Gor Mahia to play Stima at Afraha

The Tusker Premier league match between Gor Mahia and Western Stima on Saturday 12 July that was initially planned to officially re-open Kisumu Moi stadium has now been moved to Afraha stadium according to a report on futaa.com.

Western Stima chairman Laban Jobita, has blamed the lack of sufficient progress at the Kisumu stadium.

“I am disappointed since I wanted the match to be played at the Moi Stadium Kisumu but the slow pace in renovations has forced us to have a change of plans, he told futaa.com

Jobita himself played for Gor Mahia around 1989 and 1990

The inner perimeter fence is still not complete and the main stadium has not been completed and the main stand has not been secured. Western Stima have been using Mumias Complex since Bukhungu stadium was closed and were looking forward to playing their home games at Kisumu stadium.

Playing Gor Mahia in Kisumu would have drawn huge crowds and offered a financial boon to the Kakemega based side.

Gor Mahia too have expressed interest in playing some home games in Kisumu, now that City stadium is scheduled for renovation. “I can confirm that we are seeking for an alternative venue in Nairobi but as it stands our home matches will be played in Kisumu. We don’t want to block Nairobi County’s initiative to renovate the oldest facility in Kenya,” said Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier back in May.
