Gor Mahia floor NA Hussein Dey 2-0

Tuyisenge, Mustafa, Kahata, Momanyi, celebbrate the opening goal

Gor Mahia scored a memorable 2-0 win over NA Hussein Dey of Algeria. It marks the first time that Gor Mahia has beaten an Algerian side. The goals came from Francis Kahata and Jacque Tuyisenge.

Additional reporting from Capital Sport

Two late goals from Francis Kahata and Jacques Tuyisenge saw record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia hit Algeria’s NA Hussein Dey 2-0 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on Sunday evening to go top of Group D in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The result saw Gor move top with six points while Hussein remained second with four pending the later game between Zamalek and Petro Atletico in Alexandria.

The game looked well to end in a barren draw after Hussein did their end of time wasting tactics throughout the match, but Kahata’s bullet of a shot on his weaker right foot and Jacques Tuyisenge’s third goal of the group phase saw Gor come out victorious in a dramatic tie.

The final five minutes of the game sure made up for all the drama that Hussein’s time slowing tactics had deprived of the game.

Chems Edine Harrag was sent off for bad mouthing the referee just after his side conceded, and there was a near maul in the technical area after K’Ogalo scored the second.

The Hussein bench poured into the Gor side just after they complained of objects thrown at them almost ending in a near fist fight between officials of both sides.

Of the 45 minutes played in the opening half, Hussein players must have spent half of them on the floor trying to kill the momentum of the game whenever Gor were building up play and growing into the game.

They had to make two changes, Ahmed Gasmi and Hocine El Orfi coming off within the first half and replaced by Abderouf Chouiter and Hocine Laribi respectivel.

While Gasmi picked up a head injury after a clash on the air with Samuel Onyango, El Orfi went down in the late stages of the half clutching his calf.

Gor had the chances in the opening half and fairly should have gone back to the dressing room at least a goal up.

In the second minute of the game, Onyango had the game’s first chance when he took the ball well by his chest but his shot on the volley was inches wide.

The visitors came close in the 10th minute when Faouzi Yaya chipped the ball behind the Gor defense but Ouallid Allati’s effort at lobbing the ball over keeper Boniface Oluoch was futile the ball going wide.

Two minutes on the turn, Gor had a brilliant chance to break the deadlock when Nicholas Kipkurui stole the ball off a Hussein defender before squaring to Jacques Tuyisenge whose shot on the weaker left foot was saved by the keeper.

Gor continued to pile pressure on the visitors, forcing them to play on the back foot, but they couldn’t get the final quality ball to break the deadlock.

In the 35th minute, a clean one-two change of passes between Onyango and Tuyisenge saw Onyango break into the box, but the winger was bundled off the ball as he prepared to pull the trigger.

At the stroke of fulltime, Hussein had their first effort at goal when Elyes Yaiche broke into the box, but his shot after being pushed out wide was an easy catch for Oluoch in Gor’s goal.

A few minutes into the second half, Gor were almost caught out for throwing bodies upfield when Harrag sent Yaya through on goal from the left, but the latter’s shot at Oluoch’s near post hit the side netting.

Gor kept the pressure but Hussein defended in numbers and cleared any ball that landed in their zone.

But, they cracked in the final five minutes of the game, Gor taking it home at the death. Kahata broke the deadlock in the 85th minute when he slammed the ball home after picking up a cross from Shafik Batambuze.

Even before the decibel levels in the stadium could lower from Gor’s goal, Tuyisenge sent the Kasarani Stadium into frenzy with what surely was the final nail on Hussein’s coffin, racing to a through ball before lifting it over the keeper.

Despite the small stoppage that endured from the almost ugly trouble at the end, Gor held on for the vital points.

Congratulations! I have no doubt about our ability to finish off opponents at home, the elephant in the room is ….can we secure that vital away draw or win to secure quarter final stage ?

@Jakoyo even in your thread earlier you had prophesied a draw today but we conquered. There is no elephant the room as the kogalo boys are steadily improving daily and will put up a good fight in the coming away ties…

That game wasn’t for the faint hearted. We need to improve on our speed, close ball control, rapid transition and a serious ruthlessness when through on goal. The result is a welcome relief and we go praise to the Lord most high.

It’s possible to get a draw against Zamalek in Egypt but even this Algeria team was not all that strong so we can make it to the next level. Congratulations boys continue with the same spirit.

How i wished Benard Ondiek made use of this golden opportunity to make an impression. Am not sure he did himself any favours. Mustapha continues to run with the ball without seemingly knowing what he wants to do with it or whom he wants to give it to. Finally Batambuze dazzles but needs to cut off the occssional sloppiness. My only concerns. The rest were warriors to the death. That team ilikuwa na kisirani mob and we should expect to be thoroughly mistreated in Algeria.

Congratulations team k’ogalo. I was almost giving up, I couldn’t enjoy the football due to some stupid tactics employed by the opponent. I can imagine how players were frustrated.

Congratulation is in order for the team, TB, and fans although it looks a mockery of the numbers that you expect in the stadium for such a big match.
The NA Hussein Dey is a strong team both technically and tactically. They will definitely have themselves to blame for poor strategy of negative football by time wasting.
Never play an opponents game says the experts. Gor team almost fell into the Algerian’s trap by playing a very slow paced game in the second half which the NA H. Dey really need because of altitude. Back to TB for planning the winning strategy of the return match in the backdrop of the expected maltreatment.

  • I said in my previous post that we were already on our way to victory against Zemalek before Oliech was introduced and went further to say that let as focus and make the best use of who we have and today the boys have showed as that there was a team before Oliech , though going into the future , I pray that this issue of Oliech be amicably resolved , I say this because the hostile atmosphere we are going to encounter in Algiers and Cairo requires somebody of Oliech’s pedigree , but however it goes, the whole team should from today henceforth , be psychologically prepared for what will be more than just a
football game , it will be a war , literally .
Even if we are to use the Vojo phylosophy , the then harambee stars coach who led the team to Algeria and needing only a draw , he discarded all the known football formations like 4-3-3 , 4-4-2 , 4-5-1 and employed the 10-0-0 formation-He got the draw .
All we need is at least one away draw and then go for the jagular against Athletico here at home .
Congratulations team Kogalo , the EC , the TB and the fans .
NB: I have through all the media outlets and in non have I seen it reported that all the players were on thursday rewarded with $1000 each , ama good news from kogalo is not supposed to reported ?

@Teddty, in the traditional footballing in Kenya, there was no league when Gor or AFC was down. They made the hype that made the game enjoyable. I was thinking aloud asking myself questions and answering them myself [madness]. This ZICO man has become a professional assistant coach – understudying Ze-Maria, Dylan Kerr, OKtay and he is likely to understudy the next coach in a year’s time if the Gor’s bad manners is anything to go by. Can’t we even on a part time basis at a fee loan ZICO to AFC to rescue our mashemeji from going to the grass. You cannot learn forever, you must also put the learning into practice. Alternatively lets see Jasego@ the TB of AFC Leopards before we sing ‘Alleluia’.

Well done to the boys.We had already despaired until kahata popped up with a goal and Tuyisenge glossed it with a sumptuous second.

Hussein frustrated us for most of the game and they look like they will be a handful in Algiers.

But like has been mentioned here ,we need to go to Cairo and Algiers with our heads high and get a result.

Congrats team Gor but this chapter was not impressive. Gor need to up their game if they need to progress further. Slow football and the ‘piga mbele’ brand of football is a No, No.
All said and done Gor will have to manage the nxt two away matches to make progress. So far there is no indication that they can do this.
The team has potential and the coach needs to up his game.
    Congrats again.

Congrats Mayienga. But in victory let’s look at our weak areas. L Juma had a big stage fright you wonder how it will be away. But most importantly those two North Africa clashes we badly need Oliech as marking both him and Tuyisenge is a hard task for our opponents as compared to just dealing with Jausenge alone as the main threat

Congratulations team. Shakava as a last man has the height, but he lacks vision. If only he could use his height to map out the positionings of his teammates upfield, those desperate clearances would be very lethal as they would be passes and not just clearances.

  • As you celebrate , am already planning ahead , since it is not now far fetched to believe that we will be in the quarters , I wish to alert all of as that their is a transfer window in march, I assume that will be before our quarter final games and I believe reinforcements in areas we need strengthened must be done starting with the right full back , so that Philmon can go back to his instinctive position , the centre of the defence must also have a kogalocentric player , somebody with a contextual understanding of football , is multi dimensional I.e in the mould of Austin Oduor , Ogolla Kadir , Josiah Ougo or Josphat Murila and finally if we can get somebody to intelligently speed up out transition from defence to offence , somebody like Charles Otieno Engine or Ngolo Cante .
If we get the right personel in this window , I believe we can even start planning for the semis -our striking department looks sorted .

@Teddy sofaset, the window is only for KPL. The CAF window is already closed and that’s where we had Oliech and Kipkirui enlisted. Having said that we still need to recruit even if just for the local league. Withall these matches injuries and fatigue is bound to creep in.
The Angola team we have to be very careful with them. I saw how they took the game to Zamalek and are very solid defensively
