Gor Mahia end 4 game sprint with six points

Gor Mahia collected six points out of 12 in their last four games.  It was always going to be difficult to play four difficult games in a space of 10 days. This is especially true at Gor Mahia; Given the mass player exodus, the bench has been left depleted leaving the technical bench with few options to rest key players or replace tiring players. Fatigue likely played  a role in the disappointing draw with Bandari.

And it was not made easy by Bandari who are battling relegation and came ready to defend and fight for a draw. Speaking to the club site, captain Jerim Onyango credited Bandari

“We battled hard and tried to break them down and we managed to do it a couple of times, but we didn’t quite get that final ball right. We’re happy with the way we battled and performed but disappointed with the final ball and not getting that goal.

This was our game in hand and it was important not to lose it. We wanted to win it but credit to them, they were quite well organized.

You have these sort of games and that’s when it’s important to stay solid and compact and not give them anything as well” he said.

Solid defence but lack of playmaking options

Nevertheless Gor Mahia’s defence appears solid having conceded only one goal in the last six games. Much of the credit for that goes to Jerim Onyango for his heroics against Tusker, Chemelil and Ulinzi, while David Owino “Calabar”, Musa Mohamed and Kevin Oluoch have been solid throughout.

Coach Frank Nuttall for his part expressed disapointment with the draw against Bandari.

“I am sorry to the fans because this is not the result they wanted or what they had hoped for. “It’s unfortunate we drew and did not perform to the fans expectations,” he said

Gor Mahia lost a number of playmakers at mid-season and have yet to replace them. The midfield as it is currently constituted has excellent ball winners but is lacking a player who can make that killer pass. Hence the decision to move Walusimbi further up.   Once promising players like Herbert Kopany and Angelo Okumu have yet to measure up to their potential.

Poor Officiating

And the matter of referees favouring Gor Mahia can be firmly put to rest following the Bandari match where a referee allowed what was a genuine goal by Geoffrey Walusimbi. Captain Jerim Onyango decried the poor officiating that led to the disallowed goal.

“I do not see how that would have been disallowed yet a Bandari defender had a flick on it. Our match officials have let us down once again and it is a pity. It was a genuine goal” he said to futaa.com.

League Standings

Gor Mahia have now played the same number of matches as Sofapaka. They are only two points above Sofapaka which means they have no cushion. A draw or a loss against City Stars next Saturday will see Gor Mahia relinquish their lead. And since City Stars will come ready to park the bus so hopefully the technical bench will come up with a strategy, a breakdown tailor to remove the bus.

Of all the things happening Gor Mahia is currently the better team as far as current league stands. So we still stand to be counted as the best team in Kenya so far. Keep it up boys!!!

  • The boys played their hearts out. It’s never easy to win a game that your opponent approaches with a draw mentality. They are also facing relegation. City Stars will be equally tough. Am happy with the team.

we were also robbed of a clear goal that would have made the difference.Am urging the hard working Eric Ochieng to get shaper in front of goal. This is the time the midfielders should come and give the strikers more punch especially when the opponent is defending the entire period. He has lost two open chances in the last two matches and this is not good though it happens. Otherwise, let’s focus on the next game. Our main threat now remains as Batoto now that tusker lost in Nkr.

Given the tough fixture that sofapaka have,we may as well retain the league because tusker too are not doing themselves any favour,i see them finishing 5th or 6th,Kimanzi is likely to go home. With the squad he had, league was his for the taking.

whey use four defensive midfielders in a match, while you want to win? it’s high time oboya &kariuki starts as offensive behind the strikers. then you will see gaols. just my opinion

    WORRYING TREND

OMERA why we cannot thrash lower division teams over and over and over and over still defy belief…………..Nairobi Provincial league side Intercity FC came from behind to record a one all draw against Kenya Premier League [KPL] side Gor Mahia in a friendly match played on Friday 27 September at Nairobi City Stadium starting 0830 hours.

the boys need to be congratulated. but i do have a problem with the teams mental strength. but if the other teams like tusker et ulinzi who have everything going well for them in terms of support et all yet cannot dislodge gor from top spot, then too bad for them to complain about referees. nothing stopped tusker from beating all the other teams in the first place. one wonders then how well gor would have done would a sponsor be in place. unfortunately the rotten lot of gor stone throwing fans have put paid to all this. in conclusion i would support the removal of j.onyango as captain of the team coz he is basically idealess about the fighting spirit needed in a team. the team needs someone who can rally the rest to win matches despite the odds. a good example of weak minded lot is bandari, even paid a mill dollars, they will never go anywhere coz they are a spineless lot. this is the decay that clogs kenyan football… players trying to hoodwink the public that their poor performance is because of pay.
