Gor Mahia hammer Young Africans 4-0
Gor Mahia recorded a spectacular 4-0 win over Young Africans in the 2018 CAF Confederations cup match at Kasarani on Wednesday. It is a creditable performance given all the on the field issues like fatigue and off the field issues (like payments) that Gor Mahia have been dealing with. Also impressive was the fact that Yanga were well rested and fit while Gor Mahia has had to deal with injury issues and player departures. The goals came via Tuyisenge, Guikan(2) and an own goal by Mwinyi of Yanga.

Gor Mahia put aside their off-the-pitch woes to dismantle visiting Young Africans SC (Yanga) of Tanzania 4-0 in their Caf Confederation Group D match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Wednesday.
Coming off a week where the club has been in disarray with reports of player revolt over unpaid bonuses, Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge set the tone right on 23 minutes at Kasarani with the opener before Ivorian forward Ephrem Guikan ended his goal duck with a second at the stroke of half-time to ensure the Kenyan champions head into the break 2-0 up.
Defender Haji Mwinyi then scored an own-goal to all but end Yanga’s hopes of a springing a surprise at Kasarani before Guikan added his second of the match and Gor’s fourth with a powerful left-footed shot five minutes from time.
Victory for K’Ogalo, their first in the money-spinning group stages takes them to five points and in second place behind Algerian side USM Algier (seven points), who secured a 2-1 win away to Rwandan side Rayon Sports in the other group match.
Gor made a very bright start to the match, while the opponents were on the back foot throughout the opening stages.
Guikan was put through by Francis Kahata in the 11th minute, but his left footed shot was parried by Yanga custodian Rostand Jehu with the rebound deflected out for a fruitless corner.
Six minutes later, Kahata’s deft cross into the box found Guikan and again the Ivorian failed to tap home from close range.
Yanga’s first sniff at goal came after 19 minutes through successive corners, but Gor defenders led by Skipper Harun Shakava were on the spot to clear their lines.
In the 22nd minute, Samuel Onyango burst forward from the right flank before releasing a grass cutter that Tuyisenge did well to skip away from his marker, before lashing his finish past a hapless Rostand for the opener.
Ibrahim Hajibu’s free kick from outside 18 won after Godfrey Walusimbi fouled Juma Mahadhi went over the bar in the 41st minute and four minutes later, Guikan repaid Kahata’s brilliant passing by beating the offside trap to double the scores.
“It was a performance of class from my players despite missing some key figures. They are ever fantastic and never let me down despite the problems off the pitch,” said Gor coach Dylan Kerr in a post-match interview.
“It’s a painful loss conceding four goals, but we failed to track our opponent’s moves, we go back to work on our weaknesses noted in this game,” said a remorseful Yanga coach Noel Mwandila after the game.

First congratulations to all involved. Big shout outs to Momanyi who is fast becoming the Rock of Gibraltar with a potent set piece threat at the other end of the field, Samuel’Daddy’ for waiting patiently and grabbing his chance beautifully, Mieno growing back to his old self each passing game and assisting like the Assistant Chief and finally my MOTM Guikan the DJ. How he scores such beautiful goals. Those who have always doubted him will continue eating humble pie kaka time songo….Now Mr Cersidy how do you come in to add more defensive depth and see out a comfortable scoreline but lose the ball at every available opportunity? And finally to Mustafa… he is a fantastic striker with undoubted talent that he has already shown but is in such a hurry to score. On two occasions he had an oportunity to pass to an unmarked player in the box but decided to have a go from distance without any success. Such confidence is admirable but the goals will definitely come so he needs to keep a cool head and things will be ok.

2) Skipping one tournament ati you are resting for another is useless. “Spying how Kogallo are playing in CECAFA so that you counter their play in CAF” is even more useless.

Congratulations taleam Gor Mahia for a splendid job done. That was truly a remarkable performance from team Gor Mahia. We must also hasten to add that Yanga has rapidly declined in the last one year. We must therefore not use this performance against them as a yardstick. We must stay focused and ready to confront any other team that will challenge our match to the semi finals and eventually the finals. In all likelihood, it looks as we will finish second in our group behind USM Algers of Algeria. This simply means we might meet Enyimba International Football Club from Nigeria in the Quarter Finals. We can go past the Nigerians if their performances in their group is taken into consideration. I can confirm that they are beatable, if we prepare adequately and cut off the off-season field shenanigans. Thank you Lord for this sweet victory against Yanga.

It is a waste of time to try and study Gor Mahia players. You wouldn’t know who will take the field in the next game. If they think it is easy, ask Yanga.

From my observation is that Yanga didn’t offer us much resistance. Could be due to the formation we had against them or their off-field issues. I have also observed that our back four is very solid irrespective of who plays there. Our mid , when Kahata and Mieno are there is also very assuring.
The areas of improvement are still the wings and attack. An example is that yesterday with some little bit of aggressiveness we could have scored not less than 6 goals. Our strikers are still selfsh and not much of team players. So may times Jausenge, Guikan, Ondiek , Mustapha and Onyango wanted to score when it was easier giving the ball to the team mate in the best position.
I also observed that Ondiek, Guikan and Onyango lose possession very easily. For a strong opponent this can be a problem.
I look forward to the Derby and with an on-fire Wafula available for selection I see a good game. Joash will also be available in case Shemejis opt for a physical game .
I also noticed that apart from Walu the rest of the players did not want to outrun their opponents. Onyango can usually run on the flank but yesterday there was no such run. Had we increased the pace a little bit and took the ball to them we could have scored more but I think with a ‘tough’ game in three days time I think the option was to conserve the energy

Tension at the Den as AFC Leopards coach Rodolfo Zapata considers options

Trouble is brewing at AFC Leopards with reports that Argentine Rodolfo Zapata could be on his way out of The Den.
Zapata, who joined the club in May, is considering his options, key among them, quitting the club after falling out with a section of the club officials.
Goal understands that the former Sunshine FC coach could handle his last game on Sunday when AFC Leopards takes Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby at Kasarani.
“The coach is not happy with what is going on at the club. He wants to get a new apartment but the top brass is not ready to offer the same.
“Also there are issues to do with the technical bench. Zapata thinks there are some forces that want him to fail,” a source close to the coach told Goal.
Interestingly, Zapata’s first match in Kenya was against Gor Mahia during the Super Cup staged in Nakuru.
Zapata took over from Tanzania Dennis Kitambi and he could become the third coach to have handled Ingwe in the last six months.
Robert Matano was fired early in the season before Kitambo took charge on an interim basis.
Ingwe are currently fifth on the log after 23 rounds of matches.

Exactly Dan. It was all about conserving energy. Remember the coach had instructed them not to be in a hurry to score. That’s what they did. Actually our game management approach worked so well yesterday and congratulations to the boys. I think it was just not Ondiek’s day yesterday because almost all his passes were. intercepted. Otherwise on a good day that guy can be terrific. We thank God for the centre referee who was very patient with Walusimbi.
Now for Efusi, our boys should work towards neutralizing their Nigerian striker called Oratomal. The guy is huge, strong and a big nuisance to defenders.

@Barefoot Bandit, actually Walu would have gotten a yellow card or two which would have barred him from the next game. He was erratic when the game started but mellowed down and was more offensive than defensive towards the end of the game. The ref was actually fair but there was a lineman who was not good with his offside calls. I like continental games, both set of players are not as rough as we witness in the local game.
