Gor Mahia held by Western Stima 1-1

Wendo is congratulated by team-mates

Gor Mahia’s quest to reach the top spot of the Sportpesa Premier League was tripped up on Wednesday when a determined Western Stima held them 1-1. Gor Mahia scored in the first half through Ernest Wendo. Western Stima replied in the 53rd minute.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Gor Mahia missed the chance to go top of the SportPesa Premier League table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Western Stima at the Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday.

Eernest Wendo had fired the champions ahead in the 30th minute with a first time strike off a Dennis Oliech assist, but the visitors hit back in the second half with Vincent Odongo restoring parity at the hour mark with a long range shot.

In between, Gor’s Nicholas Kipkirui, Olirch and Jacques Tuyisenge missed a host of chances and the visitors held on.

K’Ogalo are now in second spot with26 points from 13 matches, two behind leaders Bandari.

Gor coach Hassan Oktay was disappointed with the two dropped points.

“It wasn’t our best game. The referee stopped the game for nine minutes and their goalkeeper was on the ground for eight minutes. ” We dropped two points We conceded a goal from 40 yards, we have a goalkeeping problem,” he said.

But his opposite number Paul Ogai hit back, claiming his side were by far the better team in this game, and that the Kenyan champions were lucky to have picked a point.”He (Oktay) is lucky to get a point and should just keep quiet, we lost two great chances to kill the game, we were the better side.”

After an early period of dominance by the hosts, Ernest Wendo stabbed home a Dennis Oliech’s pass to hand Oktay’s charges the lead in this game after 30 minutes.

But when the Green Army – and their excited fans at the venue – seemed to be cruising, Stima rallied back and scored the goal of the game via Vincent Odongo. He rifled home a shot from 35-yards, easily beating an embarrassed Gor custodian Fredrick Onyango at his near post in the process.

Onyango was standing in for the off-colour Boniface Oluoch.Jacques Tuyisenge, who seemed to be playing with some bit of discomfort, headed a Philemon Otieno cross over the opponent’s bar with only custodian Samwel Onyango to beat earlier on.

Then Dennis Oliech scuffed a shot which went narrowly wide moments later. And in the second half, super sub-Nicholas Kipkurui failed to find the back of the with a looping shot with Fredrick Onyango well beaten. Oktay though elected to comment on the several stoppages caused by supposed injuries to the Western Stima goalkeeper. “He (Oktay) is lucky to get a point and should just keep quiet, we lost two great chances to kill the game, we were the better side.”

Very good reality check from W/Stima before CAF on Sunday.
Hope the team can recover and deliver on Sunday since KPL is still a marathon but winning CAF home matches are crucial.

I dont talk KPL matches ( it is given) so once again took time off my busy schedule to assess how the boys have faired. Here are my comments.
    1. Transitioning from defence to offence is a challenge no matter the line up. I think we have to buy 2 box to box midfielders the likes of baba kizito. when is the next transfer window ?
    2. Scoring from set pieces (free kicks) is something we need to learn and learn fast. I see us squandering set pieces for the last 5 games without solution. I think we should now try other players as kahata and batambuze simply are not good enough. can muguna take over the mantle ?
    3. We MUST win convincingly against Hussein Day as a draw or loss means we are OUT regardless of other outcomes otherwise it will be simba like situation where head to head will decide who qualifies.. We have to believe that we can get an away draw in either of our remaining away matches (Egypt or Algeria ) or reduce away losses to 1 goal margin. I have a strong feeling it will be a draw.

    Goodluck on Sunday !

Lets learn to attack facts and not personalities , lets avoid nationalising our personal frustrations and broken dreams .
@Jakoyo , on this , am with you 100% , our transition from defence to attack is non existent and I dont see any personnel as currently constituted who can change this , I hope am wrong .
All in all , I will take the one point since am appreciative of the fact that it is difficult for any team to deal with such congestion in fixtures with the sole exception of Pep Guardiola’s Man City-Depth manenos .

Congratulations to the team for the one point earned in the match. We appreciate the point earned and we hope that the next league match we shall win. I also hope that my preferred goalkeeper as someone said will continue to be in goal against Hussein day and am sure that he will keep a clean sheet. The fact that he conceded a long range shot does not make him a bad goalkeeper and I know that he has gained alot from the shot and will make him better in the subsequent matches. In a match where our strikers did means that we were lucky enough to to have a point. Now that match is gone and we can only prepare for the next match which is against Husein day.

Wendo linked up with Dennis Oliech and Jacques Tuyisenge for the opener, but Vincent Odongo restored parity for the visitors just five minutes after the restart.

Oliech blew away five clear chances and for sure the experienced striker will take a bigger portion of the blame for the result.

Bloggers i have been away and will revert on friday morning at team camp in preparation for NA Hussein Dey.

Of concern to me is the above statement on Oliech blowing 5 clear chances on a day i had invited Coach Sebastian Migne with gusto to go watch him and Kipkirui and re-think their inclusion in the Chan squad. Have i been made to swallow my words and will i need to hide when i meet Migne on Sunday at kasarani?

Musymo how was the tactical and technical approach to the game and specifically how was Geoffrey Ochieng? Joash got injured yesterday and Shakava was injured during the Sofapaka match but is set to do light training today. Will it be a situation again without the two on Sunday?

The result shows that we are human afterall. Playing after every three days at that level at some point something has to give, and in this case it is Joash. I hope he will be fit on time.
On missing chances the positive thing is that we are creating the chances in the first place which is a good thing.
On Batambuze resting that is one good thing as the lad has been playing so often. For our alternative keeper that was a mistake that should not be done at the big stage but we hope the lesson has been learnt. One thing I know is that W. Stima has only lost one game, a narrow 1-2 loss to Bandari in Mombasa. This shows that we have a stable team from Kisumu

All the same I wish the injured QR and we meet at Kasa and collect our three points though it might not be as easy as i have said it. Hussein now has the belief after holding group favourites, Zamalek in Egypt and also after the Zamalek Chief has branded as a ‘weak’ team

    • Jasego

@Dan i think Sunday calls for a very tactical approach to the game we cannot afford to let NA Hussein Dey believe they have a chance here like Zamalek almost did. It is a tough run for the players but those 3 points must be secured. The Goalkeeping dept has a problem and even coach Oktay has finally admitted. I tried pushing for signing of a GK but that was thought surplus to requirements. Be as it may now that even Fred has started howlers then i think let’s just use all the 3 Goalkeeper’s at GM intermittently including Shaban Odhoji who is feeling left out in the cold for too long. He can man the sticks in the shield games and some league games against teams like mount kenya…vihiga and nzoia

    Congratulation boys.
Getting this trophy will be exciting and a time may come we start doing the mathematics like we did in 2012 and 2016. I know we are not used to that but this time round, this competition is likely to go down to the last game.
@ Jakoyo, I concur with your prescription on the midfield issues. However, @Gor Mahia, the tendency for quick fix, seeing solutions to be out there sometimes come with frustration for the hard working personnel already in the team. Just a small question, is there a coach’s or TBs role in molding players to give them what they want. More recently, Philomon came in gor as a midfielder, and now the die is cast – he is a FB2 for gor Harambee stars. Wafula Innocent was here as a winger and left as a compact FB2. All his school days, Ochola Jua Kali was known in FB2 and came to gor and became hero in FB3. Gor has many players, including good midfielders with speed, ball manners and football intelligence and some are even starved of play time.It is not lost to me how the great Mieno of Tusker was different from great Mieno of Gor Mahia, how the great Agwanda ‘Jowi’ of Sofapaka that used to tear the Gor defense was different from the great Agwanda of Gor. The list is long and it can’t be complete without mentioning the great mid fielder from Brazil and that one from Cameroun as well as our own great Ssekisambu and Mustafa from Uganda and Rwanda respectively. Please, I am not against new recruits, but start from within. Now that the coach has decried of goalkeeping problems may be the EC will listen and the cartels can swing into action.

  • I dont know in what context our Goalie conceded apart from what I have read that it was a short from 30plus yards, but it kept me wondering , what if that concession was made by Bony Oluoch ? , and this is not to excuse Bony but rather to highlight the fact that suggestions we emotionally give in the heat of the moment are just that -feelings.
A case in point is when we screamed our lungs off “we dont want Bony , we want Odhonji “, then we were given Odhonji and even before the ninety minutes were over , we were again screaming “No Fred , no elections “(sic).
Taken to its logical conclusion , all our agitations point to a sub conscious affirmation that we are short in the goalkeeping department but even if
that be so and at the risk of online lynching , it is my opinion that Bony is still the best from amongst what we have and like I have read somewhere Sebastian Migne seems to concur having attested to the fact that in his pecking order Bony is after Matasi , ahead of the Farouk Shikalo some of as non footballing experts have been screaming for .
Fred Odhiambo though has a very bright future ahead of him , as for Odhonji , in the spirit of the handshake and building bridges , I will reserve my opinion .

My take on the game@teddy,I have noticed that matches are generally tricky before and after a continental fixture.Players tread cautiously before to avoid injury before the big stage and are tired after that game.It happens to Man Utd,Chelsea, Arsenal and others,so it’s difficult to expect 100%.However,with our squad quality and depth we all expect better results.and yesterday’s game was one where we should have collected the 3 points, tough as it was!!

…have come to note that bonny knows how to distribute balls quite well and most of the time he wins one on one with advancing strikers. but is beaten with long range shots quite often.does he have problems with his eyesight.or is a matter of reaction timing.what should be done to increase his reaction time. odhoji is good with aerial balls but also has low reaction time low balls also is his problem, fred can be a good golie if he has the confidence of bonnie and work on aerial shots on far post

Jasego, tell the coach oktay that professional coaches build players and not destroy them as he did yesterday by saying that we have a goalkeeping problem to the media. If he will lose the dressings room, he will not win even a single match until he will be fired. The fact that Fredrick conceded a long range shot does not make him a bad goalkeeper. How many times have Boni conceded cheap goals. I respect you alot but you don’t have to say that Fredrick is bad because of conceding one goal out of many clean sheets that he has kept. I told you that Fredrick needs to be given play time to make him better and if you are really a good technical director, then you should consider him for the match against Hussein day. Otherwise we did not lose and we should only encourage players who did not perform to our expectations rather than condemning them. Even Denis Onyango of mamelodi sundowns conceded the cheapest goal which denied the team the chance to go top but pitso it’s in a new defended him

@Michael Ogolo i did condemn Fredrick the keeper at all. I only seconded that the GK dept is lacking in terms of personnel and said even the sidelined Odhoji should still be given playtime since even since he was sidelined permanently we have not stopped wailing over that dept. The luo adage punda chalre is one that summarizes our 3 Goalkeepers at GM in terms of conceding with Fred being the least error prone though…We will encourage them as we await the transfer window

Barca drew against Lyon, Liverpool drew against Munchen yesterday Atltco beat Juve. These things happen in football contrary to fans’ expectations. Let’s not put too much pressure on any player coz nobody is perfect in any specialization. We should also be cautious when attacking Bonny or any player because mistakes do happen. Mourinoh used to talk negatively about his players in man u.The players then deliberately performed poorly to show their disapproval. What if Gor keepers do the same as a reaction to Oktay’s recent comment on them? A league competition is a process not an event, we still have 21 league matches to play, let’s be patient.

The branches then , in kisumu and Mombasa then would meet the full cost of the team’s accomodation , I dont know about now .
As happens now , even then fans and players who were berieved would be honoured to be given a befitting sendoff and never ever did i even once witness the
sensenseless and primitive brand damaging theatrics we witness .
Then, as of now , we had travelling fans , but at no time did I ever experienced any jaliero on those trip harassing everybody on the highway and lastly , the harassment of businessmen and residents in towns we visit like happened at kakwacha in kisumu , I never ever saw that .

I have keenly followed Simba SC home matches in the champions league at the National Stadium in Dar and the atmosphere is electric! The stadium is always almost overflowing!

When I lived in Busia years ago we had a very strong K’Ogalo Fans Branch and we used to hire Mawingo Buses to attend Gor championship matches in Nairobi and I remember hosting Gor in Busia and we hosted them and provided for all their needs from our pockets! Other branches including Bungoma, Mombasa, Kisumu and others would do the same! We often contributed monies to support the team and this spirit needs to continue and be strengthened! Greater fiscal accountability and an aggressive outreach program by the K’Ogalo leadership will help invigorate the branches network which will greatly be beneficial to our beloved club!

And It’s was not only a howler but a funny goal that we conceded from over 40 yards. The three keepers are all prone to blunders be it Bonny or Odhoji so let the TB make the right decision without undue pressure, favor or hatred.

Even Denis Onyango of mamelodi sundowns conceded the cheapest goal against polokwane city in absa premier league and made them lose the chance to go top but pitso mosimane defended him so I don’t think that pitso will bench him bcoz of that. Remember that he is Africa number one. It’s only my wish that he be given a chance against Hussein dey and I can guarantee you that he will keep a clean sheet when defenders will be on top of their game defensively. But I can’t guarantee a clean sheet with other players in goal if you compare the three goalkeepers when we are playing a continental match at home.

  • My wish for Sunday’s game is Bonny , I say so in so far as the dynamics of selecting a team is involved, my opinion can just be that , a wish .
Secondly , it is partially true that Fred may eventually benefit from the howler in terms of experience but I said partially because in a lot of the same situation, the opposite may be the case in the short term moreso in high pressure clubs like Gor Mahia , a good example that suffices is Loris Karius in the Uefa finals Liverpool vs R.Madrid , he has since been sold.
There is a possibilty that Fred may be an exception to my narrative but the stakes involved are to high on Sunday to allow me the luxury of taking that risk , however focussing solely on the goalkeepers for the goals risks making as blind to a fact that not all the goals we have conceded are down to the Goalkeepers , it is a fact that most of the goals could be attributed to defensive confusions not forgetting the defensive midfield .
When it comes to a high pressure game like Sunday’s , there is no substitution for experience moreso where the gap between the two goalkeepers is minimal BUT LET AS FIX OUR DEFENSIVE LEAKAGES .
