough to write them off this season. City stars beat Bandari yesterday. How do you explain this? But only time will prove you wrong that Gor Mahia is yet to meet its equals in the league.the day we shall thrash Tusker,Ulinzi,Thika, KCB,Sofapaka and…………AFC, you wil look for another better excuse.

  • ingo: wat the bloody hell are you doing on our website, kwani ingwe doesnt have one, you c my good shemeji, as dan original as pointed out, you mashemejis are so obsessed with wishing the downfall of kogalo, trust me on this, thats a pipe dream and tell your brothers and sisters in the den to save themselves untold suffering by wishful thinking.now ingwe doing the chasing game on the second match day, and you are not even ashamed of commenting about the mighty kogalo, sir, in gor mahia we dont win trophies through the media but in the field, fortunately for you ingwe is that you won the 2014 league when you signed tall defenders and leading strikers.pole and all the best against superspotrs or superwatever that you will be playing

@Ingo football doesn’t apply the same logic. KRA beat KCB, KCB almost beat INGWE so will KRA beat Ingwe? It never follows. Last year we struggled to beat both HByz and Karaturi but still emerged champs when other teams beat those two easily. Ask Tusker and Sofapaka what SONY and Muhoroni did to them last year. In the league there are no longer ‘small’ teams and if that is the mentality of your team then i am a worried shemeji becuase we don’t want the sub-tribe ghost to rear it’s ugly head during the season. My advice is that treat all teams like you are playing Gor or Tusker else Nandwa might as well start counting his days if the thrid game is not won. By the way this does not mean that as Gor we are not immumne to what’s happening to your team
