Gor Mahia hold Young Africans

Gor Mahia, held Tanzanian champions, Young Africans of Tanzania 1-1 in a friendly match played at the Sheikh Amri Abeid stadium in Arusha, Tanzania. The trip was fully paid for by Yanga who were using the match to prepare for the CECAFA cup that is being held in Tanzania starting this weekend.

Gor Mahia were playing without coach Zedekiah Otieno “Zico” who is away with the national team. they were also without key players Eric Masika, Jerim Onyango, Teddy Akumu, Edwin Lavatsa, Musa Mohammed, Kevin Omondi and Collins Okoth who are also away with the senior and under 23 national teams.

The match availed an opportunity for new signings like Hadji Mwachoki, Demonde Selenga and Wycliff Ochomo to gel with the team. The first half was evenly contested and ended up goalless. Yanga were the first to break the deadlock via Ghanaian signing Kenneth Asamoah. Dan Makori scored the equalizing goal for Gor Mahia.

Last year Gor Mahia without several key players beat Simba 3-1 in another friendly, that was played at the national stadium in Dar es Salaam. Gor Mahia fans will be happy to see the team return to the golden days when the name “Gor Mahia” was a household name all over Tanzania.

Historically, matches between Gor Mahia and the Tanzanian giants have been tight affairs. Circa 1984, Gor Mahia played Yanga in the first round of the African champions cup. In the lineup playing midfield linkman for Gor Mahia was new signing Abbas Khamis Magongo who haunted his fellow Tanzanians with his sleek touches. John Okello “Zangi” scored for Gor Mahia as they held Yanga 1-1 in the first leg. In the return leg in Nairobi, a late goal by Sammy Onyango “Jogoo” saw Gor Mahia through to the second round. The following year, Gor Mahia tied 1-1 with Simba on their way to winning the CECAFA cup. It is the last time Gor Mahia won that cup. Gor Mahia last played in the CECAFA cup in 1996 and fans today are eager to see the club return to those glory days.

  • Great game kogalo to draw away at Yanga, always a special game against these Tanzanian sides (Yanga and Simba). Anyone knows what the line up in central defence was? With Masika, Musa and Viera away with the National team?

Congrats boys we are in the right track. . Next season we are in Africa and we want to avoid that embarrassment of APR in 2009. However, hii story ya kulipiwa lipiwa bills is embarrassing. We are Luos after all and we pick up our own tab at the bar (Obama speak).

Thank you for constant updates..I Just have a suggestion, its very sad that our website has no quick and daily updates..It should not just be when we play we discuss our Beloved Gor mahia…But we can also make our players involved by featuring them on one on one commentary, feature what they do on daily basis away from the club..Let us know who are our players and what they love doing…This will help us support them more…in and out of the club..
NOTE:Food for thought we should be leaders on how to market and strategise on Branding..We should be unvieling our Players on Press Conference bana,It helps in catching the eyes of Sponsors and Club Ratings…It also Kills Rumuor about who and who has been signed

Fred Tambo, there only three answers YES, YES and YES. We need such progressive ideas. Who said Supersport are back? Whether or not they are back, SAY NO TO HOOLIGANISM.

    Reply
  • Fred, Ja Thir gi as I have always said you can get more upto date info on GM on such sites as KPL and Michezo africa than on the GM site itself. What a disgrace! I wonder if we should cut and paste from those sites to this. I expect this site to be featuring the players, officials, branches, fans etc etc. GM being a big club should have a new item featured everyday. On hooliganism there are no two ways about it. It has to end whether we are provoked or not. Maturity is basically how you react under provocation. Can someone give us some romour about the bus project now that the facts are very rare? Last time I heard the Chairman saying that the bus will arrive two months after the Tuzo deal. Must be very long two months! We are ready to contribute the shortfall. Just let us know

I subscribe to Gor Mahia website more than I do To Nation,Standard,Supersport,Skysports and even ESPN…But Its always stale News,I was Suprised to learn That AFC Leopards had a ceremony to unviel their players and even rollout a programme to sell their replica Jersey. This was a letdown on our Marketing Department because I only learnt of Selenga and likes of Mwachoki on their appearance while playing agaisnt Chemelil in Nakuru…..This Head starts from our Rivals on strategies is not Right Gor We lead others follow but we have to be proactive with our Ideas……We have both the brain power and The will of Green Movement to dictate Marketing In Kenya andf Sponsors will be fighting for our contracts…Let us engage also in Community out reach programmes that our Platyers and Team can be involved in off season to Build that relation/Connection amounst the Gor Family Both Players and fans,so we can win more admirers outside the field,……Yawa Lets Break Our Barriers I know Self reliance on our Gate collection is our Pride but Lets be more expansive,so we can avoid talks like what Ziko said on Bob Mungalia’s Interest in playing for Gor..He said “Mungalia is not possible because the money involved is siu huge”,,,This should not be the case,,,as we should be able to sign quality players willing to play for us because, our Goal is to Win The league,,then our focus should be now to be a step a head in building an Experience side to fight it out with the likes of Zamalek,,Essparence….That is just my Thought

Hi bro tambo and others in the GM family, every group success begins with accountable leadership, many times we’ve requested our branch heads to give us info or news from the hqtrs its been very funny..how many times have we members asked for the annual budget..you wonder for how long do people want to brag about shouldering the team when its not possible to disclose the entire club income and any deficit said to be funded by them..you saw the funny matatu the team used to naks when we came in sleek machines..it reveals to us the inside office..simply interesting! It pains to forsee that we’ll live with these for a long long time, terrible.

  • THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX MR OMONDI OMOLLO ( contributor no. 7)

I wish to take great exception from the sentiments expressed by my friend Mr Omondi Omollo about kogalo being a luo club. Nothing is further from the truth. But to reduce such a big club that have outgrown itself from a comunity club to be a very successful professional club in East Africa.

I wish to remind Omollo that he will be supporting the club with very selfish motives such as negative ethnicity. What you make of us who support kogalo? Think outside the box bwana. A kikuyu from muranga, a mswahili from the coast, a maasai and all other kenyans can choose to support GM. Likewise a luo from ugenya can choose to support thika united.

Let us de- ethnicise football. Back to the international friendly between kogalo & yanga, this was a well deserved draw. It is going to provide our club with the much needed practise as we prepare for the most gruelling second leg of 2011 KPL fixtures.

Let us tomorrow at nyayo to cheer our national team.

nice opportunity for the new signing and the entire team to showcase what Gor Mahia is made of

yes, with a big voice, let us know as stakeholders of GM, what has been met in terms of the clubs budget, what has not and the deficit.
It will be prudent for whoever is concerned to tell us the financial position of the Club.

  • omondi omollo contributor no.8 kindly take note that you are a big disappointment/embarassment to the Gor Mahia brand and family,as much KOGALO may have a name from the lake side and many fans there, it has cut across the board all over East Africa. The club is known all over fly to Lamu now in a KOGALO shirt and you will agree with me that it is the most recognisable jersey in the KPL and therefore i would like to advise Omondi to start adjusting to the fact KOGALO is huge and that its a brand that i know ,whos penetration Omondi does nt understand, and therefore advise him to desist from tribalising the brand and in the process stop interfering with the value of the football powerhouse.THINK GOR MAHIA THINK BIG BUSINESS coz you aint seen anything yet!

Contributors No. 18, 19 and 25, there is nothing tribalistic in stating the obvious. Barcelona is a Catalan team. FACT. that doesn’t mean that we do not welcome fans from other parts of the country. It means we identify with our origins. Why do we do pre-season tour of Luo-Nyanza and not Western? You can not take a club away from its fan base otherwise you end up with a franchise scenario like Tusker/Kenya Breweries which despite their enormous success in Kenya Football are without a fan base.

ps. Altelico Bilbao and their cantera policy does not even play non Basque players So gentlemen cool your horses

A lesson in history for the Johnny Come Latelies, Gor Mahia came into existence in 1968 as a merger of Luo United and Luo Sports Club (also known as Luo Stars).

    I REST MY CASE.

  • OOmllo this is not Spain or those big examples you wanna give our scenario is very different from the examples you are giving as they dont capture the Kenyan Situation. And i think you are trying to teach Gor Mahia history which is alredy on the site just back off the tribalism thing and justify it.

    Reply
  • If Barca is a Catalan club as indicated here then why do we kill our brothers/sisters and some of us commit suicide in Kenya when they lose?. The fact that Gor started as stated above should not justify us tribalising it. The team is now international and if OOmollo goes to the stadium he will find a good number of Gor fans from diverse areas and that’s what we want to promote. It’s already happening in the playing unit and nobody has an issue with it as that’s the way of growing the club. The diversity brings with it fresh ideas. I stand to be corrected but what I feel is missing from the club is enterpreneurship. There is alot of goodwill for the club to make money from merchandise like calendars, car stickers, umbrellas, jerseys, magazine etc but we are currently only relying on the ticket charges and TUZO sponsorship. All we have to do is to emulate a club like Real Madrid whose jerseys are redesigned every year and you can get merchandise as diverse bedsheets, watches etc. Maybe we need to have the sporting wing(currently football and in future other sports) and a commercial wing under the banner Gor Mahia. That’s what teams like Zamalek have. So that’s why I think we need that diversity in Gor. Some of us could be good in footbal matters while others in management to take the club to greater heights. Clubs like Asante Kotoko started like Gor for the Asantes in Ghana but are now big businesses. It’s time we started to think outside the box. I’m sure we can do it.

Tis good contributions we have here..my take is if something is good it remains so and more so with improvement it grows even better!

Mine is to say there’s everything we require for the business we talk about all the time but just how? even buying a jersey is quite a tideous job! again you can still see fake jerseys around town. They normally report funny gate collection figures yet you’ll be told leaders are shouldering the club!

And so i pray..Dear God ..one day soon..Kindly help us in GM Fraternity to work and get leaders who are accountable and interested in Community development so that this Institution misused shall become a big commercial venture that will play a logical part in all available social development opportunity including but not limited to Employment, health, education, entertainment

My friends of the comment 29 and 30, lets get some home-truths out first. Gor Mahia FC is not and has never been a business. A business is an entity formed with the overriding objective to return a profit. We are an society registered under the Societies Act with an object of being a football club. Admittedly we may need to generate revenue to be meet our expenses but we will never pay dividends to our members.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are not limited liability companies. they are owned by members, like Gor Mahia, the so-called “socios.”

Secondly there is nothing wrong to be tribalistic in football. This issue continues to be the subject of much debate even in Europe. (See http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110425153639AAq5A9p)

Celtic (Catholic) vs. Rangers (Protestant) Manchester United (Lancashire) vs. Leeds (Yorkshire) Boca Juniors (Working Class)vs. River Plate (Middle class)

Unlike you gentlemen is i do not see the need to shed the association of Gor Mahia with the Luo tribe as a precursor to its supposed success. After all even Barcelona does not have a website in Luo but some of you still cheer them on!

Hi omondiomollo its good you understand the business establishment well n so are we: what i mean with a comercial venture is a range businesses run to propagate the core function of GM which are as follows: 1. To pay players well, not the meagre tens curent. 2. To acquire or build a stadium. 3. To secure stable earnings to sustain the 1st point. Others 4. All orgntions of late are into charity on health, edu etc why not GM, the funds cud come from business. 5. Many pple contributed towds the bus not for dividends or profits the money can still come from biz. 6. Neva deny that arsenals, reals n the rest are not societies that own businesses. Lastly why r we so irked when pple sugest biz n marvel when told of someone purpotedly shouldering the club? So sad.

  • @omondiomollo i like the way u are informed but my feeling is ur initial comment tho well intended will leave some bad taste to some pple. We all know the history of the club whats important now is to focus on what can bring synergy so that the club can prosper. Anyway so far the office has done great but i still feel they need to give us their strategic plan. Where do they want the club to be in the nxt 5 years? Do they intend to put up a secretariate? Do they intend to put up an office cum mechardize shop? Mr Rachier my chairman u are in the right time in history make all of us walk straight, chin high, proud and tall. Its possible God bless.

Who runs Gor Mahia the Followers or the Management cz as far as am concerned the Websites are owned and operated by individuals. how i wish GM officials cud tap into soome of the talented followers in different fields that can raise the clubs profile far and beyond…lack of marketing strategy making us a sleeping giant…lack of recruitment coz say all the millions of GM followers who..n this is a fact are well financial paid say Kshs. 1000 as membership registration that wud be in 100 of millions and sales from Merchandising wud also generate millions, add ticket sales, TV revenue and sponsorship this is astronomical figures but kwanza TUANGAMIZE HOOLIGANISM kwa uwanja!!!!!!!
