Gor Mahia through to group stages

Gor Mahia held New Star de Douala of Cameroon to a scoreless draw in the CAF Confederations cup playoff second leg. Given that Kogalo won the first leg 2-1, they have now qualified for the group stages for the second time in a row.

Additional reporting from goal.com

Goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch was the hero as Gor Mahia held New Star to a barren draw to progress to the group stages of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Oluoch pulled fantastic saves especially in the second half to save the day for the Kenyan side and help the team qualify on a 2-1 aggregate win.

The East African side came into the match aware of the position they were in, and they needed a draw of any kind to eliminate the Cameroonian side that needed a 1-0 win to qualify to the group stages for the first time in history.

Both sides started the game cautiously, each avoiding going behind and putting the team in a dangerous position. In the early exchanges, it was Arko Benjamin and Nelson Morkeu, who had good chances to get the ball into the back of the net, but they failed to capitalize on it.

Kā€™Ogalo tried to make it simple in the midfield, denying the hosts possession and opportunity to get that early goal which could have changed everything. Even in that situation, Jacques Tuyisenge, Bernard Omondi and Francis Mustafa had chances to trouble the hosts, but they were just not sure of what to do with the ball.

It opened up a little after the break and the first real chance fell to the hosts in the 49th minute. A perfect pass fell to Aristide Medjo, but with all the time in the world and just the goalkeeper to beat, he sent his effort wide.

Moments later, a half a chance fell to Boniface Omondi who cut inside, but his effort flew wide. Oluoch was called into action again on the 55th minute, this time round saving a Chamo Wanga’s deflected shot.

The hosts attacked when they had a chance to, as Gor Mahia defended with numbers to protect their slim 2-1 lead. The East African side had their custodian to thank for the numerous saves he made throughout the second half to ensure that the ball did not hit the back of the net.

It was a sigh of relief after the referee blew the final whistle to ensure that the Hassan Oktay led side reached the stage for the second season in a row.

Now what Kerr can do, oktay can also do. The boys played for themselves and they knew the consequences of not qualifying. Playing in the group stage is very important for the players. The players have realized that it’s them who are shown to the world and not the corrupt EC. They now have a chance to show case there talent to the world and also to prove to the doubters what they are capable of doing. Congratulations team Gor mahia fc for doing us proud. K’ogalo will now make himself felt in the continent. Coach oktay also have a chance to build his career against the best coaches in Africa. We’re willing to excuse him if he fails to win the sportpesa cup in Tanzania. But we will not forgive him if he fails to win the league. I can see he is a fighter on the touch line which will be good going forward. Keep it up Boys.

We thank the Lord for this victory. Gor Mahia will progress past the group stage with good preparation. Oluoch has proved that form is temporary but class is permanent. Momanyi and Joachim Oluoch has given the coach something to think about. We have depth through out the team. Imagine Oliech, Guikan and Kiplangat are still to be registered and Muguna did not even make the team to Cameroon. We will do better than many of the doomsayers expected.

The 16 qualifiers for the CCC group stage will be divided into four groups.

    • These are murky waters indeed. Class of dropouts 2019. Apart from Zambia, Sudan et Ghana the rest are “molesters”. Kama kuna Arab visit I hope it’s Morocco. The clubs are all tough, but this is all good. Time for Gor to get back into the Africa battle scene proper. Make total use of home ground. The Arab countries have mastered time wasting while playing away. Here refs have “interests” too. Gor must resuscitate the ’79 and ’87 spirit. I also will not forget the ’86 “Gor Zamalek”. Fight in the pitch and avoid emotions. Avoid scuffles during free kicks, corners etc. Remember that these clubs fear you too. Twende kazi.

Boniface Oluoch made a string of saves as the Kenyan club held New Star 0-0 in Cameroon to reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

Congratulations big Team!! I keenly took my time to watch the match in desperation praying in every bit the opponents were in possession!! Just like any other Kogalo fan who has been following the team lately, I never trusted the so said experience in goal in my at last man of the match, Boniface Oluoch but finally he showed class and maturity in goal, I believe the Cameroonians will leave to remember him the same way commentators kept on putting praises in him following his stellar performance in Malawi against Nyasa!! Momanyi fully deserves a permanent space in the first eleven, Joash Oluoch did what non believed he could do!! Batambuze, Wendo and Mbish all proved why they deserve the green/white jersey!! I loved the defensive nature of the team more so in the first half!!
Oktay, I loved the strategy he used in the whole game, playing defensively in the entire first half and capitalizing more on counter attacks which never delivered any fruit though but shielded our goal to the end!!
In the second half, he turned offensive as it made the game more open and tried to expose more the opponents inability to control our attacks!! All in all, Kudos to the entire team for proving to the world that there is also some football made in Kenya!!

These 2019 CAFF group stage teams seems to be tougher than the 2018 teams. Lastly, Gor Mahia might travel long distances to North and West Africa, which means more money will be required this year than last year. Gor Mahia need better financial preparation this year. It was not like last year where they had CECAFA teams like Yanga from Tanzania and Rayon Sports from Rwanda. A shorter travel distance.

Congratulations Team. You have done this Nation Proud. Quite a number of people were behind you when you were going for this return leg. Under the difficult situation of having to deal with suspension of your dependable players, but you did not bury your head in the sand or put your tail between your legs. Skeptics had completely ruled you out but you showed your mettle. You have shown that every player in the team is committed and ready to do their best when called to duty. For me this is a relief. This also is a wake up call to some people who always insists that certain players must always be on the pitch, circumstances will always dictate how things are organized and implemented. A feeling of indispensability must never be allowed for the team to move. For me this might just be the turning point hence forth. Of course we know that matches get tougher as you progress, but history will not ignore this achievement. They have made it times in a row and this for me counts. Kogallo Hoyeeee

This is good for Gor. The deep waters of Africa football. Lions,Bears and Sharks. No more kalongo longo relationships.
What Gor has to re-learn here is organization, training, home ground advantage, financing, home pitches etc.
Petro play total football just like Zesco lakini with hasira mingi, typical Angola, Na Hussein will probably be the worst Molesters here. In Egypt Gor will have to play against the ref too so watch out… Bad crowds.
Gor should not show fear at all. I would recommend that the living legends of Zamalek ’86 and Esperance ’87 give the current squad some pep talk.
Zesco landed it good… all non Molesters. I expect to see the best football here.

I baited my time to blog after all fake ingwe masqueraders in this site had gotten their fill of false congratulatory messages which are useless after having wished GM the worst of fates in the just concluded return leg in Cameroon. From impending immigration bans had we lost to surety of Oktay being an experiment bound to fail and doing his coaching practicals at K’ogalo since he is a 5th division paper holder with no experience etc we heard it all. God is good and rewards hardwork and faith that True followers exhibited. Now after qualifying let the “Advisors” and “financial experts” tell GM how to spend the Caf money to the last coin while also advising Coach “Oktal Oknyal” now a reborn hero how to play and win and sign players while dismissing the Thieving EC. Some like Janam likened us qualifying to me being a dreamer like DP William Ruto. Well i have borne it all from insults to innuendo’s to outright malice none has been spared from the direction of Jasego. This site is bogus if ingwe sorry fans are disguised in it to fight true GM followers and spread negativity and false support za swara tupu. • Taking into account that our 1st game in the group stages is on the 3rd of feb which is more or less 10days
from now , a bit of team management and common sense is called for , moreso on what our priority for this year is and in my opinion the sport pesa cup in Tz is not one of them , we should leave that to the likes of Sharks , Afc and Bandari who have lighter duties , lighter ambitions and have never gone to England , this tournament is only benificial to sport pesa vis a vis there financial shenigans .
I would instead give this chance to our team C or D for experience , adventure but more importantly to allow our core squad to focus .
That Sport Pesa is one challenge , the other challenge is our intransigent fans who unschoolingly expect as to participate in everything and also to win everything which is emotionally fine but pragmatically foolish , the biggest clubs in the world prioritise and their fans support and understand even when they lose the non priority cups because apart from helping to avoid injuries , it also enables the 1st team the increasingly rare opportunities to catch a breath and reboot .
In my opinion ,our priority for this season as of now is caf and the premier league
    .
As for the caf group we have been placed in , apart from the pedigree of Zemalek , this is a very winnable group , The zemalek of now is not the zemalek of old, ofcourse neither are we , but after recovering from the initial shocker when the news came out , you
will realise that tuko tu sawa .
Finally , now that the players have prooved themselves , its now our turn as fans to return to the stadium , I hear it said time without number that our fanbase runs into millions, if that be so , then surely filling the 60000 seater stadia should then not be a problem -Me and family will be there -WILL YOU .
