Gor Mahia to offer Williamson a contract extension

courtesy of the Nation

Gor Mahia will table an improved long term offer to their club head coach Bobby Williamson once the Scot returns to Nairobi on Saturday from the team’s Oloitoktok training base.

The team is currently undergoing residential training under the hawk eyes of the Scot at the remote town, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, 242 kilometres south east of Nairobi.

Club vice-chairman Faiz Magak said that they will be tabling a three year-deal offer to the highly sought after tactician with the aim of tying  him down  to the club.

Williamson’s contract with the league champions runs out in June this year after penned a one-year deal last June but Magak was unequivocal that the bespectacled former Uganda Cranes coach has his future secured at K’Ogalo.

“He (Williamson) is doing a great job. He has the focus, commitment and professionalism. His heart and soul is with the great club of Gor Mahia and that  is why he is busy  getting the boys in shape ahead of the new season.

“When the team returns to Nairobi, we will begin talks ,” he said.

Should Williamson put pen to paper on the new deal, it will stretch his stay at the Keyan glamour club until June 2017.

The 52-year-old tactician helped propel Gor to their maiden league title in 18 years last term and has in the recent past stated his unwavering commitment to the club. However this has done little to quell rumours regarding his long term future with reports of interest to lure him rife in Tanzania.

“I am happy here. Kudos to the boys for winning the league title. It was worthwhile. I want to assure that Gor will no longer wait for such a long time.

We have to make it our hobby,” he said back in November when he led the side to their league triumph.

Tanzanian league side Yanga have made contact with Gor inquiring about the availability of the former West Bromwich Albion, FC Rangers and Uganda Cranes coach and the move by the Kenyan giants is seen as a way to fend off interested suitors.

Is a 3 year contract advisable ?

It appears the irrational action by Yanga has caused Gor Mahia officials to panic.  Most coaches eventually get to the point where other teams have figured out their tactics. This is why most clubs change coaches every few years. Considering the fact that coaches often have to be changed, this author is not sure that a 3 year contract is advisable.

Secondly , it is not clear that Williamson has done enough yet to earn a 3 year deal. And what happens if two years from now, his performance is deemed unsatisfactory ? Will the club have to keep him an extra year just to honor his contract. Gor Mahia needs to think this through clearly before offering such a long extension.

GM’s bloated executive community seems 2 b reactive & not proactive. Also the panic mode means that probably the club is losing on the negotiations.
All contracts have an exit clause so admin don’t worry. E.g 2 months notice by either party required for termination. Some of these things r basic & I refuse 2 believe that EC r zombies which means that the CHAOS IS DELIBERATE, & A MEANS OF DEFRAUDING THE CLUB. FINALLY SEND SOMEONE 2 FINALIZE WITH BW BUT WE ALL KNOW ONLY AR CN DO SO, HENCE THE WAIT.

It is unwise to critisize the three years’ contract for BW. Coaches and players should be awarded long contracts. We have been giving short contracts because it is what we can afford. Long contracts are very expensive. Reports also indicates that Zico is making a come back. I think his presence will add strength to the team.

  • hmh this executive community is upto it again bringing ziko back will surely give AR legs to flee from the fans it will be total bitterness and whoever is planning this is already looking ahead to earn money through pre meditated kpl bans which are ways through which the EC normally earns money from the the club coffers and to Zedekiah keep off this current gor generation your relationship with majority of fans is so bad so just keep off i like peace so let you be informed , giving BW ling time contract is not wise if he does not perform then you pay him for job poorly done the Chelsea way . on signings being done waywardly this is clear manifestation of poor leadership and opportunism
tic way of fleecing the coffers at any given opportunity and this adds to reason why we should change the way thing are run here

Williamson has a very rich track record, why are we scared of giving him a 3 year deal. In fact if I were the one, I would have given him at least 5 years. Continuity is very critical if a club like Gor is to make any meaningful impact. This business of changing the technical bench after every single defeat cannot take any club anywhere. BW & JB 5 years contract pap!!

@Erico Jarae, you can say that again. I also get perplexed sometime by the so called Jo-Gor. I think some of us are just too used to the culture of opposing everything. Dini mar aywagra!!

Some people are so personal. Let’s give Zico another chance. Once a Gor Mahia is always a Gor Mahian. He served well as a player and as a coach. All the rest were just side shows. He is Sony Coach and it was within his right to protect Sonny. I believe you watch EPL and have seen the way former Man U coaches give their best when they are to play their former team. Stop personalising issues. As for those critical of Williamson’s tactical prowess, remember he was the Head Coach of Uganda Cranes and during his time, Cranes nearly qualified for World Cup and AFCON more than 3 times in total. Give the chap an improved deal and a long term one for that matter.

By the way for your info, Bobby Williamson has neither seen the deal nor agreed to sign so it’s just mind game where someone runs to press with un-concluded deals.

However, let us be optimistic. I don’t see anything wrong with 3 years deal just as Erico and Albert have supported.

Poor teams like Gor Mahia cannot afford to give anyone a 3 year contract much less a coach. It means that even if he underperforms, you still have to pay him for the next three years.

Rich teams can afford to do this because money is not a problem. If Moyes were to be fired from Man U today, the club will not have problems paying him for the rest of his contract even if he is doing nothing.

@ Erico and Albert thumbs up. @4 Jb i don’t agree with you at all. Who are you to tell Zico to keep off Gor? Your words are immature. If you as an individual has a bad relationship with him why implicate other fans? You should know that foot ball is like politics, where there is no permanent friendship or enemies. ‘Today you are my opponent the next day you join me’.

Kweli to support Gor you need to have a strong immune system, otherwise ulcers, migraines etc will be the order of the day. It’s here that you have an organisation without a spokesman, Without a plan for performing the smallest of tasks and one that has no memory/brain to learn from the past. As much as we fans blame the EC for the fiasco they are getting us into we are part of that confusion and from our talk we are not any better than the team therein.
Something inside me tells me that BW will not sign the new contract or if he signs will leave in June, Kenga will not come to Gor and so is Babu Kizito. Zeddy will also not come to Gor yet he could be our key to performing better this year if BW leaves. And so many other negative things but on the positive side our pedigree and pride will carry us to the summit top in Kenya again. There is something we have which unfortunately other clubs don’t have and that is not finances but the history to be the best in East Africa. BW will most probably leave for Yanga but we will get another ‘lesser’ coach who will work very hard to make us better and will we succeed. As I said before I therefore see no need to panick since we are used to making ordinary humans (coaches, players, EC) become extra-ordinary. And this will not stop because so and so left or refused to join us.
    Let us all BELIEVE

@George Ochoro, JB has right to his opinion even if you do not agree with him. This is a blogger site please.

Zico should just keep off as the temperatures are rising. These guys can kill someone. Zico will be safe in Sony that getting into unnecessary pressures from Gor Mahia fans.

George Ochoro, I know and fully persuaded that you alone nor AR can not assure Zico of security in Gor Mahia.

Do not forget, this is Gor Mahia Mr. George Ochoro

I repeat there’s nothing wrong with a 3 or even 10 year deal so long as it is performance related and has the consequent exit/termination clause.

A termination clause may/SHOULD stipulate the payment of ONLY 1/2/3 months notice period or payment of equivalent salary in lieu of notice by either party.

If the coach does not meet the benchmarks then the contract can be terminated. Benchmarks can be tight e.g winning the league,CECAFA or reaching the group stages in CAF.

If the club does not meet its side of the bargain e.g paying players on time, signing players identified by the coach i.e providing a conducive enviroment etc then the coach can also terminate the contract.

We have a top contractual lawyer as the current chair but my guess is that the way KIOSKSTYLE he runs GM is the problem. Contracts are hassled last minute with some costly results case in point Situmbeko.
If its true we are retaining BW (My policy is to judge a coach after the first 5 games with his own squad i.e after he has been through a transfer period). Last year’s winning but boring football was with an inherited squad (hence we can’t totally blame BW)
A top coach like BW chooses his team.
Maybe BW chose Ziko, if he did then its a different matter.
If he didn’t & its AR forcing in his “thurmate” then maybe BW is on his way out.
Either way I don’t think Ziko (WHY DOES AR NID A MAFIOSO IN GM) will last 2 months in GM whatever the scenario.
BUT DEAR BLOGGERS WHEN WILL WE EVER PUT FOOTBALL FIRST IN GM.

Honestly to me its only BW and Siang’a i would give a 5 year contract around here. Truly BW did wonders at UG and is set for the same at GM. Why are some of us so negative? Kwani hata respect can not be accorded to a person who won a league title with us? Coaching remains a professional venture and we can only refer to past records. The attack on BW should be softened. I will recall history where GM was ever doing something at the continental scene in the run up to the 1987 triumph and so we need a sober coach and person to build a team for africa.

  • @Kassam, I’m also lost for words when I read attacks by bloggers on our coach. What is the source and intention of this politics? Is it election related?

If I’m to contribute my own opinion, I would suggest that the Great Gor defender turned coach should come back home. I would then suggest that we send JBO to Netherlands for a full UEFA course in readiness for a Gor Legends takeover.

We must support our own who want to be coaches.

On a lighter note, I think ‘Kengruok’ is succeeding.

For a coach to succeed he needs enough time three or more years are good enough. If you can suggest two or one year how many tacticians will a team like Gor have in 5 years how will he put together the team in that short period? I can even suggest players be given 3 years and above contract period in order to compine proper chaching coaches every one or two years will never take any team anywhere. And those are my personal feelings as a Gor fun.
