Gor Mahia must wage strong Public Relations push

When Gor Mahia returned from Tanzania after their CECAFA club cup campaign coach Frank Nuttall called upon sponsors to come on board to bolster the club financially.

“I’m disappointed that we did not win but pleased with the effort of the players, the staff and the management of the club. The success we had is because everyone played their part,” he said. “What we now need is for sponsors to come on board; whichever sponsor is out there should come and help the team,” he said.

In the final, Gor Mahia came up against a side in Azam that has a much stronger financial position due to its affiliation with the parent company Azam media. The club has facilities that have been described by the FIFA website as world class. They have a stadium of their own in which they host league matches and a team bus as good as any in Europe.

The mere fact that they have their own stadium is a huge advantage: It means players can spend more time on the training ground sharpening their skills unlike Gor Mahia who often can only rent City stadium for 4 hours a day and still have to pay through the nose.

To reach the level that Azam has reach financially, Gor Mahia will need to find other means of raising revenue. Of late two KPL teams have obtained lucrative sponsorship deals: City Stars penned a deal worth Ksh 81 million over three years while Mathare penned a deal in the region of Ksh 85 million. Both deals are well above the deal Gor Mahia signed with Tuzo in 2012 and well above the deals that AFC signed with Mumias Sugar.

Both teams have no fan base and City stars are battling relegation and will likely be in the lower leagues next season. One would think that a sponsor would want to associate with Gor Mahia, a high flying team  that is known all over Africa, has a rich history a huge fan base and a winning tradition.

But sponsorship is not forthcoming for a number of reasons. The first is hooliganism. The second is politics. This means that Gor Mahia will need to wage a strong public relations push to overcome these factors.

Partner with a sponsor to combat hooliganism.

In order to combat hooliganism, security would need to be enhanced. Gor Mahia could propose a deal to corporates such that a significant percentage of the sponsorship money goes towards providing security at each game.

As much as 10% of any sponsorship deal should go towards additional security.

Gor Mahia would partner with the sponsoring company to pay for additional police including plain clothes policemen to sit among the fans. And additional police to protect the areas surrounding the stadium. This would apply for both home and away matches. Due to poor public relations Gor Mahia cannot afford another hooliganism event even when they are not responsible for security.

An arrangement that bolsters security at a stadium and its environs will give a potential sponsor peace of mind.

Gor Mahia must strongly appeal to the government to play its part by arresting hooligans. Whereas Gor Mahia can to a certain extent control fans within the stadia, they cannot do anything when fans are rioting say in Muthurwa.

Emphasize Neutrality

Secondly Gor Mahia will need to make a conscious effort to appear non-partisan. In a country with such deep political divisions, Gor Mahia cannot be seen as being an arm of any political party. Former club CEO Lordvick Aduda cited this issue as a major stumbling block whenever he and Rachier visited corporate types to seek sponsorship.

Hold onto players

Gor Mahia will need to bolster its financial position if it hopes to hold ionto key players in the short term.

Striker Michael Olunga who has been the subject of much speculation has said he is currently focused on helping the club retain the league title.

“I have a contract with Gor and I don’t know much about the offers,” said the Geospatial Engineering student. “I just want to concentrate on our target and aim for the league.” he said to the Nation.

Following his CECAFA cup exploits, Olunga drew interest from all three top Tanzanian sides plus Bidvest of South Africa. It remains to be seen how much longer the club can hold onto him.

  • On the issue of hooliganism ……..Football is for the masses and every club in this planet has a problem with hooliganism . How do you deal with it ?? Enforcement of stadium rules – No bhang, No beer, No idling within the perimeters of the stadium. Self policing is the solution.

On the issue of politics …..Yes for long Kogallo has been associated with Luos and Raila. This is also a problem across the world . Barcelona is associated with the catalans, Bayer Munich with the bavarians, Manchested united with the british e.t.c How do you deal with it ? ?? Make Kogallo brand a regional brand and recruit smartly from East Africa and local communities. KPL will also have to change rules that treat east african citizens as local players .

Goodluck Kogallo and thanks for the Dar Es Salaam exploits, the whole region can now reckon.

  • On top of that @jakoyo, accountability, accountability and accountability. There has to be proper documentation of every cents that is spent and available to the sponsors if there is one.

Gor Mahia constitution also needs to be reviewed in order to curb bloated EC. Some of the positions are liability and draining club financially

Why haven’t I heard someone suggesting an improved deal and contract extension for one Frank Nutall. Ama they are waiting till he threatens to leave!! He has brought us good results and must be rewarded by an improved deal and a contract extension!! Don’t ask me where the money will come from. We now have a SACCO that all said would be a solution to our problems.

  • What needs to be understood in dreaming up solutions to Kenyan football is that we have our creative and sports industry in the gutter and that we need to build football from the grassroots.
Gor Mahia should not even be talking about stadiums when they play without standardized kitting. Think long term and produce a strategy for this. The leadership should organize forums to have this conversation and the existing members must take initiative to lead this charge.

  • Dealing with hooligans is not hard as it sounds. Gor fan base is simply divided into branches and they tend to sit together during matches.
Solution: Gor EC shud call a meeting for all branches at city stadium. Get one gud PR guy n one gud business ethics speaker to talk to this mass. The problem will certainly disappear. Contact me if you have no idea on what to talk about. Gor mahia’s main problem is hooliganism more than anything else. The sponsors r merely sending a messg to GOR… continue stonning ppl n u will be broke. Look at it this way…even if city stars have no crowd…the crowd will come while they play kogalo. Thats gud enough. So if someone is givin 85mill for two matches, how much more is he willing to give or could he give fo 32 matches.

The maker of Thèse script is full of hidden agenda n they ve decided to create scapegoat in the Name of holiganism n i think Thèse article is based on academic theory rather than business theory. Worldwide sponsors have been sponsoring clubs irrespective of hooligasm case in study is simba sc,yanga fc,algerian clubs, tunisian clubs, zambian clubs, russian clubs List is endless n thèse clubs ve committed houliganism. Even in times of Jesus Christ There was politics so u cannot blâme Raila odinga now That he is not in power, kenyans like to associates themselves with people in power even if they are gaining nothing rather than going for issues based. Raila has done big to gor imagine the bread concept. The let down is gor office if the current supplier of good bread is unable to expand why cant they negotiate for additional bakers they can approach Tosti bakers, united bakers, festive bakers, supaloaf bakers n others. By doing so they might get minimum 3million a month. Imagine you cant get the bread in Kisii, nyamira, homabay, migori, siaya, parts of kisumu,Nairobi, mombasa. So politics is good n part of human life it dépends how u view it. unless gor office decide to cleanse their hands n soul n accept accountability all good initiative Will go to garbage pit n poverty Will be order of the day in gor. imagine how people of central mock us people of nyanza That we cant run a club each n every time begging statehouse. Now we dont know whether they paid players with the little they got from cecafa. bloggers their so many sponsors out There ready to come n sponsor gor but they fear being victimised by the government or gova mafias through KRA,police, nema, kebs, nacada thèse Guys Will think the sponsor has overflow of cash, again the government Will want the status quo of poverty remains in gor so as they chip or can continue giving gor handouts so as they get political mileage from gor fans. Remember nyamweya cheated us That fkf has no money n infact This was stage managed so as gor can look desperate n in process gova came to their rescue in Name of 30tickets

Most of sponsors require accountability if they were unable to account for Tuzo cash. Tell me are they going to accept new sponsor who may want to post the sponsorship package in media m’y heart tells me a big NO. They rather go with current status quo. Why cant gor office approach former KCB bank CEO martin oduor to advice them on ways to run gor prudently n issues of finances or they bring peter kenneth as intérim secretary général the Guy is a football administrator. If it is not thieving everywhere in gor .gor office can able to Pay up to 70% of players n TB dues every month

Most of TB members are there by merit n Ve big Cvs so Just That they come from one corner of Kenya they deserve to be there. I have no issues with EC being from one side of Kenya so long they produce results but the one we have are Just There no ambitions,no vision,no mission n objective at all .we should not be afraid to associate ourself with our leaders imagine people of central they associate themselves with There leaders n brand their productS in jubilee colours or brand There business in jubilee colours and ve Never seen those who have refused to buy from them because it Is painted jubilee are talking passionately about There jubilee. People of nyanza we cant go anywhere if we cant b passionate about where we come from n by working smart n doing business amongst ourself. People of nyanza want to be employed forever even if the pay is meagre no Wonder we cannot be able to get fares n go home to do some developments which can bring additionally income n we keep on blaming leaders. Central people Start business with few coins but they make it big. But people of nyanza we have capital but we cant do business no Wonder it takes long to get a millionaire from nyanza This Is what Obama talked about n Ve come to agree with him. The sacco n bread can create so manu jobs if for office is able to take the initiative seriously
