Gor Mahia started their 2018-2019 CAF Champions league campaign with a scoreless draw away to Aigle Noir of Burundi.

Despite availing fifteen players instead of the maximum required number of eighteen, Gor Mahia Sunday battled to a scoreless draw with Burundi’s Aigle Noir FC in a preliminary round clash of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League at the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura.
Overall, the Kenyan team’s defence was barely threatened in the entire game.
In fact, forward Nicholas Kipkirui was inches away from winning it for the visitors on the hour mark. However, his effort off the right boot after a well-worked corner routine came off the bar.
Considering home ground advantage, this outcome places the Kenyan champions in pole position to progress to the next round of this money-spinning competition ahead of the return leg clash in Nairobi on August 24.
K’Ogalo needs just a win in that game set for the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani to advance to the first round.
But the Burundian champions will eliminate the Kenyan side if they can pull off a scoring draw of any kind in that game.
This game meanwhile, was not only Gor Mahia’s competitive game this season but also marked a debut for new coach Steve Polack.
The coach, in turn, handed competitive debuts to Tanzania goalkeeper David Mapigano, the custodian’s compatriot Dickson Ambundo and former Sony Sugar midfielder Tobias Otieno.
“I think it went well because we were never in danger of losing,” explained Polack in his post-match comments.
“We were short of bodies but we found a way to go around that. It’s just half-time in this tie and now that we have a feel of what the opposition is capable of, we will prepare for them at home.”
The Kenyan team travelled with 15 players following a hitch in the registration process with the Caf.
This occurrence left Polack with a reserve bench consisting only three outfield players.
Gor are expected back home on Monday evening.

I imagine 250,000 fully paid members at 1k per year (remember some will give more) to the will make the club afford a sleeping coach for short distance travel, a fully equipped modern gym and a club that apartment (so that there is no player risking being kicked out for rent arrears) and later on a playing ground. We must think hard along this line. For officials who think this will stop them from eating, imagine u eat more from a full pocket than from a lean one. It’s high time gor players started owning vits for starters.
How do we get this done. We have great ideas but zero action.
Don’t use a big number, 10,000 fans only paying 100 shillings per month translates to 120 million per year and that is achievable. We only need organization to bring a platform like friends of Gor mahia and 10,000 people will be found. Am ready

Bloggers I Must correct a few inconsistencies in this previous updated blog. Gor Mahia had initially submitted a list of 25 names in the first Caf registration window but Haroun Shakava left and Francis Mustapha was released. The remaining 23 names were updated accordingly in the second allowable window for making any changes to the list. We went on to add new signings Gislein Yikpe Gnamian, Francis Afriyie and Maurice Ojwang who are all time-barred under late registration for this preliminary round. Dennis Oliech, Boniface Oluoch and Curtis Wekesa are injured while Earnest Wendo is suspended from bookings of last season Caf matches. Therefore Gor had only 15 eligible players from the 23 Caf squad to travel to Burundi and it had nothing to do with Tickets delay from the Ministry. Still we put on a good away show and drew 0-0. My plea is come fill the stadium in droves on 25th as we dispatch Aigle Noir mercilessly at Fortress Kasarani…God bless Mighty Mayienga

I believe our EC is not sitting back waitong for Govt assistance. We can use the mass following to generate some funds for the team. Just like Yanga and Simba are doing we can have a digital registration process where we can register using our mobiles. Members can then choose from a list of branches of which this sote can be a branch, just like we have facebook branch. We can then use a bank just like is it Simba or Yanga is using Equity in Tz. The member then gets a debit/membership card for which he/she can pay his membership as well as match ticket or merchandise purchase. This will assist in e-ticketing as well as generating tevenue for the club. The tickets will then be slightly cheaper say 25% off depending on the membership level. e.g Platinum, Gold and Silver. Platinum guys can be life members paying 100k for life, Gold 10k per year and Silver 1k per annum. The cards literally cost less than 100 bob basing it on the loyalty cards we get from various establishments.
We literally need to move forward. There was such an initiative with Chase Bank some tines back but whatever happened i can’t tell. These cards can actually be registered and given out during a match day.
We better try and fail than fail without trying. Once we are stable financially the sponsors will just comè knocking and we will not negotiate from a point of weakness but will also set our minimum expectations.
My thoughts
The time is right for this idea to be turned into a real. We have to start from somewhere. I am totally in for this.

@Ingo. You will be spoilt for a choice….Shemeji. There are tens of beautiful hotels in Kisumu. Acacia premier and Grand Royal swiss are the leading hotels in the region. Also the most expensive joints in town with std rooms going for approximately Kshs. 15,000.00. However Sovereign, Vic, Imperial express, Vittoria suites and Jumuia Hotels are also very good hotels with Accommodation fees slightly less than Kshs. 10,000.00 per night.

I agree with Sam Odiedo and Dan Original’s suggestions above. All loving supporters, NOT fans(over the years we have had only fans who shout from the roof tops about what ails the team, but not providing any solutions), I mean supporters, we should all come out and support team by taking up membership. Let thinkers come out and EC be ready to receive advice on way around this membership drive. Let’s not forget innovative gate and merchandise/brand management.

It only needs more positive and action-oriented supporters. It only needs more people with your kind of mindset. People who are positive and ready to make the first move like you.
Over the years I have realized that this matter of membership is not only elusive, but also very emotive. It is emotive to the extent that whenever it is raised in this blog site, great minds like Teddy Sofaset will cut short their sabbatical and come out with guns blazing. Their fury and combative demeanor is enough to send bloggers like Barefoot Bandit who have no spine to fight in social media scampering for safety. It is emotive to the extent that even very innocent and harmless queries on the membership registration process by the likes of Dawaplus and others with brilliant ideas on e-registration and e-ticketing are dismissed as lazy layabouts, insincere and wishful thinkers.
We continue witnessing strong adjectives being unleashed on anyone who dares inquire about Gor Mahia membership registration process year in year out yet I think it would be simpler and a win-win for Gor Mahia and us all, if we could just direct those who want to register, on how to go about it. They say in Kiswahili that kuuliza ndiyo kujua njia. How much would one lose by giving direction to a fan who wants to become a supporter? That person who adopts a ‘stand-off-ish’ attitude when such enquiries are made is denying Gor Mahia revenue just like those who bribe their ways into the stadium. They are no better than those who are evidently capable of paying stadium entry fees, but tell the stewards to ‘bed mos’ when reminded that they cannot enter the VIP section without a VIP ticket.
Let us do the simple things first: if one has an elaborate knowledge of the Gor Mahia registration process even as archaic and analogue as it is currently, he should let go of his pride and lay it bare in this site. He shall have made a great personal contribution that will resuscitate the failing heart of K’Ogalo.

@Dan Original, I agree with you. E-registration will reach more people than manual registration. One can easily register through his mobile phone while seated in his house.
@Dan original i also agree with u. We have been reduced to last minutes strugglers. No long term financial stability. Often with begging bowls. Our players go without salaries and allowances time and again. Air tickets and accomodation for away matches are full of hiccups. We manage our affairs by leaps and bounds. Sad enough, there is no activism, no fresh ideas, no leadership from the officials to inspire mass registration as a means to strengthen our financial fortunes. Maybe they preffer the status quo. We need to be dynamic and progressive. Not same place, same problems year in, year out. Thats why i support the idea of using our massive fun base to provide financial muscle. Dont fear corruption because we will have to enforce a clause in the constitution allowing for indipendent audit after or between a given time. And every penny accounted for. Let the green army fill studiums and register enmass as members. we can bring the change we desire. We must stop being cry babies. We got to act now.

My worry is when all these good suggestions will go unheeded as usual. Let’s pray hard that this membership matter is taken up robustly and immediately, in fact for me I would not at this point look back and bring lame excuses about accountability. I will put my money in there to support my team.

I am prompted to say this based on the little I know about Gor Mahia and Burundian teams. Below is an account of what transpired in 1983, long before the whole of our current squad was born:
Gor Mahia vs Burundi’s Vital O in 1983
In 1983, Gor Mahia started the year off at the CECAFA cup which was held in Zanzibar. The team failed to make it beyond the 1st round. On the continental scene, they faced Vital O of Burundi in the first round. They won the first leg 2-1 in Bujumbura with goals from John Bobby Ogola and Abdalla Shebe. However in the second leg in Nairobi, Gor Mahia inexplicably lost 3-0 at home. Irate fans protested and called for the return of former chairman David Opar.
Following the match, Gearge Ayuka, Charles Ondiek, Mike Ogolla ‘Machine’ and Andrew Obunga who were serving suspensions were expelled from the club after having been accused by club chairman Zack Mbori of inciting players to poor performance. It also emerged that some club players had been bribed by officials of Ugandan side Sports Club Villa during the CECAFA cup held in Zanzibar in January.
From the highlights of the match as i saw it the Burundi team is quite good and likewise we had/have a very good keeper. We are stull blunt going fprward and still quite a number of stray passes which should not b3 happenong at this level. Lots of composure needed from the mid to attack. We are still wasteful with the final pass.

I am putting on my helmet before i make my comment. The registration of supporters is a very good thing and I want to say here that it is not the ultimate solution to the club’s financial. It is not even 10% of what the club needs. I challenge any one here to tell us a successful club here in Africa without a serious sponsor. How about Europe? Gor Mahia needs a serious sponsor, anything short of that we shall be cheating ourselves. I read with dismay when some of us quote Yanga and Simba as being bankrolled by supporters’. That is a blatant lie. Both teams are sponsored by Sportpesa. Magufuli Government is working very closely with Sportpesa and recently the National Stadium was renovated courtesy of Sportpesa. Our Government is killing sports by fighting sponsors like Sportpesa. World over betting companies are driving football, why does Kenya think that they are so special. Betting/Gambling is an old trade that cannot just be eliminated like that. Casino’s that are frequented by the rich have existed since time immemorial. Does it mean only the rich should gamble?

Guys , it’s true that a sponsor is very vital for our team but we still need members who can contribute to the team coffers. Barca still needs their 90k stadium full despite their many sponsors and so is Real and even Manu. And their tickets are still pricey even for their dear fans.That is what we are advocating here, that we become members of the team with benefits. Sponsors also find it easy tp associate with teams who have a record of financially stability and discipline.
Did u know that Al-ahyl, one of the great clubs in egypt have their developnent and investment companies registered in the stock market. And that the fans are shareholders. Meaning it is the fans who built this investments no donor, sponsor or betting firms for that matter. Time we started to think and stop this dependency syndrom.
@George Odiwa, Al-Ahly are currently sponsored by WE Telecom of Egypt. They have previously enjoyed sponsorship from Vodafone. I just don’t know why we want to paint pictures that are not there.

Some 24 hours after Dan’s brilliant suggestion that K’Ogalo should borrow a leaf from the Simbas and Yangas, billionaire Mohammed Devji, the chairman of Simba SC gave a very detailed and inciteful interview to the BBC today morning on what it has taken Simba to turn around it’s fortunes.
He says that he made up his mind to invest heavily in Simba after a candid discussion with presidents of Egyptian teams. Initially he was met with serious opposition when he tried to introduce the same in Simba, but was finally successful when Simba was financially in the red. He seized that opportunity and injected billions to hold 90% of shares in the club. He was then elected chairman.
It is noteworthy that he says that Gor Mahia and some teams from Malawi have recently approached Simba to learn best practice for purposes of implementing the same.
