Gor Mahia start campaign for 4th title

Timothy Otieno did not see much action this season

Having won the 2015 Supercup and 2015 Kenya Premier League title and having made it through to the next round of the GoTV shield, Gor Mahia will start their campaign for a fourth title in 2015 when they take on Muhoroni Youth this weekend.

So far in 2015, Gor Mahia have not lost to any local team during regular play. They will be looking to continue with their unbeaten streak. But Muhoroni have been in fine form during the second leg of the 2015 season. They have not lost in their last 12 matches, a feat that has seen them rise from the relegation zone to their current fourth position in the KPL standings. Team manager

“That game will be a derby on its own. It will be a match to decide whose unbeaten record is halted. We will really work hard to come out as winners, said their team manager Mike Odongo to futaa.com

For Gor Mahia aside from maintaining their unbeaten run, it is a chance for certain players who have been absent for long stretches to prove their worth. Jerim Onyango or Wycliff Juma should see action between the sticks.

George Odhiambo “Blackberry” was resurgent in 2014 but has spent a lot of time on the bench until recently when he has started to work his way back into the starting line-up.

“I am happy to be able to play wherever I can and to contribute to the team winning. That is the most important thing for me and not personal glory,” he said to supersport.com.

And Blackberry is well aware of the threat posed by Muhoroni Youth.

“The game will be tough and we know we cannot underestimate them at all,” he said.

“They will know that we are favourites and they will have nothing to lose so they will be very dangerous. The season so far has been very good and we know that we have to continue in the same vein and we will be in a good place come the end of the season.” he continued.

Gor Mahia in the KPL Top 8

Gor Mahia has played in every single KPL top 8 tournament since the tournament’s inauguration in 2011.

2011

In 2011, Gor Mahia opened by beating Mathare United 2-0 then lost to Ulinzi  in the semis drawing the first leg 0-0 before losing the second leg 0-1.

2012

Gor Mahia last won this trophy in 2012 when they beat Ulinzi Stars 2-0 in extra time with goals from Rama Salim and Itubu Imbem. In the first round they had received a walkover against AFC Leopards who opted out of the KPL Top 8 in order to focus on their league campaign. In the next round, Gor Mahia beat Tusker 1-0 in the first leg and 3-0 in the second leg. Goals came from Rama Salim, Edwin Lavatsa and a memorable goal from Moses Odhiambo “Dube” who lobbed the out of position Tusker goalkeeper.

2013

In the 2013 opening round, Gor Mahia beat Ulinzi 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended scoreless. In the semis they lost 0-1 to Tusker in the first leg and drew the second leg 0-0.

2014

In 2014 Gor Mahia opened with a 2-1 win over Thika United thanks to goals from George Odhiambo and Dan Sserunkuma. In the semis, they played Tusker. They lost the first leg 0-1 in Meru, before drawing the second leg 1-1 thanks to a goal from Rama Salim.

Just asking who will be goalkeeper in this things kpl n gotv. Boni oluoch ako wapi is the only one who can maintain unbeaten run

  • If our belove Coach Pro. Nuttal is serious to take all the Four Cups, he should mentain Boniface Oluoch between the Post, not Potea Pata, like Onyango and Juma.We did concede easy goals in our match with Ushuru, if it were Boni, it was clean-Sheet. This year is Boni’s year who feel that he wants to stand between the Post let him pack-up and go. We have not forgotten how we lost Champoinship to Matano in 2012, just imagine Tusker FC was playing City Stars FC while Gor Mahia was playing Thika United and Matano was sure that he will be crowned the Champion and he did it? What kind of surity was that?

What if God forbid Boni was to be injured? Would we take him on as the keeper? Let’s give a chance to all players to get play time

The coach has already stated that fatigue is creeping into player fitness, there is no point of chasing all the four titles.
    1. Gor has not done recruiting to be able to chase the 4 titles.
    2. Some of these tittles are simply prestige with nothing more to offer.
    Gor should go for titles or tournaments that will lift the general profile of the club. These are;
    a)League-Done b)CECAFA c)Africa Champions Cup
The experience that Gor underwent during the cecafa shud now be taken into consideration.
Take note that Azam had one major advantage over Gor and their coach kept repeating it, he could replace his players in each department without affecting his play pattern. Gor on the other hand used the same players throughout since the replacements were basically ineffective.
Gor shud limit the titles it’s chasing seriously and those it can afford to lose. Use the bench players in tournaments like the Super 8. Apart from getting 1mill shillions this title is simply a pale title. Gor has already taken the league so even the Shield cup will not help Gor coz the winner is set to play the Africa Confederations Cup. Gor EC shud have thought out this strategety the moment the club took the league. Gor is going to the Africa Champions league but will end up being knocked out at the first round coz of injuries and fatigue. Most of you have seen how teams like Ulinzi play their football. So I REPEAT, Gor does not need all these titles coz at the end of the day they will be detrimental to the Gor Africa campaign.
The only way out is to make sure that each player has an effective backup and you all know this is not the case as it is now. Let the Gor bench chase these other local titles.

Some good points there. Players like Kagere and Olunga should be rested. Let Blackberry and Tim Otieno prove themselves.
In defence, why not deploy Calabar’s brother whom we haven’t seen. And yes Wycliff Juma is a competent goalkeeper. Let him play.

    • Dinga you should know that some Players like Kagere signed only one year at K’Ogalo, so let the Coach make use of them because you never know who will be there next season. To make it worse Players like Jerry are the one’s want the Club to take all the four Cups, to me let the Coach use the Players he has been using unless one has got an injury or to make it short, then why did they registered the Clubs for these Tournaments?. The way you are talk you want the Club to give way for other Teams. If a player has been weak those Tournament will not make him to be Super Stars. Please Prof. Nuttall just make History, some Coachs reffered you as Physical-Trainner not a Coach. ( LOGARUZIC), go own and take all the Cups in Kenya and will make improve CV, as Coach

If we are sure we are going to lose Kagere then we should start giving more opportunities to other players to prepare them for next year

I think lets be objective you cannot take a game to kisumu where we expect many fans then u field players who are not fit n expect those fans to be happy after they loose I think those days of heartbreaks are over. The kind of players people are talking here have failed to prove themselves and you expect them to do wonders now just forget about it. Am not worried at all coz even if we loose some players in Dec if gor office is serious we can get a goal keeper from gor junior who almost managed to keep unbeaten run also we pick nyakeya.waruinge.onyango from gor junior who have been scoring so .what if loga goes ahead and wins top8 and gotv he will improve his CV. So as such we need to retain kagere to mould this young coming players and we sell Boniface oluoch n olunga to make some cash to buy a player from Sudanese league

Those U19 players you mentioned have never played for the senior team so we do not know how good they are exactly. The mere fact that they are scoring a lower league does not mean they will shine in KPL. It would be better to try them out in a tournament like this one.

  • Why buy players? Get all you need from the under 19 team.

  • Why buy players? Get all you need from the Gor Mahia under 19 team. Antony Akumu, Black Berry, Collins Okoth are all from academy Gor Mahia academy system. So it is working.

I would just urge our members here on this forums to at least have some respect and at the same time lets appreciate what players like Jerry has done to this club, they might be down in form right now but lets appreciate them because of what we have achieved when they were on top of things, and let me remind some of you here that some of the stars we are now praising we might not have them next season, you might find yourself with the same players you are now calling names,so please fellow fans lets not behave like typical kenyan people who will never appreciate the yesteryear’s good work just because they now have better things.

Well said Erico. Some of our fans behave funnily. we have to appreciate all our players since am not sure any player joins Gor to lose

It has now become a norm that every time people must complain, look at what they have done to Abondo am very sure we contributed to the decline of his game because of our bad attitude after he lost the penalty, the guy was criticized like he has killed someone and yet it was not even GORs game from that day he has never been the Abondo we new when we were starting the season,so please lets torn down

    As usual,they have started

Coach Paul Nkata keen to bundle K’Ogalo out of KPL Top 8 tourney but raises concern over officiating which he says might be dictated by the fans
Muhoroni Youth coach Paul Nkata insists his team stands a chance to defeat Gor Mahia if refereeing will be transparent.
Several coaches have raised concerns in recent past over officiating when their teams play against current champions – notably Robert Matano of Ulinzi Stars, Ushuru’s Ken Kenyatta, former Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe and Peter Okidi of Nakuru All Stars.
Nkata, who has overseen the sugar millers’ recent rise in Kenyan Premier League, hopes this will be a different case for his side. “Sometimes officials are pressurized by the fans and end up making mistakes,” the Ugandan coach told Goal on Friday.
“If officiating will be fair, we stand a chance to win this match. I hope it will be controlled fairly with no team favored at all. I hope we will not complain over officiating by the end of the match.
“This will be a very tough match for both sides, they have an advantage of twelfth man and that we know has been a factor behind their success. They have experienced players playing for national teams while we do not have any. It will be about teamwork and we will give our best to the last minute.”
Muhoroni Youth have been outstanding in second leg claiming 27points out of possible 33, a record matched by only Gor Mahia.

As mention b4, coaches will resort to what KenyattaMatano do…one or two players r used as hatchet men. They two resort to many fouls so long as Gor is attacking. When the ref calls the fouls he is deemed as biased since obviously the calls r on one side. Disadvantage to Gor is that the injury list will go up. These teams already know that shud they try to play soccer then Gor will hammer them, yet they have to beat Gor to stay relevant.

Talking of Abondo;the guy is improving;he now knows when to pass and when to hit from long range.Blackberry is improving and is a good attacking midfielder with short passes that can create a new attacking dimension.
