Gor Mahia head for Kisumu to take on Tusker

Abondo will once again be counted on for goals

Gor Mahia were in devastating form when they dispatched former league champions Sofapaka 2-0 in a KPL match on Wednesday. The win put aside any doubts about whether injuries were taking a toll on Kogalo players or whether they were losing motivation.

Gor Mahia will now head to Kisumu where they take on Tusker FC at Moi stadium.  Tusker as hosts, have opted to take the game to Kisumu in order to capitalize on branding and on gate collections which they expect to be high.

Gor Mahia for their part will be counting on their ‘home crowd’ to lift them past a Tusker side that is resurgent after the departure of Francis Kimanzi whom it was said was being sabotaged by the players. Following Kimanzi’s departure, Tusker were able to force a 2-2 draw with Gor Mahia and secure a 1-0 win over SoNy Sugar.

With Gor Mahia having won the league with several matches to spare, every team they play is now intent on ending the unbeaten record. Just as Sofapaka’s Felly Mulumba stated before the Wednesday match, Tusker’s Noah Wafula is now vowing to end the unbeaten run.

“Their unbeaten run is on the line and we will attack it,” . The league is already gone and sadly we cannot make it to second place but we will still go hard to ensure we can get to win the remaining two matches we have. They will want to retain their status but we will give them a very hard time.  We showed in the Top 8 that we can compete with them and we will be looking forward to facing them again this weekend,” he said to supersport.com

After the 2-2 draw with Tusker, coach Frank Nuttall complained that his side was unable to play their game due to the poorly maintained playing surface at Afraha. That issue will be resolved because Moi stadium Kisumu has a relatively new articial turf that was donated by FIFA. And Kisumu has generally been a good hunting ground for Gor Mahia. Indeed Tusker will find to their dismay that playing Gor Mahia at Afraha is vastly different from playing them in Kisumu amid that raucous crowd.
