2013 shield cup finalists Gor Mahia have been bundled out of the Shield Cup third round by National Super League side GFC 105 in a game played at the Moi Stadium kisumu on Saturday 19 July.

The game ended in a one-all draw in regular time, forcing the game to go to sport kicks where GFC won 4-2 after Gor’s Simon Mburu and Musa Mohammed’s penalties were saved, while GFC converted all theirs.

Gor had taken the lead in the 82nd minute through second half substitute Simon Mburu. GFC however equalized seven minutes later through Dennis Shiveka to send the game extra time.

First half

The game started on a slow note and it was not until the 19th minute that there was a real chance of the game. Patrick Oboya sent clear by Joseph Kariuki but good defending from GFC saw them clear the ball off Oboya’s feet for a corner that was easily dealt with.

In the 27th minute, Gor e through Herbert Kompany, a shot that forced Caled Wafula into a finger tip save. The resultant corner was once again wasted. A minute late, GFC won a free kick that was brought in by Dule Abuya. Vincent Mageto’s strike however went over the bar.

In the 44th minute, GFC had the best chance of a goal. Hezron Ochieng was (Mageto) shot wide.

Second half

In the second half, Gor came back the stronger side but were not able to find the back of the net. Arthus Ssemanzi, Joseph Kariuki and Oboya were guilty of missed chances in the second half.

In the 74th minute, Gor’s best chance Mburu. Gor had been awarded with a freekick that was floated in by Eric Ochieng’. Mburu’s connection however rolled across the goal mouth.

In the 82nd minute, Gor found the opener through Mburu. Simon Pierre’s cross found Artur Ssemanzi but his shot hit the cross bar and bounced back to the field of play, Kariuki’s rebound attempt was blocked by the GFC defence but not cleared and Mburu made no mistake scoring from close range to give Gor the lead.

Post match penalties

The lead lasted for only six minutes as GFC’s Hezron Ochieng’s across found Dennis Shiveka who beat Juma with a hard shot to draw the hosts level.
The final whistle went with both teams tied at a one-all draw, forcing the game to go to post match penalties.

Harun Shakava and Eric Ochieng’ converted theirs while Simon Mburu and Musa Mohammed’s penalties were saved.

You win some you lose some. Even the excuse of some players missing does not wash. Once you are in Gor you are supposed to be better than the lower Div player. Else one has no excuse for being there. At least now the coach and fans know who ar the players who drive the team. I see this as a blessing in disguise since looking at our bench we are so weak so the fewer the games we play the better for the players who are there day in day out. A player like Shakava must be feeling exhausted by now.
I hope the coaches on the blog will not start taking us the Ingwe way of solving issues. What will assist us is how fast we recover.
My surprise is that the team knew Timothy to be cup-tied yet FKF clarified that he was not tied even before the game. Says alot about the people sorrounding BW but that an issue for another day. Let’s continue stabilizing the boat since the biggest loser in this game is FKF and not Gor, No more gate collection and fans to follow the cup. In case Ingwe is knocked out then the game might be played on a wednesday and for free-entry

  • Pole Mashemeji…..@# 4 Dan you are right; the excuse of some players missing does not hold water. Ingwe made it to the finals of the Nile tournament minus Wanga, Situma, Kasaya and Keli all of whom were with Harambee Stars.

  • I saw the defeat from the first whistle. It was written all over……and the penalties, ouch , the players body language showed it all and our keeper? Pathetic. I reckon our under 19 team could have done better today.

    First …out of champions league.

    Second….out of dstv cup

    Third…..out of top eight cup

    Fourth….out of gotv cup.

Question…does this coach know to win trophies?

Let refocus and target kagame cup and retaining the league, I have always said that from the onset perhaps this loss could be a blessing in disguise.

This could easily turn out to be our worst season ever ! Together we can salvage….it is very very tough, I sympathize with all.

    Next is Efusi!

Surely when will we have a good enough team that we cant complain. The EC is really messing the coach. The FKF wanted money so they pushed gor to play shingo upande. Nway good luck GFC we hope u win the trophy which i doubt.

@Jakoyo, our worst ever season was when we were actually ‘relegated’ only for Securicor to fold and the football powers reinstated us. When Ingwe performed poorly there was no recourse and they had to go play in the Nationwide league. As it is we still have the Kagame Cup as well as TPL title to fight for.
At times I really pity our coach (and Kenyan coaches in general).
By the way, at the TPL level or even at the National (HS) level how do you teach a player to control the ball? Then how/when do you train them on formation? Our players are really treated well; flying to Msa and Ksm for games (no team does this) so I expect them to really be hungry for a win; whether they are talented or not since a determined team will always frustrate a talented team.

for this lose u can never blame the coach, guys have been shouting here that other players shuld be fielded whenever any our regulars make a mistake in a match, some even question the inteligence of the coach.well, this game has shown that indeed the coach is in a beta position to field the players he has faith in,coz he works with them day in day out.its sad that some players have really failed to raise to the occassion wen given a chance.

  • Am shocked yet some still think we’ll make an impact in CECAFA!
I don’t think the coach is totally blameless. Just the other day some were praising the coach 4 his “astute” signings. Is it not the coach who signed players with poor ball control. Match formation & its execution is mainly a coach’s issue. Blaming missing players means GM depends on individuals not tactics.
That said I think not all is fine @ GMFC & flying team 2 Ksm are EC coverups. WHEN WE LOSE BW’S POST MATCH R DEPRESSIING.

  • In summary the “few” missing players have exposed our coaches underbelly.
    Poor tactics.
This is something some of us have suspected for a long time & has been ruthlessly exposed by teams like Esperance,AFC.
That aside I hope the shock defeat is not because of unpaid allowance/salaries etc.

I wish we still had the old East African Railways train plying Nairobi to Malava via Kisumu, I would have booked these FOOTBALLING QUACKS on a third class tickets back to Nairobi without even a drop of water. The team is a disgrace.

Bobby Williamson seems to be on a mission to smash all records- even the most dubious ones. He seems not to have learnt never to judge teams merely by their names. Just the other day he admitted to have lost to Top Fry because he did not know much of that team then. Apparently that is what cost us against Esperance. It is what has ailed us against Efusi ever since BW cam into the scene and it is what will cost us in the upcoming East and Central Africa Club Championship. Those calling for Michael Nam and Bobby Oyugi should tell us what stopped these guys from coaching K’Ogalo before BW came into the scene.

@ The BANDIT thanks 4 being analytical and objective. From where I seat that defeat was a good riddance and confirmation that our win against TOP FRY was a “Flash in the Pan”.Kagame Cup is a pipe dream while winning the TPL is a 50/50 possibility.

  • This is stupid talk..we want to win not play entetaining football and loose. BobbyW is one of the best coach in africa. We have very bad players who were selected by EC but we are still winning most matches. Please dont disrupt gor the way afc is doing. Loosing is part of the game. Leave the players to fully gel in 2..3 yrs then we will play entertaining football.

  • Stupid comment from Amimo. Who is Nam and Oyugi in the football circles? We just need to evaluate performance but not post crump which can’t help the club. Why can’t we give good ideas than being emotion?

Bobby isn’t the problem but people loading these garbage to Gor are. Bobby must be going really hard time training these folks. SHAME ON TB! our constant failure is there responsibility. Ati, Kopany, Ssemanzi, Otieno. I watched them last Wednesday and it would only take a blind man to recruit such stuff .

  • Gor Mahia fans blaming Coaching unit..are loud mouths and masqueraders. The coaching unit spend time with those players and know their work rate and out put, the coach knows who to field based on the team he is playing.
The role of the fans is to be positive and support the Club in wins and losses..if u have grievances, email directly to the management or wait for AGM, but dont display it here in public.
Recruitment and failing to impress in first game is no big deal, u go for potential that can be natured. Young players recruited need exposure and no better way than this..train with Kogalo and learn. FANS waache moto, the team needs support and morale

    Reply
  • When a player misses a penalty, do you blame the coach? When a keeper can’t save the kick, who is to blame. The players should squarely take responsibility (not blame). Otherwise, let’s fight another day. All the best Kogalo. It’s not easy to top the league at this point of time, but there we are. Keep working hard as a team and build from there.

  • Fans need to learn on how to vent their frustrations with decorum and not hurling insults. Yes we lost and we will still be beaten by other teams but ask yourself by calling the players football quacks if you are adding any value in your criticism.Of cause we are not happy but let’s give the TB time for them to deliver. When the coach used not to field certain players there was complain now that he gave them the opportunity still we complain then what do we want.

  • I support the team fully but how can explain the recruitment of kennedy opiyo who has no ball control or powerful shots but weak feeble shots or did he buy his way inside. The good thing about BW is that he gives everybody a chance in big matches and now he knows that Kopany is obvously a failed signing. Im watching Chris Wekesa of Nakumatt how can u compare him to Kennedy Ayong Opiyo. Surely how was he dropped from gor and recruited some pple with no technical skills.Nway i still hope and pray that we will pass all obstacles and win the league.

@Olu, truth must be said and this is plain truth, GOR is a serious club with clear objectives to achieve. You can’t win league by naturing youthful players who are shy even taking penalty. Kariuki is very good because he plays purposefully. Good people, why should you allow TB to mess us up. Bobby must be in serious problems training some of these guys.

It’s good to see that some of us have noted the big task the TB has. Like I said there is no room for ball control training at that level. It;s purely tactics and formations yet some of the Kenyan players still struggle to control the ball. As much as we criticize the EC have we asked ourselves how the team has avoided the financial cries we have heard from all teams including Ingwe? And they even manage to motivate the team by flying them to Ksm and Msa.
Even as fans need to look ao ourselves. Are we helping the EC and TB to build a better Gor? Or do we just criticize because we lost, which is actually one of the soccer results. Nam and Oyugi would not join Gor because of these same fans> they find better working environments outside of the shenenigans of Gor and Ingwe

This things happen. Not long ago Wigan defied all odds to beat big teams to win FA cup despite being relegated at the end of that season. It is not a abnormal therefore for GFC 105 to beat Kogallo. In any case this is the nature of knockout tournaments. There is no crisis in Kogallo. I am not worried about nothing. Kuvunjika kwa mwiko siyo mwisho wa kupika ugali.
For God and my my beloved club – Kogallo.

Almost all the competitive Cups are gone, what are the chances of Gor Mahia winning any cup this season if their best second eleven string can’t beat a division seven team? Whoever is against criticizing this team is the real enemy of the team.

    1. Remember that it’s their duty to play football that’s why even K.R.A is on our neck because of the un-remitted employees taxes. They are being paid to PLAY FOOTBALL. It’s members right to ask.

    2. Criticism will help the team to improve. They just need to pick on what they need from the critics to improve on.

    3. If they don’t need our criticism, then they need our help remember the team is on 350100 sponsorship. The more they come rigid the more the people get lethargic against the team, then there will be a reduction in match attendance and the rest will be history.

    4. Gor has fallen before, it can fall again.

  • surely, look at the results of the other tpl clubs against lower tier club, most scored several goals against their opponents. i think kogalo is like a headless chicken running around in circles.
    1. i thought that all the 23players in kogalo are champion materials…how wrong was i.
    2. i know that no team is easy, but surely hierachy must reign. it was a big day for gfc even without winning the shield i am very sure that they are extremely contented because they beat GOR MAHIA FC.
    3. serious teams with serious players dont lose winnable matches and strives and wins extremely dificult matches, thats what define champions.
    4. nobody at kogalo (EC& T. BENCH) recognized the historical importance of that match to kogalo fraternity moreso the kisumu based fans, the stadia itself and even to the leadership pf that lakeside city.
    5. its like the players are becoming complacent and taking the support of the green army for granted and as a right that comes with no responsibilities.
    6. its like nobody is concerned about safeguarding the mighty name of kogalo against AIBU NDOGO NDOGO OR WICHKUOT MAPOTOPOTO
    7. FINALY: SOMEBODY NEEDS TO REFRESH THE MIND OF THE ENTIRE TEAM THAT IT COSTS MONEY TO HAVE THE TERRACES PAINTED GREEN AND WHITE, INDEED THE DIE HARD TRAVELLING FANS INVESTS SO MUCH IN KOGALO AND THE ONLY RETURN THEY EXPECT IS A FLOWING, CONSISTENCE TEAM THAT ALL THE MEMBERS( EC, PLAYERS & TECHNICAL BENCH)ARE PRESENT TO AND OWNS.
    GIVE ME A BREAK.
