Gor Mahia go down to Petro Atletico

Short handed Gor Mahia fought gallantly but lost 2-1 to Angolan representatives Petro Atletico in their second CAF Confederations cup group stage match. Nicholas Kipkirui scored Gor Mahia’s goal in injury time.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Hosts Petro Atletico secured their first win of the Caf Confederation Cup group phase after a 2-0 win over Gor Mahia at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, Angola on Wednesday.

First half goals from Manguxi Ribiero and Tony Ribiero fired the Angolan champions to a 2-0 lead at the break. Gor improved after the break and Nicholas Kipkirui pulled one for K’Ogalo in added time, his second of the competition.

At a sparsely populated Estadio 11 de Novembro in the Angolan capital, the Kenyan champions, still beaming with confidence following that historic win over Zamalek last week, found themselves trailing by two goals at the break in this Group D encounter.

This as the 15-time Angolan champions scored the opener on 13-minutes after a sequence that left Gor defender Shafique Batambuze cursing himself following a lapse in decision making.

The Ugandan watched helplessly as his feeble pass towards Francis Kahata intercepted by Tiago Azulao in the visitors final third.

The recipient then dribbled forward and fed Manguxi Ribiero, who thereafter unleashed a first time right footed shot, which easily beat custodian Boniface Oluoch.

Hassan Oktay’s team was missing the services of two dependable forwards namely Jacques Tuyisenge and Dennis Oliech, who’d combined to undo Zamalek in the previous game of this competition.

In their stead, Oktay fielded Burundian Francis Mustafa who had three half chances in the opening 10 minutes but failed to capitalise on either, alongside Erisa Ssekisambu.

One of these chances resulted in the forward shooting straight at the welcoming arms of Petro custodian Elber.

The other was cleared for a fruitless corner as the Kenyan champions dominated the possession but the Angolans- with two Brazilian players in their ranks – proving more lethal.

The lanky Job missed a sitter for the host team when he failed to direct a shot into a yawning net but it ultimately didn’t matter as the second goal followed soon after.

In the run up, Danilson turned Joash Onyango inside out in the right hand side of the cross and whipped a cross ball which was connected into the back of the net via Anthony Ribiero’s forehead, in a passage of play which left Charles Momanyi seated on his backside.

Onyango had the best chance in the second half off Kahata’s corner kick. Elber proved equal to the task with a diving save to tip the ball over the bar.

Oktay brought on George Odhiambo and Kipkururi for Mustafa and Boniface Omondi but these changes proved insufficient to mastermind a crucial away point.

Good game in the second half and congratulations to the team but Jasego, I want you to confirm if you advised on the fielding of Mustafa in the first half or the first half starters because I don’t believe that you can recommend the fielding of Mustafa with kipkirui on the bench.

Even me with my little coaching knowledge, I can’t even put Mustafa on match day squad. Unless there is someone who pressurisses the technical bench that Mustafa must play. I think someone is earning half of the salary of Mustafa

Change is inevitable, unless players and TB get serious, wish we had a commanding coach of Loga’s instinct, the team is in successfully in a mess; on the fielding, as long as we’ll continue fielding names then the struggle for results will continue,,, majority of our 1st team are mediocre, expect for a few talented who are dedicated; fielding should be on merit not on names besides unfit players should not be fielded yet there are better options to produce results, we have a coach in octay shida ni influence too,,, I wonder how stupid and clueless the TB would filed ssekisambu mustafa and unfit Lawi then bring on bb instead of sammy who all along in past recent marches(hata vihiga na derby) hasnot been delivering ati aokoe jahazi, mmm as a miracle? never not in modern football, pardon my ignorance ,, I rest my case.

Bloggers first and foremost sorry and poleni sana that the team did not deliver. We used the 3-5-2 system i had earlier mentioned and it was overall good as the team shape was both intact/compact at the middle and ball possession decent. Our main undoing was a blunt attacking forward line as prior plans was for Oliech and Kipkirui to be the main firepower upfront. Attitude on some players was too casual leading to mistakes that caused both goals but we lost as a team just as when we win it is as a team. Head Coach has final discretion to field any player as they are all GM team members but of note though is that Mustafa and Ssekisambu keep falling short of expectations every time they get a chance to prove themselves. The two foreign slots they occupy could be used better as the local players we have are much better. Lawi played at 50% fitness having been down with malaria recently and i salute him. We could have done better as the opponent was not that much better than us despite being away. We live to fight another day.

What happened with Bonny 11, is it that he is being overplayed and is burning out. Why does Mustafa consistently get played, what does he do in training that warrants his constant fielding. Also you need to do something about the boots players wear, the rate at which they slip and fall is very worrying, they are not using proper equipment for the surface they play in

This Mustafa is the worst scandal ever to have happened in Gor recently. Whoever is receiving part of his wages is also a disgrace to Kogallo. The guy is just below average and should not associate with Gormahia at all.Suppose Kipkurui started the match Gor would have managed at least a draw.Anyway that’s now history. Sofapaka comes this weekend, that second half performance must be repeated for us to get three points.

Our import Francis Mustapha not only fell short of expectations, but he slipped and fell as usual in a game I had earlier said we could not afford any slips and falls.

The team tried what they could for today. The ref was very patient with Francis Mustapha.

Dan has just spoken out the thoughts I had immediately the line up hit the media. Mustapha has abdicated the role he was signed for and is now playing a role that Benard Ondiek can do far better with lots of ease. Why did we sign Eliud Lukewarm if we can’t field him? Shaffiq Batambuze impact is also no better than that of Godfrey Ochieng’.

That Nicholas Kipkirui goal is magical because it is what may take us to the next round. We remain top of the group for a while because of that goal. Congratulations boys. We are still in contention and should just make sure we win all our home matches.

Both Algeria and Atletico 3 points 3 goals for and 2goals againt 4. Zamalek with 3 points 3 goals for and 4 goals against now on 24th the team with the full house must do their best. Otherwise it was a good game. Congratulations

    1. Congratulations boys. You lost the only game you were destined to win away. 2. Gor Mahia is not and should not be a training college for Uganda Cranes or any other nation. If we buy a professional, let him fit the bill or else he leaves. Lets not import what is available locally. 3. Batambuze’s recovery after overlap is slow. Play a traditional no. 11 alongside batambuze to limit his movement’s upfront. 4. Just as has been pointed out by @Jasego, we lost as a team. Did any one play under old philosophy of man to man.The only exception was the goalkeeper and he was expected to be the Messiah when everyone has failed. Mbao fc against Gor being the latest example.
I must admit that Oluoch was a good goalkeeper just like Jerry Ja goal was.
    5. Finally, @ Jasego, is their reason why Joachim Oluoch not fitting into fullback 2 in your game plan. He did well against Esperance
You need Philomon in your defenssive mid. Just watch the zamalek game again to see his help in central defence under those desperate moments. Sorry I am not a coach, just day dreaming.

      • Jasego

@Oganjo we mulled over different formations and settled on a 3-5-2 with tall centre backs manning the rear guard. Petro Luanda attack typically from the wings and therefore we thought it unwise to put a makeshift fullback as they would overload that wing. It was better to pack the midfield to cut off their ball distribution to the flanks. Like i had earlier warned conceding an early goal is very detrimental to a team’s game plan and it cost us. The two foreign strikers i have nothing to say about them since even Sammy Onyango can deploy as a centre forward and would have partnered Kipkirui much better in an attacking duo…I made those thoughts known to TB

Gor went into this game weak mentally. The absence of their heroes in the person of Oliech and Tuiyisrmge affected them mentally.Fear is an important part of human beings but excess fear is dangerous just as much as lack of it. Reasonable fear inspired the team to beat Zamalek but lack of it drove the team to a loss against Rayon Sports, and a loss against Lobi Stars.Mental conditioning training is really required for the team. Gor is likely to win the remaining home matches but if the team is conditioned to believe that you can’t win away matches then a surprise loss or draw to a team like Pedro here at home is enough to do the damage. You must be strong both home and away. You played well but I don’t know whether the strategy was right just as was pointed out by one blogger @Tedy sofa set branch before your departure.Even if I don’t qualify to be Gor Mahia coach, I must say this: The benching of Kipkirui instead of Mustapha or Erisa was ridiculous, first substitution was fake, and second substitution was late. I still want to congratulate Boniface the goalkeeper that he served Gor well in the Yesteryears.

  • Barefoot Bandit

There is a time that we were very sure of a good result when playing away. Blackberry himself has bailed out with a brace away in Madagascar. That mental strength of winning away must be restored. I have lots reservations on Batambuze and still insist that Godfrey Ochieng’ is far better. As for our two imported strikers, I can only improve JTGJ’s suggestion. Let us make the ball boys or assistant kit managers.

There was no bounce-back win for Zamalek in matchday 2 of the CAF Confederation Cup group phase, with the Egyptian giants held 1-1 at home by Algeria’s NA Hussein Dey in a North African derby.

Combined with Petro Atletico’s 2-1 win over Gor Mahia, Hussein Dey have risen to the top of the log on four points, the Angolan and Kenyan clubs are tied for second on three points, while Zamalek are in the ‘wooden spoon’ position with just one point thus far.

    1. It was a big wasted opportunity.
    2. I wonder why our sons from the lake have become so fraudulent that they see Gor Mahia as a means of looting community resources. Big questions as to: Ssekisambu, Mustapha and even Batambuze… are we really serious that these guys were signed because they are better than our local players? Batambuze plays somehow well but is never better than all these local players.
    3. Gor Mahia need to be organized, this celotape thing aah.
    4. We will live to regret the cheap way we gave that game away. I remain fearful for our captain as a dependable center back!

  • The fact that their is a cap as to the number of foriegn players that a team can sign does not necessarily mean that if the cap is 5 then we have to by all means necessary we have to fill that gap and if we were to do that then it has to a talent that cannot be acquired locally .
Looking at the mediocre quality of the foriegners signed and whom am going to mention , it is absolutely clear that someone or somepeople at the EC are using this oppportunity for reasons that are anything but the good of the club and the motivation is obvious .
How for heavens sake is Ssesikambu in Gor Mahia his past fame notwithstanding , a guy with a first touch and ball control that is so horrible , a very basic at this level , and this Mustapha, is this guy even as half as good as Lokuwom , this guy would
would find it hard to get game time at Mount Kenya fc , Bartambuze , the whole essense behind overlapping is to deliver quality crosses into the boxes , otherwise what is the use of leaving a gap in your position that will be exploited to go and deliver nonsense upfront , good riddance to the one dimemsional Guikan .
    It is absolutely
irresponsible and unpatriotic to deny local players an opportunity for upward mobility because of petty corruption and from whense the likes of George Onyango Fundi , Bobby Ogolla , Owino kempes , Oluoch lule , Best Yoga , Allan Thigo , Oduwo Cobra ,Artillery Odembo etc came from , many more of such abound wasting away on Simba waragi in the villages , the selfless scouts who used to discover these talents having been replaced by tumbopreneurs and sorry excuses of a human beings.
Their is definitely pressure from some quarters on the TB to field some players to justify some recruitments but poor is poor , you cant force talent or perfomance where non exist and very soon the centre will cease holding .
I am one to accept results whichever way they come but if a result is as a result of us bungling what we got because some officials want to expose their mediocre to international scouts , then I forsee trouble , big trouble ahead because we are Gor Mahia and not Afc whose followers are contented with venting there frustrations on social media and radio -NONSENSE

Gor Mahia lost a golden opportunity. Why was the team so jaded. They posed no threat to the Angolans. This Mustapha and Sekisambu duo need to be dropped fast. They should be engaged only on KPL until they redeem themselves. Mustafa on the other hand is one big baby. why did he lunge onto the Angolan goalkeeper. This is one guy who has not idea what a team is. His long range shots are so feeble I almost cried in shame.
Kipkirui however should be mentioned for turning a half chance into a goal. Why did he not start.
My blame however goes to the coach. He let this slip thru his fingers. Did he try to figure out the mental state of the team. The goals by Petro clearly show that this team was half asleep. This team needs discipline on how to win matches and so far this Oktay seems to be an average European coach. It is shameful to see a European coach struggle against sides coached by Africans ie considering the kind of money they are paid. That match should not have been lost.

I also do have a problem with @jasego. He plans the trip, he plans the squad, he talks of financing of the team trips when money is lucking and he makes everything looks so perfect. He ensures his congregants are entertained and convinced of a victory before the game is even played, and how Gor is mighty and has the whole world under its feet, with beautiful and capable players. In the end when his lineup is not picked and Gor loose the congregants feel let down by the players, the coach and the blame game start. Half the players are benched, released, good for nothing etc because @jasego instructions were not followed. Then we begin to start looking for players who must join Gor “right now” and @jasego has a list of them from east to west then the office is blamed.

    Yawa yawa yawa

Gor will never be perfect, Gor will never be predictable, Gor will rise when it is supposed to fall, Gor will fail where it ought not to have failed. That’s the beauty of Gor. @OJ Omondi, order from above or hell, you are focus all your negative energies on Jasego. Do you want Jasego to marry your sisters? You have become different names like chameleon.

This guy called Jasego appears to be very intelligent and informed on football matters. Those criticizing him should be objective. I am personally impressed by what he does for GM.

Gilly Karibu. Thanks for early observation. Quite in order. Jasego is articulating issues very appropriately this some ” Bwoch” are raising the heat.

I think if we have outlived this site one of us can open a new wall and we as well blog on it. If Jasego is the central pole here and he irks some of us so much let him or her announce a new rival wall and we join or contribute on it.

@Nyakwar Ondenge unfortunately Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana left Rayon Sport in January for a European stint at an eastern european country i think slovakia or georgia and is therefore unavailable for us to go after to beef our attacking line….We shall explore other worthy strikers who can add the punch required in GM

Bloggers we have just landed at Jkia few minutes ago due to delays securing a direct flight back. We have 48 hours recovery time before taking on sofapaka at Afraha on sunday. I am witnessing many wonders on this wall with unwarranted and unrelenting attacks on my persona. Even characters called “orders from above” are now blogging and within seconds they revert back to their suspect pseudonyms such as OJomondi et al and their ilks. Me i have no fight with them actually am happy and smiling as life is good and we thank God for his favor upon K’Ogalo time and again and bringing the team safely back home…@Jamriambo,Jamigori,BB, Teddy,Dan Original and other great Gor Enthusiasts hope all is well with you plus all other objective well meaning bloggers. @gilly karibu sana our newest blogger and kind regards

Candidly to say no one has blamed the officiation. It was above par , we only lost due to our own ineptness a d carelessness in defending. All due to poor fielding from the coach. This is a match we should have won because the arabs will punish us heavily. We are in a precarious position subjecting us to go tooth and nail against the arabs. No more room for errors jasego. Emphasis on that a d Kktal must must must slay the arabs at kasarani. We know what awaits us in the north.Jasego don’t lose focus. It’s time for men to stand and be counted. I will reiterate ni Bwoch okia Gina Chuo wuoye.Ignore them.

I have keenly watched again and again the Match Btn GM and Petro. … and come up with the following observations: the goals GM conceded were thanks to one defender Momanyi who casually made a pass that was intercepted, also failed to protect the goal keeper from the header which led to the second goal 2) Poor goal keeping by one Boniface Oluoch coz both strike and the header wasn’t that lethal. If you people watched Zamalek Vs Hussein day, you will realize that Hussein was majorly saved by good goal keeping. Now my request to Jasego and the Technical Team , why field Boniface yet Fredrick Can do better, secondly was Momanyi the only option in the defence?

@Gilly You’re right and I highly recommend game time for fred, dont forget its our defence who expose them; though the best remedy would be a good goalkeeper trainer, hii tumesema sana, lets hope this time the Tb will heed to it though it wont also be suicidal to have more than two goalkeeper trainers at the team, on the defence; we cant over depend on the tutelage of Shakava to marn it if we’re destined to hold the game. not even the immature Momanyi can thrive in it. Trust me both shakava and momanyi thrive best when paired alongside either joash or joachim,,, the latter cant command the defense and are poor in reading and dictating opponents moves defencewise, and for such I highly recommend either joash or joachim to partner the two; a parnership of momanyi and shakava exposes the keeper mostly when we play without a natural DM, hata huyu mbish sidhani if he can equal the task atajaribu tu though currently he is our prefered RB thus no need to experiment him na let the team struggle on the RB, perhaps let the TB consider securing a natural modern box to box DM for the role and let mbish thrive at rb not forgeting to bring a natural RB come june but let mbish play the RB for the moment ju sidhani if wellington can equal the task best, blackberry is no better of late, very wasetful and loses posession easily, mm consider gametime for ondieki katikati and advance sammy na kachi for the wing role ikibidi, currently for the DM role in the absence of wendo cersidy to partner muguna kachi or lawi and have lethal wingers for crosses but DONT field unfit players like for lawi, and akina mustafa and ssekisambu juzi … kindly consider game time for godfrey at left back(remember the case of mercelo and sibomana the latter gelled well) joachim, cersidy ondieki sammy pascal eliud than overdependance on shakava joash lawi, and even fielding names at the expence of merit(ssekisambu and mustafa and even the sub of bb insttead of sammy then kip and ondieki for the useless ssekisambu and mustafa,, on my view) lasltly TB consider a new matuer dependable centerhalf to help hold onto a game under attacks from opponents, a combative modern CDM to protect the defence, a backap RB for mbish and perhaps a talented mature GK in place of odhoji, otherwise we live to fight another day but let us not continue repeatin the same mistake, last year againast Rayorn it was the RB and CDM kindly let the TB that, waol gi shida achiel achiel pilepile……… #onere Afraha.
