History repeats itself as Gor Mahia beat AFC 3-0, Lift Super Cup

In 1985 in Khartoum, Gor Mahia playing without six players who had been suspended by CAF and CECAFA, beat much fancied rivals AFC 2-0 to lift the CECAFA club cup. In 2017, Gor Mahia are the champions of the inaugural Sportpesa Super Cup after beating arch rivals AFC by a 3-0 score. The goals came from Timothy Otieno in the 59th minute and Oliver Maloba in the 72nd minute and John “Softie” Ndirangu in the 91st minute.

AFC Leopards had hoped for revenge against K’Ogalo who beat them 3-0 in a Premier League fixture in May, but their bid fell flat out with a horrible second half performance against a half strength Gor side.

The 15-time Kenyan Premier League champions were missing up to eight first team players, but it didn’t show a bit against an Ingwe side who were almost full strength with the only first team absentees being Robinson Kamura and injured Mungai Kiongera.

Gor, the only side in the tournament to win their previous knockout games in regulation time was the better of the two finalists and Ingwe struggled to create clear cut chances.

Head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira had returned to the touchline after missing the two previous matches and it gave the side a morale booster with most of the second choice players seeing an opportunity to impress the boss.

Meddie Kagere, crowned the tourney’s top scorer had the earliest chance of the game, but he missed a header by inches when he rose to meet a Wellington Ochieng cross. Innocent Wafula also had a header go wide from Francis Kahata’s delivery.

Salim Abdallah came to AFC’s rescue in the 26th minute when he cleared a few centimeters off the line after Francis Kahata’s lob had beaten Ian Otieno.

Timothy Otieno had a superb opportunity in the 34th minute when he was picked out by Kagere inside the box, but he could not get a meaningful shot on the ball, his effort going wide.

Allan Katterega had Ingwe’s best chances of the game, but both went begging. In the 36th minute, his well struck shot from the edge of the box went straight to keeper Fredrick Odhiambo while five minutes later, a header from a Marcus Abwao cross went over.

Gor came from the half time break breathing fire in attack. George Odhiambo had a shot in the 48th minute saved by Otieno before Kenneth Muguna rattled the crossbar with a well struck 52nd minute freekick.

On the hour mark, the 15-time KPL champions broke the deadlock when Otieno paid up for all his missed chances in the first half, striking a low shot into the bottom right of Otieno’s goal.

Ten minutes later, AFC’s Duncan Otieno came close to an equalizer but his rasping shot from the edge of the box was saved by Odhiambo in the Gor goal.

With barely three minutes on the pitch, substitute Maloba made it 2-0 with a simple touch into the net from an Odhiambo cross. AFC were punished after losing the ball cheaply in attack and Gor initiated a counter which bore the goal.

Ndirangu then crowned off the afternoon with a well struck effort from the edge of the box, also after just having come in.

  2. Too early guys let’s not take that direction, let’s not attack players individually and directly like that. But congratulations to the boys I am liking it even more coz Ingwe was at full strength and seven of our first team were away. Tarang taaaa…ta…titiing, hahaha

  3. GREAT GREAT GREAT,glory be to the Almighty for enabling K’ogalo to win this cup.Koeman be warned, this is gor mayienga.l really fancy this wonder kid called Maloba,if given a chance and exposed by Kogalo, the boy may play in Europe very soon.Everton come baby come.

  4. Congrats to our team;kumbe we have s strong reserve.Maloba,Nondi,Ndirangu,Philemon, mbugua yet we get to some painful 0-0 games.Let the coach take more risk and congrats to Zico and Ze Maria for bringing in a new philosophy in Gor

  5. Look at Joash,Look at Philemon/Mbugua, Look at Maloba, look at the Ndirangu, look at Odhiambo.People like Odhiambo can never disappoint coz they wish for that one chance. This squad is good but to conquer Africa add some very good foreign players worth their money.Gor fans deserve and demand the best.Congrats and yes Gor Vs Everton;even Kenyans who don’t watch Gor Mahia due to ich lit will watch this.

  6. Amor Hahaha Ametho Club Billicanas Dar who will join me…Ingwe coach Dorine Morine said Gor Is Nothing To Him now he knows Mayienga Koko is everything in Kenya. We shake even the unshakeable…Mit nade nii…I said it to ingwe and will repeat to Everton Come Baby Come… We are waiting patiently to show you one or two things…Congrats to the team and TB for this one special mention to Zico for bringing us thus far and Maria for getting an identical 3-0 double scoreline on ogwang…Hatuna huruma na mtu but in Nasa we are together mashemeji take heart…Mungu awalinde

  7. As i said before and some doubting Thomases never believed me…
When Romanian man said that For is nothing I told him to wait….
Now let him wait for the second leg…..

  8. By the way shemeji, take heart we are together in that other thing….yaaani we are still brothers for August and beyond.

  9. Well done K’Ogalo. Good for Ze Maria to “rush back and save face”.We are now the blue eyed boys of SP. Let’s build on this.

  10. Kogallo antidote to success ??? Harambee stars need to play more regularly and ze maria needs to go on leave more often….success surely will come !

  11. yes its official;gor mahia vs everton.Everton i know you will come with tiki taka but kogalo will come with both tiki taka and jodala style hence be warned.

  12. Here comes the Gor Mahia that I know about; killing teams when it matters a lot. After the 1st goal, Efusi really pushed hard for an equalizer but got hit with two clinical goals they weren’t expecting.

  13. These three boys were terrific today, Philemon Otieno, Wafula Innocent and Maloba. This team will tear apart any Premier League team anytime. Tactically and technically, Gor Mahia were superior all the day long. We welcome Dorina to Kenya and next time he must know people!!!!

  14. Guys like in every fairy tale run there is always the unsung hero who pulls strings from the background but doesn’t get the spotlight. In UEFA Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid it was one Luka Modric who marshalled the entire Madrid midfield to set up goals and dominate possession. IN Gor SuperCup run it is none other than Goalkeeper Peter Odhiambo who made some very decisive clinical saves. Might not seem obvious to all but that boy was stable, composed, hardworking and hawk-eyed vigilant in goal.Opponents tried him but he was spot on through out. Hongera sana kijana ongeza bidii…

    1. Sure I was also impressed by the golie as I watched the match. I am just wondering why Oluoch is dominant between the goal posts and yet we have such talent.

  15. Well done to Gor for the podium finish…we celebrate that achievement and hope that we will build on from that fantastic achievement.
To Ian Otieno the Afc keeper…next time please show some purpose and ambition, stop wasting time when the game is still nilnil.and in the 1st halfLook how humiliated you were, trying to preserve the scoreline in the hope that the game will go into a penalty shootout and that you will save some penalties…one sunny day does not make a summer!!!

  16. KUDOS to the boys, the technical team and the adoring fans!
We thanks Almighty God for the sweet victory over Ingwe in Dar.

In victory and glory, in defeat and agony Kogalo for Ever!

  17. Hi Comrades!!!!, its good we now have two trophies but the focus should now be on KPL and Everton. however Our Shemeji also tried and made us sweat it was upto the second half that things went out of their hands but that is football. it rolls all over and can go either way.

  18. Is it true that Collins Okoth’s contract was not renewed and he was allowed to go away?
Such is the fate that befalls big-headed footballers. Which club will absorb him now?
Erick Ochieng was also dropped from his club.
Timonah Wanyonyi was also dropped. What happens to these boys when given a chance at Gor then they take it for granted?
I can’t wait to see Collins joining some Mumbi Nacional simply to keep his soccer dreams afloat.

  19. As for Dorine Moreen, thanks for accepting the 6-month contract that I can foresee ahead of you.
Your opening match heralded the barrage of goals that your team will comfortably absorb under your watch.
