Gor Mahia to play in Sportpesa cup

Ambrose Rachier with Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri and FKF CEO Robert Muthomi

Gor Mahia are among four Kenyan teams that have been invited to the inaugural Sportpesa Super cup

Online betting firm SportPesa has splashed approximately Sh6 million for the tournament tournament that will be held at the 23,000-seater Uhuru Stadium, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from June 5-11.

The eight-team tournament will involve Kenyan, Tanzania and Zanzibar teams.

The eight are : Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, champions Tusker and Nakuru All Stars will be the from Kenya.

Young African and Simba SC, and newly promoted Singida United from Tanzania and Zanzibar champions Jang’ombe Boys joining the fray.

Winners take home Ksh 2 million. Losing finalists bag Sh1 million while teams that fall at the semi-finals will pocket Sh500,000 each with those exiting the competition at the quarterfinal stage getting Sh250,000.

Speaking during the launch on Wednesday in Nairobi, SportPesa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ronald Karauri said the tournament is part of the company’s ongoing football development initiatives in the region.

Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri says the tournament is part of Sportpesa’s plan to develop football in the region.

For decades since the Gossage Cup was started in 1926, Kenyan and Tanzanian teams have been involved in classic football battles that have excited and captured the imaginations of their supporters at home and across Africa. SportPesa realised the need to bring back the glory days of these clubs by launching this tournament that will be held annually with Kenya hosting the second edition,” he said to the Nation.

The tourney winners will play English Premier league side Everton. Sportpesa are the new short sponsors for Everton.

Musonye unhappy

CECAFA chairman Nicholas Musonye is unhappy with Sportpesa over the new tournament.

We asked SportPesa to sponsor the two tournaments but they rejected. I am surprised that they are now sponsoring same factions that have been sabotaging Cecafa. They said they have no money but they are now running such a tournament,” a charged Musonye said to the Nation.

Of late , CECAFA has struggled to find hosts for either the senior challenge cup or the club cup. Both have been canceled in 2016 and likely will not be held in 2017.

This is good exposure to the team. Unfortunately being a FIFA-calendar week we will miss most of our top players. I hear Zico will be the man in charge of the team. All the best to whoever will carry the Gor flag

    • Nothing personal, but then why do we need Ze Maria?
Ze Maria needs this exposure even more than the players and/or Zico.
This is where EC gets it all wrong.
This probably means he and his entourage will be on holiday and again signings will be done without his direct input.
Anyway we must take part, and wait for him to complain about minutes not added on or teams that don’t play soccer.

  • Let Gor and Ingwe attend the tournament. They have always shunned the Mapinduzi cup.
Playing against Simba and Yanga will bring the best in Gor and a lot of lessons will be learnt.

  • the new KAGAME cup in the offing and the the death of CECAFA unfolds….nevertheless am happy whenever we are pitted against yanga and simba as this are the big boys in east africa.

time for the many fringe players like jeconiah uyoga, simiyu, maloba, osok, nondi, maqbul, mbugua , odhoji etc etc to up their ante !!!

  • But even locally we need a stable first 11 this rotation thing can’t work it just destabilizes the playing unit.A case in point is Oliver Maloba who had started commanding a regular substitution berth but now seems to have disappeared again. Same thing happened to Amos Nondi who was Kogalo’s future star midfielder..Ze Maria player development requires consistency not erratic on and off engagement that demoralizes young upcoming players…

This tenancy of loosing to kalongolongo teams must end bwana, coached by kalongolongo cooks. despicable!

  • Real test for ze Maria ,not the kalongolongo teams he plays and complains all the time about. Will he complain of the misadventures in The Arab world, west Africa? Like he does when he’s beaten by the kalongolongo teams and coaches?

  • Can you guys imagine Thika united is still talking of Gor Mahia match. This useless teams have no ambition except to lie on the ground.

A man does not live on football alone, Ze Maria needs to visit his homeland once in a while and what best time than when the local league is on recess?

Bwana JTG, stop burning? my stomach. This is an opportunity for him to test his might against (if not to learn from) his supposed-to-be peers. Look at what he does instead: he runs away. It is either arrogance or cowardice. I think he has chickened out because he realizes that playing against Simba and Young Africans is too much for a clueless manager.

  • On another sad note ingwe has signed a useless burundian amorphous striker called Alexis Kitenge for the second leg..Koro mago jomage bwana?I think this foreign quota thing should be scrapped altogether if teams insist on bringing in mediocrity in the name of professionals who end up adding no value to the Kenyan League but rather become struggling Eyesores. Kepha Aswani whom they released is much better than this person they are bringing in. GM too is not forgiven in this debacle with Mugiraneza floundering while others cannot score come rain or high water. Let those 5 positions be of people possessing quality unavailable locally not Nondescripts.

Foreign players are not the panacea for disorganized, confused and objectiveless leadership. Just leave Ogwang’ to keep on frying itself in it’s own oil. What is the point in amassing strikers without giving them games? There’ s this striker from Langata whom they have wrestled out of our hands…. I thought he was a goal making machine yet he has never featured and now they are going for more. Mara a Burundian, mara a Ugandan. This reminds me; when will our heartache Ze Maria field Jeconiah Uyoga now that our galacticos “are psychologically affected by social media contents”?

    • Yawa ati “stop burning my stomach” and “heartbreaker” Maria. But how true these days as the matches approach i get butterflies in my stomach. Vincent Oburu, was banned 6 months for double signing for GMFC & efusi.Uyoga & the GKs to me are just Odula/Rodriguez/4 million signing type tricks by Mugabe & Co. to bloat the wage bill & “milk the cash cow”. WISHING GM A WIN AGAINST P.RANGERS AS I RECALL THE MEMORIES OF OUR LAST CECAFA VICTORY IN SUDAN. MIGHTY K’OGALO WERE LED BY ASST. COACH “SONYI” AND WERE WITHOUT 7 SUSPENDED STARS BUT STILL BROUGHT HOME THE TROPHY.HEAD COACH LEN JULIANS PREPARED THE TEAM FOR THE BATTLE EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SUSPENDED

    • BB you have finished the debate with the Term ‘Galacticos’…Which kind of striker scores an average of one goal in 7 games while fielded for 90 minutes each?Even i Jasego can match that record if given those minutes in the Kogalo Jersey and even make it 2 goals if luckily i get a penalty..Now to think that is a position that is reserved for a foreigner who should possess unmatched local quality while Stephen Waruru of Ulinzi who just came back from a years absence in Peacekeeping duties has 8 Goals then you can forgive me for being irked and saying tuacheni mchezo ya akili bwana…

      • Tuyisenge should score regularly or be offloaded with Mugiraneza in June. If this comment is going to affect him psychologically then the more reason he should be history. Ronaldo gets booed in a match which i think is more brutal than social media comments but instead of being affected psychologically goes ahead to score a hatrick in the same match!!!!

Surely a foreign signing must have some exceptional qualities like we saw in Abdul Razak Fiston.

      • A person owadwa ‘Galacticos’ is a football terminology synonymous with Real Madrid whereby their Philosophy revolves around obtaining the best most expensive in-form front line pairing the world has to offer at any given time. In The First Galactico Era £68.7 million was spent by Real Madrid to sign Ronaldo De Lima and Luís Figo in the early 2000s.Second “Galácticos” Era involved signing of David Beckham and Zinadine Zidane at world record fees at the time. Third Galactico Era had Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo being signed. The latest era had Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. In contrast ours at Kogalo has Tuyisenge as we were discussing above with one goal in 12 matches and Mugiraneza….

  • If Oliech made it, Mariga made it, Wanyama did it , Calabar, Akumu, were Olunga and the list is endless ….all are doing it abroad …Why spending 4m on aperson with one goal in 10 matches? We have midfielders around who are still young and can run around than someone who was offloaded by a small team called Azam. …….
On a positive note..Migi and Tuyesenge should be released in June…At 31 a prayer should show his worth…..
