Gor Mahia edge Ushuru in Top 8 opener

Gor Mahia beat Ushuru 1-0 in the KPL Top 8 quarter-final match at Nyayo stadium on Monday. Yet again it was the reliable Jacque Tuyisenge who scored the winner. Gor Mahia are now through to the semi-finals.

K’Ogalo came into the match as favorites considering the fact that that the taxmen have never won against them, nor scored a goal. It took a few minutes for the Green Army to settle and it dictated the tempo from the word go, with youngster Erick Ouma impressing after being given the node ahead of regular Abouba Sibomana.

The taxmen eventually settled and in the ninth minute, Aziz Okaka did well to control the match on the left wing but was unable to trouble Jerry Onyango, who returned between the post ahead of Boniface Oluoch.

In the 14th minute, Ushuru’s Wafula was played perfectly onside by Charles Okwemba, and the forward failed to score, considering it was a one on one situation. It almost came to haunt Ken Kenyatta’s charges as ten minutes later, Khalid Aucho passed the ball to George Odhiambo on the right, and the latter played a cross in which was headed over the bar by Tuyisenge.

A minute later, it was K’Ogalo again as Philemon Otieno committed a foul on the edge of the box, and Aucho took the resulting free-kick which came off the right post, with Odhoji well beaten.

It was a one way traffic as Ushuru was pinned in its half, and in the 37th minute, the Kenyan champions won a corner which was taken by Ouma. He exchanged a short one with Tuyisenge and the former played a cross in, which ‘Blackberry’ failed to capitalize on with the goal at his mercy.

In the second half, it was a balanced affair as the tax collectors came with relaxed nerves, denying their opponents space and time to pass the ball like they did in the first minutes. However, it was Gor Mahia, who looked dangerous, did everything right apart from scoring.

In the 61st minute, a ball was floated in from the left with four Gor Mahia players offside. With everyone else waiting for the flag to go up, the assistant referee had different ideas as he let the game continue, with Tuyisenge finishing it past unbelieving Odhoji.

Despite protests by Ushuru, the goal stood and it ensured Gor Mahia booked a semi-final date with Tusker, with Muhoroni entertaining Ulinzi Stars in another semi-final.

  • Nangoja wenye wanaelewa sana waseme. Lakini jameni Gor tunangangana sana. Ni kama bahati tu. Wacha ningoje wenye wanajua Philosophy waandike. Lakini Jerry leo ametuokowa sana. La sivyo goli mbili zingeingia. Na tena mpira ni kurudi tu kwa goal keeper kila saa. Yawa .

Marcello Ouma was a revelation but I still have doubts with Mercello the coach aka Ze maria

  • @Samuel Ouma let’s wait for June and see if with proper players he can change the team because every coach needs a good team;that’s one reason FN left us.So this June true Gor fans wasilale;wapige kambi kwa Ngala

  • Congrats but Gor shud be thinking about Africa now. What I saw against Ushuru cannot conquer Africa. These players need to start showing ambition.
    Gor needs to do better.
Meanwhile congrats to Were in Zesco. Seems the guy has turned the Zambian league into the Were show.
Kahata inclusion seems to sharpen Gor each time he comes in. The team shows signs of high potential within some players, but there are some players who also seem not to fit.
Gor Mahia has the highest concentration of national team players so much more is expected.

  • Mmmmmmm. Not a convincing win. Clubs like Muhoroni Youth are scoring goals but for us a goal is hard to come by.

  • Gor is not convincing at all. Nothing to celebrate we need good strikers coming June. We will need Kagere and again i wonder why Kahata cannot be given full time. We need 2 more good strikers.

  • Quite alot to celebrate.Things picking up.the speed is coming.the attacking formation the best in the league so far.the goals will soon come.G.BlackBerry the most technical player.can pool three opponents to himself and relieve the other attackers.Ze maria is a genius.each game with it’s style of approach.not afraid to test his fringe players in any match.can rest anyone and play any one.characteristic of a qualified coach.by the time he gets his first 11,Gor will be invincible.

    • Congrats to the team. For me the positive side is that quite a number of non regulars started in that match and they still won. A win is a win, whether it is 1-0 or 5-0.

  • Let me just reserve my comments and speak after June. This a win is a win mentality with whatever it takes bora bao- like the 4 player offside goal doesn’t convince but we keep on marching regardless with eyes fixed on June Transfers

  • I really agree with u @joods. we shud support our team not much critics. A look at how FN played last season, it was better and entertaining but that doesn’t mean zemaria is a dumb. He found a lot going on in the club including player indiscipline and sabotage plus exit of best ever forwards. Let’s give him time as he is yet to find his corrective measures right.

I like the way Marcelo plays. His vigour currently cannot be matched by any other Gor player. I fear for Siboumana as the young boy will bench him. the good thing is that the young boy can also play as a winger/midfielder. There are a number of players still struggling technically, ball control and vision still poor. Ze Maria cannot be responsible for teaching us the basic football skills.
Was very good to see Saleh get his first start for Gor and it came with a win. The fact that the other players can be benched is something new to Gor as FN basically played 11 players for a whole season.

We meet Muhoroni in Ksm, what a cracker of a match though I still believe we will be victorious. The bigger they come the more we slay them

  • Being a Gor Mahia fan notwithstanding, I found it hard to celebrate that goal yesterday. Infact if it were possible the entire Gor mahia fraternity, including the management and coach, should reject the goal and demand for a replay of the match. We should not allow that kind of mediocricy in refereeing. Had that goal been scored agaisnt us……..stones would have flown.

    • @Marto that is the truth . I was amused when the coach said that Gor has a winning mentality!

  • 1. If not Onyango is could have been out as the match was. 2. Last year Olunga realized his dream in Gor as Akumu and Owino, let sacrifice Abuoba S to get another striker creating place for Marcelo who have all the potentials. 3. All players must be discipline just like the defender of the year and Jagoal. Play kahata midfield and Marcelo wing with Luke and Saleh fullback

      • It is a team game and Onyango too has a duty to defend and stop goals from going inside. Was Onyango not playing for Gor Mahia?
