Gor Mahia edge New Star 2-1

Lawrence Juma celebrates

Gor Mahia beat New Star de Douala 2-1 at the Kasarani stadium on Sunday. The goals came from Lawrence Juma and Jacque Tuyisenge.

Gor Mahia will now be hard pressed to keep their lead when they play the return leg in Cameroun next week.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Gor Mahia edged New Stars de Douala of Cameroon 2-1 in the first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup play-off at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday.

Jacques Tuyisenge secured the win for the Kenyan champions with three minutes left after Lawrence Juma’s 41st minute opener was cancelled out in the second half by Benjamin Bechem on 72 minutes.

The hosts took control early on and almost took the lead a minute into the match but Patrick Kibyen reacted fast to collect Philemon Otieno’s right foot in-swinger

In the sixth minute, Boniface Omondi could have opened the scoring but he failed to tap home Francis Kahata’s weighted pass from the right as Gor dominated proceedings.

Francis Mustafa was denied by the upright on the ninth minute after he had been teed up wonderfully by Boniface Omondi from the left flank.

The diminutive winger had done well to nutmeg his marker before floating in a cross that the Burundian controlled on his chest before his shot crashed on the upright.

New Stars, donning blue shirts, contrived to sit back and catch their opponents on the counter.

On 12 minutes, Nelson Moukeu fouled Philemon outside the 18-yard box but Kahata’s casually taken free kick came off the wall.

Omondi, a constant menace with his mazy runs on the flanks, fluffed another scoring opportunity on 29 minutes after being fed by Kahata. He lost his footing before New Stars defence cleared their lines.

Gildas Njoh had the first real chance for the visitors on 31 minutes with a dipping cross from range that troubled Boniface Oluoch in Gor Mahia goal before sailing over the bar.

On 35 minutes, Ayamo Soglongbe was brought down by Philemon Otieno 18 yards out as the visitors gained momentum but Nelson Moukeu curved the resultant free kick off the target.

Four minutes to the half time break, Juma gave hundreds of Gor fans that had turned up at the 60,000-seater something to smile about.

Juma took Shafik Batambuze’s deep pass from the left flank in his stride before lifting the ball over his marker into an empty net after Kibyen had dramatically left his line protesting his water bottle had been picked from the post by a steward.

New Stars defender Orian Jores was the first to go into Tunisian referee Guirat Haythem’s book on 67 minutes after bringing down a full-flight Mustafa just outside the box on the left flank.

Mustafa missed another glorious opportunity on 71 minutes when he was found by Omondi inside the box but went down softly calling for a penalty.

He was punished on the other end by Bechem, who rested Roland Lane on 59 minutes, who rose high to connect to Bernard Ngangue’s corner with a bullet header that gave Oluoch no chance.

In a bid to boost his attack, Gor coach Hassan Oktay sent the duo of Samuel Onyango and Erisa Ssekisambu into the fray at the expense of Boniface Omondi and Francis Mustafa on 76 and 77 minutes respectively.

It was Batambuze who provided his second assist on the day finding Tuyisenge with a sumptuous cross from the left wing that the Rwandese nodded home unmarked.

K’Ogalo need a draw of any kind in the reverse tie in Limbe next Sunday to progress to the group stage of this competition.

Haha Amor Mayienga good showing…splendid performance…hail team K’Ogalo the Mighty Warriors. We fought like soldiers and displayed a Classic Blaugrana shifting formation. The joga bonito displayed here today in Kenya is unprecedented. I mean who watched the game and doesn’t think Mayienga rocked and ruled? New Stars Douala are likewise a very technical team and therefore we must appreciate the balance of play. Special mention goes to Lawrence Juma who had a Maverick midfield showing. Hail Philemon Otieno for an amazing overlapping display. Hongera Center Back pairing of Momanyi and Joachim Oluoch you stood like soldiers. Kahata and Boniface Omondi terrific playmaking. Mustapha and Tuyisenge good game though we lost many chances. Shafik Batambuze aka Man City Laporte you were Magnifient full of Elegance. Ernest Wendo today i Jasego from Kanysda christen you the Man of The Match you bossed the midfield like a Collossus. Boniface Oluoch i don’t blame you for the goal it was a bullet header no keeper could stop not even Ederson. Substiutes Blackberry…Samuel Onyango and Ssekisambu nice pressure injection to push the opponent until they cracked. Bloggers i am happy for we must learn to appreciate overall tactical aspects of the game of football. Coach Oktay good game build on it and play away like your lives depends on it and we will prevail..

Congratulations on the slim victory despite conceding the away goal. Gor players to prepare psychologically before travelling to Cameroon. Having endured the mistreatment both in Tunisia and Nigeria, we should now be mature enough to persevere and manage at least a draw.

Some body remind me when Boni keeps a clean sheet and I will come back to comment. I’ve always said that with Boni in goal we can’t keep clean sheet but people say that I hate him but the truth is that he is not the best keeper in gor mahia fc.

But why xo we not defend corners. This is exactly how Lobbi stars scored in Nrb. Not keepers problem but outfield players not marking the opponents

Dear bloggers especially Akira we will be alright. All and every team that dominates must always go through a restructuring process whereby the central core of the playing unit is overhauled ablnd replaced. I fought for Kagere and Walusimbi to stay but failed. The said restructuring is currently happening in Real Madrid having lost Ronaldo…Juventus lost its lustre and was demoted…Bayern Munich with an aging squad is restructuring and even Barcelona is trying to find it’s former unstoppable rythmn. Manchester United fans for 6 years now know only too well what am talking about. Here in GM despite losing key players every consecutive season since 2013 we have albeit hoisted the KPL league trophy in the air as champions except in 2016 when Tusker helped by FkF docking us points took it. We are undisputed SportPesa Supercup Trophy holders too and currently battling to make a second CCC appearance in a row. Those are no mean achievements comrades. We will defend our league title and keep the trophy for good this season too. We will not gag you as your high demands are what pushes GM even harder to perform and achieve it’s targets. Just wish the team and Coach Hassan Oktay well esp Jakoyo. We will tweak the foreign legion in due course with Guikan to be released and Ssekisambu given more time to show us his mettle for he is a good player who can impact GM bigtime. Jausenge Shaffik and Mustafa are okay so far…We shall endeavor to excel brethren..Akira we give you glory ever so often brother what is the problem? Its good that we are rebuilding with the previous team b players like S Onyango, B Omondi, L Juma coming to the fore. Ondiek should be given a run in the team as well as well as Muguna. We risk loosing Kahata for cheap, is there any plan to renew his contract before its too late

Congrats team. This issue of conceding , is becoming a personal vendetta. The last two games we conceded & it was not an issue bcoz boni was not the keeper. If guys were conversant with football manenos they would be aware that Fred & shaba were signed as a back up, Note backup.Bytheway do we even know where Fred came from ??, why he wasn’t the first choice keeper in that team.Let me say this ,Fred is a gud jagoal, but 2main easons why Okumbi preferred mboya , Fred is easily drawn out of his goal which at times results to saves bt more than often are miscalculation .So far this part of Fred play has not been exposed bt there was an instance( a red flag)in that game against Mathare ,2)Aerial balls were a problem for Fred especially corners when the opponents have tall players especially strikers.I believe the assumption that the opponents could be tall , is what could have persuaded oktay to pick boni.

Continue supporting Boni but remember that with the current strikers we have, even if our defense will be tight, I can assure you that if Boni will be in goal, we shall concede at least two in Cameroon

Guys, i have not seen Gor play a fluid game like testerday. Our only problem.is taking those chances. Not really a problem with the coach but with the individual players. Omondi shoyld have confidence to get into the box instead of looking for support from players 20 meters behind him and Mustafa should learn to keep to his feet. falling down needlessly won’t help him

The biggest lesson we should all learn is that the team still performed exceptionally wel in the absence of Joash, Shakava and Mieno. That tels us that noone is indispensable in Gor.All weshould now do is to wish them the best on the return encounter. This issue of mara Oktal, mara Zico, mara EC can wait

The problem is expecting good results with perenial “poor” planning. Hopefully airtickets & Dec salaries/allowances have been paid since SP advanced the monies ages ago. Btw last year CCC’s 27m was not enough for EC’s greed. So ARE PLAYERS MOTIVATED??

@Dan Original, I share your sentiments up there. Our boys played very well and we need to appreciate that, in as much as some of us fans are not satisfied with the score line. I believe that the team is rebuilding and gelling. We will soon hit top gear. Qualifying or not qualifying for CC is not the end of the world. I think the harsh criticism of coach Oktay by some fans is unfair and demoralizing to him. A coach’s main job is to come up with strategy and formation to create scoring chances, and Oktay is achieving that going by the many chances we have created, though missed. At top level football, it is the job of the players, especially strikers, to finish off these chances. So when a player finds himself in a situation where it is easier to score than not to score and chooses to do the later, how do you blame the coach?

Sincerely the Gor players I saw yesterday just require A COACH nothing else nearly perfect on all departments. Quite different from the ones I saw playing Posta Rangers on Wednesday. its up to GM if they require a good coach or they are okey with Oktay or somebody else but the players were wonderful. Officials must up their game to make Gor great again. We are almost there.

New Stars coach rips his team, hails Gor Mahia Image-FKF

    By Soka.co.ke | Mon 14 Jan, 2019 11:07

New Stars de Douala head coach Gerald Mbimi blasted his charges for a poor show after going down to Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia on Sunday 13 January in a CAF Confederations Cup playoff clash tie staged at the MISC Kasarani.

The coach, speaking after the game said he did not understand why his charges didn’t give a good show and vowed to prepare well ahead of the second leg.

    Not Good

“I think my team was not good this afternoon like Gor Mahia. I don’t know why that happened but we are going to prepare for the second leg with hope that we get a good result,” Mbimi said.

While the coach hailed Gor Mahia for their style of play, he believes they can overturn the deficit and qualify for the group stages of the competition.

    Good Team

“They (Gor Mahia) are a good team. They play well with or without the ball and we have to prepare well for the return match if we are to get a result. I can’t say my tactics failed to work today but what I can say is I am going to prepare well for the second leg,” he added.

The return leg is slated for Sunday 20 January in Cameroon.

we are regretting the idea of letting kagere, jajawalo(walusimbi) and Karim nzigimana to live and replacing them with untested players in the likes of Guikan, mustapha etc.let’s see how things will unfold in this trophy less season

@Nyakwar Ondege, the only trophy that has slipped us is the Sportpesa Community Cup and in place of it we have the SOYA runners-up trophy. We also still have the SportPesa Cup in Tz, the league, the CAFCC, the FKF Shield, CECAFA (if it will be there). All we need is to believe. Remember that even with Walusimbi and Kagere we still used to lose some games. Even Simba has lost games in Tz including the Mapinduzi Cup this Sunday to Azam, Kaiser Chiefs loses so often. In other words the team is more important than individual players. We lost Sserenkuma and the following year we did it unbeaten, We lost Olunga but still won the league. We pray that Oliech will bring in the winning mentality in the team and as fans we don’t end up being the biggest demotivators of the players.

kagere is doing gud job at SIMBA now,yet I gree that gor is in a process of rebuilding but going with the players signed and the player s we let go,there is a big contrast, the likes of Guikan, mustafa, should give way for signings of top foreigners in the department of striking otherwise let prepare for trophy less season. most annoying is that our former coach Kerr is doing extra well and in a more difficult league yawa, what’s wrong with oktay who constantly complains of on thing of strikers not finishing their chances, until when??

Why should he bemoan wasted chances if he keeps fielding the likes of Mustapha in every game who cannot score in an empty net. Kipkurui has only played two matches and has two goals. Guikan the black sheep has played two matches has two goals. Ssekisambu has played very few games already has a goal. These players are constantly being frozen out with Mustapha seemingly the first name on the team sheet. It his job to select his team so he should take responsibility!!

As I have already said before, the two defenders(Oluoch& Momanyi) are actually very good players that must be retained at all cost. Imagine with little or no competitive football since the turn of the year, they still managed to hold the defense together. Congratulations my twin towers. You deserve to be appreciated. As for the return leg, I hope we learnt something from the Lobi game back in Nija!! Defend as if your life depends on it but try also to sneak in a goal or two. God bless Gor Mahia!!!
