Gor Mahia end season unbeaten and with new records

Gor Mahia ended a historic season by beating Muhoroni Youth 2-0 to end the 2015 season with an unbeaten record. In the process, Gor Mahia also set anew KPL record for points with a total of 78 points. The goals were scored by Ali Abondo and Michael Olunga.

It was a fitting end to a stellar season in which GorMahia convincingly dispatched all opponents. Even long after they were assured of the title, Gor Mahia never took their foot off the accelerator pedal. In the last few matches, Gor Mahia has beaten 3 teams that are in the top six : Tusker, Sofapaka and now Muhoroni. They also drew against Ulinzi at Afraha in a match that was marred by a poor playing surface and an Ulinzi side that was determined to spoil the game with rough play.

Also worth noting is that the previous points record of 75 points set by SoNy Sugar in 2006, was set at a time when the league had 18 teams and thus teams played a total of 34 matches. Gor Mahia were able to surpass that total while playing four games less.

Matchwise

Muhoroni was never going to be an easy opponent. In the second leg of the 2015 they rose from the relegation zone to their current 5th position. At one point they went eleven matches without losing. They came into this match intent on ruining Gor Mahia’s party. They started well and had the first opportunity of the match with a free-kick which Wycliff Nyangechi wasted.

But Gor Mahia gradually took control of the game. Khalid Aucho had Gor Mahia’s first opportunity in the 15th minute but his effort was easily dealt with by the Muhoroni Youth keeper. Harun Shakava who of late has found the net with often almost put Gor Mahia ahead at the half hour mark but his effort went inches over the bar.

Gor Mahia started the second half with the same intensity they had finished the first half. A Karim Nizigiyimana cross intended for Olunga almost resulted in a goal but for alert goalkeeping by Daniel Kiptoo.

Gor Mahia’s pressure finally paid off in the 61st  minute: Ali Abondo who has been resurgent of late scored from a well taken direct free-kick, sending the crowd into raptures. Gor Mahia continued to pressure. Khalid Aucho sent a fierce drive which Daniel Kiptoo had to stretch full length to parry. Olunga who was heavily marked throughout the game was next with an effort in the 76th minute. But his header went wide.

In the 85th minute he was finally able to escape his markers attention to score the second goal. It was a fitting end to the match. He ended as second leading scorer in the 2015 league to fulfill the promise he made at the beginning of the season: “Since I scored 12 goals with Thika United, I believe I can score many more goals with Gor Mahia” said Olunga in January
