Gor Mahia stormed into third round of GOtv Shield after thumping Nairobi Stima 2-0 at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The goals were scored by Enock Agwanda and Meddie Kagere to ensure that the Kenyan champions strolls all the way to the round of 16. Luke Ochieng’, Wellington Ochieng’, Chrispin Odula and Jacob Keli were given a rare start against the Nairobi power men, who had former K’Ogalo players Joel Bataro and Ivan Anguyo in their starting line-up.

The home side started the match well and in the 3rd minute, Enock Agwanda was fed the ball by Amos Nondi in the danger zone, but his effort was deflected out for a fruitless corner. In the 25th minute, Gor Mahia could have taken the lead as former Muhoroni Youth defender Wellington Ochieng’ played in a fine cross, but Agwanda was a little late to head in.

Both teams played cautiously, with Gor Mahia playing unusual long balls which were dealt with by their opponents. In the 42nd minute, Ivan Anguyo could have scored for Stima as the Ugandan took control of the ball in the box, but his effort was close to Jerim Onyango in goal.

A minute to the break, Enock Agwanda was fed in the box by George Odhiambo, but he failed to control the ball and the goalkeeper Bataro calmly collected it. The first goal however, arrived in the 48th minute. Musa Mohammed played a long ball to Agwanda, who did well to put it past a hapless Bataro.

Stima reacted well trying to push for an equalizer and they should have been rewarded at least a free-kick just outside the box later on as Wellington Ochieng seemingly fouled the opponent, but the referee played on.

It was a costly let off later as substitute Meddie Kagere ensured Gor Mahia qualify for the third round. Francis Kahata, who had taken Odula’s place, provided an assist for the rushing Kagere, who powered home a thunderous header.

Gor Mahia: Fredrick Onyango, Wellington Ochieng, Abouba Sibomana, Musa Mohammed, Luke Ochieng, Crispin Odula, Amos Nondi, Anthony Mbugua, Jacob Keli, George Odhiambo, Enock Agwanda.

Subs: Sammy Okinda, Eric Ouma, Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth, Francis Kahata, Baron Oketch, Meddie Kagere.

  • Stima was a worthy opponent and we had to dig deep for the victory. Kudos to everyone who worked for the win. Odula is okay but faded off( lack of match fitness or age issues perhaps?) Mbugua was superb and if he stops being too much in a rush will make a great midfielder. Too early to be sure seeing that Gaucho also impressed in his debut only to fade into oblivion. And why does Luke make so many mistakes? He gifted the opponent the ball in our half more than three times and would have lived to rue it were we playing a more ruthless opponent. Wellington is solid but was a tad reckless. Almost conceded a penalty and was a candidate for a red card had the referee been not so level headed. Nondi is one skilled lad who needs just to work on his consistency…Musa overcame his early jitters to post another composed performance…As for the other starters……nothing to smile about!!

    • @musymo, Luke is not a material for Gor Mahia. He is being fielded to please the technical bench members like Tom Ogweno and Jolawi Obondo.

Kudos to Nairobi Stima they displayed GOOD FOOTBALL tactically and otherwise. Their striker is of high quality. Kudos to Kogalo for standing equal measure and for sailing trough to round 16 of the GO Tv shield.

Agwanda must improve or GO ON LOAN. We can’t have a striker who misses 6 chances and scores only 1. His contribution will NOT be limited to throwing long balls. Yeye Na Kelli waprlekwe loan.

  • It was hard to notice that yesterday’s outfit was somewhat new since they gave a good account of themselves. Still wondering why Wellington Ochieng played 90 minutes, the coach must have lacked a red object in his pocket. Calabar junior should have started ahead of Musa so as to test a completely new squad. Who are we facing next in this ‘Gor’TV thing? When are we playing our next KPL opponents?

unbeaten and generally doing well under Bernard Mwalala…but we will deal with them when the time comes. We must first negotiate past SoNy and others in the league before we meet them.

We ended the first leg of KPL on great form and excellent football. Gor Mahia need to rediscover this form and play attractive football. I know Aucho left a big gap that has not been filled and the sooner the Technical Bench changes tactics, the better for the club to successfully defend the title. We need to be aggressive in all departments and non performers should be relegated to the bench.

Airtel Arising Stars (ARS) is kicking off today in Kisumu and I hope Gor Mahia has send technical members to watch the rising stars. This is where Eric Marcelo was spotted and we need to get two or three players from this secondary schools tournament.

EC should despatche scouts to this tournament.

I watched the match against Nairobi Stima and there was a former Gor Mahia Youth Teddy Osok that was better than most of the Gor Mahia player. Why did Gor Mahia released such a good talented player?

    I have the following questions:-
    – Why are we selling or letting go our youth players at the expense of some players that can’t even control the ball? Something is really wrong with EC and Technical bench to let our talented youthful players join other clubs like Mathare.
    – Why are we building Mathare, Nairobi Stima and other teams?
    – Why can’t we give these young lads contracts?
    – Do we policy on Gor Mahia youth Programme?

If we can’t integrate our youths to the main team, why should we have youth Programme in place? We do not want showbiz with the team but a clear process of integrating the youth team into the main team and this will save Gor Mahia a lot of money in signing fees.

The truth is that the youth in the Junior team have no contracts and can therefore leave anytime. Maybe that’s good for them since Gor can only take one or two per year
