Gor Mahia out of Sportpesa Supercup

Gor Mahia have been eliminated from the 2019 Sportpesa Supercup. This after they fell to unfancied Mbao FC 4-3 on post match penalties. The match had ended 1-1 in regulation.

Additional Reporting from the Nation

Gor Mahia were on Wednesday dumped out of SportPesa Cup 4-3 on post-match penalties by little-known Mbao FC at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

After a one-all stalemate in regular, Gor captain Harun Shakava had his penalty saved by promising Mbao custodian Metacha Mnata as fellow defender Shaffiq Batambuze saw his effort come off the bar, while substitutes Francis Kahata, Jacques Tuyisenge and Boniface Omondi scored for the losers.

Mbao scored their spot-kicks through Said Hamis, Ngalema, Ibrahim Hashimu and David Mwasa whilst Gor goalie saved Harim Abdulkarim’s penalty. Veteran Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech gave Gor Mahia the lead from the spot after Erisa Ssekisambu’s goal-bound shot was handled inside the area midway through the second half before Aboubacker Ngalema drew Mbao level.

“I know Gor Mahia very well,” Mbao coach Ally Bushiri, an ex-Tanzania international explained after the game. Related Content •Simba claw Leopards to reach SportPesa Cup semis “I emphasised to my players on the need to keep the tactical discipline and awareness. When the score was still 0-0 at the break, I knew we had a chance.” After consistently probing Mbao’s backline in the opening half, Oliech’s goal eventually came from the penalty spot, with the 31-year-old forward sending goalkeeper Mnata the wrong way from 12 yards.

This spot kick was awarded after Mbao defender David Miwasa handled Ssekisambu’s shot in the box. Ngalema’s goal meanwhile came after a well worked move by Mbao from the corner kick.

The highlight of the opening half was when assistant referee Gustav Banguma seemed to wrongly disallow a legitimate Ssekisambu goal after 18-minutes. The Ugandan forward had reacted quickest to tap home from point blank after a fierce Dennis Oliech header had been parried back to play by Mnata. Two minutes later, a visibly irritated Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay was sent off from the dugout by match referee Erick Maniakiza after an altercation with the fourth official.

Zedekiah Otieno immediately stepped up to take charge of the Kenyan champions for the remainder of the match. By that time, Gor should have been atleast two goals ahead, against a technically average side whose owners specialise in producing furniture.

First, Lawrence Juma created space for himself inside the box five minutes after the opening whistle but then had his right-footed shot flash narrowly wide of the goal with Mnata well beaten. Moments later, Gervas Rambo shot over the bar for the hosts before Dennis Oliech had a shot acrobatically saved by Mnata.

Yes…and we are already fatigued ? Awuoro ! remember we are out of charity cup to minnows, out of CAF champions league to first timers, out of sportpesa cup to minnows…. Sitting 6th on the 2019 league with remote chance of retaining it, key midfield players have exited, player revolt is now eminent due to favouritism of Dennis oliech ( oktay’s oliech must play mentality) and you tell me this coach is the Calibre of gor ? …….zamalek will rub the salt into this painful wound next weekend , signalling the end of one of the worst coaches in club history .

I am beginning to listen to @jakoyo seventh sense. Coach is behaving like Gor spokeman. He should speak to his players instead.

For him I agree with the adage “life is short” He will soon be gone

From this lose there are lessons learnt: Shakava is not a defender worth playing for Gornahia, the equalizer passed in front of him and he was not quick enough to clear.
Assistant refs were openly biased and disallowed open goals purportedly from offside.
Let players focus on the more important competition; kpl and CAF group matches.

The referees biasness aside, I had warned here sometimes back that Mbao is currently number 4 in the Tanzanian premier league table standings and such a team cannot be considered to be weak.

The truth is that we underated Mbao, from the players to us fans. We don’t seem to learn. We assumed that we will beat Rayon in Nbi, draw or beat Lobi stars. We don’t seem to learn. By the way why is the coach overlooking Kipkirui. He is our hidden hero. And why didn’t we take Guikan and Muguna? Maybe our actions served us right. Is the coach having problems choosing a team ro play? Simba had all their big guns in their game against ingwe yet we had a completely new team. Did our players know how much their profiles grow by playing Everton?

Most fans in this blog are only fans of TV. You will find them arguing about English premier league and they will not in their life travel to Old Trafford or anfield to watch those teams that they can only watch on TV. They are the ones who believe that Gor mahia fc should win all the matches. Team is fine and we should not get worried. The likes of jakoyo are only happy when Gor mahia fc loses. Even that zico he have been hopping to take charge could not even protect our lead in the absence of oktay.

@Dan Original, I concur. Gor Mahia players and fans like under rating teams. That is why we have been defeated by Mbao. We never do a proper background check on a team, as long as it is not a common name we are used to like Zamalek or TP Mazembe, we assume it is a weak team. That is our undoing.

Nicholas Kipkirui is a good striker, the team has not exploited his potential. His name was not even forwarded to CAF.

Gormahia.net is blessed with gifted analysts of football. Le Pastre,J’Asego etc please lets have your opinions/analysis if you watched the match. Methinks new defender had a good outing. Opinions/analysis is differ from assurances & are enlightening.

  • Apart from that horrible defeat what a talent we have in Geoffrey Ochieng.Dennis Oliech is simply gifted and very unselfish he just needed to pair with Tuyisenge to tap in the goals home;he has nothing to prove his CV talks for him

  • Whilst its in order for one to wish to win everything , life in practice does’nt work that way , even the most successful man or woman in the world never wins everything .
Barcelona , Real Madrid , Bayern Munich , Man City etc are amongst the biggest clubs in the world , but do they win everything ?
Germany , Brazil , France , Spain etc are amongst the biggest footballing nations in the world , but do they win everything ?-NO.
Now Gor Mahia is not even amongst the top 5 , maybe even top10 clubs in Africa and hence its total hallucination and illusion to expect as to win everything
as much as it would be a wish , the bottom line is that no matter how big we are or we think we are , we will win some and lose some , Guardiola wins some and loses some , he will still win and lose some , He may even miss winning the league as well as the champions league .
Personally I have been around world football long enough to know the difference between real life and illusions , emotions and facts and despite it all , win or lose , EC or no EC , Oktay or no Oktay , its Gor Mahia all the way .

  • This is just what Gor needed. It’s good we are out of the Sportpesa cup. Mbao showed fear and that’s enough respect for Gor.
Gor Mahia players are not tired. They are unfit!! How did this happen?? This squad is not great but it needs one great midfielder. Gor did not exert themselves against Mbao. That was ok, now it’s Zamalek’s turn. Oktay tactics did not show much brilliance. I thought Gor was done with those “Shakava” passes.
Some players like Cercidy, BlackBerry and the Burundian striker guy need to wake or get out of this team. Blackberry comes out the worst cause he seems to be happy just to earn a salary… just like Zico.
Zamalek will truly show as who Oktay is, remember you now have your rest. Gor Mahia supposedly has the best players in the KPL but have nothing to show for it. Are players being squeezed into the club just to earn kshs100,000.
How much are players in Kariobangi sharks earning and why do the play like it’s the last soccer match in the world.
Where has this attitude problem in eminating from…
EC should come up with a proper bonus package. Roadside promises should stop. Apart from Tuyisenge, Kahata and Oliech it is hard to see any intelligence from this side. Kahata is becoming slow, or is hiding unfitness. Oliech seemed ‘Old’ but it’s probably the long layoff.
So Oktay, you now have to work wonders this time. Zamalek, Zamalek, Zamalek. I will look at nothing more.

  • I’m happy that the coach chose the services of fringe players like Geoffrey and Lawrence who hardly get a starting call in matches. I’m happy that we came back early enough to avoid thrashing from the likes of Kagere. That would have been more humiliating. Let the team focus on CAF Confederation and premier league.
Lessons to Shakava and Batambuze on how to execute penalties. Lessons to Zico on how to protect a slim lead. We still have hundreds of years more to participate in tournaments and leagues, fans and players will pass away but the club will still exist.
Those who wish to express their regrets about the match should do so from the comfort of their latrines.

We wasted tonnes of chances. We need to be clinical with the finishing. Then the midfield….

  • When we lose then the debate should revolve on why we lost so that we learn from it. When we win then the debate should point out the strength of the team vis avi the weaknesses of the opposing team. Yes it’s factual that you cannot always be winning and winning some and losing some is part of the game but it’s my opinion that bloggers should be allowed to ventilate objectively on the performance of the team.

  • Having watched the replay it seems there was no problem with our lineup with exception on Ssekisambu who wasn’t clinical but by half time ? ? should have been ringing for TB to bring Tuyisenge to pair the unselfish Oliech. Most important we have great players to destroy Zamalek next month and incoming talents like G Ochieng to cement our dominance

@Moses and @Sylvester, i like your contributions unlike some of us who when the team wins are over the moon but when we lose they throw all the unprintables towards the EC, TB and players. Some have even counted Gor out of CAF and prophesied a beating from Zamalek. Simba was beaten 5-0 but picked themselves up and beat Ingwe. Why do the rest think that we cannot even beat Zamalek at home, which we will.
We can’t be winning all the time and moreover the keeper we expected to be helping us when it comes to penalties has now become ‘ordinary’ and hence the vitriol that was being thrown towards Bonnie has more or less disappeared.
We have the game against KCB over the weekend to sharpen our claws but we should notice that the KPL is becoming tougher day by day so any result on that day is possible, but we hope for a comfortable win
