Kevin Omondi, Paul Were sent packing

Kogalo fans hope that Kevo will learn a lesson and not follow in Gattuso’s footsteps

Gor Mahia’s Kevin Omondi and Paul Were of AFC Leopards have been suspended from Harambee stars and sent home from camp. The two speedy wingers who frequently showed the South Sudan defenders a clean pair of heals were equally adept at escaping from the Harambee stars camp. The duo were suspended after they sneaked out of camp without permission after having been paid their allowances.

For Paul Were, this is not the first time he has been suspended for such behavior. Back when he was selected to play for the national U-20 side, coach Vincent Ombiji had no option but to suspend him. At the time Were was missing from camp, Ombiji was frantically calling him on his cell phone. When he finally reached him, he (Ombiji) could here loud music in the background. Thus despite Were pretending to be at home, Ombiji knew he was out clubbing.

For Kevin Omondi, this his first disciplinary faux pas. Kogalo fans will hope that he will have learned his lesson from this experience. FKF Chairman Sam Nyamweya has announced that further sanctions await the duo at club level. The flip side however is that Omondi can come back home and rest his muscles in readiness for next season.

The Effect of alcohol on sportsmen

Because it has now been reported that Omondi and Were were intoxicated with alcohol when they returned, it is worth visiting reasons why alcohol and footballers should not mix and hope that other players are reading:

1. Alcohol causes dehydration which takes several days to recover from.
2.  Alcohol decreases in testosterone are associated with decreases in aggression, lean muscle mass, muscle recovery and overall athletic performance.
3. Alcohol will also impair reaction time and mental acuity for up to several days
4. Alcohol consumption causes large amounts of lactic acid to be produced, this results in decreased energy, decreased muscle recovery, and increased muscle soreness and makes a player more prone to muscle injuries.

In Summary

Having said all this, it must be mentioned that this is Omondi’s first transgression. He is not a rogue player and if given good advice, he will learn from this. The man is talented but as of yet has not fulfilled his potential. Continuing to behave like this will hinder his progress. As has been noted above, alcohol severely hinders a players chances of fulfilling their potential. Lets hope he styles upp and focuses on becoming the best that he can be.

Hii lazima ilikuwa influnce ya Were ndiyo anakwaga na tabia mbaya………Why did you do this MASTER why??????????? SHAMEFUL any psychologist to help this boy before he turn himself into another Gatusso. Hope FKF will handle this proffesionally and not rush into decisions which will affect the two for the rest of their lives.

Roho Safi: Players should have fun but also obey the rules. If a player goes out drinking he may be too hung over to practice kesho yake. These gusy should have waited until the team was eliminated before kwenda maziara.

Kevin Omondi have really let me down. Fans will recall how this player won my admiration to a point where i was to engrave his jersey number on mine. I sincerely thought that Kevo was keenly following the footsteps of Celtic mercurial midfielder, Victor Mugubi Wanyama.

    I was wrong.

The news that the duo, Gor Mahia’s Kevin Omondi and AFC Leopards, Paul Were were sent back home for gross misconduct is a big shame not only for Gor Mahia but also to Harambee Stars. The pair were sent on national duty. Their life, whether in public or private must bring honor and dignity and not shame and disgrace as they did.

I personally support firm action to the two at the club level as suggested by FKF chairman , Sam Nyamweya. This also bring to the fore the lavish lifestyle of some of these players. It is disheartening how these players blew off their hard earned cash through extravagant behaviours such as too many swallows ( to use the words of wahome mutahi) and women. And that is why many end up paupers at the end of their careers.

One sure way to correct this boys to send them to the National Youth Service ( NYS). Perhaps they could learn a thing or two patriotism and displine. As for the remaining squad, our prayers are with you during the CECAFA quarter finals.

Pareiyo , thanks for the comprehensive piece above.

I too have admired Kevo ever since i saw him in K’ogalo jersey, right back when he played against Kampala City City Council in a friendly match at the City Stadium.

I am so disappointed. I support extra ordinary disciplinary action at the club and National level.
I must mention too that the effect of a bad moralled coach is coming to the fore, remember a coach once handled these guys rummoured to be an addict, these are the effects.

Kudos to Admin for highlighting the alcoholic effects on sportsmen. This is objective.

Kevo, again, what have you achieved to make you misbehave at the national level? If you can mess up yourself with these tens of money, then what woul happen if you were to join the real paid ranks?

    Non sense!

@Motema Pembe above, with all due respect. i repeat i don’t hold monopoly of what bloggers should post here, but just a question. What did GM win in the 90’s to write home about? I think GM began the down turn in the 90’s.

Could this partying and playing(indiscipline be the reason) There is an expert annalysis up there for all to learn from.As a former player a lot of people (especially players) expect better moral advice on and off the pitch from you.

    Just a question/comment, sir.

This was really shameful behaviour by all standards. For Were, his performance had really deteriorated because of such behaviour; as for Kevo, everyone has been shocked to hear this. We really expected to show Ethipia dust with Were and Kevo running in both flanks but now his hope is gone and therefore this chance has to be given to other players.

At club level, there is no need for further disciplinary measures since the duo were on National duty and not club assignment.

I hope we will take this CECAFA trophy this time round.

To my fellow bloggers one thing that has come out clearly is that our players are young and very active and the thing we should do is to appreciate them. We need mentors and role models to the boys and with proper guidance and encouragement I believe that they will go far.Kevo is still ours and he has apologized publicly why not accept his apology and advice him accordingly. I believe our assistant coach bobby has a lot of work to do when it comes to mentoring our boys.

@jahkoremo I’m also disheartened by what transpired, and I know loga is strict and doesn’t tolerate such behaviours but he asked to be forgiven.maybe he has learnt his lesson.it also depends on the company he had on tht day. Usife moyo just go to kampala and cheer our squad.I still believe with the right mentor he will still go places. Naelewa ameharibu cv ya gor bt he is sorry.

@ 4 motema pembe – why was the GM team manager Tom Ogweno shown the door? It was because he took players for lunch 2 hrs before our match with Thika United and we ended up losing the match. As coach, Nandwa and any other coach knows the right diet, place to sleep and mindset to have before every match and that’s why he can’t just let players move left-centre-right and think it’s business as usual. Je ingekuwa wewe ungewambia players waende wa-have fun?

@12 JAHKOREMO – if you had planned to go to Kampala there is no need of canceling the trip because of Kevo and ‘maybe’ Were. There are enough players in the camp and if it’s a matter of GM players then we still have Lavatsa, Rama & David Owino save for the fact that Lavatsa has really been creating and missing so many chances of late.

@ 13 nyakogalo – these are grown-ups and if they continue like this then they can only play in Kenya and no other place. Remember how many trials both have gone to attend but they have never been picked; probably it could be they attend these trials after drinking so they are weak. Kevo had really picked and now it’s like he’s making two steps backward to undo his achievements. As for forgiveness, there is no problem but I’ve very sure if we faced Uganda with this team that beat S.Sudan (Kevo & Were in the squad) then tungechapa Uganda like 2-1. Just think about it.

Look guys you dont know what players go through when they play for AFC and GOR leave a lone the pressure from most of you fans, having a little fun is not bad at all, when i played for Gor we used to do this all the time and we still won matches,so dont bash this young stars for having a little fun. Too much of playing soccer is not good. they needed a break. Kevo and Were, i got your back and dont apologize to un appreciative fans

Maybe Motema pembe’s post above explains why Kenya never wins anything. Indiscipline imezidi. With such attitudes no wonder harambee stars always looses to upuuzi teams like Eritrea. No wonder Kenya never wins the CECAFA cup.

No wonder Kenya players cant make it in Europe. Look at Kenya footballer of the year Kevin Kimani cant even get a contract with a div 3 team in belgium. Virtually all Kenyan players who go to Europe for trials fail. Akina Peter Opiyo, Jamal Mohamed, Allan Wanga ne wengineo. Blackberry flopped in Denmark halafu alifutwa job Azam juu ya laziness. Kenya players hawako serious.
    Pombe na hare tu.

Alcohol is detrimental to player performance. It affects your fitness and makes you injury prone. Ambitious players should treat their body like a temple. A guy as talented as Paul Were should be in Europe by now hata kama ni Norway ama Sweden. But he has failed to meet his potential. And look at Jamal Mohamed throw his talent away

The likes of Kevo Ade should have been a superstar. He was already famous when he wa sin form 4. But look at him now.

1.Unfortunately the regiön’s most respected beer company clearly advertises ‘baada ya kazi’ meaning beer after work. Have fan after work 2. The people who matter have hounded the fan lickers out of camp! And now kevo n were are on headlines for very wrong reasons. 3. Those expressing disappointment are doing so purely because we wish the best for these young lads. Alcohol and harlots cannot make anyone great, kevo. 4. Kevo, the writing is on the wall chose discipline and success or alcohol, cheap women and doom. Remember there’s money and class in football today not comparable with yester years. Those urging you on to have fun are deeply jealous of your big probable future, some of them achieved nothing playing football and would rather have you even worse. They will be happy to see you remind us on blogs how good you were! Don’t listen to them, instead take advise from success people and professionals.

  • After all said why don’t we accept the two guys’ apologies. Have seen Balotelli and even Rooney do worse things and are still forgiven. From the comments I have heard I don’t get any hint thst they commited some criminal act. Only @Nyakogalo is thinking of the way forward and that’s forgiving. I would prefer counselling than banning the players.Actually these are some of the bet players we have around. Do we only have coaches in HS and no mentors?
Let’s no behave like we are saints and behave like the two have commited some capital crime. Sneaking from the camp to me just shows that the HS management maybe did not engage the team properly and let them know that they would be given time out at some point in time

@Kassam Mwivangano I cannot add anymore after your wise counsel to K14. I hope he is listening. What has impressed me with him is his apparently sincere apology. K14 is a first ‘offender’ who has shown remorse. Everyone including FKF should pardon him and let the matter rest, however, if FKF is itching to punish someone then it should begin by seeking answers from Michel why he is not doing his job with our national team in Uganda(insurbodination).

Dont be fooled Kevo has always had a wild side, its just now that it has cought up with him,
if i had shilling for the number of times i have bumped into this Guy in the club in the company of some sleazy women i’d be rich…he has great potential and he is truly my favourite player in Gor but with him you get this feeling that he could there is more that could come from him but he is being held back by something probably his lifestyle

Indiscipline in Kenyan football is what has been a menace to the progress of this beautiful game in Kenya.

Kevo and Were are very talented players but made a big mistake of misbehaving badly. Ths is not the first time for these players to have discipline problems. I can remember that Were was once expelled from the national squad in a tournament held in Djibouti while Kevo has been having issues with his personal life which need to be checked and corrected for them to move forward.

Kevo dip in form sometimes back which was attributed to his poor personal life. Kevo you are a great player but indiscipline will not take you anywhere.

Were and Kevo, will your apologies stop you from misbehaving? What can young upcoming players learn from these two good and talented players? I think these two players should consider getting married.

We can forgive them today and forget but what about tomorrow?

You cannot mix football with either beer or women…something must be terribly wrong with these two players and they should be suspended by their clubs and be put on psychologist guidance.
