Hooliganism is deplorable and unnaceptable

The recent events at Nyayo stadium where the match between Gor Mahia and Posta Rangers that ended in abandonment of the match is as deplorable as it is unnacceptable.

To recap, Kogalo were down 0-3 after being comprehensively outplayed by the upstart rangers. Irate fans started to toss objects onto the field. The match was halted upon which fans broke into the field. Police fired tear gas and the players, fans and officials alike scampered for safety.

One would think that after the tragedy of a few months ago when several fans died due to unruly behaviour, fans would have learned a lesson. Clearly they have not. What fans must realize is that this kind of behavior hurts the team significantly. Clubs like Gor Mahia are increasingly dependent on gate collections. Yet this kind of behaviour discourages casual fans and even some hard core fans from attending. Fans should strive to create a friendly atmosphere that would make it safe for entire families including young children to attend matches. They after all are the future fans base.

Getting sponsorship has become increasingly possible for many sports teams all over the country as companies seek to cash in on returning crowds. Rugby clubs such as Harlequins and Mwamba are cashing in from sponsors. Even Kisumu Rugby FC with its paltry fan base now has a sponsor. Yet Kogalo with its vast fan base cant attract sponsors. A significant reason is fan behaviour as sponsors tend to shy away from being associated with hooliganism. I am not excusing the club officials after all they havent done a good job of marketing the club with potential sponsors but the events of last Saturday sure do not help.

So what needs to be done ? Fans should start by policing each other. Yours truly remembers sometime in the early 90s when “General” Maurice Odanga then the leader of fans at Russia successfully prevailed upon fans not to engage in stone throwing. This was at a time when the epidemic of hooliganism was at its apex with virtually every other match being abandoned.  Most fans are not interested in unruly behavior. Why not start a campaign against hooliganism in the terraces. And If you know any of those goons who appeared in the papers, grab him by the scruff of his neck and talk some sense into him.

Rather than turn their ire onto the match in progress, fans should channel their anger by holding peaceful demonstrations against club officials or any else responsible for the clubs perceived poor performance. Hooliganism like this absolves those directly responsible for the clubs performance i.e the club officials and the technical bench.

The scenes at Nyayo were quite sad. I personally believe these “fans” are just hooligans who have a saturday afternoon out. We should adopt the EPL method of punishing individuals who are captured on tape. It will deter similar characters.

it is so annoying that after successfully winning back the confidence of the once lost game, there are still a few amidst us who want to taint the name of the club. please let us ganner courage and slam the doors on them. we came with our children, wives and loved ones only to be ridiculled by this crazy, sick people.
Thats not what we want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Where did they get stones from? the guy on yesterday’s nation newspaper is a frequent disturb.

hey guyz, as long as we feel exploited why should Gor matches gate collection be Kshs400 and Kshs 100, whether away or home. this raises our expectations and we demand less humuliation in terms of defeat and more in terms of team performance, let us be treated as other funs and not as cash cows

What happened on saturday was shameful to say the least.Constructive criticism is the way forward. Things were bad on Saturday, and that brought out the bad side of the coach. He did not seem to have anticipated that the Rangers team would have Joseph Nyaga, Kevin Ochieng the never aging Pascal, and Edward Kauka. Those are players a good coach must provide a proper antidote for. Zico didn’t and that was it , a thorough thwak. To fans of Kogalo, BURE KABISA, you do not do that kind of thing in an internationally relayed match even if you are trailing by how many goals. Very big teams get beaten not once but severally but they go away humbly to fight another day. Some of you do not quite undestand the meaning of fair competition. IT WAS STUPID AND WHEN I THOUGHT WE HAD LEFT ALL THAT BEHIND.Our wives ,mothers, sisters and young kids were starting to love coming to the stadia to watch local football AND NOW THIS. I am a true supporter of Kogalo but I shudder to think of what Moni Wekesa committee will mete out this time.LEARN YOU FANS, PLEASE LEARN AND CHANGE, WE WANT TO WATCH OUR LOVED TEAM IN PEACE. For coach what will you give in your next game if we are not banned totally?

You cant take kids to the stadium if their security is in danger of flying missiles. Am a Gor fan but this was primitive and pre-historic! STONE age to say the least!

There is a talk contributory neglegence in some quarters, truly its wrong and terribly immature to watch such horrible darkness associated with our beautiful club..its a disgrace to our predecessors from whom we inherited this big idea/institution from THE MIGHTY KOGALO..but we must also note that rumours of players being sidelined and discriminated against are with the fans so much that.. born hooligans and drunkards use to stir emotions which go overboard when things go bad like on sato..the tech bench should also be surcharged…

I’VE BEEN A DIE HARD GOR FAN SINCE EARLY EIGHTIES, BUT THIS SAT RANGERS BEAT US FAIR & SQUARE, THERE WAS NO NEED TO THROW MISSILES & SPOIL THE GAME!!! THIS MADNESS SHOULD END NOW!!!!!!!

From the comments posted above it seems everybody is not happy with the coach and some of the fans. I agree with all of you 100%. Where is the solution to this? We assume most of the fans are reading this site and contribute? Is there a way to reach out to them (fans that might not have access to this site) and tell them exactly how we feel.Where did those stones come from? Do have stones laying within and without the field? If this is the case then this is stadia management problem. security at the entrance need to ensure nothing of sort is brought into the field. For the coach give him some time, sometimes we learn from our mistakes, lets judge him after the next few games, he has done the team some good. This was a slip and please let him correct the mistake.

@ oburu, who the hell do u think u r? after throwing stones and making kogalo play in an empty stadia do u think it is fare to Gor and the players? Omera engage ur brain first before u engage in unnecessary violence, who told u that it’s only via chest thumping, threatening and throwing stones u can be heard? Dont u realize that whatever happened on satarday has brought alot of shame on Gor’s flag? potential sponsors have confirmed their worst fears! any fan who was thinking of joining Gor movement will now think again. Apart from just loosing on satarday we have become the laughing stock of the city coz so many were not happy when we raised the standard so high. Thanks to people like u we are back down, 3 years of hardwork to improve the clubs image is down the drain. Firing the coach is nothing, Arsene of arsenal just lost the carling cup to a midtable team should he be fired? Oburu (ring ka igoyo machemo) look behind as u run coz u might run too fast and leave everyone behind (think about it)

Every GOR supporter/fan should take it upon himself to educate the kind of hooligans I saw on TV that they are doing a great disservice to Kneyan football and above all to the players. Who will come to the stadium to watch football if stones are expected to fly any time, and where will income to the clubs come from and which sponsor will come on board to an empty stadium

  • BTW THESE SO CALLED “HOOLIGANS” HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE HEART OF GM. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT MEDIOCRACY AND LET THE COACH, PLAYERS AND OFFICIALS KNOW IT IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FOLLOWED GM’S HISTORY YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT IT IS THESE PASSIONATE FANS WHO HAVE “DISCIPLINED” PREVIOUS ERRANT COACHES, OFFICIALS AND A FEW PLAYERS WHO FELT THEY WERE INDISPENSIBLE AND WERE BIGGER THAN MIGHT KOGALO,THE CLUB. WHEN GM WAS IN THE DOLDRUMS IT IS THESE FANS WHO STUCK BY THE TEAM SINGING AND CHANTING PRAISES TO ENCOURAGE THE TEAM. GOR IS NOT AN ELITIST BUT A POPULAR CLUB FANS MUST BE GIVEN A PROPER AVENUE TO EXPRESS THEIR DISSAPPOINTMENT IMMEDIATELY THINGS GO WRONG. (I AGREE THAT A GREAT TEAM LIKE GOR DO OCCASSIONALY LOSE A GAME BUT THE GOR OF SATO DISPLAYED 3RD RATE SOCCER WITH 3RD RATE TEHNICAL ADVICE)SATO’S LOSS MAYBE A SYMPTON THAT SOMETHING MAY BE SERIOUSLY GOING WRONG AT GM AND THE FANS MUST HAVE NOTED IT. OFFICIALS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO USE SATO’S FIASCO TO DEFLECT ATTENTION FROM THE FACT THAT,AND I REPEAT, SOMETHING COULD BE SEROIUSLY GOING WRONG AT OUR BELOVED GM.

Further, a good number of us accessing it are rather enclosed to a large extent in a cocoon and out of touch with the hooligan’s reality. The solution rests squarely with the management of GM(and I wonder whether they are in touch with reality). If the issues are not resolved – technical bench, alleged tribalism in player selection, thinking that GM will ever be an elitist club, let us all be prepared to take the shock that is awaiting us in the next months. I’d advise the faint-hearted not to invest emotionally in GM for the foreseeable future. Think about it – how many times have you thought the leaders of this country are out of touch with reality. On sponsorship, which corporate entity in their right mind would associate itself with GM – it would taint its name! GM’s future lies in the Fans (including our hooligans – they are not going away any time soon) and fan base and it is only management incorporating your views and ideas as applicable that can elevate our beloved GM to higher heights. We should be thinking of how to compel management to steer the club in the right direction and individuals stepping into the trenches to make that change that we so crave for. Oh, and anyone sitting in Centre Stand will definitely not see that Nyayo and City stadium is littered with stones and debris.

WE have said what we could say. Now to KPL, yuo know that you cannot lump every body together, quite a big number of supporters are actually innocent and would like to see sanity in and around the stadia, during and after the matches. I know there could be a lot of push from the external to punish the club heavily so as to make other people elsewhere feel it. You know what I mean, OTHERS who are pushing a different agenda completely. This is the beginning, and I suppose you may want to send a strong message this early. A STRONG WARNING MAY JUST DO and I beliefve club official will embark on proper education for thie supportes on matters of discipline. Lets move on together.

  • one thing that is evident with that saturady is thatGor funs resolved to sit in “Russia” because of high gate charges at centre stand which is historically know to be a hotspot, there needed to be adequate security. One way of managing future problems is to make the stadium affordable including the “centre stand”. Can KPL regulate the gate charges and require all clubs without discrimination to charge the same gate charges

  • What is the route cause of hooliganism in the pitch? I think we need to know what happened. Was it poor fielding? Was it poor coaching techniques? Was it the result? Was it holiday period? I think it was poor coaching and fielding that made fans to vest their anger. This hooliganism will still happen if corrective measures are not put into consideration. It is my own opinion that Zico is not a good material to handle Gor Mahia. Gor does not need a coach that will take sides and victimise certain players. Where were Makori, Kevo, Colo, Ivan, Wekesa, Owiti? Whether we like it or not unless some drastic measures are taken, Gor might not perform better this year due to indeciveness of the office and lack of committment of the coach. The office is also to be blamed. Before the KPL kick off, the executive committee was supposed to have convened a special general meeting to educate the fans and to fans plan of action for the year 2011. It appears there are burning problems within the Executive Committee and technical bench of the club. My recommendation are the following:-
    1. The Chairman need to call for a special general meeting (SGM) for members to air their grivances regard ing how the club is being run. Some members of the Executive Committee need to reform themselves. They need not to behave like youthwingers of the famous baba na mama fame.
    2. Some official are taking advantage of the club predicament by fleecing the club left, right and centre. This can be confirmed by the self interest in procuring the club merchandise (replica jersey) which was taken away from the previous supplier and given to one of the official. Why all these selfish interests?
    3. Zico to consider coaching Gor Mahia or Harambee Stars. One job at a time. Now Harambee stars are preparing for Nations cup, how will Zico balances his time. We need him more in Gor than Harambee Stars.
    4. Zico must stop victimisation of certain players. I know many people wont like this but it is a fact that must be addressed amicably.
    5. I read some comments last year by some fans on Zico performance after Sofapaka match. Many fans dismissed him but can you see the result and you will see more results like what happened on Saturday? Does the coach care anymore since he has a well being job with Harambee Stars?
    6. Mwakio is just a fan from Coast and I have been attending all matches of Gor all the way from Voi and Gor does not belong to Zico or Chairman.

Some comments are real.. that is without pretence or politics of sycophancy..you may dismiss the two comments from Oburu & Oduori but we all are concious that violence is never accepted..i wish to mention the following briefly though:
    1. There are rumours that some players r e paid as low as between 5k & 14 K IN THE KENYA OF TODAY THAT SHOULD HURT ALL TRUE FANS.
2.It is evident some good players are being sidelined..Where is owiti, Wekesa, Makori, Kitawi, Tony, Kagunzi,Kiplangat..and where are the students recruited during the Nyanza pre season tour?
    3. My branch officials have not been able to meet the so called officials since the season ended and all meetings were post poned from week to weeek!
    4. It hurts when some of us say that some fans do not assist or are not willing to assist the club but scare the sponsors away with stones..how much is needed to run the club? how much was spent last season and Gor Mahia being a public property how much did all branches contribute last season n how much is needed..still what were the gate collections?
5 As we condemn the violence one of us mentioned that fans should be given a forum to air their views which we’ve given to our branches but the office is not ready to give them audience so they cud discuss with us the developments its very bad.. mark you the way i may not throw any stone does not make my neighbour to refrain if people cannot be led just know they may not be scared.
6.I sympathise alot with the so called Zico guy. this man has a chance to move to the next level but why has he allowed himself to be associated with nepotism in a professional office like coaching Gor..why is this jersey no. 22 playing? is he the best GM can afford?

Lastly as i save other observations for another day..Let these officials know they’re fully responsible for the violence a public property caanot be run on tenets of arrogance .. i did not throw any stone, neva wished i did .. but mgt and the so called coach must change.

  • Agwa Kassam, what you have pointed out are the naked truths. I can not imagine loosing a game that we should have won easily. Hooliganism is going to reoccur again if things and club affairs are not done properly and transparently. I Mwakio have declared to run for the Secretary General position even if elections are called this year, next year or 2013. There is a reason why I’m going to do this:-
    1. We need secretariat where fans can be allowed to air their grivances and get update on the happenings at the club.
    2. Secretarial duties should not be mixed with financial responsibilities.
    3. Secretary should not behave as a youth winger.
    4. Secretary should be up-to-date with all administrative functions.

On Zico, the guy should be relieved of his duties. The club has become too big for Zico to handle.

Please mark my word that there will be more violence should Zico continue to field mediocre squad that has his relative (no 22 Wycliffe) and friends (12 Denise Wise).

As Kassam puts it, where was owiti, Wekesa, Makori, Kitawi, Colo, Kevo, Ivan, Tony, Kagunzi,Kiplangat..and where are the students recruited during the Nyanza pre season tour? Have they been sold? Owiti & Kiplangat are outright strikers. Ivan is a good defensive midfielder/defender, Kitawi and Makori are great midfielders/wingers/strikers. These duo cannot be compared to No.22. Colo and Kevo are the best midfielders in the country. Why frustrate them Zico?. Wekesa is a great defender let Collins Omondi understudy him.

Chairman, have you investigated this? Could you respond to these supporters concerns please, it is really disturbing. It appears somebody wants to destroy overnight what we have together built over the last three years, and who could this be? The coach? A section of officials or some external forces? Someone correctly mentioned that we begin to die when we keep mum on important issues and the Big book puts it plainly that if you can sport danger n fail to shout then the blood of the victims shall be on your head!
I’ll never fail to comment on the next elections.. fans never again should we put into the office an aspiring politician!
I personally have defended deployment of one of our own to head important ideas like Gor Mahia but now for the sake of giving opportunity to our talented youngsters from upcountry who also deserve a chance in the green army.. Zico is not upto the task..doing away with recruited students who could have been developed shows this guy is simply arrogant and lacks professional awareness..if anything was black berry playin in any team in Nairobi..he’s a talent that we must dig deeper into the country to identify!
I’ll still mention this Sofapaka guy is positive in his approach to football..its not a secret he’s p[aying his players very well if its true we give pocket money to our players why are we talking about winning the league..lets leave it to Tursker, Sofa, Ingwe and the rest..coz only committed players can ever win the league..we are just an academy .
Professionalism does not begin from the winds just giving details of receipts n expenditure should not cause a problem to the office and coming up with a budget to be presented for financing shopuld not be hard..someone is just being arrogant n untrustworthy . I’ll not be vying for any seat but its trully pathetic a community that has been blessed with professionals cannot come out n run their affairs fairly with transparency.

What we need to do as fan is change the way we do things and our behaviuors. We need a 360% turn; for example we should focus on how to exert pressure on the executive wing of Gor Mahia in a non violent way to achieve better results or drive home a point. That would include forming a forbidable team to intervene on behalf of the branches. One lose does not mean we have lost the league going by last seasons statistics. Alcoholism is another disease that is controlling our fans. An intoxicated mind can make sporatic decisions, before you know, damage has been done. Gor is reffered to as a LUO club, though I saw alot of other tribes supporting the same. Because of this, tghe Prime Minister is loosing votes as a result of irresponsible behaviuor. Guys let us re-evaluate ourselves and indfluence positivelt our brothers and sisters in Gor’s family. Mat the lord bless all of you. Amen.

My dear fans why are we shouting oursleves hoarse? What is the problem? Why are we making strange allegations. Gor has only lost one match but most of contributors here are sounding like Kogallo has lost 5 matches in a row. Zico is the very coach who was in charge of the team last season. Why are we creating crisis where there is none. Why do some of you think that Kitawi et el must be fielded in every match. Is he match fit? He must earn his position in the starting lineup. Lets learn to be patient na tuwache siasa za changaa kwa mambo ya Kogallo. Even Real Madrid were white washed 5-0 but I didnt hear comments like the ones I am reading in this forum. The very fans who are advocating stone throwing contribute nothing to the club yet the make the loudest noise when Gor loses. They even have the audacity to say that Gor does not need a sponsor, yet they are the very ones complaining that the players are earning peanuts. What exactly do “fans” want. Lets be civil.

  • Albert do not refer us to changa holdrums. What are being pointed out are true and it is upon the office to put every in the office in order. What happened in the pitch can be avoided with the right fielding and coaching technique but not experimenting like what zico did. New players can be introduced to the gradually but not fielding all the 5 players in match like this. Suggestions by the fans is for the office to either look at the cause of unrest in the fans or the office can decide to ignore. Some comments are unpalatable but good for the office, particularly the chairman to take charge at the helm of the club. Kosero stop this sycophancy and point out areas that the office, zico and fans can improve on.
