Gor Mahia hammer AFC 3-1

Scorers: Kipkirui & Tuyisenge and assist man: Muguna

Gor Mahia emerged victorious in the latest edition of the Mashemeji derby when they trounced their arch rivals 3-1. Nicholas Kipkirui struck twice and Jacque Tuyisenge scored the 3rd. Vincent Oburu pulled one back in the 85th minute.

Nicholas Kipkirui scored his first Mashemeji derby brace as Gor Mahia continued their march towards the 2018/2019 Sportpesa Premier League title with a convincing 3-1 victory over eternal rivals AFC Leopards at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

The match was marred by incidents of hooliganism when a section of AFC Leopards fans started uprooting seats after their team conceded the third goal.

But with the victory, Gor who now have 69 points, just need two points from their remaining three matches to lift their third consecutive title and unprecedented 18th league crown.

Kipkirui opened the scoring in the 26th minute before he capitalized on Leopards’ defensive blunder after being set up by Jacques Tuyisenge on the hour mark to double the lead.

Five minutes later, the former Zoo Kericho winger returned the favour after being involved in the Rwandese’ third goal before Vincent scored a late consolation goal for Ingwe, who last won the derby bragging rights in 2016.

“I expected AFC Leopards to give us a tough game, but unfortunately they didn’t show up. There was no competition at all. We should have won by a bigger margin. All the same, it’s not yet celebration time, we still have three matches to go,” said Gor coach Hassan Oktay.

But for his AFC counterpart Casa Mbungo, defensive errors cost them the match.

“Just like the other past matches, individual defensive blunder cost us in the derby. But we are on a rebuilding process, expect a different team next season,” said Mbungo.

Leopards threatened first in the third minute when David Ochieng released Isuza but goalkeeper Frederick Odhiambo came off his line to stop the former Mathare United man before Jacques Tuyisenge’s effort went wide on the opposite end.

Gor responded three minutes later when Nicholas Kipkirui latched on a loose ball but his effort went inches wide.

Paul Were then initiated a counter attacker but Joash Onyango did well to out-muscle Isuza in the box.

Leopards came close to breaking the deadlock in the tenth minute when Vincent Oburu rounded off his marker in the box only for his shot to go wide.

But Gor replied immediately but Tuyisenge failed to make contact to Muguna’s incisive cross after arriving late in the box before AFC goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade punched away Francis Kahata’s free kick.

Moments later, Were forced a fine save from Gor keeper before Kipkirui pounced on Tuyisenge’s rebound following Kahata’s delivery to give Gor the lead in the 26th minute.

In the 35th minute, Tuyisenge rounded off his marker after receiving a perfectly weighted pass from Kenneth Muguna, but the Rwandese’s shot missed target by a whisker.

Brian Marita could have restored parity in the 37th minute but Were’s cross outpaced him before he forced a fine save from the keeper.

Leopards almost equalized two minutes into the second half but Were’s well-curved free kick was deflected for a fruitless corner before Odhiambo pulled off a brilliant save to stop Marita’s free kick on the hour mark.

A minute later, Kipkirui capitalized on Said Tsuma’s defensive error to grab his double after being teed up by Tuyisenge.

Jacques Tuyisenge, who had been an integral part of all the goals, grabbed one of his own by tapping in easily past an overwhelmed goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade.

And just after the third goal, a section of frustrated Ingwe fans started uprooting seats, throwing them and empty bottles into the pitch forcing the referee to temporarily stop the game for five minutes.

A wayward pass from Joash Onyango in the last few minutes of the game saw Vincent Oburu intercept, before shooting straight home to sliver his team’s consolation goal.

Mara new contract for mbungo, players paid two months’salary ahead, 9 players rested purposely for the derby…..and you are beaten as usual. Shame on them. Were was pocketed by joash and Phile.and could not make his usual aimless runs.Only one point and we are crowned. Bandari has 16 goals while Gor has 33.They can’t reach us.

I expected better from Afc…but they dissapointed. Were wasn’t a threat at all…he was easily neutralised by both our fullbacks.

Cheche was very poor and had a bad game in midfield. It’s easy to see why Migne didn’t pick him for Afcon.

Godfrey Ochieng is growing into a good player and has been an able replacement for Batambuze.

    Well done boys..good show!!

I thought Francis Xavier and Tom Juma were very sure that Efusi would beat us! What happened? Where was their Eugene Mkangula?

  • Derby gani hi ? , a derby is supposed to be something akin to a bloodless bloodsport not a telemundo soap opera and the moment we allow some romantics to start peeling off the intense rivalry and 90minute hatred by renaming a bloodsport ati mashemeji derby is the moment we start losing it .
A derby stadium is not a lovers zone like uhuru park where Afc fans and Gor fans should mingle , taking selfies and smiling nonsensically with each other for the whole of that day , kila mutu acheze kwa mlango yao siku ya derby , hiyo mambo ya ushemeji ni upuzi .
And for the losing fans to leave the stadium smiling when they should be cursing or crying in dejection at how low their fortunes have sunk is despicable.
The sum total of my remarks is best explained by the fact that 4plus hours after the win over Afc , this blog has not yet hit 10comments , meaning the enthusiasm is waning , not only on the bloggosphere but even in attending matches including by our own fans , the net effect of all this is that deteriorating standards of Afc is affecting Gor and Kenyan football at large .
Otherwise a huge congratulations to Gor Mahia , we cant wait for the laggards to shape up , we need to accept that this situation isnt changing soon and whatever signings we make for next season must be STRICTLY for Caf in mind .

    • It would be a big mistake for Gor to wait for Afc or the other clubs to “wake up”. Gor mahia should move on and find ways of settling in the CAF scene. Some of these KPL clubs do not even have an African agenda. Clubs like Ulinzi, Tusker, KCB, Bandari are basically more comfortable in the EastAfrican scene, bring in CAF then the type of budget required might not be tolerated by their minders.
It’s obvious that the recent escapades in the CAF scene has made Gor “Superior” to KPL.
Hyping up Afc to offer some kind of opposition will not help, if Leopards wants to dwell on the floor, then that should be their prerogative.
Afc problems are mainly due to poor discipline from both officials and players.

Oktay continues to impress me. Zico must have given him a proper brief on how to deal with Ogwang’. With his tactics, Ingwe will have to wait longer.

On the playing unit i was quite impressed by Wendo who is slowly getting back to his best form. The other midfield generals also did well. Lastly Ochieng’ is starting to nail his number like Philemon.

    Congrats again boys.

Congratulations all the team, Ingwe must know people. Joash that is the kind of drunken pass that can make Migne think twice, you know what I mean. We were supposed to kausha these pretenders dry kabisa. Lastly remember it not over yet, Bandari is breathing right on our necks, Sofa has of course dropped by the way side

  • Such an emphatic win is worth congratulating, thanks boys and congratulations for giving us bragging rights.
All is well in the local league, let’s now prepare adequately for continentals. I know the coach says we are not yet there but signals are very strong. Let’s avoid problems that keep bedeviling us once in continentals.

  • And now that we have celebrated enough , what is our take on the team in general going forward using how each individual performed their role and how that performance carried the team or disorganised the team
    .
I will start by giving it to Francis Kahata and Muguna on how they linked up with the forwards and if that relationship can be sharpened in rhythm and speeded I.e the link between Kahata , Muguna , Tuisenge and Kipkirui .
In my opinion , the missing link in the forward line was Samuel Onyango , who must learn how to keep his game simple , anytime he got the ball , he wanted to do so many things at the same time , he wanted to over dribble , over run ending up losing the ball on numerous occasions and his passes were extremely wasteful , not reaching their intended targets -has a very poor situational awareness. .
Ernest Wendo- the position Wendo plays is one of the most sensitive areas in football , he is supposed to be the heart and the bridge between the back and the front and if we were playing a team with speedy players like from North Africa , we would have been killed in respect of the small mistakes he was commiting , the same way Gor punished Afcs silly mistakes . A position such as Wendo’s needs a player with a sublime first touch I.e ball control , the ability to jealously guard the ball , and the instincts to know what exactly to do with the ball immediately you get it , and most importantly how to move when the opponents have the ball or when the wingbacks are overlapping and at the level we are and where we need to go , he just doesnt measure up and I would hope that we sign a natural right wingback so that Philemon goes back to his natural position .
Philemon is a good player but he is better off in the middle , he dealt well with the new Paul Were , the old Paul Were would have exposed Philemon the way Christian Atsu did when Philemon almost had his spinal cord twisted courtesy of Atsu’s speed and sharp turns .
Joash Onyango played well and what happened to him is what normally happens when the game turns out to be too easy , the mind goes cold .
Shakava -well , if it was up to me to decide , I would look to do an upgrade to this position by bringing in someone who apart from being a good defender , is also good with the feet and vision , to improve on how we move the ball from the back and not just lashing it fwd , but for this to work , this new signing must not have Wendo infront of him .
Geoffrey Ochieng is showing glimses of Eric Ouma , lakini bado , however with more confidence and gametime and coupled with his high workrate and improvement on his delivery into the box Marcelo style , I believe he will come out fine .
Fred Jagoal , well , it was a well deserved holiday courtesy of a good backline and a confused clueless Leopard and even I would have come out unscathed too just like him.
Lastly , somebody needs to help Samuel Onyango realise what his strengths are because his jackness of all trades is making him a master of non .
I still call out to @Jasego and beseech him to drop as a hint of who are those six signings we are expecting , this is the season for that conversation .

  • Congratulations to the team and the Fans who always stand with the team for better for worse. I must say that the game was beautiful played and we enjoyed it. Within my own observation, I think that Gor won the match by playing very simple football. They never allowed themselves to pressure. You can recall many people saying that Gor had everything to loose and not their opponents. This could have put them under a lot of pressure. I qualify this by the goal mouth reactions. When Kirui pounced on the spilled ball, he since the ball was still in play, he basically remained alert and when the opportunity presented itself, he did the right thing. There was a great possibility of just sliding on to the ball which would have been a foul on the Goal Keeper.
The second goal was even more sweeter. No pressure simply used his intelligence. This is what football is all about.

I don’t know what is wrong with Gor mahia fans.Don’t you people know that Gor mahia fc plays continental football which most Kenya premier league clubs have not mastered. Did you people want AFC leopards to beat Gor mahia or what. With me I don’t see AFC leopards beating Gor mahia in the near future because we always continue to improve and that’s why many teams normally play defensively when playing against us. Remember that Sir Boby Williamson failed to beat AFC leopards during his time because we were still mediocre. Before the match was played,I predicted that we will emerge victorious with 1-3 s the score line because I knew there was no way AFC leopards could beat us with three first eleven international players in Joash, kahata, and Philemon and with My all time offensive midfielder in Kenneth Muguna dictating the pace of the game. Gor mahia pod pek

  • I would like to sincerely congratulate the team for sweet victory over Leopards Ingwe and this confirms that Gor Mahia is the best team in Kenya and one of the best in Africa. Gor Mahia was among the teams that reached quarter finals both in the CAF Champion League and CAF Confederations Cups – Play Offs.

I think we have several players such as Kipkirui, Kenneth Muguna and Samuel Onyango that deserve to be considered for AFCON Finals while Fredrick Odhiambo, Shakava, Bonface Omondi and Lawrence Juma should also form part of CHAN squad. These players have been overlooked by the Harambee Stars national team coach. Retrogressive coaches (Okumbi and Kimanzi) that are members of the technical team of the National team are misleading Coach Sebastian Migne.
