Gor Mahia lose to Bandari 2-1

Gor Mahia’s 2018-2019 season started on a sour note as they went down 2-1 to Bandari at Mbaraki on Saturday. New signing Nicholas Kipkirui scored for Kogalo.

Additional reporting from the Nation

Champions Gor Mahia’s title defence got underway on a losing note as they went down 2-1 away to Bandari in their opening SportPesa Premier League match at the Mbaraki Stadium, Mombasa on Saturday.

William Wardi and David Kingatua gave the dockers a 2-0 lead, before new signing Nicholas Kipkirui pulled a goal back for K’Ogalo.

However, it was not enough as Bandari, who finished in second place last season, held on for precious points leaving the champions to lick their wounds in a packed match watched by among others, Kenya Ports Authority managing director Daniel Mamduku.

The dockers enjoyed the early exchanges, while Gor Mahia, who were playing a few hours after arriving from Malawi, took control of the last quarter of the game when they literally camped at Bandari’s goalmouth in search of an elusive equaliser.

William Wadri scored the match opener for Bandari on the stroke of halftime via a firm header from a well weighted Yema Muama cross.

David Kingatua made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when he pounced on back pass by Philemon Otieno to goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch to score from close range.

Gor substitute and new signing Nicholas Kipkurui, who had just come in for Francis Mustapha, scored the consolation goal for Gor Mahia in the 75th minute from a goalmouth melee.

“We dominated the game but missed several clear scoring chances, while Bandari created only three chances two of which they scored,” new Gor Mahia Turkish coach Hassan Oktay said after the match

Bandari team manager Wilson Ogutu was however happy with the results, saying that they will build on this performance to ensure they achieve their target of wining the league.

“We played as a team with players following the coaches instruction to the letter. We just want to build on this going forward,” Ogutu said.

Why did we concede two goals and why did our first attacking duo of Guikan and Mustapha do nothing infront of goal? This is how mid-table teams begin their campaigns. This is an offset of problems that began towards the end of last season being carried forward. We Must sign a Striker and Creative Midfielder asap. Zico must also be relegated to where he belongs he cant coach GM in Head Coach capacity. Those sentiments of we played well and lost are useless for they win nothing in the world of football…

  • There Is A Stampede By Good Players To Leave The Team. Someone Has Just Said That Gor Mahia Lacks Team Spirit Because Some Players Want Out. Yet Some Bloggers Here Can Only Rant About Zico. Surely It Is Rachiers Ineptitude That Is Driving Players Out Of Gor. Simply Put, Gor Does Not Appreciate Players Thats Why The Team Lacks Balance.
But Of Course Rachier Is The Best Chairman Ever Without Whom Gor Can Never Prosper (gospel according to cartels).

The only good striker we had today was Kipkurui. What can Zico do if the team has no strikers? Let us turn the heat on Aduda to get us two quality strikers. In today’s match Zico just played his assistant role. Oktal was in charge throughout. The boys fought to stop the first goal which was much against the run of play. The second goal was a back pass blunder by Philemon Otieno. Oluoch had to come and dive on the ball outside 18. Had it not been a goal, Oluoch was to get a red card.

We lost today’s match because of 5 problems:
    1. Guikan
    2. Kahata
    3. Mustapha
    4. Lack of strikers
    5. Travelling to Msa a day earlier and spending in Msa before the match.

Nicholas Kipkirui is a good striker but for some unknown reasons it seems his name was not forwaded to CAF to enable him play in the champions league.

We have not found a perfect replacement for Meddie Kagere.

Surely, this is not zico like scoreline neither is it zico like lineup. Who is fooling who ? . For those who know football, i cant remember the last time zico conceded 2 goals in a match. The last two games tell a story, let Zico be confirmed as head coach ASAP.

Secondly, Who is in control of the team ? Oktal, a 5th division amateur training coach….. until we give zico complete control of the team i.e training, first team selection and substitution I don’t see the situation changing. I predict ‘ kichapo’ against Nigerians.

This so called imposter of a coach called oktal, oknyal gor mahia. Never, impossible to confirm this guy, it will never happen…let him go back to 5th division football!!

Kerr recommended Guikan to be released, the person who brought him back,”Yesu neni”
This season without proper way forward,Gor are candidates for relegation.
    Passengers currently in Gor,
    Kahata
    Guikan
    Mustaffa
    Phillemon
    Wendo

I am usually critical of Wendo, but I must say that today he deserved to wear the K’Ogalo jersey. He did not even deserve the yellow card that he got. I think referees now believe that a match is never over until Wendo is carded. They believe that a yellow is his right. Philemon’s rare blunder does not make him a passenger. Our coaches should allow this boy back to his midfield role. I believe we have natural fullbacks. If the Algerians watch Kahata’s performance today, I am sure they will think again before rushing for his signature. Total crap.

My good friend relax. I have learned to respect your forecasts, but I assure you Gor Mahia was the better team. We dominated the midfield throughout, won all the 50-50 and second balls and dominated both halves. Those goals Bandari scored we’re out of mere luck. Our weakness is in finishing. If we can get rid of these pseudostrikers burdening us now and replace with actual strikers then teams will cry. The onus is on Aduda to give us two lethal strikers.

Mr. Barefoot, I agree with you yes but in football possession does not win a game!!! Games are won with goals!! One thing we all have to agree is that we need to recall Karim in defense and offload the likes of Mustapha and Guikan!! Even this Ssekisambu I wasn’t impressed much by his game but time will tell.

@Barefoot Bandit, I agree with you 100%. Some of us (NOT ALL) base our comments on feelings and the results without watching the games. Today’s game was to be won by us and we were the better side but Bandari did all they could to ensure we didn’t get the elusive win. Striking is still a problem. That doesn’t not mean that the sky is about to fall. For one thing Oktay was in charge and not Zico. Some of us have a serious issue with Zico yet now he is part of Gor. Without him even Oktal might not succeed. So let’s show some respect.
Kipkirui will provide the force we need upfront that Guikan and Mustafa are not providing currently. I have also noticed that my good friend Jasego thinks that Guikan needs to be given more time but not Zico, just because he spotted him and recommended him to Gor,
From what I saw the fighting spirit is back and that coupled with the positive fans we will conquer .
As of now the best we can do if we truly love Gor is to offer our support to the TB and playing unit, Saying Bonnie ohh, Guikan Ohh, Mustafa Ohh will not help. Bonnie got us to the next stage of CAFCL yet when he was in today’s list some of us grumbled. Looks like that is our nature. I would hate to go the Ingwe way of thinking that the solution is out there. For us Guikan, Mustafa and Erissa will get us to the promised land. And like Kosero says there is no reason for alarm when only one game has been played. We usually win with almost 15 points even when we lose some games. We have a game on Wednesday to gauge our readiness fitness-wise and we wish the team the best.
I doubt whether since the Bullets game we have even had time to practise

Striking our main undoing!! Today we all witnessed how our own built “Calabar Junior” tormented our “poor” strikers in defense, we should expect the same from Wafula, Karim and Onguso!! Has Joachim been released?? Somebody to update me on all released players please.

Having watched today’s game I see nothing to be alarmed about. Moreover Zico was not in charge but Oktal was. As of now it’s too early to judge him but our fans need also to exercise patience when it comes to matters football. Do we remember the issue of the wasted 4m KES? Do we remember when PAcMan was too old? Odhoji was at one time the best? I still believe that once we know how to play Guikan and Mustafa we will be OK. In soccer there is usually no guarantee that the new players will fit in the way Batambuze has.

So my friends @Jakoyo and @Jasego this thing of Zico this Zico that is not helping us. @Jasego you recommended Erissa and Guikan but not heard you pointing out their weaknesses. Let’s all support Kogal as Kosero would say, the roof/sky has not fallen for us to pull hairs

@dan original, the issue of zico this, zico has been discussed by the committee….it does help since if the head is dead, the rest of the body (team) follows suit. Until this issue of the head is resolved ( i.e zico is confirmed) , we shall struggle with consistency.

On the striking font, I hope to propose two top notch strikers to the powers that be РDjuma Nizeyimana of SC Kiyovu and yu̱us sentamu of fk Tirana but that will depend if the club agrees to club Рswap djuma with Mustafa and offload guikan for sentamu.

If it true that Gor Mahia is still chasing Rayon’s Bonfis Caleb Bimenyimana then it better be expedited immediately and with urgency. Now Zico is denying that there’s no striking shortage in Gor Mahia. His pedestrian argument is that yesterday’s consolation goal was scored by a striker. Either a man living in denial or simply clueless.

Kahata,Guikan & Kip played yet they’ve either opted out/are not registered for CCL. Our best GK,Fred, is being sidelined coz of “ubeste” a sure career killer. The quality of our TB&players steadily fades with each passing year all because of an inept EC.

I guess I too would not be motivated about the prospect of getting into the lucrative stages of the CCL since I still remember very clearly what happened at that stage last time. Once we get there is there anything that will stop the script from re-enacting itself? What will stop the EC from raising their allowances at the expense of players’ welfare? What will prevent the free-for-all scramble for the loot once the boys sweat their blood to the group stages?

On a different note, If Zico is satisfied with the one goal we scored yesterday because “it was scored by a striker”, then now I understand why his wins in the teams he has coached have always been one nil.

George, some of us on this wall watched Gor at its lowest. When players could even exchange, of all things, sheenguards and a player or two would have mismatched jerseys. Even the glamour days of the 80s we had issues but the way we solved them is how it mattered. We had ‘mature’ and ‘senior’ citizens who could go to the stadium to enjoy the game as well as reign in on the youngsters who were impatient and could cause chaos at any time they felt things were not going their way.
During our resurgence in the 90s there was a time we couldn’t score for quite a long spell despite playing some of the best soccer. The coach was either Siang’a or Zico. When Ngwa, the Camerounian ,scored he actually cried and that shows just how much he wanted to score and the team to win.
So to me it’s very early to press the panic buttons but yes we need to evaluate or striking . and by the way midfielders like Scholes and the former Chelsea mid (Now Derby Coach) used to score and it should not be only the strikers. Without defending anyone, even Lukaku and formerly Drogba used to have their dry ‘spells’.
And by the way when a fan takes their life because of the game then here is a problem somewhere. You can’t feel much worse than the person who was in the field and lost, unless you lost some bet. I have seen Real Madrid fans applauding Gaucho yet at that point their team was heavily walloped

What happened and what Im about to say may be annoying to some but the truth is that it has happened. Accept and move on. Two good points to note from these happenings: 1. The unwarranted pressure to win the league unbeaten is gone. 2. Many bloggers on this platform insinuated that they were tired of winning; that kenyan league was weak and GM should play elsewhere. The good news is that winning the league this season which is a must for GM will not be a walk in the park. Many of the top 10 teams were busy on transfer window and we are likely to see a stronger league than last year. My only prayer is that Efusi sorts out their TB issues because whenever Ingwe and GM are high the Kenyan league tends to be strongew. Finally, we must appreciate that any top notch striker we yawn for on this site must fit our style of play or the team adopts to his style. Evidence is all over on most players lost to other leagues and they fail to click. My point of departure from many is that GM has many good strikers and may need to re – examine the mid Field and seamless partnership like the ones that existed between Olunga and Kagere, Kagere a
nd Tuiyisenge , Okoth Gatuso and Aucho etc.

@Nyakwar Oganjo Rahiti, you must either be one f the most sober person on this site or you played or have a high understanding of football. Most of us in this site just want results even when everything is pointing south. If the playing unit is not functioning like a machine due to low morale even the results will show. These players were last year duped when they reached the group stages of CAFCC, what is different this time around? Like you said a striker like Kip will require cross balls that require sprinting but not Guikan, Mustafa is not the physical striker so expecting him to bulldoze his way through a group of defenders is not his type of play. For Tuyisenge aerial balls is his thing or occasionally bulldozing. For Kagere he was a poacher and the occasional pass behind the defenders was his type. For those who were lucky to watch Dawo will know that aerial balls was his game, low balls no. In EPL despite so nmany goals Henry rarely scored headers. So while Zamalek and Jua Kal were feeding Dao with the balls he needed who is doing that for our strikers. Guikan has a lethal shot but ho sets it up for him when appropriate?

I would rather finish mid table this year but make it to group stages in CAF champions league – that should be the goal, not 3 points & bragging rights over suitcase teams…If last year is to go by, trying to do both is suicide, moreover given the dinosaurs’ actions in the EC

@Dan Original, thanks bro for the complement. Your analysis of our strikers is spot on. Guikan would be a goal scoring machine if play style, midfielders and co striker knows how to set him up. He is weak in dribling which has been the major cause of his injuries. Tuiyisenge has strong arial power but the club is releasing or weakening wing capabilities. Another thing do our team has only one strategy and tactics for all the oponents? I noticed USM Algiers had difficulties dealing with crosses from the flanks(just check any serious attack we made) but GM fiocussed on central attack where the Algiers were very strong. One thing that we nust aoplaud is that kenyan local coaches are slow in learning the tricks but they cetainly learn and counter it. Their learning curve for new GM coaches is roughly 14 months. Logarusic whipped every team but when his tricks nolinger worked, his behaviour bacame questionable. Williamson departed to National team in good time. Natal was not going to have a free ride in 2016 – the tricks had been mastered. Ze Maria was going to loose the league in two consective years. I can bet Kerr was not going to find it easy so he left early to retain his earlier record.
