Gor Mahia eliminated from Shield
Gor Mahia’s attempt to win a second major title for 2018 has come to an end when they were beaten by Kariobangi Sharks on post match penalties.

Gor Mahia were sent home for the second tournament in a week as Kariobangi Sharks beat them 4-2 on penalties with regulation time ending in a barren draw in the Shield clash staged at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday 2nd September.
This was the second time Gor were eliminated on penalties in the same tournament after losing last season to Bandari. Gor Mahia dominated the early exchanges knocking the ball around in their usual style, looking to overwrite the USM Alger defeat that bundled them out of the CAF Confederations Cup. Sharks came close in the 17th minute when Duke Abuya cut the ball back to Harrison Mwendwa but the former Mathare United skied his effort.
In the 21st minute Francis Mustapha swung in a lovely cross but it fell to the wrong man, as Boniface Omondi who was virtually the shortest man on the field couldn’t guide his header on target. Former Talanta FC talisman thought he had put his side ahead Midway through the first half but he was flagged for offside after George Abege laid off Duke Abuya cross onto him.K’Ogalo were forced into a substitution in the 41st minute after Lawrence Juma pulled his harmstring and was replaced by Raphael Asudi. Both teams went into the half time break locked at 0-0.
Second half
Sharks started the second half a much rejuvenated side and went close in the 50th minute when Patilah Omotto struck the upright directly from a corner. Sharks looked menacing in the second half probing the Gor defense on a number of occasions but finishing proved to be their achilies heel. Sharks introduced Sydney Simale upfront to bolster their attacking options.
Mustapha was brought down by Pascal Ogweno just outside the 18 yard area, the Burundian stepped up to take the free kick calling Gad Mathews to a spectacular save. Harun Shakava was introduced to nullify the Sharks threat that was brewing as Ephrem Guikan was handed a rest. Moses Mwangi was thrown into the foray into the the 74th minute in place of an exasperated Shaphan Oyugi. Eluid Lokuwam was handed the final 10 minutes as Innocent Wafula. Ebrimah Sanneh for George Abege with Sharks having three out and out strikers. Sydney Lokale pounced on Charles Momanyi’s lose back pass and got past goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo but his touch was heavy as he could prevent the ball from going out. Penalties were needed to separate the two teams after the end of regulation time.
Penalties
Patilah Omotto couldn’t hold his nerves as Odhiambo saved the first penalty. Mustapha converted the first for Gor to hand them an early advantage after slotting the ball into the top right corner. Ogweno picked the same slot as Mustapha to pull Sharks level. Ondiek ballooned his shot well over the bar with Omwenga scoring from Sharks third penalty kick.
Boniface Omondi sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-2. Goalkeeper Gad Mathews stepped up to face his opposite number to score, Joachim Olouch hit the cross bar as the ball went out. Duke Abuya sealed the win for Sharks 4-2 on penalties.

That’s the nature of football guys, who would imagine that Watford could beat Spurs yesterday? Even Atletico Madrid were recently surprised by a small team. Congrats players for not conceding during the regular time. We shall live to fight another day. By the way Kaizer chiefs were beaten 1- 0 by supersport in the presence of walusimbi who was thought to be the solution to chief’s defensive errors. So let’s avoid unnecessary castigations and understand the nature of a competition.
Team Blue outplayed by Sharks and Gor exits the Shield. Did we overpraise them? Kerr wonders whether they were training while the rest were in Algiers. No double prospect anymore.
I think it’s time we now concentrated on the next season preps. Let the players rest or take it easy since there will be no resting once the season ends. The Charity Shield will be played on 5th Dec and season starts on 8th Dec. No time to rest.
My observation from yesterday’s game is that we still need an aggressive striker mostly from out of the country. Apart from Tuyisenge the rest are still Work I progress yet the CAF CL needs ready-to-go strikers.
Our hope is that Tuyisenge’s trip to US will not be the beginning of another round of confusion, like Walusimbi’s and Kagere’s
Bogus display. Bogus defence as usual, dead midfield. I support Kerr on the earliers displays, but when a foreign coach is in charge of such display like of yesterday(Sharks) then questions have to be raised. I have no problem with the defeat. A team wins and loses. When a team, apart from the goalie, is idealess then this is a matter of concern.
My worry is that I did not see any technical awareness in terms of player formation. All I saw was the plan to kick the ball in front and hope for the best. My concern is that this is not how Gor can take on Africa. If Gor is too big for this league then they must always act the part. The characteristics have to be visible even at times of lose. Let the lion always display his character even when in defeat.
But of bigger concern is that the Team manager is failing on his job. That display brings into concern wether they were training. If the other team had arrived from Algiers in the morning, why was Shakava made to play and where was the rest of the local squad that did not travel?
Kerr has lost the vision, the dress room character and perhaps it’s time we get a replacement…….of late he has become the whining coach NOT the winning coach that he used to be.
Look at his record first Mr. Jakoyo and then look at the league standing before you talk. Gor is not AFC to change TB like women’s pants.

Gor Mahia have been bundled out of Shield Cup after falling to Kariobangi Sharks on post-match penalties following a barren draw.
The William Muluya coached side has never won against Gor Mahia in the four league outings, conceding a total of eleven goals and scoring just three; this year alone, they had conceded six goals and the Shield Cup gave them an opportunity to get something.
Sharks started the match brightly getting an early opportunity but Harrison Mwendwa, under no pressure whatsoever, failed to capitalize on a well placed pass by the dangerous Duke Abuya.
K’Ogalo’s realistic chance came after quarter an hour when Francis Mustapha broke down the right, delivered in a sumptuous cross that was well saved by goalkeeper Gad Mathews who, uncharacteristically, had a quiet afternoon.
The Sharks were by far a better side in the first half with the newly crowned Kenyan Premier League champions playing like a county side. In the 18th minute, Mwendwa was once again by Abuya, however the wasteful forward could not guide his shot on target.
About seven minutes later, the visitors thought they had scored courtesy of Erick Kapaito, but the assistant referee’s offside flag denied him. Ten minutes later, it was Wesley Onguso, who had to come into his team’s rescue.
An inch perfect pass was played to Abuya, but his first touch let him down and the former Western Stima man did well to clear the ball for unfruitful corner. The crossbar rescued Gor Mahia with about five minutes to the break. George Abege found the on rushing Kapaito whose header beat everyone apart from the woodwork.
Even after the break, Sharks continued pressing and it took the intervention of the busy Odhiambo Peter to keep the scores level in the 49th minute. The custodian had to narrow the angle for Mwendwa and the forward could not find the way of beating Gor Keeper.
The woodwork, once again, denied the visitors in the 51st minute. Sharks won a corner that was curled in beautifully by Patillah Omotto, however, it came off the post and Gor Mahia defenders cleared it.
With about 20 minutes to go, Pascal Ogweno conceded a free-kick on the edge of the eighteen yard box, it was taken by Mustapha and Gad had to make a fingertip save to deny him. Neither of the two sides could get a goal in the regular time, prompting the match to be decided by penalties.

Losing ni kawaida and congrats to Sharks but Gor displaying those long useless balls is what i have a problem with and Kerr must review that or else it will be taken that that is his philosophy…

theres no Kerr A and B…he has worked full time..hardly rested. the players probably never trained in his absence. He was standing most of the game alone despite jet lag…pls give Kerr a brek!…is it a must to play all the remaining fixtures?.a break would do to prepare for the new season. burn out is real.

Andriamirado Andrianarimanana joined Kaizer Chiefs in the concluded transfer window from Fosa Juniors but the Madagascan club are yet to receive the transfer fee. I do not think that Kerr is a bad coach. My problem is when low quality football is not explained. I currently will not blame Kerr entirely but only on a few issues. Yesterdays display was more a case of “while the coach is away the mice will not train.”
1. Kerr needs to understand the characters(EC) he is working with, people who will sabotage you just to have one of their own given the job. Why else did Gor play like a team that has never trained before.
2. The coach should not drag himself into player transfers politics. It’s not done the same as in Europe where the Manager actually has a say. Here they ‘sell’ players thru’ the back door as you have witnessed. The same people then stand on the rooftops crying foul.
3. Don’t get into a stage where you ‘argue’ with the local coaches. Silence them with thorough victories. The moment K.Sharks start giving you problems then how can you convince anyone that you can beat USM. They soon start the “you are not special” arguments. What follows is an acrimonious exit. Case study why all the foreign coaches come with praises but end up leaving in a huff. Hence my argument about foreign coaches. It beats logic to hire a foreign coach to beat Uganda et Tanzania. Beat for me Morocco and the rest become “by-products”.
4. Advice the EC on greed tournaments. My problem here is that you seemed to be a part of it. So when you complain of player fatigue it sounds hollow. Greed tournaments can never compare to the CafCC or the CafCL.
My strategy would be to drop the team A team B approach but have one good “big team with perfect replaceable parts”. This would mean that you carefully manage the number of games you play.
The team A team B could work on certain conditions which currently the club does not have. Even the European clubs have never been known to have team A and B approach but rather good substitutions in all departments. Fatigue does catch up with them but they know what to chew and what to discard.
Gor Mahia is a big club so they say, but when one looks keenly you see the reality. Victories quickly makes us forget the ills the club is facing. Hope is suddenly raised making some of us believe that we can conquer like Napoleon. We begin to make sentences that contain Gor Mahia and Barcelona forgetting that the club has never held a Champions League title. But BAD CLUB MANAGEMENT quickly brings us back to earth in a crush landing. We at times gather up quick enough but alas only to make the same mistakes again and again. The sad part that the club managers could easily correct these mistakes and reach the heights of Motema Pembe.
@Dinga…Musymo…BB..Jamigori et al we need signings..I sang that Gor as currently constituted has no number 8 worth note . How can a team play possession football without a box to box enforcer?Our number 6 DMF Wendo knocks down all and sundry giving fouls and cant control the ball meaning we are ever under pressure defensively. The number 8 who is supposed to control the Tempo of the game called Mieno is slower than tortoise and cannot exert any physical pressure on opponents and doesn’t command presence in the pitch save for a few deft touches when we get weak opposing teams. Final result is a slow dead midfield that we end up trying to bypass by playing long tennis football of clearances from defence to try find attackers with the ball. Supersport United has one dreadlocked Lethsolonyane who is terrific and Cape Town City has Lucas Modise formely of Amakhosi. They are splendid midfield enforcers. We had Baba Kizito once and Aucho coupled with DMF Gattuso and can anyone say we didnt have a superb midfield then that would command display?Let us sign quality players. Our foreign legion currently is of No Use to GM with Guikan totally out of sync with Kerr…Tuyisenge in USA letting golden boot race get lost.. Francis Mustafa will never be an impact player like Kagere ever…Karim still 40% of what we knew and Waza gone…We are suffering partly due to lack of our continental stalwarts whom if we are to be honest are what made us bounce back in Kenyan football from the 18 year hiatus and without whom we are a very average team that even K Sharks can take in and overrun in all departments…
@Jasego, we need some serious signings. You in the made some proposals but wheeler dealers like Aduda messed up. We had a chance to sign the Ugandan goal poacher but Aduda and inept office were busy thinking about their fat and big stomach. We need a good goal keeper, two established offensive and defensive midfielders, one or two defenders and one lethal strikers
@Jasego, true we need players who can shield the club in big tournaments such as CECAFA and CAF…thats where we have big blundering year in , year out .
Unfortunately, players acquired from the domestic and regional leagues can only go as far as to win KPL league. In that case it is of my view that the club needs to make serious investment in CAF 2019 season ..
1. A serious goalkeeper – farouk Shikalo calibre,
2. A serious striker – mandela and camara of Horoya , Guinea or even Bingiriyimana (no 7) from Rayon sport and
3. A serious offensive midfielder full of goals – paul were or duncan otieno type of player should be acquired
@ jakoyo where is that huge budget to cater for recruitment bearing in mind that “OUR” EC depends on “GONYA-GONYA” during expenditure while there is no transparency on income / revenue generated. How much did WAZA transfer fee cost?
But in goalkeeping, I don’t think we have a better keeper than Frederic Odhiambo, If we bring like shikhalo,Odhiambo will still prevail over him and his career will stagnate.what we need is to sell Odhoji and bring a young keeper to be the third goalkeeper. Boniface and Odhiambo are the best we’ve in the country and we can’t afford to loose. Most goals that we conceded we conceded when odhoji was in goal and not Boniface. In fact this season in gor mahia fc Boniface has more clean sheets than odhoji whom they shared majority of matches. But our major problem is midfield, a no.8 like muguna,who can supply balls to strikers and a central defender. Shakava have failed to live to our expectations. We thought that elevating him to the captaincy will make him up his game but in return, he has been very errortic.
Three issues.
1. Sadly GM has not done well in the most crucial matches this season. Knocked out in the semis of CECAFA, failed to beat Rayon Sport hence qualify for the 1/4s of CAF CC, and knocked out of the 1/4s of Shield Cup. We seem to be weak in the knock-out tournaments, winning the league not withstanding. Kerr must address this but as long as the sharing the prize money 20/80 % holds players poor performance can always be expected.
I suggest that EC formulates a winning bonus structure for next years CAF tournaments.
1.Premlinary round – kshs.50K for an away or home win for each of the 18 squad players and TB and kshs.30k for an away draw and kshs.20k for a home draw.
2.For the group stages- kshs 100 for an away/home win for each of the 18 squad players and TB, kshs.75k for an away draw and kshs.50k for a home draw.
3.For the 1/4s- kshs.200 for a home/away win, kshs.150k for an away draw and kshs.100 for a home draw.
4.For the semis-kshs.500k for a home/away win, kshs.300K for an away draw and kshs.200 for a home draw.
5.For the final kshs.1m for a home/away win, kshs.750k for an away draw and kes.500k for a home draw.
Note that in the case of the final a home and away win, that’s kshs.2 per player. For 18 players its only kshs.36m against the prize money of kshs.126M i.e $1.25. Each stage of even the lesser CAF CC can finance the above winning bonuses but not bloated EC’s greed.
E.g how many matches is a player expected to play in a season. How are players compensated for extra/ adhoc tournaments.
@ ODUOR 12 that is a very good incentive scheme to the players but so wishful proposal indeed to the current “GONYA-GONYA” EC. How many times did they beg to bailed out with air tickets before you even talk of bonus?
@Oduor, this is a very excellent proposal for motivating our players and technical bench. I am willing to contribute Kshs.2.4 million for the CAF Champion league competition. I suggest fans can open motivation account that can receive and account for every cent received and distributed to players/technical bench.
To the airhead who once ranted on this site that his car is protected by the blood of Jesus, as if Christ came to save engines of cars rather than the souls on mankind, let me remind him that Mugabe was liberation hero who however overstayed in the presidency of his country to the detriment of his people.
Case in point how can Gor Mahia players spend the night at the airport and always complain about unpaid allowances?
But as has been eloquently stated on this site one is only responsible for what one writes and not how an airhead interprets what is written.
Yes Mugabe may have rescued GM from relegation and for that we are grateful but we are ever more grateful for the men who founded GMFC and the chairmen who won CAF, CECAFA, and even won doubles.
Do not compare GMFC’s current achievements with the position Mugabe found it but rather by its highest ever achievements i.e where it ought to be!
My word: we have a good coach only let down by shambolic EC, good players let down by shambolic EC; we need a clinical finishe(to play alongside Jausenge), a sure midfielder to support Kahata (Muguna, if serious) and sure defenders on the left (Batambuze)
and right (Nzigimana out), an experienced central defender to play alongside Shakava, one experienced goalkeeper to support Odhiambo(as number 1) and Oluoch (Odhoji out). Give Kerr these and play only key competitions,and we can compare notes by end of next season. But will anyone listen.
@ ogango trailer, Paul we’re is a free agent in December, the burundian biringiyimana is affordable and farouk shikalo is willing to be paid out.
Surely, even masoud juma who is also a free agent can be roped in.
The truth is we need 2 or 3 big name signing otherwise it will be the same next year, you win KpL league and ate bundled out of CAF and CECAFA
