Gor Mahia officially 2018-2019 KPL champions

Gor Mahia Kogalo have officially been declared the 2018-2019 Sportpesa Premier League champions. This after a 1-1 draw with Vihiga United at Machakos on Wednesday. Bandari, Gor Mahia’s closest challengers, were held to a scoreless draw by Mathare United and were thus eliminated from contention.

Charles Momanyi scored in the 14th minute. Gor Mahia led 1-0 at halftime before Vihiga replied in the second half.

It is Gor Mahia’s 18th league title and 3rd consecutive title which means they will keep the trophy.

Additional reporting from the Standard

Samuel Onyango came close to breaking the deadlock for the hosts in the 11th minute but the winger fluffed his effort.

However, the former Ulinzi man made amends two minutes later when he perfectly executed a free kick for the unmarked Charles Momanyi, who powered a header past goalkeeper Michael Matasio.

Alex Imbusia then saw his long-range effort go inches wide in the 19th minute before Dennis Wafula’s shot was deflected for a throw-in.

Jacques Tuyisenge missed a golden opportunity to double Gor’s lead on the half-hour mark after being released through by Nicholas Kipkirui before Kenneth Muguna shot directly at Matasio.

Kipkirui then ballooned his shot after combining well with Muguna in the box.

Moments later, Vihiga captain Amos Kigadi forced a fine save from goalkeeper Frederick Odhiambo before he missed a sitter from Imbusia’s delivery.

Gor responded but the keeper made a superb save to deny Onyango.

Kigadi nearly drew level five minutes into the second half, but his glancing header went over the bar before Onyango’s shot went wide on the opposite end.

But after a series of attempts, Kigadi was finally rewarded in the 57th minute when he rose high above his markers to head home Hedmond Mauda’s free kick.

Gor almost regained the lead immediately after the restart but Matasio did well to parry away Kipkirui’s effort for a fruitless corner.

  • There was a Gor K’ogalo player who promised early in the session that we are getting nothing. Where is he now or he transferred to another club?

  • Gor is such a great club that should now be above other premier league clubs in Kenya. Should have their own income generating source, start thinking of looking for bigger sponsors that can build stadium for them and focus in winning in international levels. Winning 3 times in a row implies that K’Galo is simply greater than any existing club in Kenya.
    Congratulations!

Gor should start early preparation for CAF Club Champions by retaining good players, recruiting new good players plus preparing well financially. Congratulations team Gor

  • Hallelujah. Praise be to God Almighty. The season has been shirt, crazy and full of journey. God granted us Journey mercies and favor in abundance. This is but another golden chance accorded to our blunder prone E.C and they should pick this with both hands cause they don’t deserve accolades but to be berated. The players have retained this trophy despite the offices ineptitude. To God be the glory.

  • The season is over and the facts show that since 2012 , this has been our most successful year contextually and that is because not only have we won the league like B.Williamson , D.Kerr , Nuttal e.g did but we have gone even further by for the first time reaching the quarters of a Caf competition .
These achievements have not come out of a vacuum but have been made to happen and even though sometimes we may feel that we could have done more , it is just in order not to lose sight of the fact that our glass is half full and not half empty and to fill the glass to its current state required the combined efforts of the three components that make and drive Gor Mahia and that is the EC, TB/Playing unit and the Fan base .
Now is that time when we should take stock of what we did right and what we can do better and again this has to be a conversation that involves all the three components because all of us had some things we did right and some things we could have done better , the habit of 100% negativity and wishing the team to fail because you dont like so and so is not only childish but also very shortsighted .
And for Hassan Oktay , you had a season that was so congested that you rarely had time to impart your phylosophy let alone to train coz if you were not playing , you were on the road to another game or in the air to another country and the time between now and next season offers you enough time to show us your tactical and technical blueprint , Please Mr Oktay , be around when all team decisions e.g recruitment for next season are made .
@Jakoyo has made his opinion vis a vis who he wishes to see coming into the team , Personally since I only watch Gor matches , I may not have seen any on his list for more than two matches and so my opinion may not be contextually informed but rather that go out on a tangent I would rather that bloggers float their lists , but I have heard Oktay talking well of one Avire .
Otherwise congratulations to the boys for once again making us proud but now is when the hard work begins .

Glory be to God in any situation we are! I thank the Almighty God who have made this to happen again. Thank you Lord for making Team Gor Mahia to win this trophy for good, it is because of your will and not because of human which always have different hearts to wards fellow human being achievement.
I also thank the players as a team it is because of the hard work and believing in God that everything in him is possible and you made it. I also thank the Technical bench this include the coach and his team the office, the fans and the entire fraternity of Gor Mahia. Now put in mind that you are going for champions league pray that this time you go far do not fear any team with the help from God you can beat them. Remember this quote from the Bible Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous; Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” Amen

  • Congrats to the entire team wininng 2018. Shame also to the these Kenyan coaches who have continuously failed to beat the European(mostly Gor) coaches. The frequent referee was biased cry becomes baseless when you cannot explain the 30 plus points difference between you and Gor.
Gor Mahia should now strategize how to settle permanently in the African scene. I still believe that Gor knocked itself out of caf rather than the narrative that it was knocked out. This started right from the Walusimbi fiasco.
But I am also of opinion that Gor should skip the caf scene for one season “to get it’s bearings”.
I admit that Rachier has done well chez Gor, but has he reached his peak? Is there more left in his bag of tricks? The worst part is if Rachier feels entitled, I picked Gor ” from the grave” so I can do as I please.

    • @Dinga, with due respect, why do you want Gor Mahia to skip CAF for one season? If this is your case, please answer the following questions:-
      1. Why is there competition in the first place?
      2. What is the driver for competition?
      3. What is the goal of Gor Mahia as a football club?
      4. How do you attract new talented players?
      5. Why do we have CAF competitions?
      6. What are the goals of our players?

    • @dinga, I think with the current Gor Mahia constitution, structure and culture even if we skip CAF for 10 years nothing will change so we are better off playing there and getting the exposure and financial rewards even if most of it is embezzled than not participating at all.

I will refer to the book “The Animal Farm” purely for illustration purposes. It’s most famous quote is that All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. But equality is not what I what to refer to as far as the book is concerned. I want to refer to the Donkey. He had muscle and power but let it be that “Nothing” could be done, so he was ready to endure all the corruption that Napoleon and his cronies brought about.
…Change will come, so long as we do not entertain corruption.
        @ Jamigori
what I am trying to drive home is that Gor needs(TimeOff) to take a good look into the Caf scenario(expenses et all) and come up with a strategy on how to become a permanent player in these tournaments. It needs to plan well and not just jump into competitions for the sake of it. Pulling out might not be necessary but I could not think of a better way.
Same reason I would rather see Gor become a “Kisumu” club. Nairobi is already grabbed and chances of ever getting a stadium are just hopeless. Players have to live in slummy areas or are forced to play football just to pay rent. Why not move to Kisumu, get land which could be arranged by the friendly county and build appartments for players. With one stroke you could have probably halved the player remunerations. Austerity is never cool but at times they are necessary.
Your questions are aligned to a permanent pull out, this is not what I am asking for.

  • Whereas many people may have very good theories on how to run Gor Mahia and even fail to acknowledge or appreciate what Rachier (not the EC) has done , it is worth noting like @Musymo has rightly said that the structural architecture of Gor Mahia and the intrigues and backstabings that abound within what constitutes it makes what the club has achieved inspite of it all very laudable .
Running Gor as currently constituted is no joke and while it may sound nice wishing for one other than Rachier to Steer the ship , the elephant in the room is who this better person is , because I think all what Gor lovers want is a better Gor Mahia and not necessarily who is chairman and if there is someone out there who is better , then the onus is on him to come out rather than talking through proxies .
People also need to appreciate that Gor is one of the few teams in Africa to have achieved and with budgets well below their much better endowed opponents and their is absolutely no reason for them to forfeit the opportunity to play in the continentals , yet this is a team that never failed , this is a team that succeeded way beyond considering all the inhibitions and constraints .
As proof that theory is easy and that talk is cheap , the doubters can ask one Moses Kuria , who prior to associating with Mt Kenya FC had very wonderful theories to Gor Mahia and even chipped in with a few insults , the kind I see clueless “Gor fans” bandying about .
With all those Moses Kuria’s expertise and insults to Rachier , his team Mt Kenya is at the Bottom while the “clueless” Rachier is at the Top .
One thing that has to be clear to all is that we Kenyans have a very weird way of engagement , e.g the ones who support Gor and who have the opportunity to engage and can afford to engage and know why it is urgent that they engage will not do so and while not doing so , they are intelligent enough to know who will be hired to make “decisions” on their behalf and immediately the decision has been made , they will be out guns blazing on why things are being done contrary to their wishes , I have said this before but I will keep saying it again and again and again .
Gor would be a much better entity if all these wonderful ideas we have on social media were presented INSIDE the Kogalo house where choices with consequences are made .

      • @Jamiriambo , if only you were keen on my post , you may have noted that my reference to Moses Kuria was vis a vis and limited to those who opine from the outside with theoritical assumptions on how best things should be done but once inside realize that the dynamics involved require much more than assumptions .
But reading your understanding of my post and since it is a throw back thursday , I was amusingly reminded of some like you who left examination rooms bragging on how the exams were easy only to realize later that what they answered is not what was asked .
Lastly , Congratulations to Hassan Oktay for being named Coach of the Month .
